DYK for Arora Akanksha

On 28 March 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Arora Akanksha, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Thanks!

Thanks for reaching out to explain about the edit reversion and for the feedback on the other posts. I appreciate it. Right now, I'm really enjoying the process, but I'm finding the volume of documentation a bit daunting and hard to navigate. Any suggestions on top things new editors should be doing to better understand the community and its norms?

Thanks, Jack NerdOfAllTrades42 (talk) 01:22, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

NerdOfAllTrades42, honestly, the best way to learn is to do - just dive in. There are a lot of Wikipedia policies, but they all come back to the same foundation - the five pillars (WP:5P). Read that, and then start editing. The more you contribute, the more you'll learn.
Occasionally, someone will come along and revert your edit. It happens to everyone. Don't take it personally. Sometimes, you can start a good discussion from it and learn something - other times, it's just a drive-by. More often, you'll find Wikipedians happy to help a newbie. Cite your sources, avoid promotionalism, and contribute however it makes you happy. If you're looking for something specific, The Guild of Copyeditors (WP:GUILD) could always use folks willing to catch typos, or the Task Center (WP:TASK) has a bunch of good suggestions. But more than anything, do what you find interesting and engaging, whether that's adding stuff to articles on international tax law, taking images of local landmarks for the Commons and pictureless pages, or just fixing typos.
I'd be glad to keep on answering questions as you have them. Happy editing! Ganesha811 (talk) 01:39, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks so much, that's really helpful! NerdOfAllTrades42 (talk) 15:27, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Josh fight

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Josh fight requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organized event (tour, function, meeting, party, etc.) that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. RfC on racial hereditarianism at the R&I talk-page

An RfC at Talk:Race and intelligence revisits the question, considered last year at WP:FTN, of whether or not the theory that a genetic link exists between race and intelligence is a fringe theory. This RfC supercedes the recent RfC on this topic at WP:RSN that was closed as improperly formulated.

Comment from IP

Hey! My name is shahaf and I’m from Israel. Can you make a few changes in the Palestinian Israeli 2021 conflict (forgot the name) My English isn’t very good I hope you understand. There are 9 deaths in Israel (6 year old, solider, Indian worker, father and his 16 year old daughter, and more) In Gaza , 90+ of the deaths are actually terrorists who killed or planned killing. The rockets I’m getting on daily basis are war crimes. The Hamas is doing war crimes. The IDF target is to beat the Hamas so the Israeli and Palestinian citizens will not get hurt anymore. The Hamas target is the people in Israel and to creat fear and terror (after all, it’s a terror organization) I’m currently siting I’m a bomb shelter and I’m getting thousands of rockets daily, and yes. It’s Israel. Not Palestine. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.71.159.28 (talk) 11:48, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

I don't see how 'considered grey haired' can be described as encyclopedic. Valetude (talk) 00:57, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi Valetude! It's interesting that this has just come up - it relates to a subject I was discussing yesterday elsewhere (diff). I think Wikipedia writing can be dull, so small details like the one in question help to capture and hold the reader's attention. Simply put, I don't see what's unencyclopedic about it. It's reliably sourced and keeps the article flowing. Ganesha811 (talk) 01:27, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Either he was grey-haired or he wasn't. It's not a value judgment. Valetude (talk) 08:41, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Valetude, I agree, it was weirdly phrased. I've rephrased it in the article so it reads "grey-haired and considered handsome". That way the value judgement only applies to the subjective quality of "handsome." Ganesha811 (talk) 12:24, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Question re GAN for Biden subarticle

Hi. I'm intending to put Early life and career of Joe Biden up for GAN. Would you be interested in being a co-nominator? Also, is there anything more you are currently intending to add to the article? I think I have added/clarified the items that I had in mind. Fwiw I am the editor who originally brought the Joe Biden main article to GA status in 2008. Subsequently I retired from working on active contentious political articles, so I did not attempt to save the main article's GA status last year when it was removed. But I would like to at least see this subarticle get back part of that GA. Let me know. Thanks ... Wasted Time R (talk) 22:12, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

