Notice of request for deletion of editor Sonia
Sonia, the editor you are, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. DYK for Novacam Technologies
On 10 January 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Novacam Technologies, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that the fiber-based nature of Novacam Technologies' detector probes is unique in the optical metrology industry? If you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

DYK for Wilmer Tanner

The fact was ... that Wilmer Tanner (pictured with a tiger trophy), born 1909, described at least fifteen new species or genera? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Be my mentor for my Public Relations Seminar class!
Hi my name is Claudia. A senior in Simmons College. Communications Major with a minor in Managament and Film. I use wikipedia, but never ever added or contributed to it before this class. And to be honest I have no idea what I am doing with Wiki and its editing tool. Hopefully I am able t catch up. For our class each student has to research, write, and edit a Wikipedia entry on a public policy issue that is integral to a case study of crisis communications that I select or is given to me. I have 2 cases that I need to research; one on GM and one on WikiLeaks. Cdjsuarez (talk) 15:49, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Claudia! I'd love to be your mentor. I've dropped you a welcome message that hopefully helps you a bit with what you're doing on-wiki; you can always reach me on Gtalk or MSN if you'd like real-time help with editing (email me for details). Your class looks to be following the suggested timeline for the most part; I'll be following that along and checking on you as time passes, but do feel free to ask for help with anything at any point, and explore the place beyond the constraints of your assignment! sonia♫ 04:29, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
So I am interested in working on some LGBT rights or Human rights in the US, but my professor finds the topic too broad, and maybe not enough to work on or edit on. Do you have any suggestions? Also - I am researching some more this weekend - but feel free to give me feedback and advise. Cdjsuarez (talk) 18:35, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
Im looking for a mentor, would you possibly consider...
I'm new to Wikipedia as a student at Montana State University, taking NAS 426 Law and Policy and am looking for an online mentor, who will be available to offer advice and assistance as I start editing. Thanks Misstbird 153.90.170.89 (talk) 19:11, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Misstbird, I see that you've also asked KrakatoaKatie about this; I feel she would be a better mentor and will leave it up to her :) If she's too busy to take you on, I'm afraid I've already got the two mentees I've set as my tentative limit this semester, but I can certainly point you to others in our group of excellent mentors whom I've had personal contact with and trust. Don't feel restricted by your assignment's details-- experimenting with Wikipedia (especially before the due dates start looming) will help you do well and make this experience more fun as well! :) sonia♫ 04:29, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Mentor request
Hey Sonia,
I am a student at James Madison University in a copy editing class. We are working on a wikipedia project doing copy editing on public policy pages. I'd love for you to be my mentor if your up to it. Thanks for your time!
Ohheyheidi (talk) 21:14, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Ohheyheidi, good to see a student who's really getting into the swing of editing. From what I can see, you've done excellently so far, especially in leaving descriptive summaries of what you're doing in each edit. Unfortunately, I'm a bit busy this semester and feel you'd be better off with a mentor who has more time to devote to the project- I'd be more than happy to point you in the direction of one who I think would do a great job, if you'd like that. Do take the time to mess around with Wikipedia outside your course's scope, though- I came to love it and I hope you do too! We're always in need of more editors like you. :) Let me know what you decide. sonia♫ 04:29, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Coordinating a course
Hey Sonia, would you be interested in coordinating Wikipedia:WikiProject United States Public Policy/Courses/Spring 2011/Public Relations Seminar (Marlene Fine)? It would just require occasionally checking that nothing falls through the woodworks working with the students, and making sure the ambassadors are responding to queries and reviewing content. Also, if there are issues or the class needs attention, you could be the central contact for e-mailing the Google group, etc. If not, no worries, someone else can do it to! Sadads (talk) 01:49, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm. I told myself that I'd be very careful about committing to things this term, because I'm undertaking part-time study (math, for any curious talk page stalkers) on top of carrying on with nearly everything I had been involved with in 2010; toward the end of last year life had become a bit much and I don't want that to happen again. However, seeing as I'm already mentoring two students from what appears to be a fairly small and well-organized class with experienced campus ambassadors, I'll give it further thought. (For what it's worth, halfway through last semester I volunteered to coordinate a course, but there was much lesser activity than anticipated and keeping track of all the students- who for the most part did not have mentors- was a nightmare.)
- Also, you've showed up quite a lot on my watchlist of late inviting editors into the programme or otherwise doing work for it- I'd like to thank you for the effort you've gone to in not only keeping up with all this, but taking the initiative to go far beyond. sonia♫ 04:29, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- I am glad to see you appreciate my efforts. I really do feel this program is invaluable to the community and has unfettered potential if we figure out ways to make it effective. Again, I don't want to put too much pressure on you, but I think everyone would appreciate your support :) Sadads (talk) 04:42, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Mentor Request
Hi Sonia, I am a junior at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. I am majoring in Media Arts and Design and Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communications. This semester, I am in a Professional and Technical Editing class that is working on the U.S. Public Policy Project. I have yet to pick the exact topic that I will be working on. I was hoping that once I do, you will be able to help me and answer any questions that I may have. Will you be my mentor?
DsgnWrte (talk) 20:46, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hi DsgnWrte, I'm sorry about the extremely belated response- I see Dana's happy to be your mentor though, and I'd recommend her over myself any day. Glad to see you getting stuck into editing already- take the time to explore the place a bit, and have fun! I hope that you'll stay on after your assignment finishes :) sonia♫ 08:02, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

