Help needed

There is persistent ongoing disruptive editing at India and weapons of mass destruction. The IP editor does not respect the consensus achieved on the talk page, does not discuss the issue, either on the article talk page or user talk page, and persistently adds original research/synthesis to the article. Can you assist protect the page? Regards, Anir1uph | talk | contrib 03:12, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

page got recreated with new title to avoid salting

Hey dude, if you remember deleting the page for the god awful group Blood on the Dance Floor (which is documented here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Blood_on_the_Dance_Floor_(group)) it got recreated here with the title Blood on the Dance Floor (band) with the new dab "band" to avoid the salting of it. The page should be re-deleted and that title should be salted as well since this is merely trying to get around its deletion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.225.129.6 (talk) 07:02, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Actually, notability was established for the band, and the page was taken to deletion review and unsalted.   - The Bushranger One ping only 08:59, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

I had thought that notability had been established. The publishing firm is notable. In its day (1970s), it was one of three of the biggest sheet music publishers of pop music on the planet. Would it be possible for you — or whomever removed the article — to email me the latest version so that I can critique it and determine whether it's fixable? To that end, I may attempt to edit it in a way that might satisfy naysayers. Eurodog (talk) 04:11, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Advice

Irredentism is related to Pan-Iranism article, not Greater Iran as cultural region. It has been discussed before six years about it [1], but some still makes the same mistakes. Cheers. --109.60.7.172 (talk) 02:07, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Then it needs to be discussed on the article talk page to get WP:CONSENSUS to where it needs to be removed from or added to instead of back-and-forth edit-warring. - The Bushranger One ping only 02:08, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
No problem, I'll leave that to users and admins since I'm just IP. Thanks for your action, seems like all other admins are at vacations. --109.60.7.172 (talk) 02:10, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
You're more than welcome to chime in on the discussion, IP or not - IP editors' contributions are just as valued as registered users (despite the hoards of vandals poisoning the well, alas). The semiprotection of the articles doesn't affect the talk page, so feel free to help out as you can.   - The Bushranger One ping only 02:12, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Well, perhaps with some other IP since this one gained bad reputation, like violating some 20 x 3RR.   There has been edit war on this article also: Islam in Iraq. He started again... ‎When it comes about such two IP's conflict banning is fine solution: it's better to have one innocent blocked then one active lunatic. --109.60.7.172 (talk) 02:23, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Protected that one too. Just remember that it takes two to edit-war; I'm not handing out blocks myself here because (as I mentioned at AN/I) the semiprotection both solves the "preventative, not punitive" criterion for blocks, and because dynamic IPs make semiprotection a better option in many cases. - The Bushranger One ping only

The "Iran-Iraq relations" and "Greater Iran" threads

Hello Bushranger

I would like to inform you that the edits I made are in accordance with common sources, the reality and even sources used on Wikipedia concerning the same themes on other threads. I am willing to prove that to you if you wish so people will get the correct information they deserve and not false and forged information that is written without any sources at all. How can that be accepted on Wikipedia? Especially when those claims that are used are wrong?

The problem with the current situation in that thread is that it's "status quo" imposed by you is the false version without any sources/references that was created by 1-2 well-known Iranian nationalists on Wikipedia. The same material has been copied from the "Iran-Iraq relations" thread to the "Greater Iran" thread and vice versa by the same editors. You can yourself witness the similarties of the UNSOURCED claims.

As said before sources should be used to support so many supposed claims - that in reality are wrong.

I hope that you will take a look at it so we can have a discussion about this subject.--83.95.250.247 (talk) 02:14, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

You need to go to the article talk page(s), presenting your reliable sources there to discuss the matter civilly to gain consensus for any changes to the article that you believe need to be made. Unfortunatly the area of discussion is out of my area of knowledge and my time is limited; my actions on the articles were in the role of a "fireman" putting out the fire (i.e. the edit-war). So you should take a deep breath, drink a cup of tea (or whatever beverage you enjoy the most), and write up a post for the article talk page or pages that explains your position so that other editors can help build consensus for improving and correcting the article. - The Bushranger One ping only 02:16, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

