Midland Metro icon in routeboxes

I notice that you've changed "midland" to "birmingham" in the rail interchange template. I'd like to request a reversion, as the name of the network is "Midland Metro", not "Birmingham Metro", and it also serves the city of Wolverhampton; and there are as many planned lines that don't serve Birmingham as those that do. This makes it somewhat different to Manchester Metrolink, London Underground, Sheffield Supertram et al. I just can't see the reason for the change - sorry! I just spotted your self-revert! If you're really worried, then add a new entry for {{rail-interchange|wolverhampton}} and point it to the same logo. (A similar example I can think of is Rotterdam/Delft). My intention with the {{rail-interchange}} template was to abstract away issues of current branding, current link, current naming... In a place with only one form of rapid transit, it's simple—in a place with several, then it'd be 'tram/etc' (again, not branded).

I would urge you to consider if there's any reason other than regional pride, why the addition Wolverhampton entry would be necessary, although if you feel you need it, please do go ahead and add it. —Sladen (talk) 13:30, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm hoping to avoid setting a precedent at this early time. The (idea behind the) {{rail-interchange}} is be a function that maps a $place and $method_of_transport to details of its local rapid transport (most visible the icon that people have already added). If I've just placed a node on a diagram (eg. Birmingham Moor Street), then it should be as simple as placing a {{rail-interchange}} link next to it with the same name. The template is a function, an abstraction layer. $f(where,how)\to brand,link,icon(s)$

What I am interested in, is, if you can think of any instances where this interface—as it stands—will not easily scale to. "If it ain't broke don't fix it"! Consider what happens when Birmingham builds a metro, a monorail or futuristic pod transport system... what will they all be known [branded] as? —Sladen (talk) 16:12, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Multiple methods

My hope in the future is that it will be possible to do something like:

NR Roundel

I've just reverted a change altering this template to use the National Rail (blue) roundel instead of the BR (red) double-arrows; the National Rail logo is AFAICT far more restrictive in use and licensing implications than the generic double-arrow logo. —Sladen (talk) 02:15, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

The national rail Roundel is not as restrictive as Is being made out by the above comments. As National Rail is a state owned company the logo falls under crown copyright. Crown copyright allows for the use of logos such as the roundel for illustrative and educational purpose, as is being done within the template. The roundel also does not have an original author so is covered in the same way as the underground roundels are. If this is disputed please can evidence to support how the use is more restrictive be provided and please can elaboration on in what ways it is more restrictive be given. The National Rail ATOC (Association of Train Operating Companies) logo is a derivative; combining the British Rail (now DfT) inverse double-arrow with new logo elements and the words "National Rail". Anything that applies to the DfT logo will therefore apply even more strictly to the ATOC logo. I have not been able to find anything that refers to the ATOC Limited as being government owned, nor are government representatives listed in the ATOC membership list (further information welcomed).

There appears to be a basic reason that the BR (red) logo appears on street-signs, maps and pamphlets—because (as a trademark) it is permissively allowed to do so. The National Rail (blue) logo (as a trademark) only seems to appear in connection with member-provided information displays and the National Rail Enquiries Limited timetable information service.

For Wikipedia it would be highly preferable to have the least restrictive trademark (the image is hand-drawn from scratch) and the one which matches other wider use. —Sladen (talk) 12:21, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

National Rail icon

At present, there's no visible icon for the london|rail option. The obvious candidate would be the circular part of Image:NationalRail.svg, but that's a copyrighted image used under our fair use guidelines, which don't allow non-free images to be used in templates. My understanding is that the image was a bitmap downloaded off the web. If a new one is drawn from scratch, that might fall under use of a trademark, but shouldn't fall under any copyright issue ("I draw it afterall..."). When I investigated this issue last week, the circular National Rail logo (BR double arrow in reverse colour on blue circle) is a trademark of the ATOC ("National Rail"). The plain BR double-arrow (red on white, or white on red) was transferred to the DfT and seems to be available for any british rail (lowercase) related use. Eg. on road signs. Research notes: "S 38 B 13/11/02 Railway station symbol On website 31 Jan 2003" from [1] (PDF). NR logotype (PDF doesn't render correctly) [2]. Then the NR Design Guidelines (Page 18) states:

