Hello AxG,
First of all Greetings from Spandau, part of the (former) British Sector of Berlin. You left me bazodee, or shall I write astonished and baffled. I know the Tagesschau now for almost as long as I'm born. And that's way back some decades ago, in 1965. Even if the announcement is pre-recorded, it's still read by a newsreader, usually these days, like today, by Jan Hofer, the chief-speaker (head-anchor). It is not an announcer like we know from Sky News or other TV stations. You better believe it, don't yuh? Joerg, the BajanZindy (talk) 00:25, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject Eurovision: Recent changes
editHello,
Please note that there have been some changes to operations surrounding Eurovision articles, these being that:
- Template names have now been standardised, for example Template:Countries in the Eurovision Song Contest and Template:Countries in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest have both been moved in order to be consistent. If you are planning to create a new template, please keep the standardised titles in mind.
{{WikiProject Eurovision}}
now accepts importance ratings as well as quality ratings, and the project now has a formal assessment department which gives details on how to assess articles, and provides a place for contributors to request re-assessment. Feel free to add the{{WikiProject Eurovision}}
template to the talk page of any new Eurovision articles you create.- The Eurovision Song Contest now has its own stub template at
{{Eurovision-stub}}
. Please only use this on Eurovision Song Contest stubs, with{{Music-stub}}
and{{Dance-stub}}
being the appropriate template for other Eruovision contests.
If you have any questions, please ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision.

Speedy deletion nomination of File:User AxG S.png
editA tag has been placed on File:User AxG S.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The problem with the File:Melodifestivalen.svg image
editHello! I understand your purpose of having the File:Melodifestivalen.svg image in the Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 article, but there is a problem: because the "2011" part is actually part of the image itself, either the image needs to be renamed so a new image with "2012" can uploaded — or we can remove the year part and write the year out as a caption instead, making the year part raw text and thus not a problem. How is your thoughts? Best regards, HeyMid (contribs) 20:47, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Your logo images
editHi. I was wondering why you keep making Fair use claims for many of the logos you upload, such as the ones for TV stations like File:ITV HD.svg, File:ITV Granada (Middle East & Asia).png, File:ITV4 HD.svg and logos for companies like File:Currys.svg, File:Dixons Travel.svg, File:British Gas logo.svg, and File:Currys Digital.svg?
Logos that consist of simple geometric shapes and text are not copyrightable and can be tagged with {{pd-textlogo}} or {{pd-text}} and {{trademark}}, along with {{SVG-Logo}} for .svg formats. Best, Matthewedwards : Chat 18:31, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

