Distances

I found a system for the distance calculator for the nearby state parks that works for me. I just use the map and check off all the parks that are 30 miles away using the scale and then check the ones that are close to the edge using the distance calculator. It should work. I expanded Lehigh Gorge State Park just now and will begin working on the nearby state parks for the northeastern parks now. Have a great day! Dincher 16:20, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

• I completed the nearby state parks for Ravensburg, Upper Pine Bottom and Little Pine. Sand Bridge was just a hair over 30 mile from the Pines I left it on. If we round to the nearest mile it fits. I also submitted the suggested DYK. Thanks for that. Dincher 16:11, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

I expanded Joseph E. Ibberson Conservation Area and Keystone State Park and did the nearby state parks for both. There is another Keystone State Park in Oklahoma. Wiki lists it as Lake Keystone State Park, but the Oklahoma State Parks website lists it as Keystone State Park. This matter will need some attention if you want to look into it. • I just read your note about the clear circle for find the nearby state parks. I'll try that Thursday. I am at Penney's again tonight. No state maps nearby. I completed Kinzua Bridge State Park it was mostly done. I also just got the note about the groundhog and the cat. I am afraid that our cat, Nittany, yes her name is Nittany, would be groundhog food. Last winter we had mice in the house. They ate her catfood. She looked at them. Pencils, they don't stand a chance, but mice and I assume groundhogs would be okay. Point and Pymatuning

I expanded Point State Park as requested on the article. I got a clear sheet with the 60 mile circle for finding nearby state parks. It works great. This will really speed up the process. Thats all for now. Dincher 18:49, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Slow night at JCP. I expanded both Pymatuning State Parks and created Pymatuning Lake. If their are wikipedia lake project people they might want to know about the creation of Pymatuning Lake. I have some time to look into it, but if you know and have time by all means let them know. I am gonna leave it as is. I don't want to get started on lakes and I really don't want to get started on state parks outside of PA, lately I have been running into them, lots of similar names with PA state parks as I am sure you are aware. • Howzitgoin' I had another slow night here at Penney's. I "completed" Memorial Lake State Park, expanded Neshaminy State Park and started Keystone State Park (Oklahoma). And did some ABC nearby state parks work. I am helping myself keep track of nearby state parks complete by adding the county to the parks that are complete. If all the nearby state parks are labeled with their county they "should" be complete. This is a quick reference, but I am still adding the comment line. The threatened snow was a dud here. But they did get some closer to Raleigh. Disappointing. Things are so nice and quiet at school right now. It's "Fun Friday" and the kids are watching Sponge Bob. Infobox River geography

I've added a switch to the template, if you add a new field map_first and assign it any value then the map is printed first and image last, if it is left blank (or not defined at all), which is the default behavior, it prints the image first. You're right, most articles have the image first though I personally prefer the map first. – Caroig 22:52, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Checklist for PA State Parks

checking duplicate or similar names elsewhere,

• This needs to be done. Memorial Lake has lots and lots of similar names, Moraine has a few too,

adding the PA county map refs,

• Yes and add the state parks to the county page

adding townships,

• Yes and add the state parks to the township page

checking that all have the right banners on their talk pages (WikiProjects PA (Penna) and PA (Protected Areas)),

• Yes maybe we will learn more about ICUN's. Many of them need to be rated too.

look at spell checking and copyedits,

• I don't know how to run spell checker on wiki or Do you just copy and paste to a word/works file?

and running the Peer Review MOS fixer tool.

We could put it in one of my or your sandboxes and base it on the Frog table.

