Hyles–Anderson College

In passing by Hyles–Anderson College (which appears to be within your specialty of unaccredited schools), I see several SPAs working over the article to remove what they term defamation, as well as adding things like "Hyles-Anderson College is home to some of the greatest Christian educators and Bible scholars today." A superficial review shows that they are removing sourced information of an unflattering nature, but I haven't had a chance to review the quality of the references to see if they support the allegations, and they may represent undue emphasis. Still, it looks like some sanitizing is taking place, as well as editing by related accounts. Could you take a look? I'll check some references as time permits. I'd say that the last section of this revision [1], while sourced to offline references that I can't verify, represents a fair degree of coatracking, but other references check out. Argh indeed, it veers wildly from one extreme to the other. I'm going to have a whack at the "abuse" section when I get the chance, as there's a separate article on the founder, and much else doesn't seem to directly concern the college. I removed the remainder of the "Abuse" section. While referenced, it's almost 20 years old and is undue weight. A section on a staff member convicted of abuse doesn't have bearing on the school, and the TV investigation amounts to little more than innuendo with respect to the school itself. Viewed though the lens of "what does this really have to do with the subject of the article?" I didn't see much of a rationale for inclusion, but do see a synthetic statement. We count the total hits for the day(s) when the article was on the main page, since the baseline number of daily hits is usually very small. The IP geolocates to the same city as the last two, and is from the same ISP. From the edits, it looks to me like it may be the same person as well, but after a check, I can't tie him to previous accounts, neither directly nor indirectly. It's thus  Possible from a technical perspective. You have more experience with him, what do you think?
As far as I can tell he hasn't created an account, so no new articles. Would it pay to try and talk to him again, to discuss the previous problems?

Revisions to TGOA/MGCA Page

I need help understanding revisions you made to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gardeners_of_America/Men%27s_Garden_Clubs_of_America. I am the primary editor for that page. Specifically, what does the header you added mean where it says "This article relies largely or entirely upon a single source." The article is a description of an organization, and the best source of information about an organization is the organization itself. As a member of that organization, I gathered information from other members to write the article. So why are other "sources" necessary? Where would I look for such sources? Why would any other "source" care about our organization?

Also, you removed a section that included the organization's mission statement. All organizations have mission statements. The article as you have edited it now describes some of the activities of the organization without saying why those activities are being done. The explanation is in the mission statement, which you removed. This seems strange to me.

The other header states "Please help improve it by rewriting promotional content from a neutral point of view and removing any inappropriate external links". You'll have to explain to me which external links are "inappropriate", and why they are inappropriate. All of the external links were added because previous editors complained that I had not documented the article, and I added those links to the organization website for that purpose. So why are they inappropriate?

EUCLID (University)

Hi Orlady. I realize paid editors aren't overly welcome here. Well, consider me a patient and persistent one. ;-)

On the Talk page you mentioned issues with Original Research with the sandbox, but I also offered a series of discussion points (see below) based on pre-existing citations. I was hoping you would take a moment to review my suggestions and discuss which may or may not be appropriate. I also tried Bbb23 a few days ago to see if he was interested in chiming in.

• A five year old citation was used to claim EUCLID is on the unaccredited list in Maine, even though they are not on the current list.
• It’s misleading to only say that EUCLID is “unaccredited” in Oregon, even though the very same citation also says they are “approved for use.”
• Citation 7 is much more complex than the article text indicates. For example, it says that degrees from foreign institutions may be accepted if the applicant can prove they've received a similar education.
• The "degree mill" comment was associated with a very authoritative source, but according to the citation it's from a contributed article by two authors pushing their books about degree mills.
• EUCLID's own 24-page letter was only used as a citation to reiterate Accredibase's point of view, rather than to balance the article with both sides of the dispute.

A big NPT update

Hey! Big update on what the developers have been working on, and what is coming up:

coding

• Fixes for the "moved pages do not show up in Special:NewPages" and "pages created from redirects do not show up in Special:NewPages" bugs have been completed and signed off on. Unfortunately we won't be able to integrate them into the existing version, but they will be worked into the Page Triage interface.
• Coding has been completed on three elements; the API for displaying metadata about the article in the "list view", the ability to keep the "patrol" button visible if you edit an article before patrolling it, and the automatic removal of deleted pages from the queue. All three are awaiting testing but otherwise complete.