I decided to write to the city hall of Kent, Ohio, and seek clarification with the legal department, city manager, mayor, anyone as to whether the city had registered a copyright on the logo. They hadn't, they told me that it was free to use, and their reply is now in the OTRS records. The file was restored and moved over to Commons."I don't believe the image is copyrightable at all as nothing seems to cross the threshold of originality. It consists of an irregularly shaped pentagon. Simple geometric shapes such as pentagons cannot be copyrighted and so they are in the public domain. Inside the pentagon is a border, replicating the pentagon. Again, not copyrightable. Inside the border is a shape which resembles the punctuation symbol "caret" (^). Below the caret is a shape that resembles a W, and below that, another W with a vertical line protruding from the center point. As a tree it is a standard representation using geometric shapes. Outside the pentagon are the words "THE CITY", "OF KENT", and "⋅ OHIO ⋅". Simple typeface cannot be copyrighted. Surrounding the words "THE CITY OF KENT OHIO" is another pentagon with a border.
Because the elements that make up the logo are nothing but the colour green, geometric shapes, and letters, and/or minor variations thereof, none of which either alone or in combination meet the threshold of originality, the image is not copyrightable. Originality comprises of two parts. Independent creation (in that it has not been copied from another work), and sufficient creativity. The US Supreme Court has ruled that "the requisite level of creativity is extremely low; even a slight amount will suffice", but also noted that standard designs, figures, names, lettering, typographic ornamentation, colours, and geometric shapes, are not creative enough to be copyrightable. People often incorrectly assume that logos are copyrighted, but they aren't. Best Western have tried to copyright their logo, similar in style, three times, and have been denied each time because it consisted of a geometric border, words, and a crown that could resemble a stylised W."
- By the way, it's absolutely true that Best Western Hotels' logo is in the public domain, per the say-so of the United States Copyright Office and the US Copyright Review Board. In a long-story-short version, here's why:
- http://ipmall.info/hosted_resources/CopyrightAppeals/2006/Best%20Western%20Logo.pdf is the actual document from the Copyright Review Board. It's also an interesting read if you have ten minutse to spare
- The blue area is a pentagon (albeit an irregular shaped one with rounded corners, and one that appears to be the shape of a house). Simple geometric shapes such as pentagons cannot be copyrighted and so they are in the public domain. (Even if veiwed as a representation of a building, the "building" is so generic that it cannot be copyrighted in that respect.)
- The letters "BEST WESTERN" appear inside the pentagon. Simple typeface cannot be copyrighted.
- There is a yellow pin-striped "border" within the pentagon. Again, this is a geometric shape which cannot be copyrighted.
- Whether the "W" is viewed as the letter W or as a stylised crown, it is a commonplace design; as a crown it is a standard, albeit stylized, representation of a crown, drawn from a series of lines and prongs with an added element at the top where an emblem, jewel or other decoration would normally appear on a crown; as a W it has been rendered as such many times before, and letters of the alphabet and its typeface cannot be copyrighted.
- Because the work consists entirely of elements that are non-copyrightable the work cannot be copyrighted, even if you look at all these elements together as one piece of work rather than several individual items it still cannot be copyrighted.
- Even though someone thought of putting all these elements together in this specific manner, the arrangement and placement does not embody sufficient creativity because the lettering is all centered inside the pentagon, and the pinstripe border cannot be placed anywhere else. This is wat's known as the threshold of originality. Additionally, the US doesn't recognize or copyright sweat of the brow (creative thought) since 1991's Feist Publications v. Rural Telephone Service (all interesting articles).
- As for the file you asked about, absolutely, File:ORF III logo.svg is tagged fine with those templates. The red rectangle and grey trapezoids are simple geometric shapes. The letters and typeface cannot be copyrighted.
- The reason I think that no one has ever mentioned it before is that not many people realise, first of all, second, if they do, they're too lazy to actually change the templates when they see them, or three, it's safer to stick with a FUR than run the risk of tagging something as PD when it isn't.
- The Ford, Audi, Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, and Chevrolet car badges or logos are all public domain for the same reasons. They're either letters, in the case of Ford and VW, or simple geometric shapes in the case of Audi, Mercedes, Chevy and BMW. Most of the current ITV logos are PD because they are made up of the letters "ITV 1" placed on two different coloured rectangles. Even File:ITV2 logo 2008.svg. Tilting it a bit and using a 3D 2 doesn't add anything. And even the older logos like File:ITV2logo1.jpg are safe, because that's an oversized non-copyrightable "2" in a non-copyrightable square, with the non-copyrightable letters "ITV" underneath. Talk page assistance
editHi AxG,
I was wondering if you could be able to offer some guidance or assistance with what I think could be a technical issue on my talk page. The MizaBot thing doesn't appear to be archiving threads any more, and hasn't done so for a couple of months now. I thought it archived automatically for me, or do I need to be doing it manually? Also, is there one of those template boxy things for London 2012 Olympics, that I would be able to use on my main user page? Thank you in advance - Wesley Mouse (talk) 19:21, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

editRegarding this and its predecessors: you really need to read WP:DEPROD. - AxG, I was doing a browse on JESC articles, and noticed that the File:JESC_2012_Map.svg isn't actually saved in SVG format, but has been altered into PNG format, and the file size is way too large. The file size also keeps in-line with that size used for ESC, as well as the map style too. Wesley Mouse (talk) 18:01, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

File:The Children's Channel.svg needs authorship information
editThe media file you uploaded as File:The Children's Channel.svg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.
It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.
Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).
- If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which:
{{subst:usernameexpand|AxG/Archive 13}}
will produce an appropriate expansion,
or use the {{own}} template.
- If this is an old image, for which the authorship is unknown or impossible to determine, please indicate this on the file description page.

