Madras Presidency

edit

I understand your requirement. However, it will take some time, since I will have to peruse books in my possession in great detail to obtain the information you seek. Give me some time and I shall try to get what I can.

In the meantime, I have provided details about the expansion of the Madras Presidency, almost district-by-district. That should help fill up the year of incorporation column in the table. Voltigeur (talk) 19:02, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have added the dates of incorporation of the districts you had included in the table. However, I observe that two districts have not been listed, namely - Coimbatore and Guntur. Further, Madras City constituted a separate administrative division within the Presidency; I leave it to your discretion whether you wish to include it as such or as the capital. Lastly, it seems Arcot was incorporated as such before being split into North and South. Therefore, it may be advisable to either incorporate one entry for Arcot as well, or remove the entries for East and West Godavari districts.

One point I wish to bring to your attention is that, in some cases, I have provided more than one year of incorporation. This is on account of the fact that those districts were incorporated piecemeal, at different points of time, from different rulers - for instance, Madura from Tippoo, once, and from the Nawab of Arcot, on two separate occasions; similarly, Kistna from the Mughal Emperor and later from the Nizam. I leave it to you to clear up as you wish to. Should you require any clarification, please let me know. Voltigeur (talk) 19:43, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tourism in Orissa

edit

OK I've started Arts of Orissa too. You could probably create the wildlife article using a lot of existing material particularly on the lake article. I won't start that yet though. Should be a decent start now. Dr. Blofeld White cat 20:56, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi

edit

Thanks. Normally the arbitrators usually don't reply to any complaint sent to them (<10%), or only one guy cares and nothing happens, so if they're bothered investigating me, they're probably looking for any old excuse to ban me. So I guess I'll be KOed any moment now, but I'm not going to run away, as I haven't done anything wrong. I should probably play small target and freeloading politics unless people want to go and demonstrate for me each week.... YellowMonkey (cricket calendar poll!) 08:06, 7 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

You should run for admin. Too many trolls on the subcontinent. Nishkid aside, the other subcontinental-watching admins won't bite the usual lot. They just expect others to block idiots for them. also see India and state terrorism YellowMonkey (cricket calendar poll!) 08:29, 7 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I need time. I expect a posting and could be put up in any corner of the country. It would not serve any purpose if I get elected admin and have no access to the internet. We'll have it by early May if possible.-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 06:28, 9 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nice baby. Yours? I've got another DYK in the name of Blanca Olmedo. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:37, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

You know thats exactly why I don't bother with DYK myself. I can't be bothered to list it let alone answer the increasingly difficult questions and make corrections. Officially I only have 30 DYKs but we both know its more like 3030 start class articles, I just haven't the time to list or make sure everyone meets criteria. I thank you for the link you had provided, although I have not been able to peruse it thoroughly. I shall certainly let you know, if anything interesting crops up.

Speaking of other matters, I still have not been able to turn up anything worthwhile concerning the population data of the Presidency. I shall see what can be done.

Lastly, I have a request to make. Some time ago, I came to know that there exists a group of the Vadama known as the Swarnakesikas. Although I know next to nothing about this group, except that they continue to exist, I am intrigued given the implications the meaning of their name (golden-haired ones) could have. Should you be able to uncover any details do let me know. Voltigeur (talk) 18:11, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the information. I shall look into the Vadagalai/Thenkalai details. I did happen to see that you had expanded the list of Vadama; have you been able to find any references? If so, please do let me know.

Secondly, I know for certain that Lady Raman, Sir C. V.'s wife was my great-grandfather's cousin. Given the conservatism that prevailed a century ago, I am fairly certain the Sir C. V. Raman was also Vadama. Is his inclusion advisable?

Third, I am considering expanding the Brahacharanam article along the lines of the Vadama. References are fewer to come by, but a degree of information is available. I await your opinion. Voltigeur (talk) 17:18, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Very well; Harishpsubramaniam is the one I had a heated discussion with concerning Vadama origins. I think he is going by a different user-name now, which you can find in the Vadama talk-page. As far as the expansion of the Brahacharanam page is concerned, I would like to know your opinion, since information is available although not readily referable. Voltigeur (talk) 17:34, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have no idea about U. V. Swaminatha Iyer. But I remember it being remarked once, back home that actor Jaishankar is a Vadama. Voltigeur (talk) 17:44, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have had a look at the info-box, and a nice job it is I must say, although a picture more would look good. Your retirement will be a great loss I am sure, but I do hope that you will keep looking in, just as I do, from month to month.

As for Ramayyan Dalawa, since my family on my mother's side hails from Nagercoil, which was Travancore's capital in the Dalawai's period, I have heard it often said that he was a Vadama. Further corroboration I think may be had from the fact that one of the streets in Vadiveeswaram, our ancestral agraharam, is called Dalawa Theru. I think I may remark here that Vadiveeswaram was a predominantly Vadama agraharam once upon a time, though it no longer merits even the name. I had refrained from including his name until I was able to locate a reference, which I have provided. Voltigeur (talk) 17:59, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I am sorry to be unable to give you an assurance, since most of what I can contribute is in history, religious customs and ethnology as far as these topics are concerned. From a quick search I undertook on the internet, I find that the article will have to be written keeping Saiva Siddhantha and Sangam Tamil in mind, and I really do not know whether I am up to the task. While starting the articles will be difficult for me, I could assist you with information, if you require any, say on the political and religious milieu in the Tamil Kingdoms in their period. Critique

edit

Hi Ravichandar84! Would you like to offer a broad critique of History of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), which I've been ignoring lately. You can do so on the article talk page. A paragraph or two. Not the details, but the big picture. I'm hoping it will inspire me to get my ass in gear and attend to the article, add the footnotes etc. I mean I haven't even copyedited it in a long time. Shameful. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 23:27, 20 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi from John Hill

edit

Thank you for your concern and sorry I have taken so long to reply to your query about me. Unfortunately, I have not been too well, having almost constant, and sometimes very severe, back pain and difficulty in getting around. I can manage around the house - but anything over 50-100 metres is too much and my poor wife, Jo, is having to do almost all the chores around our home as I am really limited in what I can do. Also, I am pretty constantly on codeine and other drugs. Have been to see my GP and a surgeon about possible operations to my back but the picture is gloomy - especially as my spine is riddled with osteoporosis (which means it is very brittle) and I have several discs in different regions of my back which are damaged and it is difficult to say which most urgently need attention. I am due to see a neurosurgeon soon - but I don't expect he will recommend surgery unless it is necessary and likely to prevent further damage. Fortunately I can usually sit up in bed with my laptop fairly comfortably for several hours each day and I have been working as quickly as possible to get my first book ready for publication. I am getting close now and am beginning to feel really excited! By the time I do this work, though, I really have to lie down and so I am making many fewer contributions to the Wikipedia these days.

I notice you are "retiring" from the Wikipedia - but I hope you don't give up on it altogether.

I send you my best wishes and hopes thagt whatever you do will be successful and you will find happiness and fulfillment in your life.

All best wishes,

John Hill (talk) 23:44, 29 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
