Membership Reconfirmation

Hello there! If you're receiving this message, it means that you are currently in the Participants category of The Office WikiProject. A message involving reconfirmation was included in the current newsletter, but it was a bit buried, and I wanted to make sure that everyone received notice of this so we can get as accurate of a count as we can. The WikiProject is currently trying to find how many users listed in the Participants section are active members, and if you have a spare moment later, it would be a big help if you noted your reconfirmation by simply signing your signature here. And if you're a non-member reading this, feel free to drop by and add your name to the reconfirmation category; you'll be added into the list once it's finished. Thanks, and have a great day! Arquijas. Vivo cerca, a 40 KM, me acercaré y haré fotos. Hasta pronto, --Cornava (talk) 12:02, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi could you help translate this article properly from Spanish wikipedia. The translation engine version is a shambles. Thanks ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:31, 20 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thats brilliant!!! Excellent work! Thanks for your help. I hope you don't mind if I come across any in the future to let you know. Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:57, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I didn't realise you were Spanish oriented on wikipedia, most of the great work I've seen from you has been on saints or Christianity related articles. Unfortunately we miss out on many fuller articles from countries such as France, Spain, Germany and Italy because those wikipedias are also big and the majority of the people from these countries work on developing the articles on their wikipedias not on english wikipedia so we end up with many stubs. Ideally we need a more efficient translation system to enable rapid translation of articles between the wikipedias and not leave it up to a small group to translate everytime. Best regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:21, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Excellent. I think I'm going to start to learn Spanish more proficiently. Where I can I think I'll begin to see if I can translate some articles using my dictionary. I have a fairly good basic knowledge of it. I started a few Mexican municipalities yesterday. It would be a good way of learning and improving wikipedia at same time. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:46, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wow you're awesome!! Thats the coolest award I've ever seen. I'll have to mount that on my bald head what da ya think? LOL!! Thanks! Yes I've begun sorting out Mexican municipalities. Brazil, South Africa and Malaysia are all on my list too. But hopefully my spanish will improve and I can develop some of the stubs on places/landmarks.people etc in Latin America. Yesterday I created Template:Chiapas and started a few like Acapetahua. There is a Mexican encyclopedia of municipios so any one of them cound be expanded anyway. Strangely German and Italian wikipedia have them before us!!! Many are missing from spanish wiki!! All the best and thanks for your great kindness ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:10, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I;ve made a start with Altamirano, Chiapas. I could probably expand it three fold using the info given. I;ll add the main towns and cities tomorrow. But probably the best thing is to add basics details and infoboxes to existing articles first and create the missing ones, then write the fuller articles after. Hola! Yes I was growing concerned that maybe I was putting too much pressure on you. I've been doing a lot of work myself earlier I translated Culture of El Salvador. I think I'm going to have a go at translating some of the spanish featured articles. The 1932 El Salvador peasant revolt is one of them and National Route 7 Argentina another I can think of off hand. Oh I just fixed the references on Eleutherius of Tournai. You can avoid listing the same source agian and again by indexing the notes under one. Hope this helps. Translation

edit

Hi thanks for that. Could you translate this though:

♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:02, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your're wonderful thanks. I have no problems with basic paragraphs or words that bear some resemblance to english. My fault at present is understanding the grammar and the way things are phrased in Spanish. Hopefully I will improve my knowledge of the language eventually. I'll let you get on with doing wonders to that Nicaraguan article. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:24, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Do you know any other notable spanish translators who do similar work to yourself? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:36, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

OK. I just wish I was equally as accomplished as you are with spanish as I could translate all of the featured articles from spanish wikipedia. I think however for myself it is best to start with paragraphs of information from various articles rather than 36kb featured articles in spanish!! I've just started La Guerra Gaucha which is an FA on spanish wiki. It is an epic Argentine film set during the Argentine War of Independence and is quite a novelty to have such a detailed article on an Argentine film. I've made a start on it was I was beguinning to struggle with the phrasing which didn't sound correct. I asked a few people to help me translate it including some Argentines I know from my previos work but I feel I am asking too much if I keep asking you one thing after the other. I'll begin with smaller chunks first I think as I can't handle articles like this by myself. WOuld you be interested in the coming weeks/months of translating some of the FA articles from Spanish wiki? With abit of work we could probably get them up to GA status in english if there are references. At times like this I wish we had several hundred Polylerus clones to help!!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:51, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes I'll stick to expanding the stubs to start class I think. I just expanded Ahuachapán. If I could get each of the municipalities in central America up to this sort of level and reference if possible this would make an enormous difference. I'll be developing Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras , Guatemala and Nicaragua in this way and balancing it with my work on film. Take care ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:48, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Are you still up for translating Chinandega? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:06, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Great - apparently the hotels and volcanoes sections were spanish copywrights anyway. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:49, 4 August 2008 (UTC) Hello amigo. The other day I added about 100 stubs on Category:Costa Rican politicians. Could you give a hand translating a few every now and then. Most of them are only shortish articles to translate and shouldn't take more than five minutes. Basically getting them up to Mauro Fernández Acuña sort of length. Best regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:46, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cool. Many of them seem to be 19th century politicians and the topic seems quite an interesting one. I personally thought "19th century Costa Rican politics" was another area of coverage wikipedia could do with indulging in! The colonial history of central america too is quite an attractive one. I think they should have infoboxes, what I'll do is see if I can upload further images to the commons of them. Many of the images will be in the public domain ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 15:12, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I;ve fixed most of the references. Its good work but you need to get out of the habit of leaving open url links without filling in your references properly. It is far better to cite the publisher or author of the work and date it published or found rather than expecting the reader to chase it up on external sites!! It just gives your work more credibility, the "icing on the cake". Try to use {{cite web. If you examine the article you'll get the hang of using it. There is also a cite book etc. Keep up the good work. ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 17:36, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