Wasted Time R, sure, I’d be happy to. I may be fairly busy, but I’ll help out with improvements and fixes where I can. There are no major expansions I have planned. I think we should be able to get this one to GA, but I agree that the main Joe Biden article is probably impossible to pass - it would never reach the stability required, regardless of quality. Thanks for your work on the article! Ganesha811 (talk) 22:28, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. The article is now nominated, with you listed as co-nominator. Wasted Time R (talk) 12:12, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi again. I have no problem with the additions you have been making to the article, however I note that on this addition, you include later discussion/speculation/commentary about a past event. Yet earlier you took out this material that I had added that included a similar kind of perspective on a past event, with your reasoning being that speculation/hypotheticals should not be given undue weight. But there has been more WP:RS commentary on Biden's history with the draft and in the context of that era than there has been on Biden and Corn Pop. So maybe you will reconsider the draft material, or suggest an alternate wording of it? Thanks ... Wasted Time R (talk) 13:06, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Wasted Time R, that's a fair point. I think the key is to share just the connections the sources make, and no more, to avoid WP:SYNTHESIS. In the Corn Pop case, the sources were explicitly talking about that story. I've re-added the first sentence I removed, about some observers finding Biden's asthma odd, since that's also the case there. But I think the general sentence that "some young men sought to avoid the draft" should be kept out unless there are sources specifically talking about that general phenomenon in connection with Biden in particular. Ganesha811 (talk) 13:14, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Okay. I've reworked and added that part of the material back in, this time using sources that explicitly include Biden in the discussion of that general phenomenon. Wasted Time R (talk) 00:13, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
Wasted Time R, sounds good, thanks for your work on it. Ganesha811 (talk) 03:25, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Can you tell me how to nominate for the second time? Thank you!

Hi Ganesha811, Is it the second nomination at the bottom of the template page of the last failed DYK nomination for Ink wash painting? I tried several times and failed. Can you tell me how to nominate for the second time? Thank you! --Jujiang (talk) 00:46, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Jujiang, I believe the best way would be to just nominate it again, using GA as the reason, as though it were the first nomination. It doesn't really matter for DYK that a previous nomination was ineligible, as long as you're not doing it every day without a good reason. But GA is a very good reason, so just act like it's a new nomination. Ganesha811 (talk) 02:44, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for guiding. Do you think this is correct? Thanks. --Jujiang (talk) 04:29, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
Jujiang, looks fine to me, but I don't do a lot of DYK stuff, so I'd recommend just following the guidance of whoever comes along to review it. Good luck! Ganesha811 (talk) 04:34, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Response to your message on my Talk Page

Hi. You left a message on my Talk Page regarding my edits connected to Larry Feign. I do not know how to directly respond to your comment, so I'm leaving a message here.

Please understand that I am a long term friend and colleague of Larry Feign, though I have no professional or financial interest in his work. I made these edits, and uploaded a book cover image, in order to clarify statements about him and to add new information about his latest work, purely as a service. There is nothing of a promotional nature in the formation of my content. I receive nothing in return except an occasional (not always) thanks. As to why the book cover image claims to be my work, I have no idea why that would be. I made no such claim. It is the cover of his book, designed by a graphic design firm in (as far as I know) Spain.

I do object to your removing the mention of The Flower Boat Girl on the article about Zheng Yi Sao. It is an important book in the literature about her. My edit includes mention of new discoveries by the author that are not mentioned in the body of the article — Preceding unsigned comment added by MD Whalen (talkcontribs) 00:53, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

List of Warriors

Hi, I found the discussion regarding your request to delete the list of Warrior cats on my first attempt to learn more about Wikipedia policies. I consider myself a relatively new editor with barely 100 edits and I am not sure what I want to do about this - much less how to go about it.

Having read several of the Warrior books many years ago (to keep up with my kids who were reading them) I was surprised at the low quality of the list you proposed to delete. Notable characters from the series like Firestar, Tigerstar and Bluestar that probably qualify for their own article just as much as "Severus Snape" does are hardly described. Their notability is not supported even though they are the basis for internet memes.

I agree with your original sentiment that the list should be deleted. I found a much better list on a dedicated Warriors Wiki and added it to the main article as and External link. I believe that the existence of that link obviates the need for the poorly maintained Wikipedia list that you proposed to delete.