I like your advice and I agree completely with your approach. I will do as told. After that I can only hope for consensus to be reached. My problem with some parts of the text in those two threads (in reality they are a little minority of those two treads) concerns the unsourced claims, lack of will to post any references when asked so and obviously the fact that the claims are wrong and not backed up by any sources. It's even so absurd that there is information on those two mentioned pages that go against the SOURCED information written on pages concerning the demographics of Iraq and Iran on Wikipedia itself and other threads as well. It obviously irritates me because those few edits were made by 1-2 well-known Iranian nationalists and they were completely unwillng to even discuss this matter which I am. When some of them are able to post a reliable source then I will have no problem with their contributions. But the reality is that this is yet to happen and unless it does so I will obviously oppose such edits which I also did. In hindsigt my approach was not the best - I admit that but that can happen during heated discussions. At least I did not use threats as the user Iranshahr did or invented lies about my person as seen by the discussion page concerning him and me on the administrator discussion page. I would appreciate if my two posts on your wall would reach the administrators or people of importance on Wikipedia - because my current post speak much better for my case than those I posted in the heat of the moment (and very quickly) on the administrator board. Thank you very much.--83.95.250.247 (talk) 02:51, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Ay-yee! Doesn't he ever give up?? - BilCat (talk) 00:23, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
Answer to Bill: short of a block, apparently not, or at least not yet. I assume after the current DR will move to ANI and Arbitration.- Ahunt (talk) 10:21, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
Stubborn is he - even when some of my proposals haven't found the consensus I anticipated, I don't believe I have ever pondered proceeding to administrative action; it's just easily to accept that 'perhaps I wasn't right/the contrary stance is popular and thus should be left as is', dropping the stick, and just move onto one of a dozen or so articles that could be being worked on without disagreement instead. The sad thing is, I could have actually found myself agreeing and helping out with more minor variant merges, if he hadn't chosen to impale himself on this point. It would be nice to see him turn himself around. Kyteto (talk) 11:43, 22 July 2012 (UTC)
Yeah really - it's kinda like Ryan, if he put half the effort into improving his spelling and grammar (and availing himself of the WP:STANDARDOFFER) that he puts into socking he'd be a star contributor in no time... - The Bushranger One ping only 00:07, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
Based on his latest tactic, since obviously gaining no support at Dispute resolution, of edit warring to add his POV text not supported by the refs he supplies and now a personal attack, despite many talk page warnings, I would request that you review whether a block is not now warranted. - Ahunt (talk) 10:33, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Yes, the 3RR rule has been broken by TTT, he doesn't seem to understand that shoving his own POV in and attributing it to sources that don't say anything of the kind is NOT accepted by the majority of editors, he just keeps reverting it to what he wants to see. Some of the content he is pushing it blatent guesswork/OR, such as "The S-76's tranmission probably has less torque" - either this should be stated for certain with a source, or not at all; personal theory/guesswork is not acceptable, yet it keeps on being pushed. There's no sign of any development in stance or understanding, he just demands everybody to stand out of his way, or "break the empasse" as he sees it. Kyteto (talk) 12:23, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
He is just edit warring and vandalizing away there despite multiple warnings. I don't see there is any choice but a block now, given this history. - Ahunt (talk) 12:00, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
That's 8 reverts, for now - he doesn't seem to care that five seperate editors have conducted a contrary reading of the presented sources and found his additions to be not supported by the evidence; he just keeps on thrusting his lone opinion. Kyteto (talk) 12:23, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
He is still edit warring and I have warned him again, as I count he has made ten reverts and isn't listening to anyone. Looks like BR is here now, so I am interested to have him review the situation. - Ahunt (talk) 16:30, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Supreme facepalm of destiny. Not wanting to get WP:INVOLVED waved in my face, it's off to WP:ANEW for this chap, I reckon. - The Bushranger One ping only 16:31, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
And here's Johnny. - The Bushranger One ping only 16:49, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. - Ahunt (talk) 16:54, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
No prob. If only folks like TTT and Ryan would turn their powers to good... - The Bushranger One ping only 16:56, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
I don't quite understand why someome like Ryan would spend so much time writing articles that he knows will just be deleted. The research alone is a time-consuming process. There are far more efficient ways to disrupt WP than writing articles! - BilCat (talk) 21:47, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Well he got himself a 31 hour block, but I expect Act II will come in...31 hours, since his unblock request shows that he has no clue why he was blocked and shows that he has no intention of changing his behaviour. - Ahunt (talk) 19:29, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

And no comprehension of how WP:3RR works too. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:20, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
I notice from TTT's last edits on the S-76 talk page before they got themself blocked that they still seem to think that the S-76 is a version of the S-70. I know we are meant to assume good faith, but attitudes like that really make it difficult to actually improve the article. I just hope that TTT does not decide to remove my expansion of the technical description because they think that it should be at his new S-70 article.Nigel Ish (talk) 22:00, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Not much comprehension of how helicopters work either, it would seem. :) - BilCat (talk) 21:47, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I'm the one that thinks that a helicopter transmission can have a 77:1 reduction in a single stage.TeeTylerToe (talk) 01:59, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Which of itself proves nothing, yet alone if it's correct. - BilCat (talk) 03:00, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Facepalm That didn't take long at all! Seems to be the same wording that's been rejected before. - BilCat (talk) 01:50, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

I stumbled on this, and you so perfectly meet my expectations.

