Maly Vysotsky

Yupik, by "conventional name" do you mean the name "that's commonly used in English" (as per WP:ENGLISH)? Because, if that's the case, you are incorrect. "Malyj Vysotskij" is not an English name, it's merely one of possible transliterations of a geographic name (namely, GOST 16876-71); one that's used by Russians and, consequently, by Finns—hence you get the impression the name is conventional. We don't use that particular system in Wikipedia; modified BGN/PCGN romanization (WP:RUS) is used instead, especially when it comes to geographic names, because otherwise, using your logic, every single Russian location transliterated via GOST would become a "conventional English name". "Conventional" names include "Moscow" and "Saint Petersburg", which are included in virtually every English dictionary, but not "Malyj Vysotskij", which is virtually unknown outside the area of the canal.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:12, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Катя, since this is English Wikipedia, the transliteration system that specifically targeted English-speakers was the most logical choice. BGN/PCGN conventions are used by governments of both the United States and the United Kingdom.

As for HAM operators—again, there are HAM operators in quite a few Russian settlements, and all those operators probably use GOST. That doesn't automatically make those GOST-transliterated names "conventional in English". Pretty much the same goes for the EU conventions—the fact that you can't find it there just confirms that the location is quite obscure and doesn't really have a conventional English name. As for the treaties, am I correct that they would have been signed by Russia and Finland—countries in none of which English is an official language? I don't know about Finland, but Russia uses GOST in its English-language treaties—the whole purpose of GOST is to provide means to render Russian names in Latin script, and international treaties certainly qualify.

In conclusion, if the topic of transliterating Russian really interests you that much, I invite you to participate in WP:CYR policy thinktank discussions. WP:CYR's goal is to establish a set of rules that would govern romanization of all languages that use Cyrillics. Once it's adopted, it will replace WP:RUS and a handful of similar existing policies. I saw the article on fi:, it pretty much the same thing as what was deleted here. Hi. I didn't delete the article; I merely nominated it for deletion. The decision to delete was made by Crzrussian, who was already provided his explanation above.

This issue is not whether the subject of the article meets the notability criteria, but whether the article makes that clear; as it was it did not. To give the article a much better chance of being kept, the best thing to do is cite sources which verify the subject's notability; preferably reliable sources, such as coverage in an independent news publication. No, I don't really have much of a schedule. I am currently putting finishing touches on administrative divisions of Adygea, which is now an FL candidate (feel free to opine there, by the way), and then I promised to start working on administrative divisions of Tatarstan to bring it to featured status, which will take me a while. I have no definite plans beyond that.

If transliteration issues are the only thing preventing you from working on Sakha, don't let it stop you. First, transliteration guidelines are all spelled out in WP:RUS. Second, names of all major administrative units (uluses, settlements, naslegs) are already available through administrative divisions of Sakha; just use those. Third, even if you make a mistake or two during your work, I can always fix it for you. No matter which area of Russia I'm going to be working on, I can always make time to help a person like you who is willing to cover another area. By the way, may I ask you why are you interested in Sakha at all, let alone in its administrative divisions? Just curious. You're welcome. By the way, for user ru-1 you pulled more than a decent translation. Looks like your Russian is not as rusty as you lead us to believe :) Anyway, all I did is to re-format the article the way other articles on Russian settlements are formatted, corrected terminology in a few places (e.g., a vilage should never be referred to as a town), and added Census numbers. Speaking of which, if you think you could use Census information in future, just send me an email, and I'll send you both 1989 and 2002 Census sheets. As for the official Census site, it looks that they are having problems with the main page (again). The actual data are still available, though. You can still access Census documents if you start somewhere in the middle, or you can access it via google cache.

Languages

People keep asking me this! I have no doubt that some people do speak many languages. Obviously, many educated continental Europeans speak 2-3 at a minimum. And some people, like you, are linguists and professional translators. But I don't believe for a minute that all the people who have these userboxes actually speak as many languages as they claim. For example, there is one editor I have dealt with a lot who is a very pompous, pretentious jerk. If the CV on his user page is to be believed, he went to a small state university and is now working in some mid-level computer job. However, he has about 11 language userboxes, including Greek and Arabic. Even if he had perhaps studied these languages as a hobby, or travelled at some point to all these places and picked up some of the lingo, he certainly does not "speak" them all, and the userboxes serve as additional puffery on a userpage that is already quite puffed. It was in response to dealing with him that I put that message on my page. But since then I have encountered a lot of people who use those boxes like intellectual window dressing, and it irks me just a little.-Dmz5*Edits**Talk* 03:44, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Yupik! Yumatovo and Oktyabrsky are not посёлки, they are both сёла. The full name of Yumatovo, by the way, is "село Санатория Юматово им. 15-летия БАССР". But, these two account for the missing two selsoviets; thanks for catching that. I'll work on this article a little more to polish it further. As for the "pochinok", this type of settlement does not exist in Bashkortostan (they only types of rural localities they have are "село", "деревня", "аул", and "хутор"). In any case, "pochinok" is a type of rural locality, not urban. Hope this helps! That name is a fine example of the Soviet system :) As for the types of settlements in each federal subject, it is my ultimate goal to put that information into the "administrative divisions" series. Currently, however, only Adygea has that information (you may also be interested in seeing its revised version, which has more details). If you need that information for another federal subject, let me know, I'll look it up for you. It is, unfortunately, not something I can quickly compile, so it'll have to be on case-by-case basis. Seltso

