Raven-Symoné categories
Hi there, I need some learned guidance. An IP editor changed the categories of Raven-Symoné with the explanation Replaced all references to "African-American" with "American". Race is a political orientation, not a taxonomic grouping.
I reverted on the basis that it needs discussion. The IP reverted again with the explanation There's nothing to debate. If the subject doesn't identify as African-American (which she doesn't), then she's not. SHE decides, not Wikipedia.
I figured I'd come here to get some education for how this should be treated. I note that in the article there is sourced information about the subject not wanting to identify as African-American or gay. Is that sufficient to warrant the removal of these categories? (Oddly, the user didn't remove all of the LGBT cats, only the African-American one.) Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:53, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
Stanley Lloyd Miller
Wikpedia: I received some e mails seeking to understand a rather peculiar entry for Stanley Miller. One stated "I was not aware wiki had fallen in with everyone else of using religious descriptors in it’s bios." " *Stanley Lloyd Miller* (March 7, 1930 – May 20, 2007) was a Jewish-American <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Jews> chemist who made landmark experiments in the origin of life <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_of_life>". I have made several additions to the article. They have all been accepted. The matter which was called to my attention is that he is described (as above) as a Jewish-American. However, when I tried to correct this, it never occurs. His Jewish background is well described in the following section of the article. I have no problem with this. However the description as a Jewish-American is quite out of line. J. Robert Oppenheimer is described as an American physicist, not as a Jewish-American Physicist. My friends consider this special title to be some anti Semitic insinuation. I do not. It is simply improper. Further, all of us who have know Stan Miller during & since his student days until his death know that he was an atheist. It would seem possible to correct this, but I have not been able to nor can I figure out your system for inquiries. G. J. - If you want to challenge the content of the page (Jew vs. atheist), you'll need to provide a verifiable reference. Personal experience -- yours or mine -- doesn't count for much because it edges on original research. There may also be an issue of Jew as an ethnicity vs. Jew as a matter of faith. I can't address the question of Oppenheimer. (I took the liberty of deleting the duplicate copy of your paragraph.) BTW, please use the signature tool on talk pages. RFC on identifying sources that validate claims
I presume this WikiProject has a little bit of experience with sources about birth dates and the like but for WP:WOP, I started an RFC here about whether we should separately identify information that is "validated" by some particular sources versus other sources. I can't explain it better than that while trying to put a neutral notice up. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 23:02, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

Wiki Education Foundation is seeking input on a Biographies training guide for students
Hello all, The Wiki Education Foundation has drafted up a short handbook for student editors in the USA/Canada who will edit Biography articles for classroom assignments, and we'd love to hear from experienced editors. The proposed text is here. If there's anything you'd like to contribute, please have a look! I'll be submitting for final design on August 31, so comments before then would be especially helpful. Jose Roy
I recently stumbled across a bio about a Filipino politician named Jose Roy and noticed it was in pretty bad shape (see [1]), so I decided to try and clean it up a bit. I think it's a little better now then it was, but there's still quite a lot to do. In particular, the article still needs some better sourcing. I tried to find what I could by Googling, but was only able to get so far. Since Roy seems to be have played an important role in Philippine politics from 1946-1973 or so, I imagine there are probably quite a number of non-English sources that could be used in the article. I think this article is one that falls under the scope of this Wikiproject, so I was wondering if someone could take a look at it and possibly assess it or revise it as needed. I know almost nothing about Philippine history or politics and basically was trying to work with the text that was already in the article. If there's someone here who's familiar with the subject matter, then any suggestions or input which can be provided would be most appreciated. I posted a similar request a WT:TAMBAY#Jose Roy, but I'm not sure what other Wikiprojects this article might fall under. Thanks in advance. - Marchjuly (talk) 04:19, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Help with Hansjörg Wyss Personal life section
Hi there. I have a request to move a few pieces of disorganized information from one section of the Hansjörg Wyss article to a new Personal life section. The information is related to Wyss' rankings and personal life, but appears in the middle of the Environmental protection section. There are more details about what I'm proposing over on the Talk page if any editors are interested in assisting. As I've mentioned here previously, I have a COI with this article and won't make these edits myself. Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 15:31, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
Max von Stephanitz
9/10/15 If you refer to the book Rin Tin Tin The Life The Legend by Susan Orlean you will find out the surrounding of Mr. von Stephanitz's death. The short of it is that the Nazis wanted him to join and hand over is German Shepard Organization to them, but he refused. Later they "convinced" him to hand over the organization. That day he died. She never said, but I'm assuming they killed him.