The double arrow symbol, indicating access to the National Rail network, can be used in many forms but these have restrictions and should only be used in specific areas. This page indicates the differing forms and specifies areas of application. The double arrow symbol is owned by the Department for Transport which licenses its use. Where space permits, the following acknowledgement is to be included: “The [SYMBOL] logo is a registered trade mark in the name of the Secretary of State for the Department for Transport”

Page 19 then goes on to give "Example use on third party maps", which differentiates between stations immediately at the vicinity and those within walking distance. There are two shapes of the logo, depending on whether the logo is used in red-on-white, or white-on-red:

It is important to know that the reversed version is not just a white copy of the positive version. It is actually slightly heavier in weight to give the visual impression of being the same when reversed.

Thank you for your research in this area. Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria exemptions says: "Non-free images may be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes)... Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis if there is a broad consensus and so long as doing so is not in direct conflict with the Wikimedia Foundation's licensing policy." I think there would be little disagreement that it is fair to use the National Rail symbol to identify National Rail stations, as we are already doing with the Tube roundel. — Hex (❝?!❞) 20:27, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

We should not have any of symbols if this is the case that none can be used even though it is fair-use as it quite clearly shows to the user what the interchange is. However if this is going to be a sticking point we need an alternative to the symbols.. text is the only way (in a sense even these are copyright/trademarked). pebbens (talk) 22:34, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Generic train symbol

OK, I'm putting forward an alternative - a generic train symbol used in European and American signage. If we can't use the old BR arrows (I'm not convinced it will be that much of a problem but there you go) then we should opt for something instantly recognisable. This image is used increasingly on public station signage, so it has a recognition factor. Hope you like it. I've tried adding it to the template but it doesn't seem to have stuck - might just be server lag, or perhaps I've messed up. Wikidwitch (talk) 09:11, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

I would like to reopen this issue by pointing out that the succession boxes for the TfL lines have roundels on them. The licensing for these roundels is the same as for File:National Rail logo.svg (the old red logo not the blue one in a roundel!), i.e. that they are uncopyrightable as works of simple geometry but that trade mark rules may apply. Surely we are OK so long as we only put the logo next to things that are genuine parts of National Rail for legitimate purposes of identification? It is not like we would be putting it next to a picture of Hitler. If we can use it then I think we should. It looks so much better than the generic logo and is instantly recognisable by a UK reader in a way that the generic logo is not.

Anyway, I had already tentatively added it to the rail succession box headings for National Rail and London Overground before I saw this discussion so I thought I ought to mention it. I'm sure these images will work fine in s-rail headers (as their descriptions indicate they were intended to be used), but they are less helpful in route diagrams, as one would need to know the TTC's colour coding to understand what they indicate (whereas the previous icons were quite clear). International Services

I would like to add a section for international services such as Eurostar and Thalys though as these services are not based in a location they do not have an obvious non branding option. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I was thinking the following code but this has branding in it.

Illinois/Indiana

I'm interested in adding lines from Illinois (and Indiana) starting with the South Shore Line (but eventually including the Chicago 'L' and Metra. I think the main problem at the moment is the (apparent) non-free image issue, but (for the time being) could get by with generic icons and then switch them here instead of doing it in a hundred fourteen places later.

Am I correct in assuming that adding the following would be correct for the South Shore Line?

Denver RTD Commuter/Light Rail

Hi, I'm interested in getting some interchange icons for Denver's commuter/light rail system. I had written a template based on Template:Colorbox, which looks like so: User:Killian441/RTDrintUser:Killian441/RTDrint

I think this is pretty comparable to the icons on the RTD's webpage, [4]. Having done all that, I don't think that the code I generated would fit into this template, especially since it doesn't scale well, but I don't know how to generate appropriate icons. Requesting new icons for Argentina

Can I request a new icon for Metrobus (Buenos Aires)? On the Spanish wikipedia I've seen just the rectangular used, but that's probably too wide and would mess up templates (not to mention that the yellow background isn't part of the logo), so possibly just the "O" with the lines in the middle might work.

