Inquiry regarding Article Deletion Discussions

Hi Paste. Thank you for your welcome message to Wikipedia on my talk page, and for your inquiry about the TOS portion of my username. I was saddened to see that my very first article here was nominated for deletion just hours after it was created; and I honestly feel that the fellow who is advocating in favor of the deletion seems to be behaving in a less than good faith manner. In support of this statement, I would point out his use of the term "fancruft" which is acknowledged to be an insult by some and which I believe I disproved with statistics; his assessment that the subject of my article is notable for only one event, which again I believe I disproved in the debate discussion; and his recent unilateral mass deletion of a large section of my article (the Career section), claiming copyright violation. I did just re-write that section using my own, new language to document the various career accomplishments of the author. However, it occurs to me that user JzG could have taken a much kinder approach and requested a rephrasing of the section beforehand (which I would have been happy to comply with) instead of performing a unilateral mass deletion. His attitude really comes across to me as being overly hostile and not necessarily in good faith - as I would expect from individuals in senior positions or administrator positions at Wikipedia. My question is whether or not I need bother to expend my energies and pursue the deletion debate in good faith at all, and hope for a just decision, or whether, in your opinion, I might as well give up because user JzG is ultimately destined to just mass delete the entire article anyway - acting unilaterally in accordance with his own negative bias on the article? It seems to me that this fellow has failed to respond in a meaningful way to any of my good faith inquiries and has blatantly ignored the multiple relevant points I've raised regarding notability issues in the deletion discussion. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Michael Glaveys GAA, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ballinlough. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Carol Thomas

Hi Paste, thank you for your improvements on this page. As for the citations, the statements are made following discussion with Carol herself.

1) BOCM ladies - this was 1966, the women's game was largely not administered with scant documentation and non of it retained beyond the season in question. Further, sadly, most of the players are no longer with us therefore proof is almost impossible to give. If a citation is still required can you please help in how I should do this, or I will have top remove the statement. 2) 214 Wainwrights, National Three Peaks walk and Coast to Coast walk - Unfortunately, there are no registers or official independent records kept for these. Carol completed her 214th Wainwright in June 2015 (Catstye Cam), she undertook the National Three peaks in July 2014 and completed the west to east Coast to Coast route in May/June 1994 and the east to west Coast to Coast route in May/June 2015. The only verification for these would be her husband, who walked them with her, the personal photographs taken on routes/peaks or to provide a list of Bed and Breakfasts along the Coast to Coast route for each occasion, for the first occasion that would be 12 and the second 16. All of which can be provided and I have personally seen. If a citation is still required can you please help in how I should do this. Waking Ned (talk) 15:02, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi and thanks for responding. I can only really suggest that you take a look at WP:V as it is a cornerstone of Wikipedia that articles can verify exactly what they are saying. The criticism that has been put for Carol Thomas is that some of what has been written seemed 'essay like' and if it comes from a conversation with her as you say then that is not surprising. Paste Let’s have a chat. 15:24, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

Carol Thomas

Hi I am stuck here. Firstly, I must thank you for all your help, as a new user it has been invaluable. I have been through the article again, thanks for your improvements, and I hope I have maintained a more factual approach. I will keep revisiting the article until it meets requirements.

However, much of the early information re BOCM Ladies quite frankly cannot be retrieved. Put simply the people concerned are dead eg Flo Bilton, no written records are available, where do I go?

The information re her walking/trekking again are from personal records. All the stuff in Britain, no registers, official records exist except for her personal records which can be provided. The trekking company she uses are Exodus Travels, London with whom she has trekked with since 2007, but obviously they operate a strict client confidentiality approach. Again it is personal records which can also be provided. In both cases I can see no way I can evidence this on Wikipedia without uploading hundreds of photographs, with her face on them (which she has). Waking Ned (talk) 15:58, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

In both cases any help would be much appreciated if not, I will remove the statements, and accept that the article will be incomplete. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Waking Ned (talkcontribs) 15:39, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

  • My feeling would be to leave the article as is for now and see how it progresses and is edited by others. As we have discussed the references need improvement but also as you say that may prove problematic. What connection, if any, do you have with her as WP:COI may also be applicable? Paste Let’s have a chat. 16:22, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

Accurate edit summaries

Please be careful when writing edit summaries that you are accurate. In the article for The Great British Bake Off, you left the following edit summary:

Reverted to revision 746536353 by Drmargi (talk): Incorrect addition of material.