Regarding article on Thomas KNAGGS. You indicate that it is not known whom he married. The Parish Register of Grantchester, Cambridgeshire allegedly contains a marriage record dated 9 August 1681 for Thomas KNAGGS and Elizabeth GREEN, both of Cambridge. Grantchester Parish is contiguous with Cambridge. Thomas KNAGGS appears to have been a student at Cambridge University at that time. There does not appear to be any other Knaggs surname vital records in Grantchester between 1681 and 1542, when an Elizabeth KNAGES married William Caro. 65.30.37.192 (talk) 22:45, 12 September 2015 (UTC) Gary Suhm

Possible approach to the "core biographies"
I was wondering what the rest of you might think of maybe trying to develop over at wikisource some of the older, PD encyclopedic articles for the less-highly-assessed core biography articles. So, perhaps, we might make sure that the various PD Encyclopedia Britannica, for instance, articles on those individuals, where they exist of course, be developed, and then maybe both provide at least one easily available comparable biography, and, theoretically, where there may not have been significant changes in the historical views of those persons, a useful "rough draft" of our own articles here, and what they should cover and to what weight various subtopics should be covered in them. Anyone interested? John Carter (talk) 20:37, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

Ernst Levy (composer)
Hi. I wonder if anyone could help clean up this page a bit by:1. separating Vocal and Chamber Works, which are jumbled together. 2. The list of compositions isn't complete. The most comprehensive listing of Levy's compositions are on this page: http://ernstlevy.musicaneo.com/sheetmusic/. 3. It would be great to have a discography, as Ward Marston has produced a number of CDs of "found" recordings of his piano playing. And there are a number of other recordings. 4. There are a couple of Youtube selections of his compositions, and all the piano recordings are on there, I think. 5. He has two sons. One is an engineer and author matthyslevy.com. 6. Why don't I do this myself? Sorry to ask others, but I don't know anyone who edits on Wikipedia. Blessings. --Jeanhenley (talk) 19:31, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
Proposal: Create Draft, file and redirect classes for WP Biography
As I asked before, I think we should allow for Draft, File and Redirect classes to be included. We could then split Category:NA-Class biography articles to remove them and also have draft-classes for each of the task forces. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 05:07, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

- Support inclusion of draft class particularly, and Redirect to a degree although I would have some questions about File class if it were to be used for photos of people, because that would quickly just become useless. John Carter (talk) 17:49, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
- @John Carter: There's already plenty of files in Category:NA-Class biography articles (photos of people and signatures). The file class would allow for those to be removed from the NA class (which would be left for I don't know what, userspace draft) and separated. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:01, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- At the Academic Journals project, we use the NA class for things that don't fall into any other class, such as category redirects, file redirects, and template redirects. --Randykitty (talk) 07:53, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

