Looking for more sources

I created Floy Little Bartlett and I am surprised at how little I could find since the score of one of her songs was in a famous film. I'm looking for help to find more things about her, her music, and her book. Thanks in advance. SL93 (talk) 20:03, 5 July 2019 (UTC)

@SL93: I'll dig for some more info. I'll post the links on the talk page of her article. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 20:44, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
One thing I find helps is to check the Library of Congress, or other large collections. That way you get some idea of what exists. Remember to use both maiden and married names in the searches and (sadly enough) "Mrs. Husband Name". After that, one can move to things like obituaries in her local papers, and so on. I appreciate the help from you two. Megalibrarygirl, thanks for the source help on the talk page. SL93 (talk) 20:55, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
I'm kind of impressed at how poor sources are from her. Mind, she does kind of fall into the worst period for this. Right in the middle of a sheet music boom, used in silent films, so there's no recordings of the usage, and, judging by the titles, falling into a sentimental mood, which seems to have not really been what people kept from the 1910s. Plus, a lot of her works came out a bit before WWI, so, plenty of chaos to lose them in. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.8% of all FPs 21:09, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
I have come into source problems quite a bit with women composers and it's a shame. I own a copy of International Encyclopedia of Women Composers and it lists so many composers that I feel should be notable, but I just can't find enough coverage where I can feel it would survive an AfD. SL93 (talk) 21:17, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
Adam Cuerden, SL93: I'm interested in covering women composers, especially those from continental Europe, and am familiar with several sources which don't usually show up in Google searches in English. If you could give the names of a few of those you have been investigating, I may be able to create articles likely to survive. As for those from Britain and North America, I think there's enough expertise among the English speakers to check them out.--Ipigott (talk) 06:13, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
Ipigott, I'm away from my stuff until sometime tomorrow, but I can list some here when I get back home. SL93 (talk) 16:39, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
Ipigott, I could only locate two of the names I was researching, but they are Gertrud Maria Mell (Sweden) and Jelena Milenković Živković (Yugoslavia). Sources right now for Mell - an entry in my encyclopedia and this. Sources right now for Milenković Živković - my encyclopedia and this. SL93 (talk) 20:55, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
SL93: Thanks for these. Mell is included here in the Swedish lexicon Vem är hon and briefly in a number of other Swedish sources. I see she died on 30 June 2016. I'll write a short article about her in the next day or two. You can then perhaps add any additional information from your encyclopedia.--Ipigott (talk) 09:19, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Faces of Progress.

A little initiative I set myself, and, while I don't necessarily think everyone has to be female for it, I'd like quite a few to be. (Though Civil Rights activists and the like are also highly viable contenders, although I'd prefer to not have too many straight white men; people will find straight white men to hold up without my help). It's listed at User:Adam_Cuerden#Faces_of_Progress, and I could use suggestions for the remaining (sigh) 41 states. Would like to finish this before the person who inspired it leaves office. I don't actually want to ask you to do another photo until the Inter-Allied Women's Conference one is done, but I am rationalizing this as I am not asking you, rather you asked. Wilma Mankiller would be awesome for Oklahoma, though I am not sure any of the images we have are PD and I couldn't find any working on her article. Possibly instead then Kate Barnard? What a terrific project! Browsing {{United States Women's Halls of Fame}}, I found the following women who may be good candidates:
Do any of those fit the bill? nonmodernist (talk) 19:11, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
I think I'm going to have to reject Felton. Though she has good points, "a white supremacist and slave owner; and one of the few prominent women who spoke in favor of lynching" is maybe not the best example. As for the others, since this is my project, a.k.a. me trying to find images to do restoration on, it's going to be down to the availability of images in need of that. That said, I'm definitely nominating Dauenhauer for FP. That's a great image. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.8% of all FPs 20:27, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
Belatedly here to say yikes @ myself re: Felton... I went by images without reading the actual articles, which was clearly not the best strategy. Lesson learned! nonmodernist (talk) 00:17, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

The nice thing about a memoir is that they're usually out there. I found this: http://www.eldreds.com/auctions/detail/item/256188/sale/933/dept/1 which has a fairly high-res scan of the title page and frontispiece. A little cleanup, and there we go! I'll just leave this link here, Mims Butterworth, along with some references. [1][2][3][4] To research this I recommend searching newspaper archives. Much of her public activity was in the pre-Internet era. Jehochman Talk 16:40, 21 July 2019 (UTC)