RE: Suggestions per discussion at Talk ESC2012
editHi AxG, as per discussion at Talk:Eurovision_Song_Contest_2012#Broken_references_and_other_issues, I have now complied a draft version via my sandbox based upon what has been suggested. Would it be possible to double-check it for me, and let me know if it looks OK or not, before I start adding it to the main article itself. I know that the draft version shows some red broken links, but they would fix themselves once added to the main article. Thanks in advance - Wesley Mouse (talk) 18:31, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

ITV Companies Move
editHi, AxG,
I think the ITV Companies renaming/move has been a bit hasty and without consensus - see User_talk:JHunterJ#ITV_Companies_Move.
I feel there needs to be a real debate on this issue, but unfortunately I've struggled to find interest whenever I've raised it in the past. As you suggested the move, I've raised it with the admin who moved it, see above. -- Fursday 01:11, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I don't mind taking part in a debate. Sounds like it could be an interesting one, from what I've read so far. I fully understand both sides of the debate, and hopefully can help in building a consensus to resolve the matter peacefully and swiftly. Wesley Mouse (talk) 01:41, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of File:Eurovision Song Contest 2012 logo.png
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on File:Eurovision Song Contest 2012 logo.png, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Luciann Mosescu's continuation of adding fake material to JESC 2012
editHi AxG, just a quick note to let you know that I nominated File:JESC 2012 logo.png for speedy deletion a few hours ago, as I noticed that you reverted his edits for adding fake content. I also warned the user on commons too, plus added a speedy deletion notification on his wiki talk page. I'll be keeping a close eye in case he ignore warnings and persists to add fake material. It could be a case of him getting blocked if he continues to be ignorant. Wesley☀Mouse 00:45, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

Luciann Mosescu strikes again
editAxG, I think that Luciann Mosescu is being disruptive again by re-uploading images that got deleted from commons - image in question File:Eurovision_Selectia_Nationala_2012.PNG. I have informed CT Cooper about this (as see here). Luciann has been warned several times in the past about uploading fake images - even you have warned him once about creating a fake JESC2012 logo. The above linked image was nominated for deletion on 3 February at commons. The file subsequently got deleted on 11 February; to which I kept Luciann informed about this. Now the image has been re-uploaded only this time with incorrect copyright tags. Now I'm not 100% certain, but I'm sure this is classified as disruptiveness, isn't it? Recent edit on European Broadcasting Union article
editHi AxG, Hope all is well with you today. Just a quickie about this recent revert on EBU article. As strange as this might sound from me, but I think the IP user may have been right to change the name to Russian Federation, instead of the simplified version "Russia"; as the EBU's official membership list have the nation listed as Russian Federation too. I'm wondering if there is a consensus prior to me joining the project that decided on having them listed as Russia, and not Russian Federation as per EBU documentation?
On a different note, the Luciann situation may have been resolved. All images, including the Malta one you pointed out have now been removed from commons. I've put the user on my watchlist for any future re-uploads; as they would face a block if they reupload the images again. Not sure if you wish to add them onto your watchlist too. Well spotted over the "staged" part. I'm in utter shock over the BBC's Humpmeister decision, that I can no longer focus on what I am writing. Interesting to see how an "old" crooner will be able to sing a modern up-tempo song; that is if the song writers go for "modern". Can you imagine Engelbert chavving it up? - (talk page stalker) I think I've spotted the confusion with this. File:British Gas logo.svg is the new logo for British Gas, whereas File:British Gas.svg is the older version. I wonder if the newer version should have been uploaded as a 'new version' rather than a new image article all together. Is there any way to amalgamate them together? Wesley☀Mouse 19:21, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- No confusion, the two logos were on the Centrica article (their was not British Gas article), the new logo was being phased in, and similarly the other was being phased out, and so both were being used at the same time, on different media applications, first on vans, then newspapers, then TV and online. -- [[ axg ◉ talk ]] 19:27, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Eurovision: Discussion on recategorizing
editHello,
There is currently a discussion ongoing at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision#Recategorising on the proposal of recategorising following the rollout exercise of the new navigation templates (navboxes) within Eurovision articles. The consequences of this discussion could have a large impact on how articles are reorganized in future to provide an easier index system, so all project members are invited to participate in the discussion.