MOS:IDENTITY is being revisited: How should Wikipedia refer to transgender individuals before and after their transition?
A recent discussion of MOS:IDENTITY closed with the recommendation that Wikipedia's policy on transgender individuals be revisited.
Two threads have been opened at the Village Pump:Policy. The first addresses how the Manual of Style should instruct editors to refer to transgender people in articles about themselves (which name, which pronoun, etc.). The second addresses how to instruct editors to refer to transgender people when they are mentioned in passing in other articles. Your participation is welcome. Why no article?
I don't do biographical articles (nowhere close to being up to speed on the conventions), but while editing 508th Aerospace Sustainment Wing, I looked to add a Wikilink to a notable commander, Gerald W. Johnson, and was amazed to find there was no Wikipedia Article on him. I'd argue he is more notable than any of the Gerald W. Johnsons who have articles about them, and Gerald W. Johnson (military officer) would be superflouous. I'd suggest that someone who works in the area of military bios might give this a shot. His official USAF biography [2] would be a good place to start. Reasons:
- First ace of the noted 56th Fighter Group
- Second American ace in the European Theater of Operations
- First ace in the Army Air Forces to exceed Eddie Rickenbacker's World War I record of 26 enemy aircraft destroyed (although the rules were different)
- First commander of the 4080th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, first USAF unit to fly the U-2
- Commanded Eighth Air Force during the Vietnam War, controlling all heavy bomber and tanker assets in the Pacific.
- Was a Lieutenant General, which creates at least a presumption of notabilty by itself.
I'll post this at WP:MILHIST as well. --Lineagegeek (talk) 23:33, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
- Do you just wanna start this at Gerald W. Johnson (military officer)? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:39, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Electronic sports players naming conventions
I recently discovered that electronic sports players pages have been getting renamed with bad naming conventions along the lines of First name "Pseudonym" Surname. After getting called out multiple times by myself and others, the person responsible for this has been changing these page names to purely the pseudonyms, which I think is a terrible concept. However, I want to be sure. Just from looking around, I can see the following pages with this naming convention I disagree with: GeT RiGhT, Leffen, Fredrik "MaDFroG" Johansson, F0rest, Ryan "Saiyan" Danford (Halo player), Reginald (professional video gaming), Dyrus, Greg "Idra" Fields, GH057ayame, Victor "Lil Poison" De Leon III, Fear (Dota 2 player), Chris "HuK" Loranger, Carlos "Cpt Anarchy" Morales, Nadeshot, NYChrisG, etc, etc... As the eSports task force doesn't really have ground rules for much of anything and lacks experienced editors, I feel it's more appropriate to hear some thoughts from WikiProject Biography, to see if the naming conventions should remain simply with first and last names like most every other article. The banner that accompanies the article does not appear warranted by the article's contents.
The banner that appears above this article claims that the article does not provide factual information and that it is hyperbolically laudatory of its subject. Neither seems to be true when one reads the article.
The author or authors cite patents and include patent numbers when making claims about Russell's accomplishments. There are also numerous references at the end of the article.
While the article is laudatory, it is certainly no more so than many other articles about inventors or scientists and considerably less so than some that I have read. A Wikipedia entry of this kind should be expected to praise its subject, since the subject is an inventor who made major contributions to an important technology. Is there an agenda here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.16.151.183 (talk) 01:31, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject Biography participants may be good administrators
Participants here often create a lot of content, have to evaluate whether or not a subject is notable, decide if content complies with BLP policy, and much more. Well, these are factors at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship.
So, please consider taking a look at and watchlisting this page:
You could be very helpful to evaluate potential candidates, and maybe even find out if you would be a suitable RfA candidate.

BC births and deaths categories
The categories for births and deaths in years BC were rather small, and a series of CFD decisions resulted in consensus to upmerge them to centuries/decades, and to the year categories. For example, a death in 14 BC was recategorised from Category:14 BC deaths to Category:10s BC deaths and Category:14 BC.
Towards the end of that process, it was pointed out that biographies should not go directly in year categories because of WP:COPSEP. This led to a DRV and RfC, which was recently closed as:
(option 5:) Return to earlier guideline-conforming scheme adding "rollup" categories by decade/century
The "roll-up" on decade categories, as currently seen at Category:0s deaths, is simply done using <categorytree mode=pages>0s deaths</categorytree> on that page. The parameter in the middle has to match the page name. AFAIK this "rollup" code will have to be added manually.
The old categories will have to be undeleted by admins, and either cleaned up manually or listed at WP:CFDWR so that Cydebot will remove the CFD templates from them.
I believe the member pages (biography articles) will also have to be reverted manually. The best help that I can offer as an admin is to provide links to the diffs made by Cydebot or ArmbrustBot when emptying the old categories.
Armbrust has confirmed at Wikipedia:Bot_requests#BC_births_and_deaths_categorizations that he does not mind if we use rollback or undo on his bot's edits. Some articles were edited after the bot, in which case Undo is needed from history, rather than Rollback straight from the list of contribs.
Marcocapelle (talk · contribs), as nominator, and Francis Schonken (talk · contribs), who posted the RfC, may will be willing to share in the work of reversing the upmerges. Assistance from members of this WikiProject would be greatly appreciated, and I hope it will be forthcoming as it was for BIO-related reasons that the consensus at CFD was reversed.
(Note: A short follow-up discussion took place at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Years#BC_births_and_deaths_categories, from where I have moved the list below.)
The CFDs listing the births/deaths categories to be reinstated are:
- Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2015 May 25#1st to 5th century BC births
- Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2015 May 30#1st to 6th century BC deaths

