2024 United Kingdom general election in Wales

edit

Please read the title and description of the table that is in question. 87.254.74.172 (talk) 16:39, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Fair, made an error there when I added the table. But I added it with the clear intention of having the Tories and Reform there as it was disputed whether to have them in the infobox. Plus it be ludicrous to omit them based on votes for readers. The two parties still got a lot of votes.
Thanks for pointing it out, but don’t delete it. Would've preferred if you just changed the description rather than remove large parts of it. DankJae 18:07, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello – A.D.Hope

edit

Hey Jae,

Maybe I'm just reading too much into things, but have I been annoying you lately? If I have I assure you it's unintentonal, and if there's anything you'd like to get off your chest please feel free to say it. I know I can be quite forthright on here, so I'd rather know if you think I need to rein it in!

No pressure to respond, and I hope you're doing well. A.D.Hope (talk) 17:09, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@A.D.Hope, I am a bit peeved by going against the MOS so advertently, and if we divert from it, at minimum it should have consensus or long-acceptance. If your edit was reverted (especially without consensus) don't just add it back in please, it looked inconsiderate, especially for a major change. However, I didn't revert it initially, but raised it until others did. But we're not all perfect and I too make bad judgements.
All I'll say is that I've noticed you prioritising "officialness", such as WP:OFFICIALNAMES, and well I have to monitor that a lot in Wales as places are getting renamed now. If I make the "we don't use official names" at Snowdonia, I kinda have to stick to my word everywhere else (or get critiqued for it), (even if I'd prefer other names). Plus the lead and title not matching seems off imo.
I appreciate you being bold, I am probably too un-bold, to the point I'm reconsidering my approach. In the end, if we're in the same topic area, we're eventually gonna bump into each other at some point  . I am now more busy than I used to so, I guess a bit more pressured to act. I still commend you for the amazing work you've done here! Kind regards. DankJae 18:05, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I won't make a full defence of myself over at Big Ben, but given there were about ten months between my edits to the lead I hope you can see why I thought of them as two separate BRD 'events' rather than one continuous dispute. I can definitely see your point of view, though, and looking back I should have opened a discussion.
To be honest, I think I've only ever seen 'officialness' as a means to an end. There are times where the MOS does have the answer to an issue, as with Snowdonia, and times where it isn't quite as helpful. I'm generally wary of advocating for something simply because it's in the MOS or a policy, but a lot of the MOS and policy is good and worth advocating for when it is relevant to a particular dispute.
If anything I'm the opposite to you, in that I can be very bold and I'm trying to rein it in a bit! I'm also finding it helpful to remind myself that there's no rush on Wikipedia – there's a time where I'd have tried to force the issue of flags at Devon and Cornwall, for example, but now I'm happy to have that discussion as and when the opportunity arises.
Anyway, I appreciate your response and I'm glad we seem to have been able to talk things through. As you say, we find ourselves editing the same topics a lot, and I do respect you as an editor and wouldn't want to fall out. Thanks for the kind words, and don't hesitate to say if you think I'm getting a bit too bold! All the best, A.D.Hope (talk) 18:57, 24 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Pentrehobyn

edit

Should any wealthy Wikipedian based in North Wales want to rent out Pentrehobyn for the weekend, [1] they could obtain much-needed photographs of two of Flintshire's Grade I listed buildings in a single visit. KJP1 (talk) 08:19, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

p.s. How on earth does the German Wikipedia have an article on Golden Grove, Flintshire when we don't didn't! [2] KJP1 (talk) 08:59, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@KJP1, probably a german on holiday.
Haha, I am not that wealthy to spend £1000s to have a break 12 miles away. :) DankJae 11:19, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
If it's only 12 miles, get on yer bike, say you are interested in booking a wedding, and get me images of the house and the weirdly named Llettau! KJP1 (talk) 11:53, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Dear Colleague,
You're most welcome. The editor's name is omitted from a signature created with five tildes, per WP:5TILDES.

@Pdebee, ah! Must've added an extra one by mistake. Oops. Thanks for the heads up! DankJae 19:40, 25 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's so easily done!   Glad I could be of assistance. Please keep well.