I think that pictures across the top and possibly the bottom would be the best. I really don't like all the bank space on the National Park List the is next to the pictures. The pictures should be diverse, but unique to the state parks, I mean it should be a picture of something thats actually in the park, like the pavilion at Ravensburg State Park or the falls at Ohiopyle State Park. The panorama from either Leonard Harrison State Park or Colton Point State Park. The picture of Point State Park is a good illustration of one of the state parks in a city. A picture of some wildlife with proof that its in the park would be really nice, but probably hard to get. For example a picture of white tailed deer in front of one of the entrance signs. Sounds like a good spot to put a salt lick. And lastly a picture of people doing some sort of recreational activity at one of the parks, with visual proof that it is at the park. What do you think? You would needs lots of time, bait and a really good camera with the right kind of lens to get the animal picture. It would be great, but I am sure very difficult. Neither one of us have the time. I don't know about Gifford. Might want to ask A mcmurray who started and seems to have written most of the article. We seem to be in agreement with the pics, thats good. So how are we going to go about picking the pics? I think the ones that we both think are just OK or worse should be scratched off first. I submitted Oil Creek State Park to DYK. It was a frustrating article for me. I hadn't even thought of it for DYK. Thanks. I sent an email to the Drake Well Museum people. I looked on TopoZone and found that their map shows Drake Well State Park! This is something that DCNR could answer. I think that Drake Well State Park got merged into Oil Creek State Park and that the well site is a historical site within the park. Dincher 04:03, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

I did send an email to the people at the oil well office, can't remember if I told you or not. As for mentioning former names, sure why not. Delaware Canal State Park is the former Theodore Roosevelt State Park, I found that when I expanded the Canal article. Last day with the monsters this week! Ok, so I found an online PDF of the DCNR's brochure for Gifford Pinchot State Park. It said 1961, that must be where I got it. It was the official brochure too, I have seen the same things for Kinzua Bridge State Park and a couple others. Anyway, I added the reference to the article as well as changed the infobox and included inline citations for both occurences of the date, hope that helps.A mcmurray 18:43, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Oil Creek

Dear Mr. Dincher, Drake Well Museum is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC). OCSP is administered by the Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR). Both properties are owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Drake Well itself and surrounding acre have been owned by the Commonwealth since 1931 though the Museum property has grown over the years. The current museum building was built in 1963 and the replica of Drake Well was built in 1945. If I can be of further assistance, just let me know.

Sbeates made some edits to Drake Well Museum and Titusville. I thanked her and asked her to look at Oil Creek State Park too. She is the historian of the Drake Well Museum. I like the pictures chosen, but I would really like a picture of work done by the CCC included since so many of the parks were built by the CCC. Worlds End and Little Pine pics are very similar. I'm not sure about the gauges. The 4'8½" notation (standard gauge) is certainly common in domestic railroad literature, but I'm not sure if the ' and " notation for feet and inches is suitable for "internationalized" publications. A quick check of the most relevant material to hand, NRHS Bulletin articles on Cuban railways and the Panama Railroad, shows that they use "ft." and "in." to describe gauges. I rather think that's preferable, just for reasons of clarity.

Apropos of USS Wateree, the reason I remember that incident so vividly is that there were two illustrations (artist's conceptions) of it in a National Geographic book on geology I had as a kid. The first showed the Wateree sitting on her bottom in the drained harbor, with the sailing ships all tumbled about her on their beam ends, and the smoking ruins of Arica lying beneath the grim bulk of El Morro. The second picture, at night, depicted the strike of the largest of the tsunami waves. It was painted as if at the bow of the boat, looking aft. In the foreground were bluejackets running forward in terror; in the middle distance stood the bridge and superstructure, with the officers, calm in silhouette against the interior light, looking forward; and behind the ship, a terrible boiling comber climbing to the zenith. You can read the account of then-Lt. Billings, of the Wateree, towards the end of this PDF; it's nothing short of a miracle that they lost but the one of the ship's crew, and none when the big wave broke upon them. Re: county navigation boxes

I'd considered both having something instead of the Ohio flag in the corner and having the cities separate. If possible, I'd like to have a county flag instead, but my image request for Logan County hasn't yet been fulfilled, and I've not a clue whether other counties even have flags. I'm sure your idea would work fine :-) As far as separating cities, I considered that, but all I've been doing are the mostly-rural counties that have almost no cities other than county seats. Between the eight counties that I've done in recent days, there are only twelve cities, and that only if Delphos is counted twice (since it's part of two counties). I suppose that it could be done (especially if this is the standard for such boxes), but I considered it unnecessary. The main reason I've been able to do all this so fast is that I borrowed the coding from the {{Ohio}} template (I haven't a clue how to make a table in the first place) and have simply copy/pasted the information onto different counties. So far, all I've done are counties with articles on all townships; I began at Logan, my home, but have proceeded northwestward because most counties near me don't have township articles. You have no valid reason, nor do you offer any valid reason for deleting them. Wikipedia rules do not allow for anyone to delete entries simply because they do not like the entry. These entries are valid and are as much a part of Newton Falls, Ohio as are any of the other entries listed. Rührfisch, I read on your page that someone had malicously (without cause or reason) vandalised your page. Please know that this was not the Newton Falls Leader. Though you and I have our diffences, I have the utmost respect for the work of others...unlike some. I do not condone this type of behavior from anyone, and it saddens me that this has happened.