Also, with a link to Rail transport in Argentina would be useful. Similarly, it is one of the few countries I have seen on here that doesn't have a general Underground icon, which would also be very useful. SegataSanshiro1 (talk) 20:03, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

New Icon for Canada - UP Express

The problem is that the logo is (at least currently) stated to be non-free and only usable as fair-use (that is, not in templates, nor on talk pages). And since the text portion is certainly non-copyrightable, the artistic element must be precisely in that UP portion. But it would be good to hear from an expect on these things. I would say that UP alone is the correct stylization and usage from what I've seen in the real world, but lopping off the E from what you created could work. Like you said, certainly more clearer than the logo at a small scale. Even better, and if you felt creative enough Secondary, you could mimic the typeface seen here. But the reason I proposed using the stylized logo in the first place was because there are multiple other images in the template that are also copyrighted and fair-use (e.g. ), I was just following suit. --Natural R_X 21:01, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

Subtemplates

Since this template is now ridiculously large (and has a very large number of parser functions in it), should a system of subtemplates (e.g. Template:Rail-interchange/jp, Template:Rail-interchange/london) be created (one for every value of {{{1}}})? I think the way to go (excuse the pun) would be to alias {{rail-interchange|toronto|rail|…}} to {{rail-interchange|GO|…}}, and then {{rail-interchange|GO|bus}} → . Would that work? (There could even be a fourth parameter for route number, similar to {{rail-interchange|toronto|streetcar|#}}.) There is precedent for {{rail-interchange|system}} without a locale. I think {{rail-interchange|system}} would be optimal but I hesitate changing it so drastically when it is used on so many other places for so long. I was contemplating finding a way to work it into {{rail-interchange|toronto|bus|##}} but you'd have to bump the route number argument one spot, and existing usage would be affected in the same way. Hi there. I recently reverted your change to {{Rail-interchange}} because it seems to have introduced a template loop in articles (such as Barrie line and Newmarket Bus Terminal, part of GO Transit). This affected transcluded templates such as {{GO Transit Barrie}}, which is called from {{Infobox route diagram}}. Can you please investigate why these changes had this effect? Given your comment, I checked the two transcluding templates, but they haven't been edited recently. I dunno. The transclusion on Barrie line was annoying, as it expanded the width of the infobox to almost the width of my browser (viewport) as a result of displaying the error message. Perhaps it only happens with this subset of GO Transit articles. I compared User:Useddenim/GO Transit to {{GO Transit Barrie}}, and it appears the active template uses {{rint}} (not in your test page), which is where the problems are occurring. Note that one of the edits to {{Rail-interchange}} after my revert has reintroduced the error. Mindmatrix 17:12, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

I figured out why it appeared to work in the sandbox: it seems that it was transcluding from the real template, not the sandbox. I also found the typo (an extra pair of }} ). So I think the fix will be to add a new gotransit argument, then chase down and replace all the toronto|rail calls. (Once most of them are done, I think maybe the thing to do next would be to change the toronto|rail icon slightly so that and remaining older use is visible.) Hi all. It appears recent changes to this template have introduced template loops. I reverted one change, but a subsequent (different change) has had the same effect. It appears to involve {{rint}}, and its effects can be seen on Barrie line and the transcluded template {{GO Transit Barrie}}. On my browser, the error messages generated cause the infobox to expand to nearly the width of my viewport. Mindmatrix 17:18, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

I didn't notice that {{rint}} is just a redirect to {{Rail-interchange}}, which explains the loop anyway. Why the error messages started to occur after recent edits is still an issue, though, as {{GO Transit Barrie}} hasn't been edited in many months. Mindmatrix 17:22, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

