Grammar Problem

Dear members of wikiproject Hong Kong, i hereby like to put this notice for that almost all the articles of Hong Kong related, or about Hong Kong have really poor grammars. Any users, who have a high degree in grammar are free to improve the articles, an join the wikiproject thank you.

To be honest, you appear to have made quite a lot of grammatical mistakes in your comment. I'm not saying a hasty comment is an accurate reflection of your language skills, but next time, you may want to step back before denouncing the language skills of fellow HK Wikipedians (no offence). Kayau (talk · contribs) 15:32, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
I do not see how your message improves the overall grammar standards of the articles. Nonetheless, I believe users who do not possess high standards of language skills can also provide the project with valuable information and knowledge, and should not be discouraged to contribute to this Wikiproject or Wikipedia. --Wylve (talk) 15:41, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Recent edits in MTR station pages by anonymous users

Hi all, I noticed a list of IP users who have been modifying some MTR station pages within this week, possibly as a response to the Our Future Railway public consultation schemes. However, it appears to me that these users are pushing some unrealised MTR plans as the current status, and in my opinion are presenting wrong and misleading information.

For example, in this version of Admiralty Station (MTR) one replaced the current neighbouring station box with the future one, which will only happen incrementally between 2014-2020. In this version of Tsing Yi Station one replaced a neighbouring station of the Airport Express with Tuen Mun, which is not even in any plans.

Here I could not comment on the intentions of these users, or whether these users are actually one. Yet I would still like to raise your attentions to these matters and see if anything can be done to prevent these incorrect modifications.

Economics of Hong Kong

We seem to be missing an article on the economic history of Hong Kong, as the economy of Hong Kong article doesn't cover it, and it would seem to be important enough to be separate from the history of Hong Kong -- 65.92.180.137 (talk) 14:24, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Help with an article?

I'm going around to a few places asking for help with the article Airplane olive. I was able to find some stuff that claims that it's a popular snack (meaning that it could have sources) in Hong Kong, but I can't find much in English. Can any of you that are fluent in Chinese find sources? I'm kind of at a loss here and I'd hate to delete this without at least giving it the good old Wikipedia try to get some help finding coverage in reliable sources. According to the Hong Kong article, the demonym for Hong Kong is "Hong Konger." Should Category:Hong Kong people, etc., be renamed? --BDD (talk) 21:04, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Pretty uncommon for me to hear the words "Hong Konger" here in Hong Kong, and a Google search returns more results from "Hong Kong people" than any of "Hongkonger", "Hong Konger", "Hongkongese" or "Hong Kongese". (Sorted in descending number of results; actually the result counts from "Hong Kong people" is more than the sum of that from the 4) Therefore I don't think the change is appropriate. — Peterwhy 09:00, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:09, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Junior Writers Awards

Greetings WikiProject, the article on Junior Writers Awards falls within your scope. It's a writing competition for secondary students in Hong Kong and Macao. I could use some extra eyes over there, as some contributors seem interested in turning the article into a promo piece for the event. It's not an epidemic or anything, but extra eyes would be helpful, even if you just add the page to your watchlists and scrutinize the changes. There is also no indication in the article that the event is notable, so helping to establish notability would be appreciated as well. Thank you! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:18, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Promotional articles

I don't know if you guys have been checking the Deletion noticeboard lately (or this page, for that matter), but there seems to be a lot of companies putting out unusually detailed promotional articles recently (see Tsui Wah Restaurant for an example of the format, though the topic is notable in this case; and the probably-gonna-be-deleted Hulu Concept). All of them are suspiciously created by single-purpose accounts. I suspect a paid-editing PR firm could be behind the batch of Hong Kong company articles (ala Wiki-PR). Does anyone else notice something strange going on, or is it just me? _dk (talk) 04:04, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

Tsui Wah Restaurant ‎was created by Danielho722. It was the only page ever edited by that user and {s)he has been inactive since December 2012. Huku Concept was created by 2008255766yu09; user has been inactive since March 2010 and that was the only page {s}he ever edited. Undoubtedly those two were single purpose accountss but they've been dormant for some time. I don't see that there is an issue here but I'll certainly keep an eye out for further suspicious behavior.  Philg88 talk 05:40, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
What gets me suspicious is the abundant use of single purpose accounts making really lengthy and detailed (but heavily promotional) articles about Hong Kong small-to-mid sized companies and businessmen. Maybe I'm seeing a pattern where none exists, I don't know, but it's pretty hard to check with so many being already deleted. I'll scour the relevant categories for more examples when I have time. _dk (talk) 06:05, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
Cool, let me know what you find. As an aside, Hulu Concept will hopefully now be kept (see the AfD discussion).  Philg88 talk 06:39, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet For Wikiproject Hong Kong At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

