Adding a new AfD discussion

Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Bands and musicians|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.

This autobiography was unilaterally moved to mainspace against the WP:COIEDIT guideline. There is coverage of his songs sourced in the article, but the short length and promotional tone (e.g. as seen here) makes it pretty clear these articles are derived from press releases, and are therefore not independent. ALAIZ collective

Article about a music production collective, not properly sourced as having any strong claim to passing WP:NMUSIC. The main notability claim being attempted here is that they and artists they have worked with exist, which is not automatically notable enough to guarantee a Wikipedia article in and of itself -- but the article is referenced almost entirely to directly affiliated primary sources and glancing namechecks of ALAIZ in coverage of the individual artists, with little to no evidence of any WP:GNG-worthy coverage about ALAIZ in its own right.
The article was, further, heavily weighed down with entirely inappropriate offsite links to the self-published webpages of individual artists named in the body text, as well as quoteboxes highlighting cherry-picked promotional quotes for PR purposes, all of which I've already had to remove as WP:ELNO violations.
Nothing stated here is "inherently" notable enough to exempt them from having to have a stronger notability claim than just existing, and better sourcing for it than has been provided. Bearcat (talk) 17:55, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy keep. This is a malformed AfD. The relevant guideline, which the article subject easily meets, is WP:SINGER, not WP:WEB, and just looking at the page shows more than enough WP:SIGCOV in WP:RS to meet WP:GNG. WP:SIGCOV requires multiple sources with independent significant coverage, which we generally interpret at AFD is a minimum of three sources. I kindly disagree, a single book may indicate existence of more sources. Even without references, deletion nominators are expected to do a good faith WP:BEFORE: to check Google, Google Books, Google Scholar, and Wikipedia Library if possible. AfD is not a place to urge people to fix unreferenced articles. Nomination must come only after there are good indicators that the subject is not notable, regardless of the state of the article; as stated in WP:NEXIST. Sorry for repeating these in multiple nominations of yours, but there are not enough people watching these nominations about niche topics like this one, and I honestly believe it will be a loss for the encyclopedia if these are prematurely deleted. @TheJoyfulTentmaker You seem to be misinterpreting policy language. WP:SIGCOV requires multiple sources as a non-negotiable criteria for all wikipedia articles. It's a must and its policy. Period. WP:NEXIST requires people voting to keep articles to produce multiple sources at the time of making a keep argument at an AFD. Asserting there are sources through guesswork is not following NEXIST; nor is arguing for keep based on a book you personally have not seen. Providing sources with url links or the names, publication dates, and pages of specific sources that you personally have looked at is following NEXIST. As for me, I looked at several standard opera reference works, including a Russian language music encyclopedia and found nothing on this person. I suggest you re-read WP:SIGCOV because it doesn't say what you think it does. The immediate subsection doesn't mention the number of sources but a bit further it says "Sources" should be secondary sources, as those provide the most objective evidence of notability. There is no fixed number of sources required since sources vary in quality and depth of coverage, but multiple sources are generally expected. @Oaktree b Just a note: during the period she was active, The Ottoman Empire used the Arabic writing system. So search is not trivial. Even modern sources include various different spellings of her name. Trying the modern Turkish spelling Verkine Karakaşyan, I can easily find at least one journal paper. Also, I can only see a short segment from the Google Books preview, but the book you linked might have a significant coverage (there are three search hits in separate places of the book). Here is the the second one, page 67: "... Verkine Karakashian read his poem “Freedom” and moved the audience so deeply that the ceremony was repeated for several nights in a row. After this incident, gradually more young girls showed the courage to go onstage and break the ...". Seems there is more before and after this passage, and this itself probably has a citation in the book; so if anyone has access to this book it would be really helpful if you could check. Separately, I added two more sources to the article and found the ISBN number of the book, referenced by CeeGee, who created the article. Keep per WP:BASIC and WP:HEY. Have expanded article and added more sources. There is enough WP:SUSTAINED coverage over time, including her 2006 performance after winning an anthem idol competition at age 13 and her long track record as a child singer in Lindsay, Ontario, prior to her big break on the national stage in 2017 as the first Indigenous singer in Canada to be cast by the Canadian Opera Company, which was covered in Maclean's, Toronto Star , University of Toronto Quarterly, and others. Added a mention of her 2018 performance of an original work about the Mississaugas' creation story as well as review mentions in Opera Today on her portrayal of Sarah Riel in the Louis Riel opera, and opera critic John Gelks on her performance of an aria from La Cecchina at the Glenn Gould vocal showcase. Out of experience, I find it useful to tag problems relevant to an AFD to help guide talking points in an AFD discussion. It may aid article improvements during an AFD if a rescue is attempted, or it helps others identify sourcing problems that may confirm a lack of notability. I made the search with "Maria Veretenina", but the search should be done in Russian, I think "Марии Веретениной". long interview another interview on Postimees but needs a paid subscription. Keep - Hassan & Roshaan are popular locally. Notability does not mean that a subject is covered globally. Local notability and noteworthiness are important. Additionally, their tracks and the band itself got nominated and was awarded by Lux Style Awards which is one of Pakistan's most prominent awards in the entertainment industry, this agrees with WP:GNG.. The subjects have been covered by Dawn News, Fuschia Magazine, and even on BBC's Asian network. If the grounds are that it the draft was moved to main-space, it was done after more references were added and part of content was altered based on the reviewer's feedback. The note mentioned moving the draft back to article space once it has been improved and it was done after changes were made. This band lies in the same category as other Pakistani singers/bands such as Young Stunners, Shamoon Ismail, Abdul Hannan. But only their track was included in an international franchise, Ms. Marvel (miniseries). Of course, changes can be made to improve it, but deleting it on unproven claims or UPE is unfair. There are more than 20 references added with in-line citations--and they are not syndicated coverage.