It seems to have disappeared now, which is odd, since I had purged my cache several times when loading those pages earlier. It basically widened the infobox to the width of the page, and underneath the name it stated "Template loop detected: Template:Rail-interchange Template loop detected: Template:Rail-interchange"; in the route map, all calls to {{rint}} resulted in a display such as "Template loop detected: Template:Rail-interchange Parkdale Jct. Milton line". It appears to have been related to the logos that appear adjacent to the entries (for the Parkdale example, it would be File:Milton line GO logo.png). It's working now, so perhaps the changes I reverted should be reintroduced. Mindmatrix 18:00, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

Purging your cache just re-fetches the page, it doesn't rebuild the page. You could try WP:PURGE which purges the server cache and rebuilds most of the page; if that doesn't work, a WP:NULLEDIT will completely rebuild the page. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:55, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

Copyright status of Beijing and Shanghai logos

Should the logos of Beijing Subway (File:Beijing Subway icon.svg{{rint|beijing|subway}}) and Shanghai Metro ({{rint|shanghai|metro}}) be in this template? There might be issues with their copyright status (they can't be uploaded to Commons) because they might not be public domain in China. Bus rapid transit

Hi there. I have created BSicon_BUS3.svg for use in this template, to signify bus rapid transit. Could someone with more template skill implement this into the generic aspect of the template? I believe it would be useful to structure it similar to {{rint|heritage}}:

• {{rint|bus}} for local bus service
• {{rint|bus|rapid}} for bus rapid transit service
• {{rint|bus|trolley}} for trolleybus service

Kuala Lumpur

One line has been merged into another line. I've deleted all Sri Petaling Line (so does the page also been removed) to mark the merger. But after rearranging, those lines does not corresponding to the icon link, despite the color has changed accordingly. Below are the templates.

@Useddenim 4 {{rint|my|rkl2}} Sri Petaling Line and 4 {{rint|my|4}} Sri Petaling Line (previously wearing a maroon colour which I've already changed) has been removed because this line has been merged with 3 {{rint|my|rkl1}} Ampang Line and 3 {{rint|my|3}} Ampang Line. Thus the above icons need to be change to represent the line stated. For example, 4 {{rint|my|rkl2}} Kelana Jaya Line and 4 {{rint|my|4}} Kelana Jaya Line; where the number of line (4) and colour are correct, but not the link of icon (when you put your cursor or click on icon 4, it link to the defunct Sri Petaling Line). Secondarywaltz, you're trying to name something directly, but naming something is the job of the template when given location and transport type as inputs. Could someone who actually knows how to write Lua code rewrite Module:Rail-interchange multi (used in {{Infobox station}})? I cobbled it flimsily together out of one of Sameboat's test modules last year, but it could definitely be expanded and written much more efficiently. The major issue about converting this template into module is that the template itself requires data fetched from other region-specific rail templates. This won't work for module:Rail-interchange multi if the regional data template isn't Lua-based. All of these templates must be first converted to something like module:MTR/data. frame:expandTemplate doesn't sound efficient because it still runs the parser functions of the source template and defeats the purpose having a Lua module. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 11:07, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

I recently rewrote {{currency}} which, like {{rail-interchange}}, is mostly just a big table; something that Lua does quite nicely. A brief inspection of {{rail-interchange}} indicates that doing the same is not as simple because it sometimes uses images and somtimes depends on a variety of supporting templates: {{S-Bahn-Basel}}, {{BLNMT-icon}}, ..., and their supporting templates (and they don't all return images or support |link=, |alt=, |size=). No doubt, all of these sub-templates have their own peculiarities so the question becomes where does one begin? Do we create lua versions of the base templates specifically for use by {{rail-interchange}}? Do we re-write the base templates so that they use a common data suppository and then rewrite {{rail-interchange}} to make use of that? It does seem to me that answering the data organization and form questions is the place to start.