mentorship
Hello there, I selected you as my mentor when we started this project. On our class page, it doesn't show you next to my screen name. Are we good to go here or should I find another mentor? thanks so much! Penandpad — Preceding unsigned comment added by Penandpad (talk • contribs) 21:41, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Penandpad, I don't believe I was aware of your choice. If you take a look at your contribs, you'll see the list of edits you've made so far-- only one to my talk page (and thus to communicate with me), and that was the one you've made just now. I'm unfortunately full up on mentees and don't want to take you on only to find I can't meet your needs; however, I'd be more than happy to recommend you to another mentor who'll do a great job. Good to see you testing things out- being bold and having fun are important things! I'm sorry for the inconvenience, do let me know if you'd like me to suggest another mentor. Happy editing, sonia♫ 00:08, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

My subpage Article
I've noticed you've fixed my spelling mistake. Thanks for picking that up. My only concern for that one footnote, I was going to make it longer and explain that "England offered refuge" (Whittle, (2010) p. 9.) but I thought that this footnote was only for his birth place and year, while adding his parents were German. I'll think about where I could put his parents background and "England offeredd refuge" somewhere in the article, while I'm in no hurry to post it to the main article on wikipedia. As long as no one else makes any edits before I do! Thanks for your help in #wikipedia-en-help. I'll add your page to my watchlist. Adamdaley (talk) 06:25, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
Could you read the lead paragraph to see if it makes sense and make any changes that you think would work. Trying to get his multiple names to the "note" section and even the meaning of his name to the "note" section. Adamdaley (talk) 13:08, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
- will do. sonia♫ 22:52, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
I can see what you've done. I did find a little mistake you made missing a fullstop, then the footnote should be after the fullstop, I can easily fix that myself. This is the second article that I've helped with but the first article a major addition. Sadly, this article, does have a few other people who were involved with this person directly or indirectly, but at the moment I'm concentrating on this one. I'll do a little more of it tonight or tomorrow. Once again, your help is appreciated. How much do you charge for each edit? Adamdaley (talk) 09:14, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
- Merged all your sections on this talk page into one for easy reference, Adam, hope you don't mind. I'm more than happy to keep working w/ you on the article, and on any more you're creating-- you've done very well. Charge? I'll think about it and get back to you ;) sonia♫ 01:37, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
- I was thinking of doing the "merging" of the three sections into one. But I wasn't sure if you would like it or not. The only article I'm working on is the one on my subpage. There is starting to be a problem with the opening paragraph and then his early life with information I have. It's conflicting and I know the opening paragraph is only an basic summary of who this guy was and what he was notable for. The main conflict is how to word it and where to put it then reference/source/footnote it. For example, in his information box there is a name used as "Emil R. Goldfus", one book has it like that, then another one has "Emil Robert Goldfus". A second example would be another name he used "Andrew Kayotis" which is the English translation from the Lithuanian name but later in the same book it has "Andrew Yurgesovich Kayotis". So I am a little confused on what to do about those two examples. Which are already referenced or footnoted without the middle name. Once again I appreciate all the help you've done for me. Also, I have your discussion/talkpage on my watchlist. Adamdaley (talk) 05:52, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
- Thinking about it. sonia♫ 22:12, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
Japan Earthquake
You are probably 'all quaked out', but there has been a major quake (8.9!), and a tsunami in Japan! See 2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami. Oz TV News said 5th biggest ever recorded! - 220.101 talk\Contribs 07:33, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
- I got nineteen edit conflicts trying to copyedit that article last night! Poor Japan; aftershocks every ten minutes- each comparable in intensity to the Chch quake! sonia♫ 22:52, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
- I got 3! But that was only about 3½ hours after the event trying to edit the lead. Indeed, in hindsight, Christchurch may have gotten off lightly. (No tsunami!) Now there are considerable back and forth reports about the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant and a related, (premature I hope!) article Fukushima I disaster.
• The SAR teams now all have recent experience, and some may be able to go straight to Japan (the Japanese SAR team have gone early) as they are already 'in the area.' So some 'good' is coming from your quake, perhaps. :-{ - 220.101 talk\Contribs 14:36, 12 March 2011 (UTC)- Yes :-/ I've recently been involved in helping settle a few exchange students who were studying in Chch into schools here, and it's been a difficult enough road for them already without having to worry about family back home... Made a few minor tweaks to the power plant article, might go through and citeweb all the refs if I have time. sonia♫ 01:37, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
- Japanese are they? The "power plant article" is becoming the real story, hope it ends well. Fukushima I disaster as mentioned above, was deleted, but is now a re-direct to the Power Plant thought there is a discussion that seems to be leading to a split again. The video of the explosion of the reactor building was reather worrying. (Godzilla fans had some 'fun' saying it was his/her fault. Rubbish, I know it's Mothra! ;-) )
• The tsunami though reached as far as Oregon(where I have an Uncle, living 'inland') and caused US$30-50 Million(est.) damage in Brookings, Oregon (Updated by moi of course!) - 220.101 talk\Contribs 07:56, 13 March 2011 (UTC)- Mm, Japanese. Seems they've all been able to contact family back home, which is good. I think a split might be a good idea, but perhaps it's a bit early to tell... sonia♫ 22:12, 13 March 2011 (UTC)
- Twas split, now merged again (when I started typing anyway!), but apparently against concensus. Re-merge 'discussion' was proposer, one other registered, and one IP editor over about 80 minutes. Took 43 min. for someone to say 'nay' though! The 6 opposers + 'request for independent opinion'. Don't know if this duscussion link will work, if it gets 'de-merged'. UzT! - 220.101 talk\Contribs 14:41, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