Thanks Jehochman, after a brief scan of your links, her life was definitely fascinating. I'm hip-deep in writing another article, but if someone doesn't tackle it before I can get to it, I'll be glad to give it a go.SusunW (talk) 19:37, 21 July 2019 (UTC)

Here's what I came up with. Her common name appears to be Miriam Butterworth (and that is the name of the art gallery named after her at Hartford College).1982 is the first mention I find of it. There are tons of articles about her, but these should be sufficient to write a comprehensive biography.1971; 1979; 1981; 1981; 1984; 1985; 1997; [5] and 2002; [6] and 2008 SusunW (talk) 05:59, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

Linda T. Metcalf

Can anybody help me out here? I deleted this biography (and an associated article on Proprioceptive Writing) per WP:G11, but I think it's possible to write a reasonable encyclopedia article out of it (and I'm happy to put the deleted articles in userspace if it would be helpful). I've made a one sentence stub at Draft:Linda Metcalf confirming her university post (and hence a presumed WP:PROF) but I'm not sure what to do next. If anyone can help, that would be great. Anna Whitehead Bodeker—help with finding photo?

I'm planning to move an article on Anna Whitehead Bodeker to the main space this weekend—she led the first attempt to organize for women's suffrage in Virginia *and* helped found the Virginia State Woman Suffrage Association, the first association of its kind in the state. I would love help finding a photo of her to include. She lived between 1826 and 1904 in Richmond, Virginia. Any help you can give would be so appreciated.ScoutHarris (talk) 14:34, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

ScoutHarris Once again am surprised at how hard Richmond is. Nothing that I could find in newspapers.com, newspaperarchive.com, hathitrust, archive.org or the Library of Congress. Found a picture of her husband, but don't know when it was first published or who took it.[7] There is an article about her in Virginia Cavalcade Volume 43, Number 4, Spring 1994, p 166-. Don't know if you have access to check it, but our resident librarian Megalibrarygirl might be able to find the copy located at UT-El Paso. If there is a photo in that article, you will probably have to upload it as fair use (deceased person), i.e. not to commons to en.WP, unless there is a clear indication of when the photo was first published. SusunW (talk) 17:29, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
I also looked in various places, but wasn't able to find anything online. The fact that the Library of Virginia and this video only show her house suggests that there may not be an accessible published portrait. Nick Number (talk) 17:33, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
Yes, the only thing I’ve been able to find is that image of her home, but it’s part of the collection at the Virginia Historical Society. Thanks for trying!ScoutHarris (talk) 17:44, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

My dissertation was on 19c. Southern white women, and it really wasn't unusual for even a fairly wealthy woman to never have a portrait made or a photograph taken. She might just be one of those. But a picture of her house or her signature, a historical marker or a tombstone, might still be possible.Penny Richards (talk) 18:31, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
@Penny Richards: I’m definitely finding that to be the case! She’s buried at a cemetery here in Richmond, so it might be worth heading over and taking a photo of her tombstone myself. ScoutHarris (talk) 18:41, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
  • Coming in a little late, but hopefully you can find a picture. Something to keep in mind is that it's entirely possible that the LVA may have a picture of her but it hasn't been scanned yet. When I was volunteering for them I was able to see how backlogged they were with digitizing their offerings, so a lot of the stuff gets digitized based on user demand. If there is one you can request it get scanned - they're really good about that. If there's not one it could be a result of the portrait getting lost over time or the family not making it accessible. Families can get a little protective. This book is a great example of that - the family kept the letters private for years because the letters were part of a fairly juicy scandal. Long story short, Sally McDowell divorced her abusive husband (the governor of Maryland) and was expecting to live the rest of her life alone because of the stigma of divorce in those days, only for a local preacher to fall in love with her and ask to marry her. She kept refusing because she was afraid of ruining his career and some of her family members were against the marriage. (She was also from a fairly distinguished family.) Pretty scandalous stuff for the time period, but mundane by ours, but the family kept the letters private for a surprising amount of time. Anywho, couldn't help but recommend that book - it's pretty fascinating. ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 14:04, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

Criminals?

