Olympic medalist categories

The categories were added because of the medal templates in his infobox. Since you removed the categories, I will remove the medal templates (bronze medal as coach 2004, gold medal as coach 2000). Thanks. -- Zyxw (talk) 10:38, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

But the medal table serves a different purpose. Coaching an Olympic-medal winning team is an achievement and the medal table is the way to display it as opposed to as a bullet point in the coaches' highlights field. In the case of the medal table, it indicates team finish, it doesn't specifically call a coach a medalist, as a category does. In short, the two aren't necessarily linked in that manner. Wikimedia received an email commenting on the messed up table in List of airports in the United States.

I also note this has been mentioned recently on the talk page.

I see that you are, by far the largest single editor of the article. I have no idea who introduce the era error but my hope is that you have enough familiarity with what the table should look like to make the correction. @Sander.v.Ginkel: Hello and thanks for your great work creating so many articles. All of the pages I edited still have the same Sports-Reference link, but now it is an inline citation for the sentence about the person's Olympic participation/results (the existing inline reference was often for the World Championships). Since the Sports-Reference link now appears in the references section, it seemed redundant to keep the exact same link in the external links section. -- Zyxw (talk) 18:19, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

One thing I don't know: is the link via the Sports-reference template copied to WikiData? Then it can be usefull keeping it. But that is not a big point.. Please tell me if there are some 'errors' in the article I created you are now changing, then I can do it the good way for upcoming articles, as there will come many more (from other sports) :). Hi Zyxw - thanks for your work converting bare URLs to webarchive! One thing I noticed in this edit. Generally |origurl= should never be used. The best solution is long-form URL per WP:Using_WebCite#Use_within_Wikipedia and WP:Using_archive.is#Use_within_Wikipedia about web-shortening services which can be used to hide blacklisted URLs. Thanks. I decided to convert some archive.is links to use the template when I noticed Category:Webarchive template archiveis links was empty. I only used |origurl= in Michael Brunswijk, which contained the short link http://archive.is/2XXVV. I now see that clicking the archive.is Share link displays the full link as http://archive.is/2013.07.03-132007/http://www.vi.nl/Spelers/Speler/Michael-Brunswijk.htm (though most of the 200+ links I converted had the date/time formatted as 20130703132007 and at least one used a date only format 2013.07.03, which redirects to the full date/time without hyphens and periods). Yeah it definitely needs to be done, you are the first to template archive.is (except those in CS1|2 templates). Looks like you have a good script. The 14-digit 20130703132007 is probably best because what archive.org uses so editors/tools are familiar. The 2013.07.03-132007 format is an optional convenience not technical format. It's a European style I think (using "." between dates instead of "-") .. they are based in Eastern Europe. But one could use all "-" as well 2013-07-03-132007. http://archive.is/YYYYMMDDhhmmss/http://www.example.com is probably best for English Wikipedia it's very similar to http://web.archive.org/web/YYYYMMDDhhmmss/http://www.example.com which is 95% of archive links on en Wikipedia. -- GreenC 20:01, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

AWB categorisation glitch?

Just wondering if you had any idea what happened in this AWB edit[1] on 3 November 2016 to Kym Ireland?

That one was easily fixed when I found it, but since you were using AWB I just wondered if there had been some undetected glitch in your AWB settings which might have hit other articles that I haven't spotted.

I have been doing a big run of gendering field hockey players, and was using Petscan to identify any I had missed. This was one of the ones which came up, but only because it had another hockey category. Other articles might fall outside this search.

Would you be kind enough to check whether this was a 1-off?

Bot offer

I wonder if you would like, have the time and knowledge to create an AWB bot that will perform this living people category recatogorisations such as this one. This is not done by AWB's general fixes. I found 250 pages. You could also add a logic to remove categories that are mutually excluded. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:38, 29 December 2016 (UTC)

Not sure I'm up to creating an AWB bot, but the current number of articles needing to be fixed is small enough for a manual AWB run. A regex search for articles containing Category:Living people with Category:Year of birth missing, Category:Date of birth missing, or Category:Place of birth missing only turned up 5 articles (3 of which I fixed without AWB). However, a regex search for articles containing Category:Living people with Category:Year of birth unknown, Category:Date of birth unknown, or Category:Place of birth unknown found 459 articles. Edit summaries

Yes, I use AWB for repetitive tasks and the edit summary described the main reason for my edit: "remove Category:Date of birth missing (living people) since already using Category:Year of birth missing (living people) (mutually exclusive)". However, I often read the articles and make other changes. In the instance you pointed out, I noticed the article contained Category:Place of birth missing (living people), and found that the subject of the article lists her place of birth on her website, so I updated the article and added a reference. Are you taking issue with the additional update or that the edit summary didn't mention it? If the former, feel free to revert. I think it would be more transparent if you made the other changes in a separate edit (with it's own summary). No, I am absolutely not looking to revert over an edit summary. When I saw that an AWB cat change added over 300 characters to the article, it was a head-scratcher. It made me wonder if someone was using a benign edit summary to camouflage content changes.

It would have been easier to review the edits if they had been separated, is my main point. Cheers,