Now here's an idea. Why don't you, instead of wasting all your time bullying people, threatening them, and using the 3rr, and the hapless admins as your cudgel, why don't you put a tiny fraction of all that effort you're wasting creating conflict, and put it into a simple, easy debate on the talk page. "Does 'the s-76 employed technologies developed for the uh-60 including the transmission' mean that the s-76 transmission is a simpler version of the uh-60 transmission?".TeeTylerToe (talk) 01:59, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

The former does not preclude the latter. A better question is if the Sikorsky archive should be considered a reliable source, given that it is dated April 2012, is copyrighted, and clearly uses text copied from WP that was written several years ago, as shown in the archives, but without acknowledgment. Where did the other information in that source come from? Is that info copied from reliable sources? Until those questions are answered, the former wording is better. - BilCat (talk) 02:36, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
And you seem to have perfectly met our expectations as expressed here. It's one thing to jump right in and continue your edits as before the block. But dropping snarky notes on admin pages, and making personl attacks at WP:AN3, all within minutes of having your block released, certainly won't help your case any when your next block comes up for review, and will probably ensure that it is swift and quite lengthy. - BilCat (talk) 03:03, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Yup User:TeeTylerToe is right back off a block for edit warring and right back into edit warring the same unsourced POV text again as well as carrying out personal attacks again. I don't think the outcome is going to be happy for some people. - Ahunt (talk) 10:30, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Alas. (And with regards to Bill: if the Sikorsky Archive has copied text from Wikipedia, it cannot be a RS...) - The Bushranger One ping only 01:51, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Exactly. :) - BilCat (talk) 04:26, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
And it continues [2] - TTT continues to carry down the same path, ignoring what the references actually say.Nigel Ish (talk) 18:54, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
He seems determined to keep edit-warring and entering information contradicted by the refs cited. I am not sure where he gets this strange POV from but it is clear that no one else working on the articles, nor any of the available refs, agree with him. He seems also determined to get himself a much longer block. - Ahunt (talk) 20:43, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
I'm trying to have a discussion with him on the issues, but at this point he's letting his anger get in the way of that. He also seems to be using sarcasm as a subsitute for cogent arguments, which isn't helping either. :) - BilCat (talk) 20:47, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Yeah I am following that conversation as well. You are commended for keeping cool under the barrage of insults and "cabal" accusations, but he seems determined to keep beating that long dead horse. The refs he keeps waving clearly show he is wrong, but he won't give up and move on, so the outcome is pretty much predetermined. In the meantime this is all keeping lots of editors from writing new articles, bettering old ones and generally working on the encyclopedia. - Ahunt (talk) 20:55, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Well, I'm "retired", so since I don't do much in the way of "writing new articles, bettering old ones and generally working on the encyclopedia" anymore, I have the time to spend. :) - BilCat (talk) 21:01, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
This is getting curiouser and curiouser. In his last post on my talk page, he again dumps a large amount of specific information on the S-76's transmission, but again without any sources. He seems to be getting this info from someone (a relativive or friend perhaps), as he himself seems to use language that doesn't convey any expertise ("weaker" engines or transmission, etc.). Anyway, with his newest block, for one week, I'm moving on. - BilCat (talk) 10:06, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

I left him a note on his user talk page with some suggestions on what to do when the latest block expires in a week, but judging by the learning curve to date I guess this will end up in one further block. - Ahunt (talk) 11:26, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Judging by his reply, he'll return to edit warring, and get indef blocked for it. Sigh. I hope he doesn't resort to socking to continue his campaign, but given his behavior so far, I won't hold my breath! - BilCat (talk) 11:43, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
He didn't even get that far; he is now indef blocked for personal attacks on his talk page during his week-long block for edit warring. - Ahunt (talk) 11:26, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
I hate to say it, but that was fairly predictable. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:47, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't know if they are snow candidates but maybe you could take a look at each individual DR. If you decide to do nothing, its your decision, of course. Darn that Turner Classic Movies!