Have we ever focussed on criminals? Are you're getting a bit jaded of researching and writing about the great and the good? Sugar and spice and all things nice makes for a rather unhealthy and boring diet. Step over to the dark side, cover the notorious and the evil for a change. Yes, we've done villains and prisoners and spies (not all of them necessarily "baddies", of course). But I hardly ever write about nice, sweet people. I write about women in all their complexity and contexts. Some of them did good things, and might even be admirable in some ways, but I agree with you that a person definitely doesn't have to be nice or good to be notable. Doris Fuchs (scientist)

There is a BLP of a German woman scientist, Doris Fuchs (scientist) that was marked for speedy deletion. While the article definitely needs work, and citations, I google-scholared her and noticed she has an h-index of 24, as seen here. (And a Citation score of 3253.) I'm not very familiar with the h-index system, and all that it implies, however, Hirsch cites that an H=20 is a "successful scientist". I am wanting to learn more about this evaluation index, and so I am pinging Xanthippe (since they have quoted from it on occasion) and am sending a call out to other WIR participants for their input. I am thinking I may be able save this article on a woman scientist if she is indeed notable, and if I try to improve the article. Also, I don't have any experience contesting a speedy deletion, and if there is anything I should know, I'd appreciate it. It does not seem like there is the same sort of discussion as there is in AfD. Thanks in advance! Netherzone (talk) 15:50, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

If it went to AfD it would be a definite keep based on GS citations. I recall the Donna Strickland affair. I don't know how to deal with speedy deletions. I note that the nominator has been on a deletion spree: I have not looked at the others. Xxanthippe (talk) 05:26, 27 July 2019 (UTC).

Del Martin

Del Martin should be removed from the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Missing_articles_by_occupation/Journalists because she is listed in a joint article with her spouse at Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 06:25, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

BeenAroundAWhile: This list is compiled automatically from Wikidata. Not only is there a separate entry for her there but if you click on Q445893, you will see she has biographies in four other languages, including lengthy coverage in German. The Wikidata entry correctly identifies her as "part of" Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon. Although the article Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon seems well developed, there may be a case for writing a separate biography of her in English too. There could possibly also be an article on Phyllis Lyon. I suppose it all depends on how much additional detail can be included about their separate achievements rather than on their joint relationship.--Ipigott (talk) 09:27, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

If you would like an article you created to be featured on the Main Page, please be sure it appears on the articles on days in the year (like August 1, August 2, etc.). For example, if I create an article on Frida Kahlo, I would ensure she appears on July 6 (birth), July 13 (death), and November 1 (date of first solo exhibition). This ensures that the articles gets at least three chances to be selected for this section, because articles on days of the year is what we use to select articles to feature for "On this day" section of the Main Page. I favor GA's and FA's but really any article would be acceptable as long as it is well sourced. I have been making an effort to include more women. It would be very help to remind everyone to include links to new articles on a few relevant days of the year articles. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 00:34, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

Here is an example. The new article Alice Elizabeth Anderson should have a link from both June 8 and September 17. For more prominent historical figures, you can select one more major event in their life and write a blurb to add to the relevant day's article. If this is done, they would have a chance to be featured next year and perhaps once every few years forever. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 00:44, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the reminder, Coffeeandcrumbs. Indeed, let's remember to link "Anniversaries". BTW, we've been talking about facilitating a Linkage+Findability event but haven't firmed it up; need someone to take the lead in developing it. --Rosiestep (talk) 06:15, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

WHGI

Does anyone know when WHGI will be updating? It's currently a week behind, while Denelezh has the overall percent at 17.904% as of 22 July. Almost at 18% :D --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 18:37, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

WHGI is usually updated on Monday, with the data from the previous week (as Wikidata dumps are usually available on Tuesday). Max can probably help if there is a problem. About Denelezh, it will not be updated next week for technical reason (it will be the following weeks). — Envlh (talk) 20:50, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
@Envlh: what day do you normally start parsing the Wikidata dumps then, on Tuesday or Wednesday? I haven't changed the update schedule of WHGI since 2014, so Wikidata schedules have probably changed. @MrLinkinPark333: @Ipigott: do you want me to change the day of week of the update? Maximilianklein (talk) 22:23, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
WHGI didn't update last week, fwiw. I think that's the main puzzle. --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:40, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
Maximilianklein: I had been used to seeing WHGI updates every Monday morning European time but recently they seem to have come later on Monday or even on Tuesday. To me, it doesn't much matter which day they come although I think several of our participants appreciate weekly updates. Perhaps you could look into why it didn't run last week and make sure we have something to report by this time tomorrow. Thanks for all your efforts and for extending coverage to include Wales and many other language versions.--Ipigott (talk) 06:00, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
@Maximilianklein: Denelezh is updated manually, for two reasons:
  • I never had the time to finish the automation;
  • while Wikidata dumps are often available on Tuesday, it's not always the case (for instance, the "holes" in June and July are due to a lot of problems in dumps generation lately, all available dumps were imported into Denelezh). I basically check this page on Tuesday evening or Wednesday, and then manually start the import (that is then completely automatic).
As the dump can be generated on various days of the week, Denelezh displays the date of the dump, and does not try to provide week-to-week changes on a fixed day (the graph of evolution normalizes the changes between two dumps to 7 days, that the dumps were generated 3 or 10 days apart). — Envlh (talk) 11:35, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