It is also important initially because if an article is developed by another editor to GA or by yourself at a later date, inevitably it will be expected that the references are properly filled out. This saves trouble later in chasing up initial sources and dates and maximises the amount of time that can go into writing the article to a higher quality itself. Best ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 17:51, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art

edit

First off, I apologize for the spam. You are receiving this message because you have indicated that you are in Southern California or interested in Southern California topics (either via category or WikiProject).

I would like to invite you to the Los Angeles edition of Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art, a photography scavenger hunt to be held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM. All photos are intended for use in Wikipedia articles or on Wikimedia Commons. There will be a prize available for the person who gets the most photos on the list.

If you don't like art, why not come just to meet your fellow Wikipedians. Apparently, we haven't had a meetup in this area since June 2006!

If you are interested in attending, please add your name to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art#Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Please make a note if you are traveling to the area (train or plane) and need transportation, which can probably be arranged via carpool, but we need time to coordinate. Lodging is as of right now out of scope, but we could discuss that if enough people are interested.

Thank you and I hope to see you there! howcheng {chat} 00:19, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of South from Granada (book)

edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article South from Granada (book), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Fails WP:N; credits minor and few

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. coucou.

Hey buddy. Can you translate this? Its a pretty important article on French cuisine. Dr. Blofeld White cat 11:28, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

HI. Nope I am feeling about as unenthusiastic about wikipedia as I can possibly feel at the moment. Sometimes it seems we are surrounded by virtually all kids or people interested in retaining articles on topics they are interested in evne if they have little real encyclopedic value, the decent editors like us interested in real content seem to be few. The amount of fan cruft we have on crappy fictional manga, anime and childrens series is just appalling and when you ry to delete them forces turn up to vote "keep" that keep their fancruft and so the "encyclopedia" which is hardly that continues to contain thousands of lists of these invented characters and polluting this website. We have 2500 + articles on anime series yet we have only a handful of articles on Churches in Egypt for example. Really sad state. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:54, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Its frightening how many kids are on here though, The amount we have on lists of fiction which mean absolutely nothing to anybody other than fans of the series does degrade the reputation of this site in my view. If they read an utterly atrocious article on List of evil Power Rangers which is unsourced and clearly written by a thirteen year old why would they trust an article on actual encyclopedia real world topics which is what an encyclopedia is supposed to be about? At the end of the day I want a decent encyclopedia of the highest quality and coverage of "real" topics but the fact that the majority vote to keep these pieces of crap on made up geeky worlds really makes me wonder how this can be possible. I try to ignore it but it is stil a huge problem. I'm not the only one who feels this way. File:Size of English Wikipedia broken down.png pretty much sums it up exactly. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:12, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Well I do have a strange aversion to Japanese manga and anima. In fact it is one of my pet hates. Whenever I come across anything related I start getting all irritated and even angry and start sweating LOL its like an allergy or something. Then you see Category:Manga series full with endless articles and then you visit Category:Churches in Alexandria it makes me even more frustrated how many editors are dedicated to building articles about a bunch of fictional characters made by the Japanese. It irritated me as a kid too, II remember when I was about 14 I found a tamagochi and smashed it against a wall in disgust LOL, maybe its Japanese youth culture in general as the articles on Japanese J-pop on 4'10" inch pop stars from Japan with pink album colours have a similar effect. I'm normally very calm and happy but there is something about that whole thing which gets me really wound up, I don't know why. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:53, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