Just convalescing when this old (1939) "B" movie comes on, Five Came Back which not only stars an obscure airliner prototype, the Capelis XC-12 (which tried to reduce itself to parts when flown), a young Lucille Ball, a good cast featuring Chester Morris but also a screenplay with Dalton Trumbo as one of the team of screenwriters, the fiery director John Farrow and the very first of the airplane disaster genre films (I think other like films may have preceded it but this was the first I could find). WikiCup 2012 July newsletter

We're approaching the beginning of 2012's final round. Pool A sees   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) as the leader, with 300 points being awarded for the featured article Bivalvia, and Pool B sees   Grapple X (submissions) in the lead, with 10 good articles, and over 35 articles eligible for good topic points. Pool A sees   Muboshgu (submissions) in second place with a number of articles relating to baseball, while Pool B's   Ruby2010 (submissions) follows Grapple X, with a variety of contributions including the high-scoring, high-importance featured article on the 2010 film Pride & Prejudice. Ruby2010, like Grapple X, also claimed a number of good topic points; despite this, not a single point has been claimed for featured topics in the contest so far. The same is true for featured portals.

Currently, the eighth-place competitor (and so the lowest scorer who would reach the final round right now) has scored 332, more than double the 150 needed to reach the final round last year. In 2010, however, 430 was the lowest qualifying score. In this competition, we have generally seen scores closer to those in 2010 than those in 2011. Let's see what kind of benchmark we can set for future competitions! As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. People from Arab, Alabama

Can I ask you to withdraw this category? Here's my reason- Arab is a town in multiple counties. There is a person from it, and who knows maybe others. I did a google search but I was getting Arabs not born in Arab Alabama. Towns that fall in multiple counties are what I strongly feel should be a exception to the WP:SMALLCAT. BTW if you haven't noticed, most of these SMALLCAT nominees you or I have found were created by the same editor. Why did she do it I'd love to know.

I spend time populating town and county categories. A few days ago I filled up Humboldt, Tennesse. Humboldt is a multiple county town. I also created 'People from Strawberry Plains, Tennessee', an unincorporated area with a unknown population but with 3 notable people from it. Strawberry Plains is in 3 counties.

How do I nominate multiple towns at once? I'd go through a state(Say Oklahoma) and put up like ten towns all at once. Do I have to manually nominate the towns and make the entries on the CFD page? If so, how? Please write back....William 10:51, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Sure, I can remove it - no problem.   As for the multiple nominees, the way I do it is to use Twinkle to nominate the first one, then manually tag the others and cut-and-paste the original nomination's "...proposed merging..." line with appropriate edits for each of the other cats involved. - The Bushranger One ping only 20:56, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Ford Flivver

Just stumbled on this article, filled with mistakes, but was a unique look at Henry Ford's vision for a "Model T of the Air". The single-seat Ford Flivver was designed with Mr. Ford's instructions that it "fit inside his office". (The first prototypes had exactly a 15 ft wingspan, and you guessed it, that made the aircraft fit into his office.) FWiW Bzuk (talk) 16:01, 5 August 2012 (UTC).

This AfD

Can an article be speedily deleted for being a hoax? It looks like this one above is a hoax now sadly from other contributor's replies. Frankly, I'm not surprised as the only source I found on this person said he was convicted for fraud. If not, I suppose, this AfD will go on for another 5-6 more days and no harm will be done. Kind Regards, --Artene50 (talk) 23:38, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Well, hoax or not, once a consensus is determined following a relisting it can be closed promptly instead of running out a full additional week - so it's going, going, gone! There is a speedy criterion for hoaxes though - WP:G3. - The Bushranger One ping only 23:41, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the reply. I know that a hoax tag can be removed but in this case, it became very clear that this was a hoax especially when there is a unique 3 word name such as 'Charles David Parent.' Best Regards, --Artene50 (talk) 23:51, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

You decided to delete an article I produced at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Paul Atherton (2nd nomination)

I wasn't aware this article had been tagged for deletion and not that au fait with wikipedia, I didn't have time to defend it. I'd be most grateful if you would give me the opportunity to do so. As I'm sure you're aware the article had been online for 5 years and had only been challenged once, unsuccessfully, when it first went up in 2007. It has since been edited by many wikipedia contributors for from & style and not been challenged until now.

Reading the comments I believe, in part the problem maybe with Google, many of the articles that made Paul notable at the time, 2007 have now since disappeared from Google searches (I did a quick search on Leonardo DiCaprio and his 1st page results were his Wikipedia page, IMDb, Twitter, Facebook etc. rather than full of 3rd party sources that would make him notable - but I'm sure we would all agree that he is?). Although much of what Paul appears in is either temporary (eg. BBC News) or not online (eg. E.g. Private Eye), he has continued to make numerous appearances on National Television & Radio at regular intervals to comment on issues he specialises in since.