The correct pinyin orthography is Wen Rui'an, and since pinyin is the official romanisation system in HK (because it's part of China), then I guess that's the official version. I don't know about Malaysia though, I don't think they have a mandated romanisation system.  Philg88 talk 05:42, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Roads and streets in Hong Kong

A large number of roads and streets in Hong Kong are currently under discussion at Articles for Deletion. While some of these are notable, others are not and will be deleted or redirected per Wikipedia notability policy. In some cases, information about these roads is available from acceptable sources but at the current time there is no provision to retain this in the case of redirects to List of streets and roads in Hong Kong. I propose that we restructure that article along the lines of List of streets and roads in Manchester, but divided into districts. This will allow for the retention of photos and with an additional "notes" column, pertinent information such as "named after x", the "only x in y" etc. can be added as well as other columns after discussion. If a particular section gets too long the article can be split. All thoughts and suggestions - particular those on what the column headings should be - welcome .  Philg88 talk 14:49, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

As it is easier to have an example to discuss, I have created a table for the roads of Lantau, directly in the List of streets and roads in Hong Kong article. Feel free to comment and/or make changes. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 17:02, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, I've commented at your talk page.  Philg88 talk 21:48, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Help with an article?

I need some help with the article Umbrella Man (Occupy Central Movement, Hong Kong). It's about a specific photograph that is related to the OCM and it needs some serious TLC. It was up for a speedy (which I've declined) but I'm thinking that a merge to the main OCM article would be best due to the limited amount of coverage that I could find. However, I did want to ask around to various WikiProjects to see if they could help out some when it comes to finding foreign language sources or sources I may have missed. Anyone interested? Article alerts

For those who are unfamiliar with this WikiProject, we always had a page to keep tracks of ongoing events:

Wikipedia:WikiProject Hong Kong/Article alerts

TheAvatar (discuss?) 20:52, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

One should note that that does not track all events related to pages concerning WPHK. It only tracks events which have a WPHK project banner attached or appear in the tracking category tree. Any page without a project banner (or outside the tree) would thus not be listed. Also, that does not track all action requests, only requested actions that are part of the repetoire of tracked actions for Article Alerts (for instance WP:CSD deletions are not tracked; and though WP:RM standard requests are tracked, WP:RMTR are not) The list is maintained by an automated process, so it is important to add the WPHK banner to every talkpage of any page that WPHK wishes to track from the processes which ArticleAlerts tracks. For those processes that it does not, one should be aware they will not be listed there; and there are many such untracked processes. -- 67.70.35.44 (talk) 00:21, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Help with a draft article

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you would be willing to help work on a draft at AfC, Draft:2015 Hong Kong protests. When I'd come across the draft it'd only had a handful of sources and covered about 2 protests, both of which had a pretty low attendance in contrast to what was expected. I was (and still am) worried that if I'd accepted it to the mainspace it'd likely be merged into the articles for the Umbrella Movement or the 2014 protests. There's been a third protest that's been better attended, but I'm still somewhat worried that it'd just get nominated for AfD or be merge/redirected, which would make it harder for it to be accepted later on. Anyone willing to help flesh out the article and add more sources? I do think that as the year progresses there will be more coverage and it'll warrant more coverage later on, but I'm just worried that it might be considered to be too soon since in its current state this article could probably be summed up in a paragraph here. I'd posted this at the talk pages of both of the above pages, but I wanted to post this here just to make sure that it gets enough eyes and potential help coming in. The third protest is part of the annual July 1 marches and would be better covered there. As one of the people who motioned to delete the last 2015 Hong Kong protests article, I oppose making the draft pass. _dk (talk) 05:02, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

Picture of a postal box needed for commons:Category:Post of Hong Kong

As described in [2] and a number of other articles, Hong Kong post may remove the royal insignia from the green boxes. I thought we would have a good collection of the boxes already, but I cannot find a single one in the Commons. Can someone take a picture of at least one, before it is covered up? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:47, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

Update: false alarm, we do have some hidden in the commons:Category:Colonial-era post boxes in Hong Kong category, few levels down. But still, a number is missing, so if anyone lives near some that are not yet photographed, that's an opportunity. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:50, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