This is another lady who is notable and needs an article. Pamela J Hawthorn wrote a seminal report in 1974 in the UK called Nurse, I want my mummy! [Hawthorn, Pamela J. (1974). Nurse-I want my Mummy!, Series 1, Number 3 (pdf) (Report). The Study of Nursing Care Research Project, Royal College of Nursing and National Council of Nurses in the United Kingdom. {{cite report}}: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |1= (help)], that redefined pediatric nursing.[9] The report started to change UK and eventually worldwide attitudes and practices of not allowing parents to spend time with their ill children. She is referenced in the Platt Report 1959 article. scope_creepTalk 12:19, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

RonBot #11 now GaloBot 4

As I noted above, I requested a clone of RonBot #11, which has not run for over 3 months. Galobtter responded to my request, and has rewritten the bot and requested approval to run it at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Galobot 4. The bot was approved for trial (1 full run) on 24 July, so hopefully we will soon have declined drafts of biographies of women being regularly updated again, as GaloBot 4. Many thanks, Galobtter! RebeccaGreen (talk) 02:23, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

RebeccaGreen, you and others can see the output of the trial at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Drafts. If there are any issues with the output, let me know. Galobtter (pingó mió) 03:12, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

@Nick Number: Another for you, if you like: I just moved Paloma Villegas into mainspace. She meets the notability standard; the declension was a matter of following the reference guidelines. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:01, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
@Ser Amantio di Nicolao: It looks like that one is already almost identical to its Spanish counterpart. It doubtless could be expanded, but at the moment I'm prioritizing translations where the original articles are fairly detailed and have good sourcing. Nick Number (talk) 19:16, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
@Nick Number: Not to hijack this thread, but if you're looking for Spanish articles to translate, there are quite a few on my redlink list and there's plenty more in the same cats on es-wiki. Bonus: next month is Indigenous WIR. And please feel free to add to the list! -Yupik (talk) 07:08, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
@Yupik: Thank you, but I think I'm good for now. My Translations To Do bookmarks folder has...225 entries right now. I also tend to sift the Wikidata redlink lists for the monthly themes. It will be a long while before I'm out of material. Nick Number (talk) 19:15, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
I hear you; that's why I started that list :D -Yupik (talk) 20:34, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

@Ser Amantio di Nicolao: Go for it. You may want to switch to kvetching, depending on the demographics. Nick Number (talk) 06:41, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
@Galobtter:, @Headbomb: thank you very much! I have very much enjoyed looking through the list of names. I notice that it does pick up a few male biographies (as did RonBot #11) - this is not a big deal, but I wondered whether it would help to refine it if we notify you of them? or should we just delete any we notice?
PS Could any further discussion of Spanish translations perhaps move to another thread? It's got a bit hard to see what is about the declined drafts bot here. RebeccaGreen (talk) 09:43, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
RebeccaGreen, you can give me a list of few of the male biographies (I did spot one while looking through it) and I'll let you know if I can refine it to not pick up those while not causing false negatives. Galobtter (pingó mió) 21:05, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

August's Indigenous Women event and the REDress Project

Buffy Sainte-Marie at Riddu Riđđu 2019

Would anyone be interested in writing an article about the REDress Project[10] and/or its creater Jaime Black for the August event on indigenous women? I'm not sure I could write an article about it that wouldn't get AfD'd right away. With luck, some of the photos I took at Riddu Riđđu of the Buffy Sainte-Marie-Tanya Tagaq-Maxida Märak concert will be sharp enough to be useable since the red dress was prominently displayed on stage then. Thanks! -Yupik (talk) 01:21, 21 July 2019 (UTC)