It was my understanding that once notability was established (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:NTEMP#Notability_is_not_temporary) “If a subject has met the general notability guideline, there is no need to show continual coverage or interest in the topic”

Any guidance would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Well, the main concern was that notability was not established in the first place, I believe. However, if you think that it can be established, I've restored the page to your userspace here, and you can work on it to address the issues raised, then submit it at deletion review for consideration for restoration once you're done. Good luck! - The Bushranger One ping only 17:19, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Editor Niteshift36

Another editor has made a complaint{http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikiquette_assistance#Niteshift36_uncivil] against him. Several editors, including myself, think he violates WP:CIVIL. Heck, Niteshift36 in the thread admits to being snarky but he doesn't think that's a violation of CIVIL.(Don't make Snide remarks is clear in CIVIL and snark= snide remark) Is his behavior actionable and if so should it be brought to ANI? Please give your opinion, and I'll abide by it. Thanks....William 15:05, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

If he's being unrepentant about it and WQA isn't helping (although mind WP:FORUMSHOPPING if WQA's still open), then AN/I would be the likely option, yeah. Personally, though, what I'd do in this case is let it slide, but if he starts up/continues again, then raise it at AN/I. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:47, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
He's being totally unrepentant and as snide as ever over at WQA. He admits to being snarky here [7] but doesn't think he is violating WP:CIVIL. Niteshift protects some articles in a way that discourages other editors from working on them. His edits are also uneven. That incident involving the Lee Sheriff County article he wouldn't permit in, but the article read like a PR release in part and had so for 4.5 years[8]. I mentioned[9] on the talk page whether the article should include it. Niteshift almost immediately deleted it. That info was up for a long time, and he had even edited it at least once. Suddenly after I bring it up, he calls it "promotional sounding material" and takes it down[10]. Go figure. I'll let the WQA slide as you suggest and at the same time try avoiding Niteshift's turf. Not worth the trouble unless an article is really out of whack....William 00:49, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

TCM again??!!

I found Night Flight on TCM this week, on the first-time broadcast of a long-lost all-star epic. Despite heavy-hitters John and Lionel Barrymore, Helen Hayes, Clark Gable, Robert Montgomery, and Myrna Loy, Night Flight (1933) has been out of circulation for nearly 70 years. MGM withdrew it in 1942 when the company's rights to the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (The Little Prince) story expired. It was finally shown again earlier in 2011 at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood, and now released to DVD in 2012 and television on August 10, 2012. Two Dawn Patrols??

The original The Dawn Patrol (1930) seems to have been "lost" under its renamed Flight Commander moniker. The interesting thing is not that there was a classic 1938 remake with Errol Flynn and David Niven, but that the Darryl F. Zanuck feature was the subject of a lawsuit by Howard Hughes who claimed that the film ripped off his Hell's Angels which was in production at the same time. Hughes was sure that Zanuck was creating a hackneyed and "cheap" film, decided to buy up the rights to every available World War I-era aircraft in Southern California, forcing the Warner Bros. production to resort to odd-looking and inaccurate aircraft. Zanuck came up with a clever ruse to defeat Hughes' machinations, he rushed his film into post-production and had it out before the Hughes film. Then at the trial that followed, both films were screened consecutively in the courtroom, scene-for-scene, to prove that the films were dissimilar. Hughes and Zanuck apparently continued the feud out of court and settled it on the golf course, where Zanuck won the round and a reprieve from the next threatened lawsuit. The Dawn Patrol went on to become an instant smash while Hell's Angels was the more significant film and became an iconic example of the genre, but never recouped its enormous production costs (for one thing, it had started out as a silent and was laboriously reshot as a "talkie" but also featured deadly midair crashes and even Hughes taking a disastrous turn as stunt pilot, rolling himself and his aircraft into a ball). correction

WRT to this recent comment -- I dispute I accused you, or any other participant in that discussion of bad faith. I make an effort to never accuse others of bad faith, as I believe that is bad for the project. I don't believe you will find more than a very small handful of lapses from this commitment in my entire contribution history.

To assert that I think you, or other contributors, are mistaken, is not an accusation of bad faith. I think after a moment's reflection, you will agree that believing other are mistaken is not the same as a suggestion they are showing bad faith. Various wikidocuments make this point. Geo Swan (talk) 02:18, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

The way that you phrase your comments, and the repeated insistience that others are mistaken, gives the impression that you are implying bad faith on the part of others, even if that is not your intent. - The Bushranger One ping only 02:19, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Requesting legitimate reasons for the deletion of 2 football articles?

Yes hello editor and fellow wiki-user,

I had recently created two football articles for players based in the United States and Liechtenstein, but both articles have been deleted. I'd like to have legitimate reasons as to why these articles were targeted, had requests to be deleted at the same time, and then were deleted without conversation?