New Eurovision maps
editAxG, a quick question if I may about these new maps that now have links to country pages. When we add colours to countries, do we still edit them the usual way prior to the links being added or is there a new way to do them? Wesley☀Mouse 16:29, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
AxG, I noticed the removal of Finland again from ESC2013 article. I find it worrying really, as the site used to reference Finland is also being used to reference Hungary. I don't think that site is a blog, as its operated by WordPress.com; who are also the same host site that ESCToday are now using. If websites using wordpress are being considered as a blog, then wouldn't that now mean ESCToday is classified as a blog? Wesley☀Mouse 21:08, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
- I think I'm seeing things now. I was pretty sure the Hungary ref was using that same blog, although it doesn't now. But alas I put my mind to ease when I noticed in this diff that both Finland and Hungary where reffed to "myeurovisiondiary.com" Wesley☀Mouse 21:13, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Human Rights issues on ESC 2012
editAxG,
Sorry to come here moaning. I'm getting sick and tired of people adding the same content about this human rights stuff, when there is still an open discussion taking place on the article talk page. I've just reverted an edit from a user who re-introduced a big chunk of human rights stuff. Then I pointed out to them about the discussion, and rather than they engage, the re-reverted my move. Now I've reverted back again, but they are kicking off big time and saying that they should include it. Before I end up hitting my head on a brick wall, would you be so kind as to intervene and explain to the user what they are doing wrong? Thanks buddy! Wesley☀Mouse 18:44, 26 May 2012 (UTC)
Map showing bidding phase on Eurovision Song Contest 2013
editESCToday have confirmed there is a bidding phase for the host city of Eurovision 2013. Seeing as this bidding phase for host cities is now becoming a bit of a new Eurovision tradition, and we've incorporated such details by using a map showing the candidate cities on the 2011 and 2012 articles. I think you did the maps for both of the aforementioned articles, do you fancy the task of doing it again for a third year? Or perhaps teaching me how its done, and I don't mind giving it a try then. Wesley☀Mouse 14:59, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Something strange is going on
editAxG, something really strange is going on, and I haven't a friggin clue how its happening. I just noticed your edit summary remark in this diff, and then noticed the spelling error. What bugs me is I am British, and wouldn't even write in American-English; and I know full well that I wrote everything using British English. Although, thinking about it, a lot of the material is still the original written text, and I'm just juggling them about a bit into the new style. And also rewriting any copyvio text I come across. I noticed the pre-version of ESC 1956 was entirly copied from eurovision.tv; and I shrieked in horror when I spotted it. Which then lead me to contacting Cooper, and self-nominating to flush out all these copyvios, by rolling out the RfC proposed layout on the articles between 56-89. But anyhow, thanks for noticing the spelling error, even if I am baffled how it went to US-spelling and not the Brit-spelling that I know I wrote. Wesley☀Mouse 23:21, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
- Phew, I'm not going delusional. Just noticed a lot of the reaaaaaly old ESC articles appear to have been written in US-English. Leave it with me, and I'll fix'em all while rolling out the new standardised article style. Wesley☀Mouse 23:24, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
- I've left a note on my talk page in response to your question. Gonna take a break for an hour or so, as I've done nothing but revamp these articles for the last 6 hours (but I'm enjoying it really). Chat to you soon, AxG. Wesley☀Mouse 20:16, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Left you a note on my talk page in reply to the "&" thing. I haven't added that symbol anywhere on the articles, so it its there then it was prior to the revamp, as all the paragraphs are just being moved around, no text from its original state has been altered (with exception to the returning artists table, which has been rewritten into a prose format. RfC over UK band Blue's ambiguous title
editAxG, I've just had to open up a new RfC over at Talk:Blue (English band), following what I think was a premature RM closure. The article used to have "group" in brackets rather then "English band", and then a page move request was made. I kept stressing points out during the RM that "English band" is an incorrect title, as the band are globally established as a boyband, the members articles refer to them as a boyband, the sources also use the term boyband. Involved parties then said boyband or English band would be suitable. Clear evidence there that no concensus had really been reach as there were now 2 article titles in discussion, rather than one. Anyhow, the RM was closed and the page moved to English band (a move that I still feel was a premature decision). As a member of Project Eurovision, and also a fellow Brit; would you be able to have a wander over to the page, and put any thoughts forwards. Thanks. Wesley☀Mouse 16:13, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Bienvenue! Willkommen! Welcome! Please be warm-hearted in encouraging everyone to do their best to contribute to all Eurovision-related Wikipedia articles, and welcome our new members to the project. It is easy for editors to get into conflict with each other, and things can get very nasty on the most trivial of issues, whether that be on the language of songs, the names of certain countries, or how we deal with incidents at the contest. In such circumstances it is worth remembering one thing: we are all here to build an encyclopedia, and the contribution of Eurovision to human knowledge can only be given justice if we work together and make articles, not drama!
Happy editing!

