Template:Airlines of the United States

Hi. I just created Template:Airlines of the United States and wanted to know if you thought it was a good idea and also whether you had any edits you think should be made to it. Lots of other countries have such a template, so I think it's in good form, but I still think it could use some work. I'm also wondering also whether it should be split to continental US and Alaska only airline templates, as Alaska in particular has a lot of little airlines, many of which have no articles to their name. Anyway, let me know what you think, or just edit away. Or if this isn't up your alley, then nevermind. :) Thanks. --Allstar86 07:26, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Looks good to me. I'm just hoping someone will create the missing articles for those small airlines in Alaska which provide scheduled passenger service. Template:Airport frame

I was trying to get the templates out of Category:Airports since they are not really part of the encyclopedia. Vegaswikian 09:29, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I have removed Category:Airports from {{Airport frame}} and all the other templates associated with airport infoboxes: {{Airport title}}, {{Airport image}}, etc. This category being added is my fault: I originally did it in response to {{Airport infobox}} being tagged as {{uncategorized}}, then left it there when I later added the more appropriate Category:Transportation infobox templates. -- Zyxw 10:23, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for mentioning my proposed new airport infobox template at Wikipedia talk: WikiProject Airports/Infobox #Infobox overhaul. I planned on starting a new topic there to gauge the interest in using it, but got sidetracked with other projects. It was only after your message on my talk page that I realized it has been 11 days since I moved it from my User space to Template: Infobox Airport. Guess it's time I headed over to that WikiProject page and posted a message. Vancouver Harbour Water Aerodrome

I needed to get the image, with caption, in at a reasonable size so I used your new template. I like the way that it does not automatically link the location/serves as it leaves more scope for multiple links. One odd thing I noticed is I can't get the statistics to show up. If you look at Toronto Pearson International Airport you can see what I mean. Navbox generic/doc

Hi Zyxw, I've been trying out your template examples at Template:Navbox_generic/doc and would like some advice/help. My templates are at User:Ctbolt/RAAF4. What I want to do is to have my list within the Navbox left aligned so it is easier to view. In "{{Navbox generic" I couldn't work out how to left align the list however in your examples "{| border=0 class="navbox collapsible"" I could. However, I'm having trouble setting the state to collapsed and the colour to 'lightsteelblue'. Can you help? thanks - Ctbolt 03:42, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

In reply to your question about {{Navbox generic}} and making the list items left-aligned in User:Ctbolt/RAAF4, I looked at your template right after you asked and noticed you figured it out a few minutes later in this edit. There is still one small bit of code remaining from converting the table to a template: on the line that starts with |text-align = left|list1 =, you can remove |text-align = left. Infobox Airport

I just thought of another possible addition to the template. Right now you have seperate lines for owner and operator. I wonder if a third line as "Owner/Operator" might be useful. This came about because I just redid the London Gatwick Airport and Edmonton City Centre (Blatchford Field) Airport. The disadvantge is that it might make the line too long. Cheers. As per your request, I've updated {{Infobox Airport}} to support a new line labeled Owner/Operator. Take a look at London Gatwick Airport to see it in use. If you specify a value for the new owner-oper parameter, the infobox displays that and ignores the current owner and operator parameters. -- Zyxw 02:47, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Templates

Please be careful while fixing the templates, in this one, Template:Presidents of the Constitutional Court of Turkey, somehow the diacritics disappeared making half the template full of redlinks. McNary Field on Oregon List

Greetings, you moved Salem Municipal Airport, McNary Field, from commercial air service to general aviation on the List of airports in Oregon. This was done stating that airport does not have 2500 passenger boardings per year. Can you explain why an airport that will be having Part 121 Commercial Air Service in four weeks and carries a Part 139 certificate does not qualify as commercial service other then the number of enplanements? thanks, -Trashbag 19:34, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