On a side note, we've uploaded some photos already and will be uploading more to this cat on Commons. -Yupik (talk) 01:38, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
That's really not bad. Don't think it'd pass at WP:FPC, but that's more down to quality-of-camera issues than anything you did. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.8% of all FPs 02:33, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
@Adam Cuerden: Thanks! Any and all recommendations and suggestions on where to start improving are greatly appreciated since I have no background in photography, particularly since I'm often in a position to take photos of subjects that we might not have photos for yet. Yupik (talk) 12:42, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Honestly, you're better asking Rhododendrites, who is a much better photographer than me. I'm more of a restorationist of older photos. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.8% of all FPs 18:46, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Adam. :) I'm far from a pro, but happy to share what I've learned in the course of trying to take good pictures for Commons. I think in general it's quite a good shot. I think the issue is less your equipment and more that concert photography is really challenging for anyone. It's usually dark, people are often moving, it can be hard to hold the camera still, and did I mention how it's usually dark and they're always moving? :) From a technical standpoint, the biggest problem here is probably the 1/40 shutter speed IMO. At that speed, you really need to have a pretty static subject, so it would be practically impossible to get this subject very sharp at that speed. Would be better to increase ISO and keep speed a bit faster. Higher ISO will introduce noise, but you can fix some of that in post-processing. If your lens allows it, you could also open the aperture more (use a lower number than f/5.6), which lets more light in, but makes for a narrower depth of field (so you'd need to be careful to ensure you're focusing on the subject and not, say, on the microphone or background). The red dress is indeed kind of distracting, but there's not much to be done about that. :) Just to clarify, this feedback is because of the above request for feedback. This is absolutely good enough/sharp enough to use in a Wikipedia article. Thanks for uploading it! — Rhododendrites talk \\ 19:05, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Aye. They're DEFINITELY good enough for articles, and a lot of other uses. This is more how to get to featured picture status. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.8% of all FPs 19:41, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
This is brilliant, thanks! The suggestions helped me figure out what I need to be looking at whereas before I was just lost as to what to do. I think I might go out practicing shooting in low light this week in general to figure that out first and then maybe I'll be ready for the next concert. -Yupik (talk) 22:24, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
Happy to try to write something on the project as I can see some obvious sources that meet the need for media coverage. I’m less sure about the BLP side of things. As ever, I’ll appreciate some help with the wikidata side of things and will bring it back here when I think it’s ready for livespace. Moira Paul (talk) 22:17, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Thank you so much! I should be able to help out with the Wikidata side if there's any problems. -
The project itself has plenty of coverage so that page should be straightforward. There's very little coverage of Jaime Black apart from in relation to the project, so any article is liable to be a stub. I'll prioritise the project as if that passes notability then a biog stub is more likely to survive. Moira Paul (talk) 10:38, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
Wonderful, thanks! -Yupik (talk) 21:30, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

As a heads up, the alerts will now report proposals for mergers and splits, as well as AFC submissions. There's a bit of a backlog, but now you have a way to track it!

Nadeschda Gernet

An article on the Russian mathematician Nadeschda Gernet was just recently moved from Draft to Main space. I had done a bit of smoothing-out just prior to that, but it could stand another round of scrutiny. In particular, I'm wondering if the degree listed as a "master's" was really a habilitation (it might have been translated incorrectly from a statement that used a false friend with the older "license to teach" meaning?). XOR'easter (talk) 13:35, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

XOR'easter: My Russian is pretty rusty but from this (see for example the Google translation) it looks as if she is remembered for being the second woman mathematician to obtain a degree from a Russian university, in this case a master's degree from Moscow University. Maybe she also gained fame for her doctorate in Göttingen but this needs to be substantiated. Someone needs to look into it all more carefully. There is a more extensive, nicely illustrated biography of Gernet here. To answer your query, the Russian certainly refers to a master's degree rather than to a teaching diploma.--Ipigott (talk) 08:39, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
I think I've taken care of some of the problems but the article could still be considerably expanded.--Ipigott (talk) 10:17, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

Biography about woman academic needs more watchers

Crystal Marie Fleming is a relatively new article about a woman academic that doesn't have a lot of watchers and probably could use some significant beefing up, because it's susceptible to additions that give undue weight to specific incidents when the rest of her academic/writing/commentary career isn't well documented. I have no opinion on the notability of the subject, I'd just like to get some more eyes on the article. Risker (talk) 01:44, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

Her citations on GS do seem to be very slender at present. Xxanthippe (talk) 03:45, 7 August 2019 (UTC).

