RFA2024 update: phase I concluded, phase II begins

Hi there! Phase I of the Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review has concluded, with several impactful changes gaining community consensus and proceeding to various stages of implementation. Some proposals will be implemented in full outright; others will be discussed at phase II before being implemented; and still others will proceed on a trial basis before being brought to phase II. The following proposals have gained consensus:

See the project page for a full list of proposals and their outcomes. A huge thank-you to everyone who has participated so far :) looking forward to seeing lots of hard work become a reality in phase II. theleekycauldron (talk), via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:09, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

BADNAC

You have made a bad close per WP:BADNAC #2, please revert your close and allow a proper admin closer to take place. Talk:Frederik IX#Requested move 15 January 2024  // Timothy :: talk  12:03, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

TimothyBlue, I do not consider this close as violating BADNAC #2. Per policy and arguments, it was very clearly in support of move, not no consensus. Every oppose argument was fairly rebutted, and there was no clear reasoning given why the RFC should be ignored here. This seems to be primarily about the larger scope consensus discussion (on NCROY itself), so I encourage taking it to a Village Pump or similar; or discuss this specific close at WP:Move review if necessary. Soni (talk) 14:21, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
Are you aware there is an Arbcom discussion about this subject? If this has made it all the way to Arbcom, tt clearly meets BADNAC #2. Again asking you to revert your close and move. You are welcome to become involved in the Arbcom discussion. I'm making a simple request, allow a proper close or at least wait until the outcome of the Arbcom discussion.  // Timothy :: talk  14:31, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
I did reference the Arbcom discussion in my first sentence of the close, so I should hope so. The Arbcom case is primarily behavioural, as is generally their standard. Unless Arbcom explicitly decides to involve themselves in consensus creation, the overall discussion would still stay under an admin noticeboard or a village pump, one of which has a discussion started already.
As for this specific RM, I have reread the entire discussion once already. The broader question causing strife does not inherently make all subdiscussions contentious. The evaluation on the RM was"Frederik IX" vs "Frederik IX of Denmark" and "How much does the existence of non king Frederick IXs change this", which can be safely evaluated regardless. I have a splitting headache so I'll sleep on it before reading further discussions. Do you have any concerns with the close other than my admin-ness? Soni (talk) 14:52, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
All I'm asking is for you to revert your close/move and allow a proper close.
From the amount of discussion surrounding this issue, closes in the area clearly meets BADNAC, regardless of the outcome. Closing this when you know there is an active Arbcom and move reviews already underway for this issue is a problem. How could you not see this as a BADNAC? These are obviously controversial, I have no idea why you would choose to further this problem.
A regular request for close can be made, it will avoid another drawn out move review being requested, and it will not be drawn into whatever is next after Arbcom reaches its decision. Insisting on retaining this close will only add to the problem, reverting it and then participating in the discussion will help with the solution.
I think this is a pretty simple request, it is obvious from Arbcom more is coming for these discussions, let this work out without another BADNAC to add to the bunch.  // Timothy :: talk  15:37, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
I have made a statement at the Arbcom case. I find this request to be quite odd, given your claims of Arbcom adjudicating on this (They do not deal with local or global consensus, ordinarily) nor your lack of explanations for why this close itself is incorrect. I have noted that I do not object to another admin redoing my close, but in the interest of WP:NOTBURO, I will not be reverting it myself.
If you have any further opinions on this, I recommend another venue. It does not seem like a "simple request", and I prefer to not be further pressured on this. Soni (talk) 20:33, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

I saw how you closed the Frederik IX requested move back in May, and I have to say I really admired your willingness to close such a heated discussion (when no one else did for months) and how you stood by your decision even after being pressured. closure

Hey, Soni! Thanks for closing the PMs RfC. No one has objected, but when you said That WP:RS disagree on whether the current PM is 14th or 15th is more evidence in favour of this removal I felt like it could be interpreted as a supervote. Valereee (talk) 11:35, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

@Valereee I think it is probably a phrasing thing than a supervote.
Multiple people had expressed the same sentiment, for example We are not clear on which source we should trust. Some mention Modi as the 15th PM and some as the 14th. Moreover, the sources are also confused by GrabUp. It is a solid argument in favour of remove, and imho a strong one too. As closing arguments are supposed to summarise the most pertinent points of the discussion when closing, I added that.
It wasn't intended to be "I think it should be removed because of X" but "People have said X, and that's more evidence for removal". Soni (talk) 14:16, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
Yes, that's basically what I figured -- a matter of phrasing, which if anyone objects you can just tweak. Best to you! Valereee (talk) 15:12, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for collapsing my sections that were starting to veer off-topic. I will do that to myself next time (or just not veer off-topic, when possible). Thank you for giving us a chance for a clean start at trying for consensus, by closing the first discussion as "no consensus". And thank you for encouraging me to ensure that all instructions are brief, clear, and neutral.