All other elements are either undergoing research, or about to have development started. I appreciate this sounds like we've not got through much work, and truthfully we're a bit disappointed with it as well; we thought we'd be going at a faster pace :(. Unfortunately there seems to be some 24-72 hour bug sweeping the San Francisco office at the moment, and at one time or another we've had several devs out of it. It's kind of messed with workflow.

Stuff to look at

We've got a pair of new mockups to comment on that deal with the filtering mechanism; this is a slightly updated mockup of the list view, and this is what the filtering tab is going to look like. All thoughts, comments and suggestions welcome on the NPT talkpage :). I'd also like to thank the people who came to our last two office hours sessions; the logs will be shortly available here.

I've also just heard that the first functional prototype for enwiki will be deployed mid-April! Really, really stoked to see this happening :). We're finding out if we can stick something up a bit sooner on prototype.wiki or something.

I appreciate there may be questions or suggestions where I've said "I'll find out and get back to you" and then, uh. not ;p. I sincerely apologise for that: things have been a bit hectic at this end over the last few weeks. But if you've got anything I've missed, drop me a line and I'll deal with it! So the DYK nom page is not needlessly clogged with detail, I have posted the following issue here. I think the bar you have set for close paraphrasing is too high. To be clear we are on the same page, are you saying that this paragraph in the article mackerel:

Atlantic Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus maculatus) occupy the east coast of America from Narraganset Bay in Canada to Yucatan in Mexico.[10] Its population is considered to include two fish stocks, defined by geography. As summer approaches, one stock moves in large schools north from Florida up the coast to spawn in shallow waters off Canada. It then returns to winter in deeper waters off Florida. The other stock migrates in large schools along the coast from Mexico to spawn in shallow waters off Texas. It then returns to winter off in deeper waters the Mexican coast.[11] These stocks are managed separately, even though genetically they are identical.[12]

is a close paraphrase of:

For example, Spanish mackerel occur from Maine to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. For purposes of management in the U.S., Spanish mackerel are divided into two stocks. Fish from one stock migrate from Florida northward along the east coast of the United States and the others migrate from Florida into the Gulf of Mexico. The two stocks may represent one or several populations of the same species. However, current knowledge about harvesting patterns and migration patterns dictates that they be managed as two stocks.

If this is what you are referring to, then I wonder if you are perhaps confusing the structure of the stock and its behaviour with the structure of the text. I didn't use that source at all, and was unaware of it when I wrote that paragraph (I wouldn't have used it anyway). I wrote the text from the three cited sources. Perhaps dementia is setting in, but I was a bit shocked when you said that was close paraphrasing, and simply wouldn't know how to move that paragraph further away from that particular source without sacrificing the actual information involved. --Epipelagic (talk) 02:36, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

OK, I agree that these are different. When I read the source, my reaction was "haven't I seen this somewhere else?" and I noticed a strong similarity in structure. I suppose that was merely coincidental.

However, I have a new question for you. Where in Canada is the place you call "Narraganset Bay"? The Narragansett Bay that I am familiar with (and that is the redirect target of Narraganset Bay) is in Rhode Island, which is in the United States. Canada came from the FishBase source, Narraganset Bay from the FAO source, and the ignorance that Narraganset Bay was not in Canada came from me. It may be that FishBase is not incorrect, and some mackerel move as far north as Canada. But I've dropped the reference to FishBase, since the necessary information is in the FAO source and FishBase seems the dubious source in this case. The distribution map FishBase provide themselves does not show the mackerel going as far as the Canadian coast and the Narraganset Bay reference is backed by other reliable sources, such as ICCAT, Page 244. --Epipelagic (talk) 16:09, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Well, that explains things a bit, but the geography is still confused. The one source that mentions Narragansett Bay is internally inconsistent, since the distribution map and other text in that source indicate that the range extends east and north from Narragansett Bay. I changed the article to refer to waters off Cape Cod, which is where most sources place the northern end of the range. --Orlady (talk) 18:13, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

I don't fully understand your questions, but I'll try to answer them anyway. The article Nelson's Greenbrier Distillery is based primarily on the National Register nomination form, which was initially the only source of information I had on the history. Other sources exist. If you have additional published sources, the best place to discuss article changes is Talk:Nelson's Greenbrier Distillery.