I have moved my "Progress marker" section back to the bot requests page: Wikipedia:Bot_requests/Archive_71#Subthread 3 – repopulating BC births and deaths categories. – Fayenatic London 10:10, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
- Please would members of this project help to re-categorise ancient people by year of birth and death? See the discussion at the above link.
- Also, an issue has just come up there about people for whom the exact year is uncertain: in such cases, is it better to categorise by an approximate year of death, or by decade of death? The latter would give a more untidy result on the decade pages because of the new "rollup" code which was wanted at Wikipedia talk:Categorization of people#RfC: BC births and deaths categorization scheme; see Category:40s BC deaths for an example in practice. Please respond at the bot request talk page (see link above). – Fayenatic London 14:26, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
Infobox content
IMHO, Resting Place should be changed to Buried, per WP:EUPHEMISM. Let's not be dancing lightly around a natural situation. GoodDay (talk) 13:25, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- To cut and paste my previous comment on this matter,
remember, this is a template we're talking about, not an article; it needs to be able to cover situations which are definitely not burial, ranging from "stuffed and put on display as a museum specimen" to "cremated and scattered on the pitch at Macclesfield Town". In that context, I think "resting place" is going to be least-worst option, unless we go with something unreasonably literal like "current whereabouts of body".
I stand by that, no compromise is ever going to be perfect, but "Burial" is going to be actively misleading on multiple pages. ‑ iridescent 16:19, 31 October 2015 (UTC)- Um, what infobox in particular are we talking about here? I would myself have serious reservations about using "buried" exclusively. People who are placed in a Tower of silence, or ship burials, for instance, probably can't be said to be "buried" anywhere. And I suppose there might exist a few questions about other traditions of dealing with the bodies of the dead. One that comes to mind is the old Jewish custom of second burials. ~I'm not myself sure those occurred in roughly the same place, and if they didn't we might have to list multiple locations, which might look strange to a lot of eyes. John Carter (talk)
- Yes, there'd be exceptions. But, I'm considering articles like Lester B. Pearson or Chester A. Arthur, articles of those who are buried. GoodDay (talk) 17:13, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- I got that. But before anything can be done I think we would probably need to know:
- 1) Which particular template are you considering making the change to, or would it basically be to all the biography infoboxes. And
- 2) Are we talking about removing the resting place terminology altogether, or offering a number (1 or more) of specified alternative options in some form of subparameter
- I think the big problem here with a lot of the biography infobox templates is that they were designed for a kind of "one size fits all" usage which doesn't really work with the divergent traditions of dealing with corpses. "Resting place," despite its euphemistic nature, is also maybe one of the few phrases which can be used in pretty much all cases. John Carter (talk) 17:27, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- There is or was a mechanism in royal consort bios infoboxes for showing reign as tenure. Perhaps, if we could set up mechanism for showing resting place as buried. GoodDay (talk) 18:17, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

- Yes, there'd be exceptions. But, I'm considering articles like Lester B. Pearson or Chester A. Arthur, articles of those who are buried. GoodDay (talk) 17:13, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- "Disposition of remains" is a generic, non-euphemistic term that is used. isaacl (talk) 17:58, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- The label doesn't have to be exclusive. I can edit {{Infobox person}} to accept a parameter such as
|burial=
which would override|resting place=
and display the label Burial, which would allow us to display the alternative label when desired. I just need to know what alternative label people want. --RexxS (talk) 18:27, 31 October 2015 (UTC)- Buried or Burial place, either would suffice. GoodDay (talk) 18:54, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- I've modifed the template's sandbox Template:Infobox person/sandbox to accept a
|burial=
parameter that can be used instead of the default|resting place=
. At present it displays the label as Burial and you can see an example at Julius Beer. It would be trivial to change the label to whatever consensus arrives at. --RexxS (talk) 22:00, 31 October 2015 (UTC)- I'll give credit of the bringing up the euphemism concern to Giano. Thanks for the fixtures, Rexxs. GoodDay (talk) 22:50, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

- Why not have "Buried" as a field but also an optional "Disposition" with "Disposition_name" so that people can include "Mummified and displayed - Tiananmen Square" or "Ashes scattered - Haystacks" as required? Like {{infobox school}} allows for variations on the title of headteacher. PamD 15:31, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Albert Folch Folch
I'm looking for feedback on Albert Folch Folch. I've been trying to clean up it up a bit, but I've sort of hit the wall. I have some concerns about whether the subject is even notable enough for a stand-alone article per WP:ACADEMIC or WP:ARTIST and much of the sourcing seems to be WP:BLPSELFPUB stuff. Lots of what is in the article seems fairly promotional in nature as well. Thanks in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:26, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
RfC about the Duke of Windsor (Edward VIII) article
There arose a dispute about the proper extent of the Duke of Windsor's wartime activities in regards the German Nazi regime. An editor feels that the pro-Nazi sympathies and activities, including one act of treason, is not reflected with the appropriate due weight in the article, and believes that the insertion of an extract of a German embassy cable should be added, as a footnote. Another editor feels that quoting the entire text of the cable is overkill, and that overall the article is consistent with the views that are presented in scholarly discourse and presents them with due weight and cites them to reliable sources. The question is now being put forth to Wikipedia editors whether to Support the addition of the contested material in a footnote or Oppose it. Anyone interested to participate in the relevant RfC is welcome. -The Gnome (talk) 14:07, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