I see by Athaenara's comments above and on his/her page that you have found an ally...kudos. However, I am not what you two accuse me of...rather simply, I have a free community website that is a valuable resource for Newton Falls, Ohio. Having clicked on a link and read the Newton Falls, Ohio page on Wikipedia, and having common sense enough to compare the links to other sites that were there, I felt there would be no reason why I should not post mine. Forgive me, I don't have the time to search through pages and pages of rules, I used common sense! That being, if links to pages similar to the Newton Falls Leader are allowed (their mere existance on the page indicated that they were allowed), then a link to the Newton Falls Leaderwould be allowed, too. Bam! As Emeril would say. Someone deletes the links. Honestly, being a newbie with Wikipedia, I did't realize the first edit I made actually became a part of Wikipedia, so I thought nothing of it when it was removed; I thought the edit was only a change made locally in a cookie. Then I registered, and added the links back, only to find that they were deleted. Why, I questioned myself. Why should other links be permitted and not the Newton Falls Leader? So I questioned the person that removed the links...while the rest is history, I must say that I have never met such egocentricity. Ok, I have, but I never thought a website such as Wikipedia would allow it to exist. Then I read Athaenara's page, and comments about me. It is becoming apparent to me that a lot of people involved with Wikipedia are ... well, I don't want to violate any rules so I will refrain from going ... you get the point. Now, we are at the point where I must stand up for myself as I believe Wikipedia is fair and will not tolerate what has happened.

Unfortunately, I do have other interests beyond posting a link on Wikipedia. Quite honestly, if Wikipedia wants its users to be schooled in their rules, then they shouldn't allow users to post until they have taken a crash course, passed a test, and have shown that they have read, understand, and are sworn to follow them.

I hope I did this correctly, I don't want to be scolded, as I have been already for not entering a time - or is it time stamp - oh, so much to learn - it really would be great if Wikipedia actually had folks that were helpful instead of destructive! You know, the types of people that see others doing something that didn't quite match the rules, and instead of attacking them, criticizing them, instead of taking on an attitude of superiority, they actually helped guide the user in understanding the rules.

Wikipedia Knuckleheads are a lot easier to ignore than real knuckleheads. Especially the little ones that I work with every day. Two of the head knuckleheads were absent today.

There are a lot of people on wiki that seem to be here for weird reasons. Recently Jacob Nolde had an "edit" that you repaired. Someone said on the talk page that it needed an info box. Why didn't they just add the info box? And Keystone State Park (Oklahoma) was listed as being uncategorized. Why not just add the categories? I just don't get it. Anyway time for more nearby state parks. I assumed that your vandal was the Newton Falls problem. It wouldn't make sense for anybody else to do it. Dincher 02:19, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

I didn't think that you were being bossy. It's good advice. Know that I call them "monsters" as a term of affection. I refer to them as monsters quite often. I think that I will work on the Lycoming County histories. (Although my Dad is not happy with a perceived bias against Germans and towards the British types). I have an old map of Limestone Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Dincher is spelled Dinger! (Again my Dad blames this on the English). Dincher is a weird name, but at least its not Dinger! There is so much humor on wikipedia! I love it. The pictures of the spaghetti made me laugh. My brother lived in Boston for awhile near the ducklings and in Hanau near the Brothers Grimm Statue. What are we going to do about the comments for some of the parks. They aren't all that interesting. In fact the same thing could be said about lots of them. Scooby Doo State Park was built during the Great Depression by the Civil Conservation Corps. Or. Mighty Mouse State Park was once a barren wasteland that is now the site of a thriving second growth forest. I have forgotten where I found the National Register of Historic type places template, but I knew where to add it. I will add some more now after I read about Mighty Mouse. The PHMC website is another blocked site here. Doesn't make sense and keeps me from getting "work" done. [www.recreation.gov] does work. This has lots of info on Federally connected lands in PA. Histories