I guess you assume it was steam distillation because that's the method that's currently used for distilling witch hazel? That might be true, but from one of the links you sent (WP:V), shouldn't a source be provided to verify the opinion that was added to the entry (since it isn't in the source that was cited)? That was the reason for my citation request.

Of course, New Haven Business Magazine is a rather questionable source for information that I don't think is backed by reputable sources. Even E.E. Hi: I was about to tell User:Catamount800 that I had changed the hook for this article in prep, but unless I'm misreading, you came up with the "U.S. citizenship" wording, where at the nominations page it was "undocumented"? I agree "undocumented" is less than clear, but it's not just a matter of citizenship; it's a matter of having a valid residency visa if they aren't citizens. New Pages update

Hey Orlady/Archive 16 :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! Regarding the images, unfortunately, there was no indication at Commons of where and when the photographs were first published. Addendum: Some of the portals I use for uploading actually specialize in scanning historical images, for example the government run http://audiovis.nac.gov.pl/ (as in DYK File:Tadeusz Lehr-Splawinski.jpg, DYK File:Nowy Targ 1940 - Dom Niemiecki (German Stationhouse).jpg and DYK File:Ferdynand Goetel (1936).jpg among others including the latest File:ORMO (Warsaw, 1946).jpg). The online scans provided by NAC similar to Bundesarchiv, constitute a digital library of pics never before published. At Commons, we are suppose to reveal where and when the photographs were first published as if there was anything more to say. That is a bit confusing perhaps. Thanks again. Believe me, the situation gave me pain. To be featured in DYK, an image must have a "free" license, which generally means the same thing as a license acceptable to Commons. Commons often needs information about the location and date of the first publication of an image because the copyright status in many jurisdictions is determined from that information. The selected license for the photos you uploaded at Commons requires that the photo have been published in Poland before 1994 without a copyright notice. The images that you uploaded at Commons were obviously created in 1940, but Commons had no indication of when they were first published, and I couldn't find that information on the websites that you credited when you uploaded the files. I believe that the photos qualify as free, but I could not prove it. The Commons page has a message saying "To uploader: Please provide where and when the image was first published", as that information is needed to verify that the license is valid.

The other issue is the image File:Kaas Niels.jpg. I researched that one, too, and I agree with you that the Commons documentation for that image is not perfect. The selected license for that image has a copyright term of "life of the author plus 70 years". The author (that is the painter of the portrait) is unknown, so we cannot know for sure when that person died. However, the creator needs to have died before 1942. The information at Commons indicated that the image was published in a Danish book in 1912. That by itself establishes a strong likelihood that the author died before 1942. More importantly, though, everything about the artwork in that portrait is consistent with the portrait having been created in the 16th century (during the life of the subject). Considering that evidence, I concluded that the image qualified, in spite of the lack of documentation on the painter. --Orlady (talk) 00:26, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Orlady, I really need to talk it over with you, because there's a potential for an on-going problem, as the resources available to us online expand. The requirement of some first publication (whatever that means), probably a brick and mortar book or something, is redundant in case of databases such as the Bundesarchiv and NAC. The images digitized by them are free. They are all GDFL compliant. However, none of them have a record of being used previously. In fact, I have met with Vancouver Public Library director of public archives not long ago (as part of Wikipedia loves libraries initiative), and I know that massive transfer of data directly to Commons from public archives can be made (including manually, by volunteers like you and I). The images are all good to go at DYK, because of the already expired copyright. There is no reason to expect problems when using this procedure. Thanks. Poeticbent talk 03:46, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