Experienced Editor Help Please
I wrote this also on the Help Desk, which suggested I try find an experienced editor, so I am here!
So the following article was covered in a Deletion Review and the result was 'No consensus' and not to resubmit until the article has been improved (see Wikipedia:Deletion_review#Draft:Alex_Gilbert_.28closed.29 Here is the article Draft:Alex Gilbert. I can't submit it for review as it will just get deleted as it has before, this was before it was improved or when anyone even looked clearly at the sources. It was also reviewed in the past and was approved, moved to the main space and then deleted as it had to go through Deletion Review. The article is about NZ Adoptee Alex Gilbert, who has since established a Non-Profit Organisation 'I'm Adopted' (facebook.com/imadoptedOrg). This itself was covered in a lot of Russian Media. I have noted these references in the article and I have also described these below. I am having trouble and editors are just not clearly looking at the sources/references. People think its a Wikipedia:BLP1E, which NO the sources cover his Book and his Non-Profit Organisation. I have decided to list these in detail below. This article clearly covers basic notability. If someone can put this below into a Deletion Review or help me, I am happy to talk! I need an experienced editor to have a look at the article. Please any Russian Editors!

Thank You for your time- Dmitry --DmitryPopovRU (talk) 04:50, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
- DmitryPopovRU, thank you for taking the time to write this article and trying to improve it. While the individual's story is interesting, I question if he and his story is sufficiently notable. For example, while his film My Russian Side may or may not be well made, it's not listed on IMDB, and neither is Alex Gilbert. He appears to have been on New Zealand TV once. As described by the Wikipedia guidelines, the subject of the article should have "gained sufficiently significant attention by the world at large and over a period of time". All of the references appear to come from two countries in less than a single year's time span and all are about his adoption or his non-profit supporting adoption. As noted by Howicus in the draft article, you should be able to find multiple reliable, independent sources for things totally unrelated to his search for his biological parents over a period of time, which I suggest is greater than a year or two. Otherwise he's a one-note band. — btphelps (talk to me) (what I've done) 07:39, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
Seeking input about the inclusion of a high school in a BLP article
An editor and I are having a disagreement on the article Ted Deutch about whether the article subject's high school should be included. I've added a half-sentence reference to the "Early life and education" section, as well as a category identifying him as Liberty High School alumni, but the editor has repeatedly reverted it ([25] [26] [27] [28]). In the talk page, he says that it's "silly trivia of no importance" and "not important enough to include in his article", with which I obviously disagree. I'd like to gather more input to determine a WP:CONSENSUS as to whether this information should be included, so any feedback at Talk:Ted Deutch#Inclusion of high school would be appreciated. Please keep the conversation there, not here on this talk page, so it's all in one place. Thanks! — Hunter Kahn 15:34, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
- Adding the name of the high school a person attended is pretty much trivia unless the high school itself is notable, or the individual did something notable that is directly assciated with that high school. This is a tempest in a teapot about a half-sentence and a categroy. I disagree with the other editor's repeated reverting, but let it go and move on. — btphelps (talk to me) (what I've done) 07:44, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
User, Jack DeMattos removal of photos uploaded by OSMOND PHILLIPS and calling them bogus.
You are a published writer, but that obviously does not make you a knowledgeable on identifying photos of the people you write about. Especially since there are not many photos available to compare to. It does take some experience to properly identify these people. It cannot be done with just a quick glance and judgement as you have done. You are not known as having any experience in identifying photographs. This collection is getting known as credible and submitting credible photographs of our old west lawmen and outlaws. I may not be able to write well or impress anyone with my words, but these photos I know. The collection that these photographs come from was put together before you were born, received from family and friends of the deceased people back when there were very little photos to use for comparison. Collectors, typically with money, could afford to buy their hearts desire. Museums have great artifacts, R.G McCubbin has a fantastic collection of old west photographs. Isn't it possible that someone else could of also amassed such a collection? This collection is backed by some influential people and is growing in credibility and popularity everyday. Photos from this collection have been requested by prominent film producers for use with their further investigation to be certain it is of the person claimed. You will soon see some of the photos you dispute on Discovery and National Geographic. You add to our history. Do not block others who may also know their business and contribute to history in their own way. I have attached below the photo with comparisons you dispute to help you identify the people you write about. You can click on the photo to enlarge it for analysis. Luke Short comparisons