The only reason that I have been given so far was a concern that I read, which was not a concern at all as far as I am concerned, and was as follows: " concern was: Article about a footballer who fails WP:GNG and who has not played in fully pro league.)". I understand the second part of this 'statement' as there is truth to the fact that both of these players are not paid professionals currently, however, to just make a statement saying "Article about a footballer who fails" is not only poorly written but it's also quite flippant.

I happen to have a working relationship with the football club 'Orange County Blue Star' that the player 'David Ponce' plays for, and if you read the Orange County Blue Star article you'll see that he has been mentioned in the clubs history and is also on their current roster. The club plays in the United States soccer league system for the 'USL Premier Development League', where the Blue Star are a highly regarded club. The team has had many players, both past and present, that have started their careers at this club and have made names for themselves. I believe that since David Ponce has been mentioned in that particular article with such highly regarded players, that he also deserves to have his own article as well.

The other player, 'Diego Haas', of Liechtenstein, has also been deleted. When I created the article of Diego, it was around the time that he was still eligible to play for the 'Liechtenstein national under-21 football team', and he had several caps for this team at that particular time. At one time in his football career, he was regarded as one of the best youth players in the country and he had played for the club 'FC Vaduz' as well as 'FC Balzers' and he is now currently playing for 'FC Triesen'. All of these teams are Liechtensteiner football clubs and are part of the seven official teams in the nation. In his career so far, he has played for three of the seven clubs in the country and he has only recently turned 24 years of age. Furthermore, all of these clubs play in Swiss Football League and compete in the Liechtenstein Cup annually, which means that the clubs and the player himself have significance. He is also on the FC Triesen roster on the website that they have and the wikipedia article as well.

The player David Ponce is still currently at University, but in 2013 he will most likely be playing professional football. I know this privileged information because I am involved with the club, however, further information regarding that matter will not be discussed further because it is privileged information as I said.

Can both of these articles please be allowed to be reinstated? I feel like both were misjudged. I put a lot of work into writing those articles and had put in my best efforts to make them look excellent for this website. I would like to add that there are far worse articles that I have read on wikipedia, not only about football, but other matters in the world as well.

A swift reply would be greatly appreciated, thank youPatrick.shea9 (talk) 06:15, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

  • First of all, the "fails" statement isn't flippant - it means they do not pass (fail) the general notability guideline. In addition, they don't pass WP:NFOOTY - the alternative to the GNG that says in order to have an article on Wikipedia, a footballer must have played in a fully professional league. Being "most likely to play professional football with the club" doesn't pass muster as Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. Now, as for why these particular articles were deleted, there is the Proposed Deletion system, in which an article is tagged and, if no objections are raised over the course of a week, they are deleted. The articles were tagged, a week passed without objection, and, therefore, they will be deleted. From your comments, you observed that the articles were tagged for deletion (the "not a concern at all" statement), and did not remove the prod tag (which is permitted if you object), therefore you de facto agreed that they should be deleted.
As for your comments regarding "there are far worse articles" and "since David Ponce has been mentioned in that particular article with such highly regarded players, that he also deserves to have his own article as well", the fact that WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS does not mean an article should exist. (Also please note that you appear to have a conflict of interest with regards to working for the club, so please mind the guideline there in your editing.)
Now, that said, I'd be happy to restore the articles, however I must caution you that if the articles are restored to articlespace, they're almost certain to be nominated for deletion, and it's virtually certain that neither of them would survive an AfD nomination. As an alternative, I can restore the articles to your own userspace as "sandbox"/draft pages, which, upon the players reaching the level at which they pass the GNG and/or NFOOTY standards, they can be moved back to articlespace then. So I can do that, as an alternative, if you'd like. (Note that if you'd prefer they be restored to articlespace, that's alright, but they're very likely to be more conclusively deleted if that's your choice.) - The Bushranger One ping only 06:43, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Serial reverter at List of Hawaii Five-0 episodes

Bushranger, you seem like a pragmatic guy. We've got an IP serial reverter (User:97.86.27.5 ) who refuses to discuss or provide an edit summary for an edit. He/she has made eight reverts in the past 48 hours, and refuses to respond to any of the multitude of warnings on his/her talk page (including three final warnings, the most recent of which I just posted.) Would you take a peek at the article and the editor, and see what can be done to at least slow them down and get their attention? The 3RR noticeboard would handle Hawaii Five-0 issue, but there's a larger issue with disruptive editing and serial reverting, which may also be going on at List of Mentalist episodes that needs more careful attention. Your help would be appreciated. Thank you! (Love the Hunt for Red October wink in your signature.) --Drmargi (talk) 20:15, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