French article looks great. Perhaps we can find some references and nominate it for a DYK. the subject seems too notable to let it pass. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:29, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ah. Can you find some references probably in French,? Then we can co-nominate it as a DYK. Ugh check out Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers episodes now. This is why the encyclopedia allows pages like this to exist as clearly wikipedia means something very different to a lot of people than it does to me. You are now a Reviewer

edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 23:15, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Montevideo

Hello old friend! How are you? I've begun a big translation of Montevideo the capital city of Uruguay at Wikipedia:WikiProject Uruguay/Montevideo. Can you help me translate it? It may take a week to fully translate or longer and fully write. It doesn't need to be done immediately and can be gradual... Once the translation is done it can further be expanded, there must be a wealth of sources on it. But if you look at the current state of it the only decent part of it is the history and even that needs improving. And it a major South American capital city.... I'd be very grateful if you could help out. I'll also invite a few more Spanish translators to help so between us we ought to be able to accomplish it..♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:39, 15 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello Polylerus. Just a courtesy notification I'm reverting your recent minor change to Green City, Missouri. Putting the link brackets around the Quincy, Missouri & Pacific railroad will only lead to long-term red ink / busted link on the Wiki. File permission problem with File:GuitarheroonTV.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:GuitarheroonTV.jpg, which you've sourced to (screenshot). I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:34, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello. You previously voted in the 2006 AfD for Suri Cruise. At the time, Suri was less than 10 days old, and the ultimate verdict was to turn the article into a redirect to her mother's page.

Since then, Suri has become much more notable in her own right as a toddler fashion icon, with over 13 million hits on google image search. After getting an administrator to lift the protection on the redirect, I recently restored the article as a stub, but an editor who believes that "6 year olds are not inherently notable" has again requested deletion.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Bulwersator (talk) 22:17, 11 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Islomania is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Islomania until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. Speedy deletion nomination of File:Rheitalunarmap3.JPG

edit

A tag has been placed on File:Rheitalunarmap3.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Speedy deletion nomination of Anchoress (band)

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Anchoress (band) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Tanausu.JPG)

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Tanausu.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:04, 15 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Non-free rationale for File:Torreswithortizillustrations.JPG

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Torreswithortizillustrations.JPG. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Gervasius and Protasius (disambiguation)

File source problem with File:MyrtoanSea2.JPG

edit

Thank you for uploading File:MyrtoanSea2.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Edits at Hurlbat

edit

Wow, amazing to see you still editing 8 years later! Usually when I cleanup an old article, the originator is long-gone. In any case, the article hurlbat appeared to be about a modern interpretation of the device (as a thin throwing-axe) which does not seem supported by any other secondary or tertiary reference I could find on GoogleBooks, other than an implicit mention in a recent book on martial arts. Accordingly I've noted the disparity in the article, and given some examples of past definitions of the weapon. If you have anything to add, that'd be appreciated, but the article seems to have lingered unsourced for quite some time. MatthewVanitas (talk) 03:25, 20 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Who Murdered Chaucer?

edit

The article Who Murdered Chaucer? has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

After nine years, this subject offers no credential of notability. The author is not a reputable Chaucerian analyst. The article remains as little more than an advertisement for the book, while providing no encyclopedic information about it. Since the title is listed in an article on the author, there seems little point in keeping the present article.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. LA edit-a-thons on February 14, 17, and 21

edit
Redondo Loves Wikipedia (2/14), Wik-Ed Women (2/17), and Unforgetting LA at the Getty (2/21)!

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

The LA Wikipedia community has three events in mid-February -- please consider attending!

First, we have a Valentine's Day edit-a-thon appropriately named Redondo Loves Wikipedia, which will take place at the Redondo Beach Public Library from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, February 14. Join library staff, the Redondo Beach Historical Society, and others to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of Redondo Beach!

Second, we have a Wik-Ed Women editing session on Tuesday, February 17 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists.

Third, we have an Unforgetting LA event put on by East of Borneo in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Come help improve Wikipedia's coverage of LA design and architecture, and have an awesome free day at the museum -- parking will be validated for edit-a-thon participants! If you'd like to use particular books from GRI's great collection, be sure to email before 2/13 (instructions at event page).

And be sure to check out our main meetup page, because we already have three SoCal events scheduled for early March!

I hope to see you there! Calliopejen1 (talk) - via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:58, 5 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Language-population update project

edit

Hi. The 18th edition of Ethnologue just came out, and if we divide up our language articles among us, it won't take long to update them. I would appreciate it if you could help out, even if it's just a few articles (5,000 articles is a lot for just me), but I won't be insulted if you delete this request.

A largely complete list of articles to be updated is at Category:Language articles citing Ethnologue 17. The priority articles are in Category:Language articles with old Ethnologue 17 speaker data. These are the 10% that have population figures at least 25 years old.