Marking articles students are working on
Howdy, Online Ambassador!
This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:
- Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
- If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
- Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.
And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

New Pages and New Users
I've recently been doing some thinking (and a great deal of consultation with Philippe and James at the WMF's community department) on how to keep new users around and participating, particularly in light of Sue's March update. One of the things we'd like to test is whether the reception they get when they make their first article is key. In a lot of cases, people don't stay around; their article is deleted and that's that. By the time any contact is made, in other words, it's often too late.
What we're thinking of doing is running a project to gather data on if this occurs, how often it occurs, and so on, and in the mean time try to save as many pages (and new contributors) as possible. Basically, involved users would go through the deletion logs and through Special:NewPages looking for new articles which are at risk of being deleted, but could have something made of them - in other words, non-notable pages that are potentially notable, or spammy pages that could be rewritten in more neutral language. This would be entirely based on the judgment of the user reviewing pages - no finnicky CSD standards. These pages would be incubated instead of deleted, and the creator contacted and shepherded through how to turn the article into something useful. If they respond and it goes well, we have a decent article and maybe a new long-term editor. If they don't respond, the draft can be deleted after a certain period of time.
I know this isn't necessarily your standard fare, but with your other work I thought it might be up your alley. If you're interested, read Wikipedia:Wiki Guides/New pages, sign up and get involved; questions can be dropped on the talkpage or directed at me. Thanks, Ironholds (talk) 21:01, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Child admins
Hi Sonia. Your oppose !vote based on comments taken fully out of context very nearly torpedoed my RfA with the pile-on opposition it caused (most of which were later moved to support, but not yours). Fortunately I passed with an overwhwlming majority.Perhaps this is an RfA, which BTW I have clearly supported - where your strong opinion in favour of child sysops - might not save the day, but may cause the numerous editors who are strongly opposed to the notion of teenage Wikipedians to reflect upon their stance. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:53, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Kudpung.
- I'm sorry that you took my comment at your RfA as negatively as you appear to have taken it. I do not feel these comments were taken out of context (although they were admittedly out of date), and meant my oppose exactly how it was worded—as a gentle reminder. That it prompted "per Sonia"s is not something I had expected at all. I held the view that you would make a good sysop, but that there was more chance of my concern being noted (by you and by other regulars, for future reference) from the oppose column; as such, I made sure this was clear so that the closing 'crat wouldn't take my vote as a strong one.
- I'm not going to weigh in re Dylan. I know I've a bit of a reputation for being in favour of younger editors, but that does not mean I would support a candidate simply for that reason. (For the record: I'm keenly aware, working in close contact with the preteen-teenage age group as I am, that adminship would cause significant stress or worse for many minors and evaluate RfAs of clearly young editors with greater care on that basis.)
- Given I've had my attention drawn to the fact he's a teenage editor, and that it's now very clear I'm outspoken about my belief that the "anyone can edit" clause should by nature include minors, I can't exactly support now without the support being questioned as having been canvassed.
- If there were a general discussion about minors as admins, as there have been in the past, I'd certainly weigh in. Thanks for thinking of me, in any case. sonia♫ 09:55, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for you reply. Please rest assured that I did not take your comment negatively - I did not even beat my grandchildren due to my injured trust and respect for fellow Wikipedians. I simply realised that it was ill researched and a very wrong assessment of the work I do not only with minors here on Wikipedia, but as a highly qualified professional in real life. I actually have an exceptionally forgiving nature - especially where young people are concerned;) Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 14:22, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