I've semi-protected both episode lists for a week - that should get the IP editor discussing the changes he thinks should be made on the talk pages, instead of edit-warring without talking. If he starts back up after a week blocking might be in order as it appears to be a semi-static IP. (And thanks!) - The Bushranger One ping only 20:24, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the speeeeedy action! I'm curious, and I'm not challenging your decision: why, with all those warnings and eight reverts in under 48 hours, did you not block now? It seems like the IP is way overdue, and their edit warring is expanding. --Drmargi (talk) 20:28, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
In general, a block for 3RR would be handed down; had it been a registered user, he'd be blocked for sure. In this case, though, I decided that either extending good faith or some WP:ROPE (or both!) would be in order, giving the user a chance to discuss before swinging Mjölnir around - suddenly being unable to edit on their favorite "targets" might well be enough to get their attention, and it might help increase their WP:CLUE level instead of frustration at being blocked. That said, if they extend their EW-ing to other pages it'll be hammertime. - The Bushranger One ping only 20:32, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
That makes sense. I'm just coming off two sessions with IPs that included a day of being harassed by one, so I'm a touch down on the whole IP editor thing at the moment. Generally, and particularly at times like this, it's helpful to understand the how's and why's of administrative action. I'll keep an eye on our little friend, and holler if they don't settle down. Grazie! --Drmargi (talk) 20:41, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Annenberg Foundation

I reverted your placement of the article Annenberg Foundation in Category:Television series by Annenberg Foundation, which is a set, not topic, category and, thus, should contain only articles about television series. I've added a link to the article at the category page. (Please reply here, as I'm watching the page.) Best, -- Black Falcon (talk) 21:32, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Ah, thanks. I reckon {{catmain}} might be better - there's a lot of other cases in the categories in that tree where that should be changed... - The Bushranger One ping only 21:33, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
I don't know, really... I've not come across any clear instructions on when one should be used as opposed to the other, so I've always used {{Cat main}} for the head article of an eponymous topic category and {{Cat more}} in all other cases. -- Black Falcon (talk) 18:52, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Duplicate articles

Both are on a plane crash in the Sudan. 2012 Sudan helicopter crash and 2012 Sudan helicopter crash. The latter is a stub, so I'd suggest dumping that one. Also the crash didn't involve a helicopter but a Antonov An-24, so the first article is in need of a title fix. It's bedtime here for me, but I know you edit later. Also would the crash go on the commercial air crash list? This reads like a government plane crash. Can you make the appropriate fixes so far as the duplicate articles and the wrong name go? Thanks....William 02:07, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Hmm, maybe it's just lack of sleep, but those are the same article? ANd the references do say helicopter, or am I missing something?   - The Bushranger One ping only 05:54, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
Sorry about the double links. I was in a hurry before going to bed. There is some conflict whether the aircraft was a helicopter or not. News sources say Antonov and YSSYguy points out Antonovs were never helicopters.
I see Ryan is back. It had been about a month since his last appearance. Until this resurfacing I had wondered if took some advice expressed on your talk page. That Ryan stop editing(socking) for an extended time then ask to be unbanned. What he is doing now is a waste and Ryan could be a honest to goodness good contributor if he'd just change his ways. Forgot the processing itself?

Hello Bushranger.

A couple of days ago, I nominated Category:Nauru politics and government template for a name change. Yesterday night (my time), you removed the nomination with this edit, but didn't process the request itself. I guess it was a simple mistake, as you added a comment in another place, and then you simply forgot the rest. Right?

Cheers.

Actually, no; it's just that the bots that process category moves are currently down at the moment. It's in the processing queue for when one or both of them come back up.   - The Bushranger One ping only 07:12, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the response. I realize now that the processing of requests must be automated, as heavily populated categories would be hard to fix otherwise.

"Lost" Humphrey Bogart film

China Clipper is an unusual "à clef" portrayal of Juan Trippe and the start of Pan American World Airways, one of the world's most prominent airlines of the 20th century. Pan Am is long gone but its origins, flying the gorgeous "China Clipper" flying boats is showcased, with Humphrey Bogart showing up in a secondary role as a pilot on a maiden transpacific flight. Category:Non-indigenous fish species in Ukraine