I changed McNary Field back to "GA" (general aviation) on the List of airports in Oregon because the Role column is based on the airport categories defined in the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) Report for 2007-2011 [1]. According to the FAA, "commercial service airports are defined as public airports receiving scheduled passenger service and having 2,500 or more enplaned passengers per year". [2] This is then further broken down into "Primary" (10,000+ enplanements per year) and "Non-Primary" (2,500 to 10,000 enplanements per year). There are a number of airports in the U.S. which have scheduled commercial airline service but do not meet this requirement. One example is Ogdensburg International Airport in New York which has scheduled service via Delta Connection, but is classified as "GA" because it only had 2,078 enplanements in 2005. Regarding the bullets used as separators between the list items in Template:PiHKAL, I took a look and added the only one I found missing, between Ortho-DOT and Proscaline. To answer your question, the simplest way to add a bullet would be to copy one that's already there and then paste it where you want it. This image was used in the infobox of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport article until a recent edit removed it. The image has been restored to that article and the image summary updated to show it is "fair use" to illustrate the airport article. The page in my user space that contained it has been removed. The only other page using this image is Template:Infobox Airport/doc since the DFW airport infobox is used as one of the examples. Gardner Municipal Airport (Kansas)

• Regarding this version of Gardner Airport, the only clues are "1 runway" and "Gardner Air Show". A Google search on "Gardner Air Show" came up with this page which refers to Gardner Municipal Airport (Kansas), but it has three runways (unless you're only counting the one which is paved). Further Google searching turned up a New England Jet Rally held at Gardner Municipal Airport (Massachusetts), which has a single runway. The edit was made by User:Greenrd who has a userbox indicating he's from Kent, England, so perhaps it's not a U.S. airport at all.
• As for "display=inline", it's documented at Template:Coord#Usage. I came across this new template in this edit to Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Airport Infobox which said to use "display=inline,title". I removed ",title" because it was causing the coordinates to appear above the infobox, when the consensus for airport articles was not to do that. Since "display=inline" is the default, it looks like it can just be omitted entirely... I'll run a test on that and change the documentation if it works.

Biography templates

Good work on the biography templates! If {{Infobox Person}} now has all the fields in {{Infobox Celebrity}}, can't the latter be deprecated? Thanks. I have noticed the hCard format and have experimented with those using the Operator (extension) for Firefox. As for your first question, yes, {{Infobox Celebrity}} could be deprecated and redirected to {{Infobox Person}}. There are only three slight differences in the display: Celebrity places the name above the box, defaults image_size to 220px and uses right aligned field headings, while Person places the name inside the box, defaults image_size to 225px and uses left-aligned field names. -- Zyxw 06:59, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Infobox Writer

Hi again. Would you please answer my query above? I find the changes in the template very hard to trace, and I cannot understand where the error occurred. If this is indeed because of the recent changes, could I trouble you to see why and where, and could I ask of you that you make sure such changes do not harm the infoboxes in the future (or, at least, tell me what changes I should make in to those infoboxes)? I reverted Zyxw's edits to the template rather than leave all those broken pages out there. If Zyxw comes back they can fix it themselves. --Jaibe 21:17, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Mea culpa. I had removed a trailing vertical bar from [[Image:{{{image}}}|{{{imagesize|200px}}}| ]], which prevented the image from displaying if the imagesize parameter appeared without a value ( imagesize= ). I did review my changes by checking some articles using the infobox, but never saw any that had this problem.

• After becoming aware of the problem, I started checking ALL the 2000+ articles using this template. In the first 1000 or so checked, only about 40 articles had been affected (and those were fixed when my edits were reverted).
• There is another problem which existed before my edits: using imagesize without a value displays the image at its native resolution, expanding the infobox if width is larger than 250px. For an example, see Jonathan Coe.
• Back in June I started fixing the affected articles to include the actual image width if smaller than the default of 200px (the original intent of the imagesize parameter). I will get back to this project shortly and once I've gone through the remaining articles I will update the template to use the default width when the imagesize parameter is omitted or blank.

I noticed that your last edit to this template (in May) breaks the template when it is collapsed, displaying a big chunk of raw code instead of virtually disappearing. In response to your recent message, I looked at this template using three different Windows browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera) but could not replicate the problem you had with it not displaying properly when collapsed. Re this. I started using the other template after I'd done about 100+. Once I get finished I'll start over and do the ones I missed. In response to your comment: this edit only done because in the prior edit I added the IATA code but forgot to update the template. I have noticed that you are updating all the Canadian airports via AWB, so I've only edited those articles for other reasons (at the moment that is primarily related to adding or correcting IATA codes). And in answer to your question: I'm familiar with regex but by no means an expert. I'm registered to use AWB and have experimented with it. -- Zyxw 01:46, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Vancouver Harbour Water Aerodrome & Coal Harbour Water Aerodrome