I don't think that's quite what BAND #10 means. Someone going to a restaurant where in the background a song is playing is to me incidental music, rather than featured, and possibly done for the purposes of product placement. I couldn't find either anything in previews nor any mention of him in the play reviews. It a complete mystery to me how they can jump to a keep !vote almost immediately without presenting any evidence per WP:THREE. Plymouth-Canton Marching Band

Like pretty much every student organization or team, this WP:ROTM high school band is not notable and should not have a standalone article: fails WP:CLUB and WP:NMUSIC. Sources are non-independent, very brief mentions, or routine local news similar (WP:AUD) to that my own high school's band received. Most content is fluff about personnel and awards received by countless competitive youth groups (11th place finalist, regional champion, etc). There are a lot of student contests and appearances out there like these every year, and even winning multiple times is not basis for an article. May be redirected to Plymouth-Canton Educational Park#Marching band.

Newspapers regularly cover local schools' football, basketball, band, academic, and other accomplishments, but we should not have separate articles for every one of those student organizations because they've won something. I think we would barely bat an eye at keeping an article about a football team with three national championships. Its article has survived two previous AfD's. That's absurd and utterly overly broad to claim NBAND with that. Dozens of schools have won and placed in this competition and dozens more have won other band competitions. This should be recognized in the school's article, not as a standalone article for the student group.

The Indy Star did not actually cover this: as you can see with "Observer life" in the top left, it was covered by a reporter of the local Michigan site Observer (hosted by Hometown Life), and it was not actually published in the Star but https://www.hometownlife.com/story/life/community/observer/2015/07/23/go-blue-cep-band-kellogg-park-plymouth/30579317/ there]. The second link is also the local Canton Observer, not the larger but also local Detroit Free Press, and in the "Local news" page, where they also cover the high school drag race team, an automotive detailing company, and high school football, volleyball, and soccer teams.

I think we would barely bat an eye at keeping an article about a football team with three national championships. This is not true, we do not keep articles about high school football teams, because every school has a team, many have won championships, and student teams and groups should be covered in the school's article. Yet Baltimore City College football, which dates to the 1800s and has notable alumni, appears to be the only one.

Indeed, articles written by a member of the student group, with lists of "legendary" and "preeminent" staff and flowery language, are crufty and should be avoided. Reywas92^Talk 20:36, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the IndyStar article are we really at the point of picking nits over where it was "actually" published? The point is that they get a variety of press coverage, and most of it reflects their multiple national wins (which kind of blunts your point about other bands winning the competition).

While going further on the article talk page I see that who created the article already admitted that he or she was paid and it’s also a sock to who accepted the article. That means they all planned to promote the artist here on Wikipedia with some sort of promotional news on blogs about the artist and his music. Abdul Hannan (singer)

This appears to be a WP:UPE. I draftified it last week, but the same editor re-created it at Draft:Abdul Hannan (Pakistani singer) which I also draftified and despite my request for them to submit draft for review. New users should ideally follow the WP:AFC procedure if they believe the BLP meets WP:N, but this wasn't done.

The draft has now been reverted to the main namespace. After reviewing this BLP, I don't think it meets the criteria for either WP:NSINGER or GNG. The creator of the BLP is actively participating in AFD discussions, even though they are relatively new to WP which suggests they are WP:BE. And I wouldn't be surprised if some IPs vote to keep this BLP in an effort to influence the outcome.