In actuality, what you did was revert to my last edit on the article, removing a series of edits by two IPs and restoring my edit, which was correct. This may not seem like a big deal, but should there be a dispute, your edit summary paints a completely erroneous picture of my actions, which matters given admins tend to read edit summaries, not refer to the substance of edits, when reviewing a sequence of edits. This is important in cases such as this article, where we have a repetitively disruptive IP restoring controversial edits. If you are going to use a tool such as Twinkle, please be more careful in the future. --Drmargi (talk) 17:24, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

Introducing copyvios

Please do not add material which may be a copyvio as you did in this edit [1]. The unreliable self-published source you added at the same time being the source of the possible copyvio. Best wishes.SovalValtos (talk) 21:17, 25 October 2016 (UTC)

It looks like you are a very experienced editor, so can we conclude your replacement of the text "During the Tudor era the downs were also in use and in particular Ditchling Beacon, which had been used as a beacon to warn of invasion in preceding centuries, was used again to warn Queen Elizabeth I of the Spanish Armada lumbering east along the English Channel" in the South Downs Way article with this edit [2] means that it is not a copyvio from [3] where there is near identical text?SovalValtos (talk) 19:11, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

Deletion of Walkover Technologies

Hi,

You have written that Walkover Technologies is a promotional page but in fact it is not. It is not trying to influence any audience or target others through it. Walkover is the parent company under which many products are developed. All these products have their own website and it is by the product's name that the customers know. The flagship product is MSG91 that is pretty well-known and it isn't even listed it on the Wikipedia page. Request you to reconsider

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:08, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer granted

Hello Paste. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as mark pages as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. — xaosflux Talk 02:35, 8 November 2016 (UTC)

New deal for page patrollers

Hi Paste,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:29, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review needs your help

Hi Paste,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

(Sent to all active AfC reviewers) MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:33, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Paste. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter

Hello Paste,

Breaking the back of the backlog
We now have 800 New Page Reviewers! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog. Now it's time for action.

Mid July to 01 Oct 2016

If each reviewer does only 10 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
Let's get that over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

Second set of eyes

Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work. Read about it at the new Monitoring the system section in the tutorial.

Getting the tools we need - 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey: Please vote

With some tweaks to their look, and some additional features, Page Curation and New Pages Feed could easily be the best tools for patrollers and reviewers. We've listed most of what what we need at the 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey. Voting starts on 28 November - please turn out to make our bid the Foundation's top priority. Please help also by improving or commenting on our Wishlist entry at the Community Wishlist Survey. Many other important user suggestions are listed at at Page Curation.

Guild of Copy Editors December 2016 News

Guild of Copy Editors December 2016 News

Hello everyone, and welcome to the December 2016 GOCE newsletter. We had an October newsletter all set to go, but it looks like we never pushed the button to deliver it, so this one contains a few months of updates. We have been busy and successful!

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: Nominations are open for election of Coordinators for the first half of 2017. Please visit the election page to nominate yourself or another editor, and then return after December 15 to vote. Thanks for participating!

September Drive: The September drive was fruitful. We set out to remove July through October 2015 from our backlog (an ambitious 269 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of oldest articles to just 83. We reduced our overall backlog by 97 articles, even with new copyedit tags being added to articles every day. We also handled 75% of the remaining Requests from August 2016. Overall, 19 editors recorded copy edits to 233 articles (over 378,000 words).

October Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 October; the theme was Requests, since the backlog was getting a bit long. Of the 16 editors who signed up, 10 editors completed 29 requests. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

November Drive: The November drive was a record-breaker! We set out to remove September through December 2015 from our backlog (239 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of old articles to just 66, eliminating the two oldest months! We reduced our overall backlog by 523 articles, to a new record low of 1,414 articles, even with new tags being added to articles every day, which means we removed copy-editing tags from over 800 articles. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from October 2016. Officially, 14 editors recorded copy edits to 200 articles (over 312,000 words), but over 600 articles, usually quick fixes and short articles, were not recorded on the drive page.

Housekeeping note: we do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your Watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdslk.

Greetings Recent Changes Patrollers!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about technical proposals related to Recent Changes Patrol in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

  1. Adjust number of entries and days at Last unpatrolled
  2. Editor-focused central editing dashboard
  3. "Hide trusted users" checkbox option on watchlists and related/recent changes (RC) pages
  4. Real-Time Recent Changes App for Android
  5. Shortcut for patrollers to last changes list

Further, there are more than 20 proposals related to Watchlists in general that you may be interested in reviewing. (and over 260 proposals in all, across many aspects of wikis)

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Note: You received this message because you have transcluded {{User wikipedia/RC Patrol}} (user box) on your user page. Since this message is "one-time-only" there is no opt out for future mailings.

Best regards, SteviethemanDelivered: 01:12, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Paste! I created an article for T.H. Baker and it's obvious that I'm close to the subject. How do I get someone to make the article more neutral? :) (Here's the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T.H._Baker) DavidGayson (talk) 11:27, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter No.2

Hello Paste,

A HUGE backlog

We now have 800 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.