- Hi OSMOND PHILLIPS, we've been in contact before. If you are seeking input or comment on this dispute, then you need to phrase your statements in the form of a question. You should also try to keep the discussion in one place, preferably on the article's talk page, or if the issue spans multiple articles, then you might consider beginning a thread on the Request for Comment board. You can then post a notice hear requesting input there. Based on the info you wrote above, it appears that two individuals who both think they know something about the Old West are locking horns about pictures that have been accepted for posting to WP. But based on traditional methods for identifying the provenance of pictures and the individuals in those pictures, the images you've added kind of emerged out of black box, or in actuality, two old photo albums found in a thrift store around 1995 whose prior ownership is subject to question. Thus the images have not yet gained full credibility.
- I ran into the issue of validating images while attempting to verify if the so-called Kaloma picture of the woman in a sheer peignoir that Glen Boyer put on the cover of I Married Wyatt Earp was actually Josephine Earp. What I found, as stated in the article, is that the experts believe that "Many individuals share similar facial features and faces on people who look radically different can look similar when viewed from certain angles. Because of this, most museum staff, knowledgeable researchers and collectors require provenance or a documented history for an image to support physical similarities that might exist. Experts will rarely offer even a tentative identification of new or unique images of famous people based solely on similarities shared with other known images." So you have a tough road ahead to establish the identities of the people in these images.
- Both you and Jack DeMattos are relatively new to WP, and as someone who's lurked around here for a while, I'm glad you're both contributing. As of right now, you're pretty much locked into a "he said - she said" kind of disagreement over these images. You claim they are authentic. Some of them appear authentic to me, frankly. Other editors insist they cannot be authentic and have summarily deleted them from articles that you've added them to.
- If you sincerely desire to settle the legitimacy of all of the images you've added, then I suggest you start a discussion on the Request for Comment board. But you might consider waiting longer for the third-party coverage from Discovery, National Geographic, et. al. that you say will be featuring these images to come forth. These may add currency to your statements that these photos are of the individuals you state. — btphelps (talk to me) (what I've done) 08:14, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
Is Starpulse a reliable source?
According to its "About" page [29], it has a full-time editorial staff and is a professional organization. But so is the National Enquirer. Is Starpulse a tabloid site, or do we consider a biography such as this one a reliable source? --Tenebrae (talk) 00:36, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
- The more tabloid-ish a source seems, the less reliable I would consider it. Still, they could sometimes be useful, as long editors adhere to WP:BLPGOSSIP. Looking through the RSN archives, the site seems to have a poor history, including republishing content from Wikipedia as a "review". However, according to what I see in better sources, such as Boston.com and The Commercial Appeal, nothing in that bio seems blatantly wrong. I would replace citations to Starpulse with these sources, however. I imagine that even if Starpulse cleaned up their act, we can still do better than to cite them. Maybe it's OK for trivial stuff in interviews. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 02:05, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks; I was thinking along those lines and you makes a very articulate case. At the very least, any Starpulse cite should be accompanied by a [better source needed] tag. --Tenebrae (talk) 17:34, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
Living people talk page
Should every substantial redirect from living person[*] have a talk page with WPBIO banner and living=yes? If so, is it something we encourage or consider urgent or required? On the other hand, is it adequate that the redirect is in Category:Living people? I have created many such redirects and improved a much greater number but I have not created talk pages. From my watchlist I think I have learned that some other editors occasionally add talk pages with WPBIO living=yes.
[*] A substantial redirect represents its entity at English Wikipedia. If its entity is a person, generally it will be under Category:Redirects from people; perhaps it should be there without exception. It is not an alternative name or alternative version of a name. Redirects to joint biographies contains substantial redirects only. Category:Redirects from pseudonyms should not contain any substantial redirects.

Help with Hansjörg Wyss?
Hi all. Back in October, I worked with another editor on changes to the Synthes USA section of the Hansjörg Wyss article based on a new draft I wrote. My draft reduced information about an indictment Wyss' company was involved in (here's what the article originally said). I detail my reasoning for removing that material here, but my main argument was that it didn't belong because Wyss was not named in the indictment and was never charged with wrongdoing. The editor who initially reviewed agreed.
Here's a quick summary of what followed:
- An editor who had not been involved in the Talk page discussion, reverted some of the changes and added in more information about the indictment
- I engaged the editor on the Talk page and we agreed to continue to work on the language, but the conversation stalled
- I then went through the Third Opinion process and an editor concluded that the text shouldn't be so detailed. However, they declined to make any edits
Since then, I have had difficulty finding anyone to help make the changes. I will not make them myself because I have a financial conflict of interest and I am working on the article on behalf of The Wyss Foundation. Would anyone here be interested in taking a look and making edits as they see fit? Thanks! Heatherer (talk) 21:30, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