@Trappist the monk: Probably move all the data in the supporting templates into the module (and probably delete the original templates for internal consistency), and then standardise parameters across the module. I agree that {{rail-interchange}} has become quite cumbersome (and yes, I know that I'm to blame for a lot of that as I continue to consolidate city- and country-specific templates into it). It would certainly be easier to maintain if it was just a matter of updating data lists. However: if/when it is converted to Lua, make sure that there is adequate documentation so that those of us who don’t program in Lua aren’t shut out. Useddenim (talk) 03:50, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

The 61 templates listed above are a small fraction of a much larger set, which are mostly constructed along similar lines. If converting this template to Lua means converting the colour templates also, that would certainly shut me out - I do a lot of work on the UK-specific colour templates, which at present are easily maintained. I cannot get the hang of Lua at all - and I'm a professional computer programmer with 20+ years experience of various languages. I have made just eight edits in Module: space - of those, six were reverts, one was a protection, and only one may be considered wholly constructive (that one involved no new code, just the amendment of an existing value, that somebody else had requested). The six reverts were because the reverted edit had been detrimental: in some cases (example), it would have been better to fix the reverted edit instead, but my Lua knowledge is not enough to be able to do that. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:50, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

If you can make that edit, you can maintain a Lua table of color values that would very likely look something like the snippet I've created in my sandbox. Since the templates must all have unique names, we use those names to identify the portion of the table that we're interested in. Lua doesn't care what order the table has so the colors can be grouped as they are in the list at Category:Rail transport color templates or any other way that makes sense to the maintainers.

Aside from resistance to and fear of change, any conversion to Lua will also have to take into consideration the (relative) ease of maintaining the template—as cumbersome as it is. Currently, anyone who understands the wiki-syntax of an image and can puzzle out a {{#switch:}} statement can edit the template without damaging it (a few cities with optional arguments notwithstanding). The problem of maintaining this color data module is that you will have to convince other railway contributors to fetch color data from this module for their more specific rail data templates, otherwise it will only create inconsistency. Hong Kong region already has module:MTR/data which can be loaded by mw.loadData('Module:MTR/data'). It handles the abbreviations of each rail line without duplicating the color code in the colors module so it looks counter-productive to duplicate the data for another module. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 02:51, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Data tables can be simple, understandable, and so maintainable by almost any editor. Or not. The simple table in Module:Rail transport colors is, I think, sufficiently simple that it can be maintained by anyone. Yes, color codes are duplicated when a rail line has multiple names, but that is a small price to pay for simplicity. The realization that there are many different names pointing to the same color for the same line may lead editors to remove some names. As an example of where some pruning might be in order see the color name 'uta trax sandy university line (2001-2003)'. That color name is not used in any article text and is assigned the same color as six other, apparently historical, names for the same line. Are the color templates really the proper place to keep a history?

If this color module is to be used, I had intended to make it just a data module so that it would be available as a central repository of color to any other module through mw.loadData(). The executable code that is in it now is only there to prove that the data table works and as an illustration of how the data can be fetched by a template.

I do not get the impression that editors here are in agreement to proceed with this module or with a rewrite of {{Rail-interchange}} and, in fact, sense some hostility. That being the case, perhaps I shall step aside until such time as you all are of a mind to continue.

What has happened to the Blackpool Tramway rail interchange?

I see that the Blackpool Tramway icon has been made in Microsoft Paint but that does not bother me. The 'e' that displays next to the icon that clearly shouldn't be there is what bothers me (), so please can this be removed? Nathan A RF

Toronto streetcar system

I was wondering if we could get Toronto streetcar system routes to appear in a box coloured in the TTC red colour, as seen here. They are rail lines and would work well in tables, infoboxes and maps instead of the current symbols we have for them, which keep them in transparent or opaque boxes. If this can be done, the generic tram symbol should be removed from the route template as well. Mexico

Hello. I'm trying to create a template for the country of Mexico (MX) with its mass transit logos and lines. The logos for each respected line and transit system are not showing up. I've been following the other countries templates. Examples include :* {{rail-interchange item|mexicocity}} and * {{rail-interchange item|mexicocity|1}}. Toronto update