I understand that you withdrew the request and started a meta discussion about lists. One of the considerations that matter to me is that leaving the list there encourages squandering volunteer resources on an inferior text when they could be better used to update and maintain a sister Wiki that does a much better job of covering the subject.

I am not sure how to express my subjective feeling that the list should be deleted or what the appropriate forum might be for discussing it. I would appreciate any suggestions. Annette Maon (talk) 17:08, 23 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello @Annette Maon: this is an interesting question. The next step I planned was to start a formal discussion aimed at changing some of these policies, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I want to be sure to get the wording right and make sure it's likely to get support. In general, I agree that this kind of content belongs on dedicated fandom Wikis, not Wikipedia. Thanks for your comments and I'd love to keep hearing from you as this process moves forward. Ganesha811 (talk) 12:15, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

@OlEnglish: that's no problem! Very understandable. I hope the article brings the project a little more attention - and given your answer, I'm curious to try to find out when the patrol began, so I may have to go trawling further back into old pages to see what I can find out. Talk:Palestinian enclaves/GA1

Ganesha811, I wanted to inquire as to whether you might wish to return to this review now that the quotes issues has been dealt with, or if you still prefer that another reviewer take over. If you wish another reviewer, then since the call for a second opinion hasn't had satisfactory results after a long time, I plan to put the nomination back into the unreviewed pool of nominations with no loss of seniority—that procedure has generally worked much better with older nominations, and this would be in the top five of unreviewed nominations in that case.

Please let me know your plans. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:51, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi again! When I'm finished reviewing the GA I'm currently working on, I'd be happy to pick up your new article if it hasn't been selected by another user. Ganesha811 (talk) 22:36, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

Question from Dradraj (21:11, 2 November 2021)

Hi! How do you CREATE a page? --Dradraj (talk) 21:11, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello @Dradraj: welcome to Wikipedia! You can create a page draft using the Article Wizard, which will then be reviewed by an experienced editor. However, it's not easy and it might be a couple of months before your page is reviewed. Creating a new page is one of the toughest things to do on Wikipedia, so I'd encourage you to start off with some simpler tasks. You can find suggestions for what to do at the Task Center. Happy editing! Ganesha811 (talk) 22:35, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

AfD discussion

Hello! I genuinely did mean that in a friendly way. My comment mostly came about seeing myself in your responses. I have a hard time not replying in AfDs (especially ones I’ve nominated), so don’t want others to get a hand slap for the same thing. I looked at some of the articles you’ve written, and you do good work! I love the Josh fight one. Keep up the good work, and I hope there’s no ill will if our paths cross again. Cheers! —Kbabej (talk) 23:58, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for explaining further - you were absolutely right, though. My first reaction was "I'm not bludgeoning!" And then I clicked the link and read the page, and realized I was 100% starting to bludgeon. I see now how easy it is to fall into it! Thanks for the compliment on the articles I've started. Definitely no ill will - happy editing! Ganesha811 (talk) 00:01, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! Have a great weekend! —Kbabej (talk) 00:04, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

Question from Islandb911 (23:28, 18 November 2021)

Hello, i want to make an update on an article. do you have any advice as to how i can proceed? thank you --Islandb911 (talk) 23:28, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Sure! What's the article in question? In general, don't be afraid to make changes - if you make a mistake, you or someone else can change it back really easily. If you add new information to an article, make sure it has a source cited. Welcome to Wikipedia, @Islandb911: happy editing! Keep asking questions whenever you'd like. ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:35, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Signpost crossword

Thank you for making the Signpost crossword! Fun things like that are always good for the project. Enterprisey (talk!) 00:37, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

I'm happy to - very glad people are enjoying them. :) I'll be making more, too, if I can think of good encyclopedia-related themes (the well of Wiki-terms may soon run dry). Any ideas? Ganesha811 (talk) 01:36, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello @เบรลล์พท์กิพร พุทธโกมาต: welcome to Wikipedia. I don't speak Thai, so I'm using Google Translate, but if I understand your post correctly, you want to create a Wikipedia page for a star of a Thai TV show? Creating a new page from scratch is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia. I would recommend you gain practice and experience first by finding simpler tasks at the WP:Task Center.