Additionally, the creator of this BLP brought their own creation to AFD to ensure it was rescued through the AfD process and the BLP remains - a practice commonly used by UPEs and socks. All those articles with serious deficiencies and lacks of notable sources. Delete per nomination. Rolling Stone India is a brief mention and most of Pakistani sources briefly mention him or are tabloid-style stories without any proper byline. WP:SIGCOV requires high quality references with proper bylines. His songs has been included on Spotify charts but they doesn't meet WP:GOODCHARTS criteria. Delete. After reviewing all the sources, it's clear they do not support notability under either WP:GNG or WP:NMUSIC. The WP:SIGCOV of the subject is in unreliable sources (non-bylined articles in sources considered dodgy per WP:RSN), and what coverage the subject has had in reliable sources is not WP:SIGCOV. Yes, he has achieved a lot with his band. However, let's not pretend that he isn't apart of the band. His achievements lie with the band, and the guidelines apply for not only an ensemble, but musicians in general too. That individual member still shares the same accomplishments as the band. Again, to highlight the first line of the guidelines at the top of the section: "Musicians or ensembles (this category includes bands, singers, rappers, orchestras, DJs, musical theatre groups, instrumentalists, etc.) may be notable if they meet at least one of the following criteria." Again, on an individual level, Matt Nicholls applies to ELEVEN out of the TWELVE applicable guidelines, not just one of them, regardless on whether they are with his band or not. This is like arguing that if Lars Ulrich isn't a notable drummer because all of his accomplishments are through Metallica and not his own, he just shares his achievements with other members. To add to this, Nicholls also qualifies for the composer's list as he contributes to songwriting: WP:COMPOSER "Has credit for writing or co-writing either lyrics or music for a notable composition." Keep both received significant independent coverage in a number of major news and music news outlets. The idea that an obituary written about a person is "about his death" rather than a celebration of his life seems a bit over the top. I don't know of any guideline or consensus that a non-paid obituary is not counted for notability. It's not just those two either:

I could see an argument WP:BANDMEMBER applies here although with a band this influential I'd put my thumb on the scale for Steinbachek for other things like LGBTQ activism and film scoring. I'm sorry, but I disagree and I very much believe WP:BANDMEMBER applies. I'll admit that maybe saying that the obituaries are about their deaths rather than celebrations of their lives was unduly harsh, but the pieces objectively only exist because their subjects passed away. I'm not finding virtually anything in reliable sourcing regarding Steinbachek's activism or film score work, and Bronski does not inherit notability from being one of three co-writers on a song that was a top 3 hit in the U.K. and a top 50 hit in the U.S. If you want to find sources that solely focus on the subjects that that meet WP:V and WP:RS and add them to the article, go for it -- I might even walk this back if you can find enough, but for now outside of their passings I just don't think there's enough coverage of either of them for their standalone articles to quite meet WP:NMUSIC. Just because an obituary was published by a reliable source does not automatically make the subject independently notable by Wikipedia standards -- to prove my point, I will direct you to two deletion discussions about deceased musicians, WP:Articles for deletion/Koopsta Knicca and WP:Articles for deletion/Lil Phat, both from this year (the former actually started by me, not entirely coincidentally). In both cases, despite there being tributes written by sources that pass WP:RS (including here and here, respectively), there was consensus at both discussions that there was not enough coverage of these artists for the purposes of standalone articles outside of their deaths, with the former article being redirected to the notable group he was a member of, and the latter being redirected to a U.S. top 10 hit he appeared on and had a co-writing credit for. Personally, I feel that Steinbachek and Bronski are in the exact same boat, more or less -- just because they were members of an unquestionably notable group whose music charted and went platinum in various nations does not mean they individually pass WP:NMUSICBIO, since notability is not inherited and outside of them dying the sourcing in both articles does not appear to establish it outside of the context of the group. I'm not trying to persuade you to change your vote or anything, but I really don't see enough in either article that couldn't just be included in the Bronski Beat article. Strong Keep - not merely a band member, he co-wrote one of the most iconic songs of the 1980s, for which books and episodes of music history have been published. That alone is reason enough, but as shown by simple WP:BEFORE searches, there’s clearly sufficient sources for significant coverage. His music has been called “landmark” by The Independent, an “anthem of gay culture resonates 40 years on … the haunting classic” according to The Guardian, Spin magazine focused on his individuality in their breakout cover story, and the Financial Times called his song a “hit was a heartfelt cry for liberation.” Scholars are still writing about the subject’s role in writing this song decades later. Beyond that song, he co-wrote a song for Divine, his work post-Somerville is discussed in the Encyclopedia of Popular Music, another book about chart-toppers, and in a book about Donna Sommer, all which I found with a few clicks. Which band member are you talking about? I ask, given that I have nominated two articles here and you don't specify who "he" refers to here. Though I'll admit that a good amount of the sourcing you've provided is pretty impressive, I'd recommend citing them within the article itself too. But as for you talking about co-writing an iconic '80s track and roles within the group, please see WP:INHERIT and WP:BANDMEMBER per the above back-and-forth. The last couple of sources you cite certainly contribute to independent notability, but the Independent and Guardian articles are about the song, so while they are from reliable sources and usable on the article, I don't think they contribute to notability for either band member since they're about the song and group, regardless of the individuals who contributed to either. Comment: there's a review of Thanks To Science, We've Got Love (page 6) by Nightshift (magazine), a review of Melatonin by Exclaim!, and a review of Arousal Disasters + an article by Now (newspaper). Jonathan Seet's website has a section for reviews of his music, although a lot of them are short and/or from non-reliable sources. Restore redirect to Saint Amadour. I can't remember how this came to be on my watchlist, possibly due to a previous article of this name that got deleted. If so, that does not seem to have been about the same person. There are potentially four claims to notability made here: As a visual artist, as a musician, as a writer and as a curator. None of those are substantiated. The article seems to be trying to inherit notability from minor connections to notable topics. The sources are poor. Many are just their writing, which provides verifiability that they have written, but proves no notability. The music coverage is minimal and one of the sources is a Tumblr blog. The visual/conceptual arts stuff is even thinner, most are just a single passing reference in coverage of group shows, mere entries on a list. There is potentially a fifth claim to notability in that they are described as an art critic here. What we seem to have here is a person who is trying various different things in and around the art world and who has yet to become notable for any one of them. I added a few more reliable independent sources (e.g. Association of Iranian Contemporary Music Composers (ACIMC)).