Controversial edits

User:Abdefgh is currently mass editing HK related articles. In several cases, like Kwun Tong District (see infobox), Hong Kong ends up being portrayed as a "country". This is not a new behavior on Wikipedia and the purpose of this newly registered user account might be to push an agenda, or attract attention, or generate a heated debate, or just to create a mess and enjoy the firework of reactions. I do not have time to handle the matter now, but if someone who has seen this before could post something on the user's talk page, that would be useful. By experience and without judgement at this stage, next steps could be a revert of all the user's edits and eventually, possibly a user block. Olivier (talk) 13:18, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

@Olivier: I just read your post. I was reverting some of them but I found some cases not entirely straightforward. For example, in list of the world's busiest airports by cargo traffic, it is of course a must to write "Hong Kong, China". However, regarding the flagicon, there is a degree of sense, as in some of the other articles (of which some have been reverted). I will skip these for the moment, but I will also need some help as there are quite a lot of articles that need to be fixed. Perhaps you could help get the attention of more editors. Thank you. The Average Wikipedian (talk) 13:48, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
There are about 11,000 articles assessed under WPHK and most of these simply refer to the city as "Hong Kong" for brevity and per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names), just as many articles on London subjects (i.e. Battersea Power Station) do not explicitly spell out that London is in England. Anyway, I would suggest User:Abdefgh cease his/her controversial editing but I don't think the naming convention of simply "Central, Hong Kong" implies Hong Kong is a country. Citobun (talk) 15:51, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
I've reverted any mention of Hong Kong as a "country" or "Hongkongese" as an "ethnicity". But I agree it is usually unnecessary to affix ", China" anytime Hong Kong is mentioned in a Wikipedia article; those edits I have left alone. Cobblet (talk) 07:03, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
The user's at it again. I started a discussion on user talk. Cobblet (talk) 10:38, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
@Cobblet: Oh boy now he's even been editing Normandy (French region) claiming that there is an independence movement without citing sources. He seems quite obsessed with making regions lose sovereignty despite your discussion. The Average Wikipedian (talk) 13:49, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
I have warned the user on his/her talk page. Next time will trigger a block. Olivier (talk) 09:29, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

Street article titles

I've been editing some articles on some streets in Hong Kong, and I discovered some differences between article titles. Some articles, like Amoy Street (Hong Kong), have parentheses to disambiguate locations. There are also some, like Jordan Road, Hong Kong, have commas to disambiguate. I want to ask the project how titles of streets should be title, since it is inconsistent with WP:PLACEDAB. This discussion could be a precedent for how street article titles (especially within Hong Kong) should be treated.—CycloneIsaac (Talk) 05:28, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Here's a good list of roads in Hong Kong with different styles in naming conventions.—CycloneIsaac (Talk) 05:30, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
For reference, Canada-related articles (of which I am most familiar) generally follow the Road (City) format. Examples include Queens Quay (Toronto), Front Street (Toronto), King Street (Toronto). I am sure that some would be able to be found that don't follow this format, however they would be few and far between, and would typically be moved to this format without much fanfare. --kelapstick(bainuu) 05:33, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
I prefer the Road, City format but it really depends on the editor him/herself. Standardizing them seems to me a good idea, it can certainly make this project a little more organized. However, we and others editing Hong Kong Roads should agree upon the naming convention to use. Wishds (talk) 05:55, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
@Wishds: It don't think it should be the editor's choice. Since most pages in HKRD are tied to WPHK, it sounds better to put the main discussion here instead. Also, I found out that most streets in the UK have the same issues as us with the title.—CycloneIsaac (Talk) 05:54, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
@CycloneIsaac: Why not designate one particular format for Hong Kong roads (eg Road (City)) and not to bother much about other WikiProjects, because of course we alone couldn't have such sufficient time and energy to standardize those from other parts of the world. Why not we discuss upon the format right now? Which do you prefer?
@Wishva de Silva: I prefer x Road (City), but we could always get more input from here.—CycloneIsaac (Talk) 03:47, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

Medalist?

I was wondering which way HK English spells this word, "medalist" (1-L) or "medallist" (2-L's) ; I noticed that Category:Olympic medalists for Hong Kong uses one, while Category:Olympic medallists for Great Britain uses two. -- 65.94.171.217 (talk) 23:09, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

Dean Harrington

Has anybody here heard of an actor named Dean Harrington and if so what name he might be called in Chinese? Apparently he was an American expat who was an actor and voice dub in Hong Kong during the golden age. Later he went to Japan, where he currently resides, and did a lot of video game voice work. Anyways if you want to save or delete the article see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dean Harrington.--Prisencolin (talk) 03:15, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