MOTD's State of Emergency + 1st of May's Motto
As you probably already know, we are facing some problems at MOTD. I am personally monitoring all the nominations on a daily basis and I'm finding very difficult to aprove the motto for the next day. The number of nominations has grown significantly, but even then it seems not enough. Please, if you have time, take a look at the nominations. And, if you like some of them but you think they are not good enough for being approved because of the set of links or and etcetera, please, try to improve them where it is possible. At this rate, I fear that we will see the end of the project. Thanks in advance.
I have also added a special nomination for this Sunday, 1st of May (International Workers' Day or May Day). Please, take a look at it if you can.

Semi-Protection
What is it? and how does one edit a page that is semi protected? Hipeople1231 (talk) 06:26, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hello again :)
- Semi-protection is when a page has been locked so that it can't be edited by any users who don't have accounts (IP addresses) or who are not yet autoconfirmed. It's usually applied when there has been ongoing vandalism to a page from many non-autoconfirmed or anonymous editors, and occasionally for other reasons.
- The reason why you cannot edit these pages yet is that you are not autoconfirmed; your account needs to have been registered for four days and made ten edits to be autoconfirmed. You have enough edits, but have not yet been registered for quite long enough. Stick around a couple more days and you'll be able to edit these pages fine :) sonia♫ 06:50, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Do you have sources for "bib"? I respectfully ask because when I go to the catalogs of the manufacturers of "bib" and "competition number", they emphasize the difference between the bib which is has a hole for the neck and the number which is a square with four tiny holes for safety pins. Bibs are used for skiing, rodeo, and a few other sports. Disposable bibs are also given to customers at seafood restaurant to protect clothes. Okay, I'm here again to bother you (again and again... sorry). Things seem to go much better at MOTD, right now. THANK YOU!!!
The reason why I'm writing you is the following: next Sunday (8th of May) is Mother's Day. I know that it is celebrated on different days around the world, but I'd love if we could (and are able to) make our "very-little" contribution in honour of all the mothers in the world. For the upcoming 8th of May (Sunday) there is already a motto in schedule, but I think that we can move the motto approved for that day to another date and to put one about mothers in place of it. Here is my nomination.