Flag icon for indigenous peoples

I've translated several articles about Norwegian Sámi women for the indigenous women event. In the Outcomes section, next to their name, I'd like to include the icons for the Sámi flag and the Norwegian flag, but can't sort out how to add the Sámi flag. It applies to these biographies: Karen Anette Anti, Annelise Josefsen, Aino Hivand, Hanne Grete Einarsen, and Anne-Grethe Leine Bientie. If anyone can sort it out, thanks. BTW and FYI: Category:Flags of indigenous peoples. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:41, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

I'm in the same boat with the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma's flag, images here and here. Seems to me it is not just a matter of uploading an image, not sure how that is done as I don't know the rules for symbols, but also creating a template, which I have no idea how to do. It's for Keri Ataumbi. Thanks! SusunW (talk) 20:49, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
@SusunW: so I figured out how to create the template for a flag icon, and did so for Quechua and Sami. If someone can upload the Kiowa flag image into Commons (maybe Victuallers?), I'd be glad to create the Kiowa flag icon. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:19, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
Woo Hoo Rosiestep. All that was above my paygrade :) so I'm glad you at least figured out part of it. SusunW (talk) 21:22, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
Rosiestep: I'm glad you were able to create the Sami flag icon. I tried the normal flagicon template but it doesn't work. How do you do it?--Ipigott (talk) 13:48, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
I now see it's "flagicon|Sámi people". But how do others find it?--Ipigott (talk) 13:52, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
Ipigott, I don't know why, but they auto-populate this category: Uncategorized country data templates. BTW, as there was a flag icon in the Outcomes section for Hopi Reservation (Patty Talahongva's biography), I used its flag template, {{Country data Hopi Reservation}}, as a go-by to create {{Country data Quechua people}}, {{Country data Sámi people}}, and {{Country data Zapotec civilization}}. I'm hopeful I did the process correctly, but mostly, I was just being bold in creating them. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:17, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
I'm still totally confused how to do this, and have completed the Bio for Sandy Fife Wilson. She needs the flagicon for the Muskogee (Creek) Nation, which is shown here Native American Flags: Oklahoma, but I cannot figure out how to make the image work as an icon. SusunW (talk) 21:15, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
Yay! :) I am pumped you and Rosiestep figured this out, except that isn't their image. I grew up in the area and their flag is white. It's pretty confusing as there are images on the commons page that are marked as Muscogee (Creek) but are not. The Smithsonian[13] has one. There are two versions sold on line, one [14] uses the spelling Muskogee and the other[15] uses the the "C" spelling. You can see the version with the "c" is the one the tribe actually uses now in this 2019 press release.[16] The version we have on commons is the older "k" versionof the Muscogee Nation.png
Then there is this [17], [18] which are wrongly identified in Commons and should be renamed as State of Muskogee (Florida)[19] with a "K". The flag you used to create the template[20] indicates it was the Civil War Confederate flag of the Creek Nation, but I can find no reference for it? I was able to change the image on the template, but it needs to be renamed to Muscogee (Creek) Nation.
I am sure you did not intend to open this can of worms, Ipigott, but I am happy you did so it can be fixed. We really need someone who works a lot with commons to sort all this out and properly rename these various flag images. We need to correct our flag image on the Muscogee Nation to the version they are presently using and I still need the Kiowa flag image to be uploaded. SusunW (talk) 14:59, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
SusunW: As you say, it's quite a can of worms. I'm not at all sure I'm competent to make all the changes you think we need. Have you any contacts who are sufficiently interested to carry out the work?--Ipigott (talk) 15:33, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
Ipigott Wehope was my goto person on Commons, but she has retired. I know I don't know how to do it, but maybe I can figure it out if someone else doesn't come to our rescue. :) SusunW (talk) 15:47, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
Perfect! SusunW (talk) 14:49, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
I managed to put page move rationales on the other 3 images, so hopefully someone will actually rename them so it is not as confusing. SusunW (talk) 15:36, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

Kiowa

SusunW: I've found this for Kiowa. It's not a very good image but I could no doubt make a usable flag icon from it. As I don't want to make any more mistakes, please let me know first if it's the right one. Are there any other tribes which need to be covered?--Ipigott (talk) 13:26, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