I removed the CAQ3 LID from Vancouver Harbour as the CFS lists it as the Coal Harbour ID. I think that the great circle mapper made the error on the names as the Vancouver Harbour is also called the "Coal Harbour" and the "Coal Harbour Water Aerodrome" is on Vancouver Island. I wasn't sure about the Great Circle Mapper reference... it is one of the few sites that does a decent job of cross-referencing ICAO and IATA codes, but it's not 100% accurate, so I try to find a backup reference. In this case, that was seeing CAQ3 in List of Canadian airports by location indicator: CA. What I missed was the fact that Coal Harbour Water Aerodrome is not the same location as Vancouver Coal Harbour Seaplane Base (a.k.a. Vancouver Harbour Water Aerodrome). Deletion of Kirk Fraser

Im sending you a request. I've look over the deletion of Kirk Fraser, The original article had the incorrect spelling of his last name. Check out the (http://www.answers.com/topic/kirk-frasier) the article is still wrong. We originally created a new page on Wikipedia with the correct spelling and paste the content from Wikipedia with the incorrect spelling of Frasier. It was shortly deleted, we once again created it again, and it was also deleted. We don't know what to do. It seems like once it's up it taken down again, when it was originally put up by some one else. We just wanted to change the spelling of the Last name and fix the content that was wrong. Not sure what to tell you on this. Some people nominate articles for deletion if they feel is it not about a notable person or topic. The first paragraph of Meta:Deletionism describes this as follows:

Deletionism is a philosophy held by some Wikipedians that favors clear and relatively rigorous standards for accepting articles, templates or other pages to the encyclopedia. Wikipedians who broadly subscribe to this philosophy are more likely to request that an article that they believe does not meet such standards be removed, or deleted. Conversely, Wikipedians who believe that there ought to be a place for an article on almost any topic in Wikipedia, and that there should be few or no standards barring an article from it, are said to subscribe to inclusionism.

I tend to be an inclusionist and in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kirk Fraser I voted to keep the article, but it seems the deletionists won that debate. I think it is ridiculous that an article can be deleted from Wikipedia based on the votes of only 3 people, but I don't make the rules here. Your edits Template:Blethen consisted primarily in switching it from Template:Dynamic navigation box to Template:Navbox generic. This doesn't offend me, but it makes me curious. Is there any reason I shouldn't be using Dynamic Nav Box to create templates in the future? Regarding your question about my updating Template:Blethen from {{Dynamic navigation box}} to {{Navbox generic}}, there is nothing wrong with using the former, but it doesn't do anything the latter can't. I changed it because there is a move to consolidate the large number of navigational templates, which also include {{Dynamic navigation box with image}}, {{Navigation}}, {{Navigation with image}}, {{NavigationBox}}, etc. One discussion about this can be found at Wikipedia talk: Navigational templates #Style guideline for footer templates. -- Zyxw 03:23, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

Template: Mets

I see that you know what you're doing when it comes to templates, so I was hoping you would be able to answer my question. For a template such as Template:Mets, although it is set that a player's name is bolded in the box when it appears on his article page, this does not work when the article name does not exactly match the player's name, like for Joe Smith (baseball) or David Wright (baseball). It does, however, work for Howard Johnson (baseball player) even though it should run into the same issue. Any ideas how to make it work for everyone? This problem is caused by redirected links in the {{Mets}} template. For the name to appear in bold on the player's page, the link in the template needs to match the exact page name. For example, Howard Johnson is in the template as [[Howard Johnson (baseball player)|Howard Johnson]] and Howard Johnson (baseball player) is the correct page name. However, Joe Smith is in the template as [[Joe Smith (baseball player)|Joe Smith]], but Joe Smith (baseball player) is a redirect to the actual page Joe Smith (baseball). Template:Cleveland Indians

Problem with this template. I like that it now collapses and gives you the option to "show" or "hide" but in the "show" option it wipes out the bottom portion of the page. UPDATE - When in "show" mode, it seems to wipe out all other templates. On the Kinston Indians page, I moved this template to the bottom of the templates and it seemed to solve the problem. The problem of clicking [show] on a collapsed navigation box "wiping out" the contents below the box appears to a browser-related issue. I looked at Kinston Indians (revision as of 17:49, 27 July 2007) and found that Template:Cleveland Indians expanded properly when using Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2, Opera 9 and Safari 3 on Windows XP. I was only able to replicate this problem when using Internet Explorer 6 and even then it only happened when I was not logged in. This problem also occurs on other pages with a mix of collapsible and non-collapsible navigation boxes, such as Columbus Blue Jackets. One solution I found was a combination of placing the non-collapsible boxes first and making the collapsible boxes use the full width of the page.