A tweet (https://twitter.com/ttcdesign/status/855967778276298752) from the transit commission's official design department has clarified some details of line numbering and colouring. The Finch West LRT is now numbered 6 and is gray; the Sheppard East LRT is 7, and light green. (Previously these had been the opposite.) Please change the name Kurenivsko-Chervonoarmiyska Line to Obolonsko–Teremkivska line in the template for the the Kyiv metro. The name of line was changed on 2018.02.08 as explained on the official website of Kyiv (in Ukrainian) http://kmr.gov.ua/uk/content/kyyivrada-pereymenuvala-stanciyu-metro-petrivka-na-pochayna

I mean the reference to the line in the template, right now it contains a line which says

Template-protected edit request on 25 February 2018

This template has recently been copied over to Wikivoyage, where I have fleshed out the lines for the Netherlands. I have added the individual lines of the Rotterdam Metro (lines A through E), as well as operators on the main rail network. The edits can be found here. The way I edited the template, though, is in a way that simply copying it over will not work. Instead, the five instances where wikivoyage:Template:Routebox entry has been used should be replaced with instances of Template:RouteBox (which in itself is a different template for a different purpose on WV).

  I would say that the prot level should be left as it currently stands; this template a poor history of people making direct edits to the live template without first trying the proposal in Template:Rail-interchange/sandbox and demonstrating it at Template:Rail-interchange/testcases, contrary to WP:TESTCASES. @Primefac: I am not saying that every edit on Wikivoyage should be copied over to enWP. The template has recently been copied over to there, and we're still working out how to fix the template, hence the slight incompatibility issues I described above. What I am saying is that I have made edits to the template there, that would not go amiss here. These are edits all concerning the Netherlands, replacing the single logo for the Rotterdam Metro for the five lines it has, as well as add the rail operators of the Dutch railways. There are currently plans to automatically transfer edits from the template here, on enWP to enWV, which would mean that my edits would be undone as soon as the infrastructure for that is set up.

To touch on the compatibility issues again: Wikivoyage and Wikipedia have both got RouteBox templates with different purposes, hence I have used our (Wikivoyage's) alternative for RouteBox in the linked edits. The links that Wikipedia's RouteBox supports are not used, and do not have to be used (if they should, then link to Rotterdam Metro as no articles for the individual lines exist). All other information needed for the template can be gathered from the linked edits. I'm guessing that only makes things more confusing, so I've already written the wikitext for the edit required here. All I ask is that the lines in here replace the ones currently in the article, though checking for possible mistakes is always welcome. I hope this is sufficient information.

Hi, File:Istanbul public transport - Ferry line symbol.png was deleted from Commons 25 March 2018, causing errors on a number of templates and pages. New MBTA icons 29 March 2018

I've added a new optional icon for the MBTA. It continues to maintain the legacy icons/text and is tested at the bottom of my user sandbox (using preview page with this template). This replaces everything from | blue|green... to |boat.

Minnesota Metro

I'd like to add icons for the Metro transit system in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, US. Examples have been added to the sandbox and can be seen at this testcase section. An example is also below:

Just a general comment about non-free image use. Non-free content such as File:Osaka Metro Logo.jpg can only be used in the article namespace per WP:NFCC#9. This means no talk pages, no drafts, no user pages and no templates. Greyhound icon

How come {{rint|us|greyhound}} uses the bus rapid transit icon instead of the regular bus icon? Greyhound is intercity bus, not rapid transit. –Daybeers (talk) 18:31, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Please replace with as the image for |caltrain= with this diff. The latter image is much more legible. It's the secondary logo that Caltrain uses wherever the wordmark would be illegible due to space constraints. It appears on traincar livery and vending machines just like the wordmark. I've been trying to replace Module:MTR and I didn't realize that this template had been used with the {{RouteBox}}-style icons; I've replaced the template in that article for now.