As you know the Eurovision Project Newsletter is well and truly revived, thank to my efforts. What I aim to do every month is invite members to write a small article to add to the opening editorial section. June, I wrote the first piece; and Cooper did July's. I was wondering if you would like the opportunity to write something for the August edition? Yes, I know its early, but I like to be very organised and prepare things in advance. So, if you accept the offer then feel free to add something to the editorial section which starts "?". The draft copy is in my sandbox. Regards, Wesley☀Mouse 12:24, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Bienvenue! Willkommen! Welcome! Please be warm-hearted in encouraging everyone to do their best to contribute to all Eurovision-related Wikipedia articles, and welcome our new members to the project. The past month has been an eventful one for the project as a whole. Old dramas have closed, new ones have begun. Four articles nominated for GA review, three of them passed and promoted, with one of them making ProjectEurovision history by being the first annual contest article to ever achieve GA status. If it wasn't for the hard work and the many hours of team collaborations that we have endured on this project, then those accolades would never have been gained. Each of those article promotions are as a result of your continuous determination to be part of the best team this project has seen for a long time. There is a teamwork barnstar with this newsletter for you to cherish and you may display the award on your pages if you wish. Now we look to the months ahead and start preparations for Malmo 2013, and see if we can work to getting another annual article to GA status. Here's to you - the team of excellence.

Hello, thanks for patrolling new pages. You've tagged the page above for speedy deletion for being in a foreign language. That in itself isn't a valid criteria. There is criteria A2: "Articles having essentially the same content as an article on another Wikimedia project." However as it doesn't appear to exist elsewhere (for example at pt.wikipedia.org) the rest of the A2 advice applies: "If the article is not the same as an article on another project, use the template Not English instead, and list the page at Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English for review and possible translation." In this case the article is a copyvio and therefore gets tagged as G12 for copyright infringement. Valenciano (talk) 12:45, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Tesco plc.png)
editThanks for uploading File:Tesco plc.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:56, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Interactive maps
editAxG,
Do you know the interactive maps currently used on Eurovision articles? Would it be possible to replicate something similar across Junior Eurovision articles, and thus maintaining consistency? Wesley Mouse 10:10, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Eurovision: Recent changes
editHello,
Please note that there have been some changes to operations surrounding Eurovision articles, these being that:
- Template names have now been modernised and/or megred into super-templates, for example Countries in the Eurovision Song Contest has now been merged into Template:Eurovision Song Contest making it even easier to find everything under one template. If you are planning to create a new template, please keep the standardised titles in mind. Other templates have been modernised and a full list of them can be found here.
- The Eurovision Song Contest and Junior Eurovision Song Contest articles have now been standardised to keep a consitancy throughout the project and to the genral reader too. Skeleton article drafts can be found for Eurovision Song Contest by Year and Junior Eurovision Song Contest by Year.
If you have any questions, please ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Eurovision.