Thank you Ian! That is the correct image. The flag background is blue, i.e. like here [21]. There are tons of them. At the end of the removal process there were over 77 tribes in Oklahoma alone and you can see from that link I showed before on all the tribal flags, there are only about a dozen with images there. SusunW (talk) 14:48, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
SusunW: The problem here is that the flag with a blue background is not on Commons. I see there is a very good image here with a contact number. If you are really keen to have it on Commons, perhaps the first step would be to have it released under a suitable licence. Ditto for most of the flags of the other tribes. Looks as if it could be a useful assignment for an intern or a student specializing in the field.--Ipigott (talk) 06:14, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
Alerting Victuallers to this conversation as he deals with training organizations on how to upload their images to Commons. He may have some pointers on how to proceed. --Rosiestep (talk) 12:53, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
One of the problems here may not just be getting permission, but also then convincing commons that you represent the tribe. OTRS is one solution but too slow for me. I would suggest that the tribe add a cc by sa statement to their website. Victuallers (talk) 07:40, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

Choctaw

Ipigott, I need the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma flag, which appears at the top of the article, but has no flagicon, for Valjean McCarty Hessing, please and thank you! SusunW (talk) 23:29, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

Samantha Yammine

I'd welcome second opinions about the issues raised at Talk:Samantha Yammine. XOR'easter (talk) 16:16, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

Particularly now that an IP editor is wanting to edit-war over it... And is making downright odd changes like removing the "Living people" category. XOR'easter (talk) 20:10, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
I'd say you've just been hit by someone with an agenda of their own (whatever it is). That IP's other edits should be gone through and reviewed too. -Yupik (talk) 21:07, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

Sophie Drinker Institut

The Institut has a biographical database of articles about women musicians of the 18th and 19th century: https://www.sophie-drinker-institut.de/lexikon

If I understand the German correctly (and I quite likely do not), there are around 750 biographies here; cursory research has indicated that a lot of the subjects do not currently have articles in the English Wikipedia, though some do in other languages. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 13:44, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

Help with my first page: sources and neutral tone

Hi this is my first time writing on a talk page! Apologies if I am doing it wrong. I've made some edits in the past, but recently tried to create my first page Draft:Shannon Liss-Riordan. Very notable labor attorney/feminist widely covered in the news over the last decade, now a political candidate. My first try was declined and I've done more editing - I would love if someone can take a look and try to improve on it. I've also been unable to understand/find a non-free image. Shanmcf (talk) 20:22, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

Shanmcf, I am sorry, I have not had time to circle back yet. Possibly Megalibrarygirl can take a look at it? If not, by Monday, I should be able to shake free of other obligations. SusunW (talk) 21:17, 3 August 2019 (UTC)
@SusunW and Shanmcf: I can take a look at it probably tommorow and maybe by mobile tonight. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 00:19, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
@SusunW and Megalibrarygirl:Thanks for offering to take a look at this page - I've been learning a lot trying to create my first page from scratch. Enjoying adding to other Women in Red pages and appreciate seeing other's edits and improvements. Shanmcf (talk) 12:51, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
@Shanmcf: I looked over the bio and I don't see any problems with neutrality, personally. Susun, would you mind taking a look to see if I missed anything? Also, Shanmcf, don't forget to sign your posts with ~~~~. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 21:34, 4 August 2019 (UTC)
I think you should downplay her candidacy and play up her co-founding the firm. I've read it somewheres that candidates are not notable because they are candidates, which makes sense to me so that people don't exploit the platform for political agendas. I feel like you've explained the Uber case, but not the FedEx of Starbucks ones so you could expand the article in that regard. I see the firm's website lists her recognitions. I think it'd be good to list these, especially if you can find a WP:RS for them. Welcome to WiR and hope these suggestions help! Fred (talk) 00:19, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
@Frederika Eilers:Thanks, I was confused because an editor cut out the parts I had about FedEx, Starbucks, and American Airlines. I can try again on those ones, to keep them more encyclopedic.Shanmcf (talk) 12:51, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
  • The AFC submission was turned down for a) not being encyclopedic in tone and b) not having enough in-depth coverage. As for a), I gave the into quotes a trim and rearranged some material so I think it is OK. There is still a problem with excessive citations, which perhaps a skilled copy editor could fix. As for b), I think items like this Wall Street Journal profile are in-depth coverage. Perhaps a copy editor would like to work on the article a tad and push it to mainspace?ThatMontrealIP (talk) 01:13, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
Shanmcf I had a look at the draft, and it looks great! There were a few minor things to think about changing. Reference #3 has a citation error flag (ModernLuxury) - you could enter that one again. The second paragraph of the Early life section uses passive language, a change like: "In 1992 she coordinated a seminar at...." is more active. Lastly, in the Career section there are two places with long lists of citations. Some editors find this annoying for some reason. See WP:CITEBOMB. You may want to develop this section adding some content on the various companies and suits rather than grouping them together. Just a thought... Netherzone (talk) 01:20, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
@Netherzone:Thank you for the tips here! I was confused becuase I'd originally broken out notable cases like the restaurants, Starbucks, FedEx, and American Airlines, which an editor then cut out (except the opening about startups and paragraph about Uber). I then tried to add them back in as a group instead, since besides the independent contractor lawsuits, I thought the cases about tips/wages confiscated by employers are the other notable labor cases. Shanmcf (talk) 12:51, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
  • I've just had a look at this one. It looks to me as if it should be moved to mainspace but someone might object to the fact that she's still a candidate and not yet elected. Nevertheless, given the extensive string of sources, she seems notable enough for her achievements to date.--Ipigott (talk) 13:43, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
Hi Shanmcf - I understand your perspective on the notable cases in the Career section, they are important. Do you mind if I take a stab at turning the first sentence of the Career section into two sentences, and integrating the citations into the text a little differently? You can always undo my edit. Either way, I think it is strong and will pass in article space. Netherzone (talk) 14:16, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
I just smoothed out the text in the early life section and rearranged it for better chronological flow. I concur that it looks as if it is fine in mainspace, IF you remove that sentence in the lede that she is running for office. That will be a problem and could lead to a deletion nomination. She is not notable as a candidate, instead she is notable for her activism and cases, which should be stressed in the lede. Overall, great job. For future reference, avoid sending articles to AFC (Articles for Creation), they fare better if you post the draft links here. SusunW (talk) 15:43, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks again Netherzone SusunW, please feel free to take a stab at additional edits. Makes sense about the legal work v candidate. It's challenging to know what editors do/don't want - she was also a big part of the Upper Crust Pizzeria case which I wrote a few sentences about and then that got removed from a draft too. Mary E. Eaton