Dear Friend! My name is Yuriy Kvach. I have created the Category:Non-indigenous fish species in Ukraine which was moved to Category:Introduced freshwater fish of Ukraine by you. I was buisy and did not take a part in the discussion about the category name changing. But I disagree with the new name. The category consists of not only freshwater fishes (you can check it!)m but also marine and brackishwater species. So, it should be better to change the name to Category:Introduced fish of Ukraine. What do you thing about it? Thank You! Sincerely Yours. --Ykvach (talk) 15:11, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Hmm, how does this sound: have Category:Introduced fish of Ukraine directly under Category:Introduced fish species, and have Category:Introduced freshwater fish of Ukraine and Category:Introduced saltwater fish of Ukraine as subcategories of it? That way the freshwater category can remain in the existing tree, and the salt/brackish fish can be in their own category as well. - The Bushranger One ping only 23:23, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
I would make the Category:Introduced fish of Ukraine directly under Category:Introduced fish species. I donot think the Category:Introduced freshwater fish of Ukraine and Category:Introduced saltwater fish of Ukraine are necessary. One category for all introduced fishes in Ukraine is enough. At this time the Category:Introduced freshwater fish of Ukraine consists of the Pennant coralfish (marine species), Chameleon goby (euryhaline species, can be found in the salt water, brackish water, and freshwater!), Haarder (brackishwater / marine), Bath's goby (brackishwater). In all cases it is not correct to put them to this category. The previous title of the category (Category:Non-indigenous fish species in Ukraine) was correct, but I agree that the title was against the standards. So, my idea to change the title to Category:Introduced fish of Ukraine under Category:Introduced fish species. What is your idea? Yours --Ykvach (talk) 08:58, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
The trouble is that the established category tree is at Category:Introduced freshwater fish by country - and it currently has 19 species in the Ukraine. I think it'd be best if there were seperate fresh and salt (=salt/brackish) categories. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:58, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
So, we need to create a new Category:Introduced saltwater fish of Ukraine, am I wright? But under what category? --Ykvach (talk) 14:01, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
Once a few more categories come up, 'Introduced saltwater fish by country' can be added. - The Bushranger One ping only 17:41, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

AfD: Inkey Jones

Hi Bushranger. How mush longer will the deletion debate for Inkey Jones need to go on for? I see 6 deletes and 1 keep so far. Most of the article still does not have any substantial references, apart from an interview and the self-published source.
Also, how can I request an WP:SPI or have someone confirm whether Sj838 (the article creator) and Popetman (who is resisting changes to the article) have the same IP address? Petergionis (talk) 15:28, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

WP:CIRCULAR

Advice needed.

Star Trek DS9 episodes article contain a link like this[ to in the references section. First of all, it is link to another WP article which seems like a clear cut version, secondly all the linked to article is is a list of DS9 and links to them. There is not one scintilla of information on the page that can be considered a source for these episode articles. One editor defends it via WP:SELFPUB and WP:PSTS.

I've been pulling out[17] these links, but somebody keeps insisting on putting them in again[18]. What's your advice? Yes and its been discussed.[19]...William 01:11, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

  • You are allowed to reference TV episodes and films to the DVD case/the film or show itself, for facts only - not for notability. But "references" to Wikipedia are never, ever allowed as Wikipedia is not a reliable source. - The Bushranger One ping only 01:17, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
Then the references using that article are wrong and not allowed? If they're allowed, then how?...William 01:24, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
No, in that case the reference is correct, as far as it goes - however it's wrongly formatted. It should be to the episode itself, not to the box set (unless, of course, it's quoting the back of the box), and it should not have the Wikipedia internal link. (Also it's assumed the plot is referenced to the work itself, so no references are cited in plot summaries anyway...) - The Bushranger One ping only 01:34, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Rasmussen Reports

Bushranger, I'm sorry to bother you but I seem to be lost and confused in an administrative spiral. In this thread you said that my query should have been raised in WP:DRN rather than in WP:AN/I. I don't quite understand this and I'm hoping for some explanation. Aside from the fact that an admin at the Help Desk suggested (see here) that I raise the issue "at somewhere like WP:AN," it seems to me that WP:DRN isn't the right place. I don't have any experience with that page but it says it's for resolving content disputes and is run by non-admin volunteers. I'm not seeking to resolve a content dispute; I'm simply seeking to have an administrative decision (the closing of a discussion) reversed so that the underlying discussion can run its course. I would suspect that the good folks at WP:DRN would just say sorry, we can't help you and point me somewhere else. --Nstrauss (talk) 07:13, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Well, they sugggested WP:AN - which isn't WP:ANI. The reason for my comment was that it seemed to me that as this was a dispute - over the closing - DRN would be the appropriate place, and if DRN said "sorry" then you take it to ANI. That is at least the steps I would take in that position - dotting all the I's and crossing all the T's gives you a stronger case if you have to take it to the 'supreme court', as it were.   - The Bushranger One ping only 07:18, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