CMU Page

I am reaching out to try and discuss your opinions expressed in the talk section and the main article. Since the PWU California page redirects to the CMU page and people who look to Wikipedia as a reliable source of information may be searching for how they can obtain PWU official transcripts and documents for their employers or for other academic institutions, I am trying to have the article reflect this type of information. Readers of the article need to know that CMU is considered a separate institution by accreditation, that Education Services is the custodian of their education records and that the State of California recognizes ES as this custodian, so they know the documents they may be getting from ES are official. A footnote isn't enough as most readers never click on these items. Your edits removing some of this more important information do not serve the readers of the main article. I'm not sure why you have such a strong opinion against PWU, the California Bureau (past and present) and Education Service. If you would like to share this information I would be willing to listen and respond. I am not trying to defend PWU California as much as I am trying to present a two sided account of some the PWU California history. It was a California State Approved schools and although the State had faults, that status was worth something. Wikipedia encourages diverse opinions in an article. In fact, they feel the different opinions make articles stronger. You can strongly disagree with issues, but it doesn't mean that my different opinions should be hindered or edited out. That just leads to the kind of edit wars that got this article restricted in the first place. We can go to arbitration before we go that route. I am only trying to include incomplete information or parts of previously cited reports and materials that can clarify matters and shed a different, perhaps more balanced light on the Article. If there was an error in the GAO report, I'm not trying to sweep the whole report under the rug, I'm trying to fairly represent all the facts. There were degree mills, I just don't believe PWU California particularly after State Approval was one of them. (PWU Hawaii is a different matter.) I believe the materials I am adding should be included. If I state something badly or you want to rewrite a portion of a post to make it better or more unbiased, that is fine. A total reversion of posts with no real explanation only seems to show an attitude of "if I don't agree with something, it's not in the article." My purpose is that I do think that CMU is a good institution and is deserving of some legitimate distancing from the pre 2005 PWU regime. If graduates were graduates of PWU California, they should be included in the article. If they were graduates of another PWU program, or you can't tell which PWU school they attended, they should not be included. The footnote in the article regarding the records custodian for PWU is appropriate for an encyclopedia article. Further to my comments, I have to agree that the bare-URL reference citation pointing to http://www.bppe.ca.gov/transcripts/custodian_records.shtml is not real helpful. It's also not the way Wikipedia likes to see references cited. (That's why articles sometimes have Template:bare urls placed on them.) If you want to increase the information value of the article, I suggest that you look up the URL, find the details that belong in a reference citation, and add them to the article. Proposed DYK Signpost article

I'm wondering if you would like to be involved in this as a consultant. Please see My suggestion at Signpost and Viriditas response and suggestion. The gist of this is that I find the DYK process an ongoing education. A hands-on experience that can't be beat for learning the ropes of building an article. The learning continues with each article I get involved with over there. Viriditas suggests I author a Special Report for Signpost, involving a DYK admin and someone from Signpost. My intent in the shortened hook was that the "J. McCarthy started racing" would evoke Joe McCarthy, in hope of the hook landing in the "quirky last position". Shopping Center/centre

Hi

I just noticed your post on the talk page of Shopping Mall (here). Did you take your suggestions any further?

I ask because I am curious about the etymology of the word/phrase "mall/shopping mall". For example I cannot find anything that refers to "mall" prior to the 1960s as meaning anything other than a tree lined walk, with the exception of pall-mall which is taken supposedly from the game.

Most reliable info I can see gives the latest shopping "mall" definition as being from the 1960s. Indeed the article itself says "One of the earliest examples includes the Valley Fair Shopping Center in Appleton WI which opened in March 1955", which shows that the phrase used was still "shopping center" at that point. Category up for deletion

Hi Orlady, just visiting from exile. A category I created is now up for deletion. I made a small attempt to explain and defend it, but the trend seems to be that "poignant" though it is, we just can't have this kind of trash on Wikipedia. I do think the category should be kept, but am not fond of pitched battles and would rather walk away than put myself through what I did on DYK. I wasn't going to bother you with it, but decided today to let and Gerda you know about this, in case you want to weigh in.