Summer Hill

edit

You are wrong that the Welsh translation of Summer Hill is Brynhyfryd. The error arises because Wrexham Council have wrongly translated Summer Hill as Brynhyfryd in their road signs, quite possibly as a result of consulting this wiki article. Wrexham Council have made other false translations as is widely known. Look at the early six inch ordnance survey maps of the area and nowhere will you see Brynhyfryd. It simply does not exist except as an error. Murgs2 (talk) 23:59, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Murgs2, you're not supposed to correct names on your own, but represent what name is used. Nonetheless, the Welsh name today is the so-called "incorrect" one. Raise it with the council first. We only change it here when they and others use your correction first. The Welsh language commissioner raised no objections to it. DankJae 00:01, 27 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Brynhyfryd occurs on no map of the area past or present. Summerhill does. The Summerhill development only dates from the 20thC and the name is English, not a translation of a previously existing Welsh place name. Brynhyfryd has therefore been (incorrectly) translated from English to Welsh. The Welsh borders have very few Welsh speakers which is why this error has gone unnoticed. We can also be sure that this is not a case of the Welsh calling an area one thing and the English another because Brynhyfryd does not appear on maps. The Ordnance Survey maps
name even the smallest collections of houses with their Welsh names yet do not record Brynhyfryd. Nor was this area anything but open fields before the first Ordnance Survey maps. 148.252.159.14 (talk) 02:07, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Still Original Research, if Welsh speakers don't have an issue with the so-called "incorrectly" translated name and still use it then we should include it rather than a generated fake (but direct translated) name. Wikipedia is not a place to WP:ADVOCATE for directly translated Welsh names by the preference of one person on the internet wanting to call it that to WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS of real-world errors before the places or sources use them themselves.
You need to provide a source of the alt Welsh name used for the Wrexham place, if you can't, it can't be used here. Raise it with the council or commissioner first, not Wikipedia. DankJae 07:13, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Community Maps

edit

Hi there. Quick question: do we really need two very similar maps in the infoboxes of towns? If community ones are better, shouldn't they replace the location marker ones? Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 08:07, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Sirfurboy, the pinpoint map is generated automatically by the template so can’t really remove it. Plus the pinpoint does show some other features like roads the community ones don’t. Understand the duplication concerns, would’ve preferred a switcher between the marker and the community but the template doesn’t allow it. So module was the next best thing. DankJae 13:09, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't really see the roads as a benefit. What is needed is a way to suppress the one in favour of the other. If I ever find the time (unlikely!), I'll look at the template. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 14:24, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Sirfurboy, good luck. I couldn’t see a solution, myself. Not sure how to mix a location map template with a svg file. But having one file at a time would be nice.
The template is template-editor protected, and found the talk page to be slow at adopting anything when I raised a few tweaks. DankJae 14:28, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Although note, for very large rural communities, with a small village of the same name. The pinpoint map is more accurate to pinpoint the village rather than the community map. So both have merit imo. DankJae 14:29, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Coleg Cambria

edit

With this Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Deeside College closed as TNT - no prejudice against recreation, do you want to do the honours of starting the new article? I believe you said you had materials for it. Personally I think it should be as Coleg Cambria, Deeside, with a redirect from Deeside College, but not sure what you think. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 22:26, 11 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

In the process of cleaning up in sandbox to see how it turns out, hopefully would be confident to move to draft soon. DankJae 00:29, 12 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Sirfurboy, made Draft:Coleg Cambria, Deeside. DankJae 22:29, 13 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Excellent, thanks. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 22:54, 13 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I made one minor addition to the lead. The lead is a little light at the moment, but not sure what else to add to it. The history in the article is excellent, and I expect this could be published asis. It is way better than most pages that get started. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 08:14, 14 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Sirfurboy, still a work in progress. As leads are summaries of the article, I usually leave them to do last when I’ve done the most to the body. DankJae 09:30, 14 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Although not opposed to just publishing it now, but still looking to see if I can add anything. DankJae 09:30, 14 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Probably should combine the two info boxes too DankJae 09:32, 14 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