When I made all the baseball team navigational boxes collapsible I also made them full width, but my changes were all reverted by another editor who didn't like the templates full width (see this diff for user's name and comments). Regarding {{Historical currencies of Hungary}}, normally all it would take to convert the template is changing "Dynamic navigation box" to "Navbox generic" and "body" to "list1". For some reason which I haven't had time to explore, Navbox generic would not properly display the embedded wiki table markup, so I converted it to HTML.

The confusion is probably because the current implementation of {{Infobox Writer}} has a parameter named relations which is displayed with the label of Parents. I can fix this, but first want to finish another project related to some of my prior edits there that had caused a problem (see #Infobox Writer above). And while {{Infobox Person}} does provide more fields for relatives, you'd lose use the writer-specific fields found in {{Infobox Writer}} (such as the debut_works field that you are using in the Bruno Maddox article). -- Zyxw 06:10, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Can you make a change to the documentation. It turns out the infobx must have "display=inline,title" or it's not picked up by Google Earth and many airports have already vanised for it. I agree it would be nice for Google Earth to pick up the airport coordinates, but if we recommend people use "display=inline,title" then we are back to the format that a lot of people disliked, with the coordinates displayed at the top right of the page and again in the infobox. I see there was already an earlier discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aviation/Infobox Airport#Google earth. Perhaps before recommending this in the documentation we should start a new discussion on that page or at Template talk:Infobox Airport? That discussion could include the possibility of removing the coordinates from the infobox and using {{coord|...|display=title}} instead. -- Zyxw 05:32, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

I will follow up on that in a while. I have left some examples of airports at Template talk:Coord#Using display=inline. If there is an agreement to have the coordinates at the top of the page all that needs to be done is change the line in the box to "display=title". It will will disappear for the box and appear at the top of the page, see User:CambridgeBayWeather/Airports with no infobox 01. I've been thinking about this and I agree the best solution is to display the coordinates in the title only. Since that appears directly above the infobox, displaying it again inside the infobox is redundant. It also makes for a cleaner look since the coordinates take up two lines in the infobox thanks to the new globe icon. I originally tried leaving the coordinates inside the infobox: | coordinates = {{coord|49|27|16|N|002|06|46|E|type:airport|display=title}} However, that caused that coordinates to appear in the small font size of the infobox text (which is made even smaller because the title area text uses font-size:85%): title when coord used inside infobox: Coordinates: 49°27′16″N 002°06′46″E title when coord used outside infobox: Coordinates: 49°27′16″N 002°06′46″E Therefore, I believe the best solution is to move the {{coord}} template outside the infobox. An abbreviated version of the template code from Paris Beauvais Tillé Airport follows: {{coord|49|27|16|N|002|06|46|E|type:airport|display=title}} {{Infobox Airport | name = Paris Beauvais Tillé Airport | IATA = BVA | ICAO = LFOB | type = Public | city-served = [[Paris]] | coordinates = <!--listed in title--> ... etc. Of course, the coordinates parameter could also be left blank or omitted entirely. -- Zyxw 23:58, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

The page referenced in your question contains a form using the "post" method which sends the form input (i.e. the 4-letter aerodrome ID) via HTTP. Sometimes these forms will also work via the "get" method which passes the form input via the URL. An easy way to find out is to save the HTML source to your computer and edit it. First add <base href=" "> (with the original URL inside the quotes) at the top of the page so relative links (i.e. "/cgi-bin/Fore-obs/metar.cgi") will link to the original web site. Then search for <form and change method="post" to method="get" (some pages will have more than one form, in this particular case the line we want is <form method="get" action="/cgi-bin/Fore-obs/metar.cgi"). Now open the edited page in your browser, fill in the form input and click submit. If it works, the resulting page contains the URL that will need to be used in the Wikipedia template. In this case, the resulting URL was: http://www.flightplanning.navcanada.ca/cgi-bin/Fore-obs/metar.cgi?NoSession=NS_Inconnu&format=raw&Langue=anglais&Region=can&Stations=CYUL&Location= and since "&Location=" can be dropped from the URL, the code for your template would be: http://www.flightplanning.navcanada.ca/cgi-bin/Fore-obs/metar.cgi?NoSession=NS_Inconnu&format=raw&Langue=anglais&Region=can&Stations={{{1}}} -- Zyxw 21:47, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Infobox church2: Help needed

Hi, I wonder if you're able to help to fix (or provide some advice on fixing) "{{Infobox church2}}". I don't really know how to use the complex markup needed to create infoboxes, and so have just been making simple edits to the template. However, I don't know how to fix the following problems:

• It's not possible to leave out empty fields. At present, the template requires all fields to be listed, even if they are blank, otherwise the name of the field appears in the infobox in curly brackets.
• The "(s)" in "Senior Pastor(s)" wraps around to the next line.