In my opinion, Rafie meets criteria for Wikipedia:NMUSICOTHER, saying "Composers and performers outside mass media traditions may be notable if they meet at least one of the following criteria: Has composed a number of notable melodies, tunes, or standards used in a notable music genre."

The competitions are notable from my point of view, especially considering the small world of contemporary experimental (classical) music. I disagree with the nomination for deletion.

Strum has co-written two songs on popular 00s albums - Come and Get it by Rachel Stevens and Still Standing by Kylie Minogue in addition to the single, Why Not Us? by Monrose.

Under Notability (music), Strum therefore qualifies under the criteria:

'Has credit for writing or co-writing either lyrics or music for a notable composition.'

In addition, Strum is eligible for inclusion under the criteria as a performer:

Keep - In its current state, the article needs to be cleaned up so it is less reliant on unreliable/insignificant sources, but it could then be expanded with info from the sources found in the discussion above. Keep I think some of the sources given in the article can count as SIGCOV, and as long as you have some sources that are SIGCOV, that many of the sources are just trivial mentions make no difference to the subject's notability. I can also see his works being mentioned in books and journals - [53][54][55], while those may not be considered in-depth discussions of his works (but not quite trivial either), they do show that he is known enough to be considered someone noteworthy. Keep honestly, I don't see a big problem with the article. It seems to be a musical artist. It maintains reliable sources reasonably concise, unlike other articles that do not have it and is more verifiable. Only source is a self-published website anyone can edit. It's certainly possible that this could be a notable topic, although I was unable to locate entries in standard music reference works that cover people like this such as the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians or Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians. Weak keep, I found mentions of him in some books:

Bach's Famous Choir, The Saint Thomas School in Leipzig, 1212-1804, devotes about a paragraph to Lange on page 22, where it's mentioned that he composed St Mark Passion which was performed into the 17th century

The Renaissance: From the 1470s to the End of the 16th Century, gives another paragraph to the subject on page 276 Microplastic Consumer (talk) 16:48, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately the second source is only available in snippet view, so it is hard to judge the depth of coverage. The first source largely covers his contributions as Thomaskantor which could easily be used to expand that article. I'm still not convinced a separate article is needed on this person. Here is a screenshot from that second book. More digging found a german language source from 1920 published by the University of Illinois; Geschichte der deutschen Musik von den Anfängen bis zum Beginn des Dreissigjährigen Krieges which on page 411 discusses Lange. Monatschrift für Gottesdienst und kirchliche Kunst mentions him on page 184 as well.

Meister der Renaissancemusik an der Viadrina, Quellenbeiträge zur Geisteskultur des Nordosten Deutschlands vor dem Dreissigjährigen Kriege seems to have some info on Lange (p 78) prior to being Thomaskantor, but is just a snippet. Microplastic Consumer (talk) 18:31, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