Proposal for new article: Jack Nicholls (sports commentator)
Jack Nicholls currently commentates for the BBC's radio coverage of the Formula 1 World Championship. I've never made a new article so I'm not sure if I have enough reliable third-party sources to warrant notability and accuracy. He describes himself as:
Sports commentator. My main expertise lie in motorsport, covering F1 for BBC Radio 5 live, and the brand new FIA Formula E Championship on ITV and Fox Sports. I also commentate on football for BBC Radio and TalkSport, as well as both summer and winter Olympics for the Olympic Broadcasting Services.
Searching for "Jack Nicholls F1" on Google brings up quite a lot of information about him, but nothing from any major website apart from the ones he is employed by. Is a new article warranted? Khairul Islam 14:19, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- I did some similar searches and came up with similar results. It seems to me you are correct, that there aren't quite enough independent sources to support an article for him yet. 1bandsaw (talk) 17:28, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

Sourcing for claims of longevity
There's an ongoing RFC at Talk:List_of_oldest_living_people#RfC:_How_should_we_word_the_lede.3F regarding the criteria for longevity "claims" (basically their alleged birth and death dates). This has fallen into arguments over what sourcing is required for such things as the birthdates of people who are allegedly age 110 and above, see Talk:Zhou Youguang for an argument that it was fine when he was age 109 but since he turned 110, we require higher sources. Has there been any discussion about an increase in the quality of sources required for a birth date when the person turns age 110 as opposed to before that? Has there ever been any discussion about the sourcing required for birth and death dates at all? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 22:15, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Nalini Jaywant (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nalini_Jaywant)
While reading about the miracles of Shri Shirdi Sai Baba, I came across an artcle (http://bonjanrao.blogspot.in/2012/12/mrstarabai-sadasiv-tarkhad.html) wherein Nalini Jaywant's mother was stated to be a devotee of Shri Sai Baba.
The article describes that Nalini's mother took a vow to visit Shirdi if the serious illness of her daughter, Nalini who was just less than two years at that time, got cured. As the illness got immediately cured she visited Shirdi Sai Baba. As Shri Sai Baba took maha samadhi in the year 1915, how could it be that the birth year of Nalini is 1926!.
You may perhaps like to check it further.
Thanks,