OK, I've had this template on my watchlist as I've been watching someone's uh... probably good faith but misguided edits all over. I'm guessing that something you've done, from your Edit Summary, enables you to locate all the uses of the template that include the use of the image size parameter, most likely so you can go and find the ones using it that don't need to and remove them. So... firstly is there a tutorial on making/understanding the inner workings of templates? As you surmised, I made a temporary edit to {{Infobox Person}} to locate pages with certain parameters that have more than one name. After edit some of those pages, I removed the temporary code from the template. As for a tutorial on templates, the only one I am aware of is Help:Template (but if you have any specific questions I'll be glad to answer them). This is an low-resolution airport logo, which is fair use for illustrating the airport's Wikipedia article. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Mobile Downtown Airport

As a consistant contributor to the Mobile Downtown Airport article, I wanted to get your input. Although this facilty seems to be called by many names, the Mobile Airport Authority operates the site as the "Brookley Complex", see Mobile Airport Authority for details. What are your thoughts on moving it to that? My initial wish was to create a Brookley Complex article, thinking that the Mobile Downtown Airport was just one facet of Brookley, but as I've done more research have realized that this is not so. I have plans for a major expansion to include the various aerospace and industrial companies, expand the history (especially its WWII history), touch on its status as a free-trade zone, and to include more on the site as a whole. I'm putting together my info and references now, waiting for some responses before doing a move. If you have time to comment, please respond on the article talkpage. No problem. I appreciate your prompt response. So we'll keep the title as it is. My knowledge of the intricacies of airports is limited, so I'll try to leave that part of it to the more qualified. I have two university-published books that detail the history of the site, so I'll be using those to expand on the history. I want to find a reliable source for the other major companies located at the site also, but thus far no real luck on this. I notice that the Mobile Airport Authority website isn't updated in some areas as you would think it would be, so I can't completely go by them. Am I missing something

There isn't any particular reason I changed those infoboxes from "IATA=" to "IATA=none". The program I wrote to generate infoboxes for U.S. airports puts "none" in there. Then I just manually copy any differences from the existing infobox before replacing it with the new one. I should probably leave those fields blank or remove them, since I do prefer the look of the automatically generated none in italics. Google earth again

I just noticed that airports that only have display=inline are now being shown in Google Earth. I know this applies to Cambridge Bay Airport and Cambridge Bay Water Aerodrome but who knows if it will last. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 04:41, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. It appears the Google Earth team fixed that bug in their coding, since coordinates assigned to an infobox parameter named "coordinates" (as is the case in the articles you mentioned) were supposed to be accepted by Google Earth regardless of whether the {{coord}} template used "display=inline" or "display=title". -- Zyxw (talk) 15:24, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

While making other additions to List of airports in Turkey, I changed the table heading text back to upper case because most of the other airport lists have it that way. I hadn't really thought about the Wikipedia: Manual of Style. If upper case goes against that, then I suppose most or all of the articles in the category: Lists of airports need to be changed. Coordinates for airports

Good day, a while back you added a template to show coordinates from the airports in a category to the Category:Airports in Oregon. Could you guide me on to how this works? I have been creating articles for the airports in OR but I do not see the recently added articles populating the .XML file. I am curious if I am goofing up on my end or what. The template you are asking about is {{GeoGroupTemplate}} and there was a discussion about this on that template's talk page. As per User: Para, author of the tool (http://tools.wikimedia.de/~para/cgi-bin/kmlexport) used in the template's first two links:

"With an article name the tool pulls the article from the live Wikipedia, but the more resource intensive category request uses the coordinates from Wikipedia-World, which is updated from the dumps."

Unfortunately, the Wikipedia-World project does not seem to have updated their data since 29 July 2007. That is why the Propst Airport article you mentioned (created on 22 December 2007) doesn't appear when using the GeoGroupTemplate link found at Category: Airports in Oregon. -- Zyxw (talk) 08:46, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