Thanks

  Project Editor Retention

This editor was willing to lend a helping hand!
Thanks for all you do to acknowledge others at the Editor of the Week Awards, You nominated our first Editor of the Week O so many years ago. The future was hard to predict back then...but here we are still building the encyclopedia that the world goes to for answers.

Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 12:36, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

@Buster7 Haha, I remember those ye olden days way too vividly. Almost feels a few weeks ago, not a third of my life. If I remember correctly, Isadora was also the one who designed all the cool EotW images that we then templated out. That was a fun time.
I don't know if I told you this, but over the course of the last decade, I have vaguely followed Wikipedia even in years I made no edits; and every time, I could see proudly see the continue strong. All the incoming recipient responses kept reinforcing how tangible an impact we were making, keeping editors from quitting or making them more excited about editing again. And you were always the one man army keeping it going through everything. So thank you, you gave me something to be very proud of, and something to look back and go "Oh this thing we did, it worked out well". Soni (talk) 12:59, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
You make me think of the movie Field of Dreams and "If you build it they will come". I remember how disappointing it was that DB walked away and left us adrift. I've felt it all these years and say it now only since it bubbles up from distant memory. But we kept it afloat, out to sea where no one could find us and editors stopped talking to us. But...here we are...560 Eddy's later. Well done! Good for Us! Good for the WP community. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 13:17, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
Yeah I guess my POV in this kind of thing was always "It's good and healthy for people to branch out and do different things". I know half the people I used to know well from that time are either retired or in the WMF now. But me walking away was the best way to let me feel excited again and come back to enWiki and more active editing. So I'm glad the torch is still burning, and I hope there's more people to carry it on when we branch out or stop. Soni (talk) 13:48, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
My disappointment in the editor retention wikiproject is broader: most discussion threads were indistinguishable from those on other pages complaining that editor X or editors interested in Y have been wronged, and there was little interest shown in working on improvement initiatives. Editor of the Week has persisted in part because we deliberately set it up with long-term sustainability in mind (the other part being, of course, Buster7's dedication). It has a specific objective to recognize beneficial tasks completed (even if it encompasses a broad range of editor activity), relatively low overhead, and is designed not as a prize to be fought over, but as a token of encouragement. Offhand, other than the Signpost, I can't think of any other initiative not directly related to writing articles that has lasted as long. That's an impressive track record and directly attributable to Buster7 being there, day in and day out. isaacl (talk) 14:25, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
Yeah I guess specificity went a long way to guarantee longevity (other than having someone who can commit to it for months). Teahouse is another one, but it's more a forum than a specific project. I wonder what other specific things could be started today if people were so excited.
@Buster7 and @Isaacl, thanks for the thoughts. Soni (talk) 03:02, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
True enough that the various help forums predate Editor of the Week (the Teahouse by a bit less than a year). The reference desk is one that is, by design, unrelated to editing at all. I think there are editors who are initially excited, but they have to follow through: for initiatives that need consensus support, work to generate agreement, and for things that can be done individually, put in the work. I understand, though, with so many other pastimes available, there's often a more interesting alternative that comes up. isaacl (talk) 03:27, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
You two are making me blush. Isaacl, you bring to mind how difficult it was to maintain the heartbeat of a thread/discussion with out it evaporating into non-sequiturs and verbal quarrels. Triage was constant. Keeping the talk on topic was impossible. We were like referees in a WFF Battle Royal. As combatants showed up, the wrestling ring kept getting larger and larger. I can't remember names but I know we had provocateurs that only came for the "blood sport" while we had to herd cats and share our thoughts at the same time. I was lucky that I saw a niche and I filled it. And here we are a decade later. Good for Us! Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 03:52, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