I was tweaking the article on Mary E. Eaton and noticed that the only reference lists her as "Mary E. Eato". It seems to me the page should be moved to Mary E. Eato and reorganized to indicate that Ms. Eato was sometimes AKA "Eaton". Could I get a second opinion on this? Also does she meet notability standards? Thanks to any volunteers taking a look at this. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:01, 9 August 2019 (UTC)

Mary E. Eaton fwiw. --Tagishsimon (talk) 16:06, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
I've just searched in Newspapers.com, and found about a dozen results for "Mary E. Eato", from 1891 to 1926, including her graduation and death notice (those after her death are her students' reminiscences). There are other results in books with the spelling Eato, too. (I'll add useful refs to the article.) I also think the page should be moved to Eato, with aka Eaton. RebeccaGreen (talk) 17:51, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
With RebeccaGreen's edits, the page has been moved to Mary E. Eato. Thanks Tagishsimon for taking a look. Best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:33, 10 August 2019 (UTC)

Well, it's nominated now.

DYK article alerts?

It's not clear to me how Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Article alerts is supposed to work. I nominated Dorothy Olsen for DYK a few days ago. I was sort of expecting it to show up on the alert list, but it's not. Is there something I needed to do in the nomination to make it show up? The article is in Category:Women Airforce Service Pilots, which rolls up to Category:Women. Is that not enough? -- RoySmith (talk) 12:32, 11 August 2019 (UTC)

You have to tag the talk page of the articles with the project's banner. Right now, it has {{WikiProject Biography}}, {{WikiProject Oregon}}, {{WikiProject Military history}}, so it will show in the alerts of those projects. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 12:40, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
Note that if you add {{WikiProject Women}}, it will show in Wikipedia:WikiProject Women/Article alerts, not Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Article alerts (those alerts are based on the {{WIR}} banners). This is why most people interested in women articles beyond WIR should watch Wikipedia:WikiProject Women/Article alerts instead of / in addition to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Article alerts. Early August FP report

So, the Sarah Bernhardt, Sally Ride, and Lillian Ascough images all passed. Also:

Chelsea Manning

No current ones at the moment; I've been slowed down a bit by working through an image I said I'd restore, which proved difficult, and, while it does contain a woman, Edith Keteltas Wetmore redirects to her husband, so probably not in our wheelhouse.

I knew that name sounded familiar; I started an article about their daughter Maude A. K. Wetmore last month. Penny Richards (talk) 13:52, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
I was eyeing her, but the LoC (the most likely resource for photos of her) is down until Monday. Remind me to check. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 6.8% of all FPs 15:59, 11 August 2019 (UTC)