Jesse Haynes
Can someone with Author/Book knowledge take a look at the Jesse Haynes page and determine if he is notable or not? It appears to me that he is not, but again, I am not an expert on Authors/Books. Also, if the page is determined to be notable, then it will probably require some cleanup; it reads like a promotion, in my opinion. Joeykai (talk) 23:04, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
- No, he doesn't look notable to me. He got a little bit of coverage in his local paper, but that's it. I prodded it. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 01:24, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
Can someone examine 'Imelda Marcos'? A multi-month editorial spree by a single-topic editor Imeldific (talk · contribs) has resulted in having two biographical infoboxes on this article, including one for royalty. This has also spilled over into the name article Imelda -- 70.51.200.135 (talk) 13:51, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- Also, was it correct for Imeldific to remove the WP0.5 banner on Talk:Imelda Marcos as there's a WP0.7 banner? (or do WP0.5 banners remain forever?) -- 70.51.200.135 (talk) 14:02, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- I fixed two obvious formatting issues. I briefly skimmed over the content changes. I'm not sure about all of them, but the article seems mostly OK. WikiProject Royalty can probably address issues related to royalty. I really don't know anything about how Wikipedia handles royalty. It's not anything that I've ever cared about. If there are neutrality or biographical issues in the article, I can help clean them up, though. As far as I can tell, this article was not include in Wikipedia 0.5. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 16:00, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- WPROYALTY deleted the royalty project banner. But should articles have two biographical infoboxes? -- 70.51.200.135 (talk) 04:49, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
- No, that's kind of weird. Normally, you'd turn one of the infoboxes into an embedded infobox, but I'm not sure what the guidelines are for when to include the royalty infobox. It might be unwarranted in this case, especially now that WP:ROYALTY removed their WikiProject. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 12:27, 28 January 2016 (UTC) edit: Looks like DrKay took care of it. List of external links, not yet used in the bio article
Hello all, I'm kind of terrible at explaining things sometimes so i'll start with an example. On the article for Leonardo DiCaprio, we have the sections for See also, References and External links. The References section is obviously a list of links actually used to build the article, and the See also, and External links sections are sparse as i think they should be. What i'm wondering is, is there a place that it would be appropriate to list possible references that are not yet used in the article. Similar to this list of articles on Leonardo DiCaprio's IMDB page. My thought is that it might help as a tool to build the articles, or to more quiclky repair them when links go dead. Also one person might enjoy/be good at digging around and finding articles to use as references, but be terrible at actually incorporating them into the article itself. Kevlar (talk) 21:25, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
- @Kevlar: There are three places: external links, further reading, and the article's talk page. Relevant guidelines include WP:EL and MOS:LAYOUT. You should keep in mind the policy WP:LINKFARM, which disallows long lists of links. If that's what you want, the talk page is the best place to do it. - See Template_talk:Infobox_person#RfC:_Should_resting_place_include_cremation, about whether "resting place" should include "cremation". Why hello! Might someone please look at Soufiane Choubani, an article on a Moroccan professor and founder of the Moroccan national debate team, and evaluate for notability? I get the sense that this is a bit of a vanity article, especially with these IP edits from Morocco, but if the guy's notable, he's notable. Thanks! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:07, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
- There's a little coverage at Morocco World News. I'm unfamiliar with that site, but it's got an editorial board. There are other potential sources at List of newspapers in Morocco, but I didn't find anything after searching through them. I agree this looks like a vanity article, but it's tough to ascertain notability for unfamiliar topics, especially when the sources might be non-English. I'd say he's likely not notable, but I don't even know how to search the Arabic-language sources. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 19:04, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
Style guidelines or community consensus about lists of publications?
Note: I'm reposting this comment from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography/Science and academia, having had no discussion for a year, in hopes of gaining clarity.
It is not uncommon for science and academia biographies to have a selection of publications at the end, usually titled "Selected works" or "Bibliography". It is (thankfully) less frequent that an article has an exhaustive list of publications, ranging from books to conference abstracts, which seem copied from a Curriculum Vitae or database (example). How many works should be included seems largely left up to respective editors, but I feel it's prudent to bring up the question of how should these lists be implemented, and how exhaustive (or not) they should be. Publishing papers is not inherently noteworthy for academics, and exhaustive lists may be considered indiscriminate info, promotional, or an attempt to appear to satisfy WP:SCHOLAR without actually gathering the explicit secondary sources establishing notability. Here are some possible guidelines to consider:
- Only list publications that have been explicitly featured by independent, reliable sources.
- Only list books/monographs published. Defer the listing of papers/conference proceedings, etc. to an External link.
- Be as comprehensive as you wish. List away!
- Include literature of any size in a {{collapsible list}} list, which might make articles more concise and readable while still directing interested readers towards primary literature. (see for instance William Keeton#Bibliography of orientation publications)
- Leave questions of inclusions to the editor(s) involved in their respective articles, no attempt at guidelines or rules-of-thumb.
Note I'm not necessarily advocating any of the above, but I'm interested in opinions, and/or links to former discussions on this topic. Cheers, --Animalparty! (talk) 21:57, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
- I would be worried about requiring a third-party citation. Those can be very difficult to find, and it would be frustrating if people went around removing works published by the Oxford University Press simply because the bibliography was unsourced. It's a best practice that we could encourage, but I don't think it should be required. I don't like the idea of exhaustively listing everything an academic has ever done, but it's not easy to find the appropriate level of detail. Maybe more than just books/monographs, but I guess that could work. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 23:23, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
- There are plenty of ways to publish papers in conferences and journals which have widely varying standards for acceptance, so listing all published papers is somewhat meaningless, in my opinion. In keeping with WP:SCHOLAR criterion 1, I would think that only those works which have "made significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources" should be listed on a person's page (your suggestion 1). In my opinion, that should mean those publications are cited very broadly, or are so key that they get called out in biographies of the individual or any significant text on the field (such as Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica). There are plenty of other places one can search to find published works of a scholar if one is that interested. However, something like you're suggesting is a guideline which I don't think currently exists, and would need some kind of broader RFC conducted before it could be put in place. 1bandsaw (talk) 23:26, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
- I don't think it would be possible to have a one-size-fits-all approach, since so much depends on the subject of the biography. Sticking with science, for someone like Stephen Jay Gould or Brian Cox who's notable both as a scientific specialist and as a populariser, their general-market works are vanishingly unlikely to satisfy "made significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources", but are likely to be their best-known works and it would be perverse to omit them. I agree that papers (as opposed to books) should only be listed if third-party sources can be shown to consider them significant. ‑ Iridescent 23:54, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