Probably 90% of the time, Ethnologue has not changed their figures between the 17th and 18th editions, so all we need to do is change "e17" to "e18" in the reference (ref) field of the language info box. That will change the citation for the artcle to the current edition. Please put the data in the proper fields, or the info box will flag it as needing editorial review. The other relevant fields are "speakers" (the number of native speakers in all countries), "date" (the date of the reference or census that Ethnologue uses, not the date of Ethnologue!), and sometimes "speakers2". Our convention has been to enter e.g. "1990 census" when a census is used, as other data can be much older than the publication date. Sometimes a citation elsewhere in the article depends on the e17 entry, in which case you will need to change "name=e17" to "name=e18" in the reference tag (assuming the 18th edition still supports the cited claim).

Remember, we want the *total* number of native speakers, which is often not the first figure given by Ethnologue. Sometimes the data is too incompatible to add together (e.g. a figure from the 1950s for one country, and a figure from 2006 for another), in which case it should be presented that way. That's one use for the "speakers2" field. If you're not sure, just ask, or skip that article.

Data should not be displayed with more than two, or at most three, significant figures. Sometimes it should be rounded off to just one significant figure, e.g. when some of the component data used by Ethnologue has been approximated with one figure (200,000, 3 million, etc.) and the other data has greater precision. For example, a figure of 200,000 for one country and 4,230 for another is really just 200,000 in total, as the 4,230 is within the margin of rounding off in the 200,000. If you want to retain the spurious precision of the number in Ethnologue, you might want to use the {{sigfig}} template. (First parameter in this template is for the data, second is for the number of figures to round it off to.)

Dates will often need to be a range of all the country data in the Ethnologue article. When entering the date range, I often ignore dates from countries that have only a few percent of the population, as often 10% or so of the population isn't even separately listed by Ethnologue and so is undated anyway.

If Ethnologue does not provide a date for the bulk of the population, just enter "no date" in the date field. But if the population figure is undated, and hasn't changed between the 17th & 18th editions of Ethnologue, please leave the ref field set to "e17", and maybe add a comment to keep it so that other editors don't change it. In cases like this, the edition of Ethnologue that the data first appeared in may be our only indication of how old it is. We still cite the 14th edition in a couple dozen articles, so our readers can see that the data is getting old.

The articles in the categories linked above are over 90% of the job. There are probably also articles that do not currently cite Ethnologue, but which we might want to update with the 18th edition. I'll need to generate another category to capture those, probably after most of the Ethnologue 17 citations are taken care of.

Jump in at the WP:LANG talk page if you have any comments or concerns. Thanks for any help you can give!

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Tortosa, Spain.jpg

edit

A tag has been placed on File:Tortosa, Spain.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Speedy deletion nomination of Gervasius and Protasius (disambiguation)

edit

A tag has been placed on Gervasius and Protasius (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
  • disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

...he once served as an expert witness in a murder trial as a specialist in family names.

According to the edit history, this is your creation. I was wondering where you happened upon this information, and whether you might be able to shed any more light on the subject or point me in the direction of sources that could?

All best,

Proposed deletion of Joe Carollo

edit

The article Joe Carollo has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp/dated}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited The North Wind and the Sun, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Boreas (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Church of Saint James Intercisus moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, Church of Saint James Intercisus, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Wise County, Texas, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Native Americans. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

First Carlist War sources

edit

Hi! I've been working on a massive re-writing of the article on the First Carlist War (you can see current progress in my sandbox. I saw you've created many of the articles on battles of this conflict and I was wondering which ones you'd recommend (especially for detailed accounts of battles). I'd especially appreciate those I can find online or still purchasable. Hope you've had a restful New Year so far. Santacruz Please ping me! 23:52, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

LA to FA 2022

Dear Polylerus,

You're invited to a zoom call, taking place on February 11, with the goal of improving the article on Los Angeles to Featured article status! I often find it daunting to approach the Big Subjects on my own—so if you, like me, want a time to sit down with fellow dedicated editors and tackle something important and complex, this is the zoom for you! I, unfortunately, have no way to transmit snacks over zoom; but I trust you to exercise good judgement and discretion in selecting snacks of your own. Hope to see you there—if you're interested, add your name here!

Orphaned non-free image File:Tanausu.JPG

Thanks for uploading File:Tanausu.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Proposed deletion of Jolly Jumper

edit

The article Jolly Jumper has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline requirement nor the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (fiction) supplementary essay. WP:BEFORE did not reveal any significant coverage on Gnews, Gbooks or Gscholar. French article is longer but also underreferenced. I suggest redirecting this to Lucky Luke in the spirit of WP:PRESERVE, preserving interwikis. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page here in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back through WP:ECHO or by leaving a note at User talk:Piotrus. Thank you