I was just looking at the histories of White Deer Hole Creek and Larrys Creek lots of this info could be included in the histories of Lycoming County and West Branch Susquehanna River or West Branch Susquehanna River Valley. Have you thought of including the histories you have already written into the mentioned articles.? I created Daniel Boone Homestead today. Philosophy and Writing Style

I am getting ready to start expanding Jackson Township. I read this excerpt and knew it was yours. As the crow flies, Lycoming County is about 160 km (100 mi) northwest of Philadelphia and about 265 km (165 mi) east-northeast of Pittsburgh. The unincorporated village of Buttonwood is in the township. In Buttonwood there is a covered bridge over Blockhouse Creek, a tributary of Little Pine Creek. Perhaps I am becoming a bit too familiar with your work?=) Are you able to locate state parks on the map by just using the dots? I mean can you point at a dot and know which park it is without clicking on the link. If you can, this is a sign of spending too much time on wikipedia. =) Dincher 00:16, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Why does the expression always say, "as the crow flies"? Why not some other bird? Perhaps this is something I could research. It is a good point. I will find a way to give a better sense of location. When I first read of Curwenisville, I assumed it was the previous name for S. B. Elliott, Crooked Creek had crossed my mind. I found the answer about As the crow flies. When lost or unsure of their position in coastal waters, ships would release a caged crow. The crow would fly straight towards the nearest land thus giving the vessel some sort of a navigational fix. The tallest lookout platform on a ship came to be know as the crow's nest. Pretty cool. Nice work with the updated List of Pennsylvania state parks. I was looking at it and saw some problems, that I can't figure out the cause and hence can't correct. First, the {{convert}} template is not working for the last 6 current parks (Varden - Yellow Creek). Instead it's a link to convert, and I can't find any incorrect wikicode. Second, the {{Protected Areas of Pennsylvania}} template is not appearing, its showing as a link to Template:Protected Areas of Pennsylvania. Finally, I tried to use the {{reflist}} template, and the footnotes stopped working after number 91 or 92. Anyway, just wanted to get a fresh set of eyes on theses issues. For the references, is it necessary to have the footnotes? I assume your goal is to have links to both the Wikipedia site for each park and their official page at DCNR. What would you say to just including weblinks next to each park instead of the footnote link. See List of largest cable-stayed bridges for an example. I'm not sure having 121 references is necessary (or even desirable) for a featured article status. The List of US Presidents is a featured article and is not over-loaded with references. The Montour Family

I was going to start the history of Montoursville tonight, but ran into a problem. The link for Madame Montour is a redirect to Catherine Montour who must have been MM's granddaughter and daughter of French Margaret. I have placed a lengthy discussion about the Montours on the discussion page for Catherine. Will you look at it and let me know what you think? Dusty Old House

Well it looks like I have dived right into this one. Sometimes I just get going and before I know it I have a major production on my hands. Graeme Park that is. I am done for the night, but I am worried about DYK. I have more info to add, but don't want to miss out on DYK. Will I if I stop now and don't start back until tomorrow. Graeme Park is done. I am looking at the waters on List of Pennsylvania state parks. I blanked Hills Creek it was a redirect to Hills Creek State Park. I also dewikilinked a few and fixed a few others, the creek at Lackawanna State Park that I won't try to spellDincher 22:31, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I am not sure how to title the Rauchtown Run/Antes Creek article. They may be the same stream, but they clearly have two different identities. I am leaving it alone for now. The short list is the one that I think should be submitted and save the long one on frog. Rauchtown Run/Antes Creek also has DYK possibilities. Perhaps ...that Rauchtown Run sinks underground in Limestone Township only to emerge several miles away as Antes Creek? Dincher 02:31, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