MOTD Barnstar for helping to keep our project "alive"
The MOTD Barnstar | ||
I award the MOTD Barnstar to Sonia for helping to keep our project "alive" during this difficult time. Without you and your so precious help and contributions, we all probably would have seen the end of this project. A BIG THANK YOU!!! –pjoef (talk • contribs) 19:47, 3 May 2011 (UTC) |
A brief note, please, read it carefully, especially the last part in bold: The last time we (our project) gave awards to our (its) members on last Summer, then the number of new nominations and reviews of the existing nominations has been diminishing. The end result was the "April crisis" with no mottos for about an entire week. On the contrary, I hope this award will help to maintain our level high or, at least, appropriate to its needs, the needs of our project. I think that around 10 minutes a week to "devote" to the project, when it is possible of course, should be more than enough to achieve the desired result.
Of course, I gave you this award personally, in a personal way and not in the name of the project. This is just a way to say a BIG thank you, so, refrain from returning the award to me or I would be overwhelmed by stars and banners and it is not my intention to "profit" on this, really! Please, do NOT return the award! And, there is no need to thank me, it was my pleasure.
Thanks again (I think I can speak for all the contributors to MOTD) and all the very best!!! –pjoef (talk • contribs) 19:47, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Rape navbox
Hey, I saw your RfC for the creation of a rape navbox. I think it's a good idea; however, I have a couple of suggestions. Namely:
- I'm not sure "raptio" belongs; it's rendered as "rape" in English, but aside from that linguistic oddity, there's nothing about it that makes it more suitable for the navbox than the general Forced marriage or Bride kidnapping articles. Which certainly can lead to rape, particularly as many of the cultures or jurisdictions in question don't/didn't recognize the right of a wife to refuse consent, but there are more than enough articles to populate a navbox while keeping the focus narrow.
- I feel as though "Sociological theories" and "Background/related" could be merged/grouped better. How's this:
- There are probably other articles I'm not aware of that could also be added.
- Sociobiological theories of rape also appears to be functioning as a header for the other things in that row, but that doesn't reflect its actual relationship to those articles, so it probably shouldn't be used that way.
Hope this is helpful, Roscelese (talk ⋅ contribs) 08:05, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hi! You're right; raptio doesn't really belong. I've removed it, and moved sociobiological theories out while doing a bit of tweaking. I'd rather there not be more than four rows, though, as this seems to me to be a bit lengthy for a navbox otherwise. But please do feel free to edit the navbox! You probably know better than I do what you're doing, and I certainly have no objection to it being edited while in my userspace. Apologies for the late reply. sonia♫ 06:21, 27 May 2011 (UTC)
AFC unref'd
So, I've been posting the 'please add refs' thing on the talk of users making new AFC's with no refs at all, and logging them in User:Chzz/afc unreferenced log. I'm doing this (semi) manually, for now; and think it's important to check them over, and see if it definitely 'works', sort of thing. And deal with any concerns.
It'd help a lot if you have any time to look at User:Chzz/afc unreferenced log and could check some, and add notes about what, if anything, happens (inline, indented) such as if it was declined/not notable, or if the user added refs, or whatever. You'll see I've added such comments on a few, but it takes time; hence asking you & OlEnglish for a bit of help, checking some.

Idea
Create a mini-project to bring the articles of Neda, Mohamed Bouazizi, Khaled Said, and Hamza Ali Al-Khateeb up to GA/FA status. Possibly expand to include others whose deaths became symbols of war and peace (i.e. Pat Tillman). Would you like to work on something like this? Ocaasi t | c 21:18, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Sir Robert Te Kotahitanga-a-Koroki Mahuta (KNZM)
Though the page is (currently) actually called Robert Mahuta. (I can see the need for a few re-directs there!) This new page may be of interest to you. I have updated it a bit and added some in-line cites. - 220.101 talk\Contribs 03:22, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
• Re above, maybe you can have a chat with NZ Author (talk · contribs)? They have had at least 3 of 4 articles they created in about 14 months deleted, though they don't edit all that much. The idea of notability and properly citing sources seems to be eluding them. I've dropped a few templates about sourcing and edit summaries, but haven't 'talked' directly with them. Watcha think? - 220.101 talk\Contribs 10:40, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm. It'd be a good idea to do so, but I'm not sure how much help I'd be given I can't see deleted revs! Will see what I can do when health permits. sonia♫ 00:25, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Renames
My rename from GreenPine to Pine is underway, but I'm having a lot of headaches. :( I recommend discouraging people from changing their names. It's waaaaaaaay too much work. I'm thinking of giving up on Pine/GreenPine and starting with a fresh account. GreenPine (talk) 08:33, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
- Was unable to reply to this, but GreenPine and I have talked since. sonia♫ 00:25, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Hey, this is what I put together for Steven Zhang. He's got 9 more to do, but they're missing your sophie and graphical charm. Let me know if you need anything, graphical that is. Ocaasi t | c 23:42, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

DYK for HOP card
On 17 June 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article HOP card, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the release of Auckland, New Zealand's new HOP card transit system was timed to be in place for the 2011 Rugby World Cup? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