Yes, I do. In short, if you translate it as "village", you won't be very far off from the truth (as far as I know, there is no exact translation of this term anyway). The long answer requires some explanation. As you probably know, historically there were two main types of "villages" in Russia—деревня (derevnya) and село (selo). The difference was that the latter had a church, and the former did not. Churches, of course, were built in larger settlements, so selos as a rule had more inhabitants than derevnyas. Now, seltsos were different in the sense that they were villages around estates of pomeshchiks (помещики, landowners). They were usually comparable in size with selos, but they either only had small chapels or did not have religious facilities at all. Hence the intermediate status of such settlements—seltsos. Hope this helps!

Deaf-mute

Hi Yupik. I'm seeking opinions and possible support for an issue in which I'm in a debate with other Wikipedians. I'm trying to change indiscrimant use of the term "deaf-mute" in describing deaf people in general. I'd suggested to Strangerer that he list the ones he finds at PNT, since he was CSD-listing them as being "nonsense" earlier. Obviously a good quantity of what turns up at PNT is speedyable, but I think it's preferable to send them there in case there's an improvement rather than just Speedy-list them straight off the bat. Unbelievably a certain user has now put all of the cinema templates up for deletion including that good looking Finnish one above. I beelive they serve a great purpose for establishing a better understanding and connection between articles of each industry to make them flow. But in totla haste he has gone ahead and proposed the lot. If my hard work is deleted I really feel that I should leave wikipedia for good. I am willing to limit the use of the American template but not the others. It will affect thousands of articles already.

Skolt Sami articles

Hello! You're bot has been changing the proper Skolt symbol (´) to ', so we end up with changes like Puõ´ttem→Puõ'ttem. The correct char is, however, ´, so if you could have the bot change them back and then start ignoring them, it would be nice and something that I'd appreciate greatly. Luckily, back in February, I changed the way my bot treats ´s: it now only converts them to apostrophes when they're found in common English contractions. I am not done yet :) As a matter of fact, I'm working on the ulus article right now. As for the distinction between a nasleg and a village, a nasleg is actually a territory comprising several villages and territories around them. Sometimes, however, it may be just one village and territories around it, which is precisely the case with Churapcha and Churapchinsky Nasleg. That probably is the source of the confusion you mentioned. The bottom line is that the area of the nasleg is always more or equal to the area(s) of the village(s) it comprises. The only reason why we only have the Russian names is because I only know the Russian names :) If I knew Sakha, I'd most certainly add the Sakha names as well. Thanks for your note about Rafael Ernesto Flores-Obando. I agree that four publications is hardly conclusive proof of notability. The most I said was that the articvel as written appears to make a claim of notability, which is enough to take it out of speedy-delete territory. At an Afd, furhter evidence of notability might turn up, or it might not. I tend to apply the speedy delete criteria quite strictly.

I am glad that you were able to read this article and tagged it on the basis of its content, rather than just because it was not written in English. I fear that my command of any languge other than english is quite limited. I have seen a number of articles written in languages other than english speedy-deleted on that basis alone. Song of the Tibetan Lama

Thanks for the invite. I think the prod is appropriate - the uploader should be urged to contribute more than just the CD insert. I looked at the page regarding the singer whose album this is. There is a list of about 10 or 15 similar CDs. This is the only one with its own page. The article itself seems notable enough to me, but I don't get involved with bio-notability issues. I think the best translation of the title of the album (and the song it is named after) is probably Song of the Tibetan Lama rather than ...of the Tibetan Lamas. If it were plural, the last word would be in the plural in the Russian. It's probably my mistake from before, but I don't think it matters. I suspect the article will self-destruct in five days. Well, it is not included in the list of Pechengsky District's inhabited localities as of 2004 (through present), so it's definitely no longer a village. Sami articles

Hi Yupik, and thank you for creating and improving many articles about the Sami people. But we have sometimes created parallel forks about the same topic like yesterdays articles about the Norwegian Sami Association (my fault should have used english spelling of Sami). I therefore think we should somehow coordinate our work. Perhaps the best way to do it is to clean up the Sami people article and adding redlinks for articles we think should be created? I believe that approach is doable since the number of articles about the Sami is relatively small. This was actually discussed before, and the consensus was that having such an infobox at this point would be premature. There are not that many articles about Russian rural localities yet, and those which exist are so short that any kind of infobox would easily overwhelm them. A map and a coat of arms can always be added to the articles directly, and considering the recent improvement of the coordinates service (have you tried clicking on that globe next to the coordinates of any place yet? :)) even having a map is no longer that important. Just hi

I saw your name come up a few times on Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English so I looked you up. Hi! Your name caught my eye, and when I read on your user page that the name is unique, I knew I had to write. In one of the linguistics classes I took in college, I had to memorize the names of all indigenous North American languages (including their taxonomy - bleah). So the name did not strike me as odd at all.

I saw that you have contributed to some Turkish-language articles. Why don't you list Turkish as one of your language userboxes? Same for Faeroese.
