Question from BlueshiftMonsoon (23:35, 9 September 2023)
Hi! I just started editing, and I’ve got a couple questions about sources for the Michael Bergmann article.
First, I was was looking for sources for the Style section and it turns out the entire thing is taken pretty much verbatim from Bergmann’s own website, which seems like a copyright violation. If so, what’s the best way to deal with it?
I was also looking for sources to confirm some of the film festival awards in the Works section, and the only sources I could find were Bergmann’s personal site and the IMDb page for the festival. (I tried to go to the festival’s website directly but for whatever reason it’s not loading for me.) I saw IMDb and self-published sites are both generally considered unreliable, so what should I do in the absence of other sources?
Thanks for taking the time to help, and I’d also love to hear any general recommendations/advice you have for starting out! --BlueshiftMonsoon (talk) 23:35, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi there, BlueshiftMonsoon! Couple things.
- First, if there is a copyright violation, you can request revision deletion by tagging the article under RD1 with Template:Copyvio-revdel and following the procedures there. However, I'm not seeing any close paraphrasing or copyright violation per Copyvio detector, so if it isn't close paraphrasing or copying-and-pasting or anything like that then it's not a copyright violation, so I wouldn't tag that page for revision deletion.
- Second, if there's no reliable sources for the information/content then I would remove the unsourced paragraph due to original research and related concerns. BTW, do you have the festival website? I might try to find information and see if that source is reliable and has enough significant coverage of the subject to be used on that article (if it loads). Happy editing! Tails Wx 01:58, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
- I was looking specifically at the About page on Bergmann’s website – I did a few edits to the article before I started looking into the sources, but it’s still pretty much identical. When I put it directly into Copyvio Detector it says it can’t find any text on the page, so maybe there’s some weird formatting or something that stopped it from showing up in the general search?
- Here’s the New York Independent Film and Video Festival website. It looks like it’s more commonly called the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. If you can't find any good information, I can delete the paragraph (and I'll probably be checking the rest of the article anyway, since it looks like there might be more information without reliable sources). Thanks for the info! BlueshiftMonsoon (talk) 20:15, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi again, BlueshiftMonsoon! I've taken a closer look and yes, almost the entire section is a copyright violation. I've deleted the section and its text and listed the page at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2023 September 10. And the website you've linked did not load; so it's probably a dead link or something. And the whole article looks like it needs work, good work so far! Wish ya luck in improving it, and although that page is under investigation, this will not stop you from editing. Happy editing! Tails Wx 21:04, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

Tech News: 2023-37
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- ORES, the revision evaluation service, is now using a new open-source infrastructure on all wikis except for English Wikipedia and Wikidata. These two will follow this week. If you notice any unusual results from the Recent Changes filters that are related to ORES (for example, "Contribution quality predictions" and "User intent predictions"), please report them. [1]
- When you are logged in on one Wikimedia wiki and visit a different Wikimedia wiki, the system tries to log you in there automatically. This has been unreliable for a long time. You can now visit the login page to make the system try extra hard. If you feel that made logging in better or worse than it used to be, your feedback is appreciated. [2]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 September. It will be on all wikis from 14 September (calendar).
- The Technical Decision-Making Forum Retrospective team invites anyone involved in the technical field of Wikimedia projects to signup to and join one of their listening sessions on 13 September. Another date will be scheduled later. The goal is to improve the technical decision-making processes.
- As part of the changes for the Better diff handling of paragraph splits wishlist proposal, the inline switch widget in diff pages is being rolled out this week to all wikis. The inline switch will allow viewers to toggle between a unified inline or two-column diff wikitext format. [3]
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 20 September. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [4]
- The Enterprise API is launching a new feature called "breaking news". Currently in BETA, this attempts to identify likely "newsworthy" topics as they are currently being written about in any Wikipedia. Your help is requested to improve the accuracy of its detection model, especially on smaller language editions, by recommending templates or identifiable editing patterns. See more information at the documentation page on MediaWiki or the FAQ on Meta.

Hello
I wanted to ask if you could create a sandbox for me? I am asking because I am interested in creating an article and would like to start by using a sandbox, and it would obviously be harder to do that in the community sandbox since numerous others would be editing over me. Plus, I don't want to rush into AFC right away, since that hasn't worked well with me in the past. 47.227.95.73 (talk) 21:47, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from Pranay Chopde (07:16, 21 September 2023)
Hello sir....how can i prevent my article from deletion --Pranay Chopde (talk) 07:16, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
- Well, does your article, Pawar/Bhoyar, meet notability guidelines? I see there's a AfD discussion going on, so you really can't prevent your article from deletion unless notability is established with reliable sources. You cannot remove the AfD tag on the article either. And, that article has Wikipedia sources so that can't be used a reliable source per WP:CIRCULAR. Tails Wx 13:19, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
New pages patrol newsletter
Hello Tails Wx,
Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!
October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.
PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.
Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.
Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Question from ApexTriology (11:06, 25 September 2023)
Hi, I'm new user and decided to start editing Wikipedia. Basically I want to upload pictures of screenshorts of videogames in Windows PC. So, how does it work? --ApexTriology (talk) 11:06, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, @ApexTriology! See Wikipedia:Uploading images. So basically, if the image is public domain or has a free license, it can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. If it is a non-free licensed image, then it can be uploaded to Wikipedia. There's also a Copyright policy on uploading images as well. So, regarding the screenshots of video games on a PC, I'm pretty sure they're copyrighted and aren't allowed to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia. Happy editing! Question from Wre91827 (15:51, 14 October 2023)
I want to edit the specifications section for the Rolls Royce Dart turboprop engine (RDa.7) such as:
Under Type change "Turboprop" to "Single-Shaft Turboprop"
under components add the following line just above "Fuel Type":
Reduction Gear: 2 stage, final ratio 0.093:1
I have checked this informmation from this reference: https://www.easa.europa.eu/sites/default/files/dfu/EASA-TCDS-E.065_Rolls--Royce_Deutschland_Dart_series_engines-01-09122008.pdf
I would be happy to do such edits myself but this is my first time editing so would appreciate some advice. --Wre91827 (talk) 15:51, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hiya, @Wre91827! As long as the source is reliable and verifies the information edited added, it should be fine (with the reference.) Tails Wx 18:26, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. I do not see a row in the template for the type of gear nor its ratio? I do not see where I should put the link to my reference document? Also I suppose the title of the reference should be the title of the data sheet:
- European Aviation Safety Agency TYPE-CERTIFICATE DATA SHEET followed by the URL
- Is that correct? I don't see how to add this to the notes. Wre91827 (talk) 21:53, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hmm. I don't see a row in the template for the type of gear either. Your best bet is to ask Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aircraft since the template's hidden note suggests to ask questions and clarification there.
- For the reference, you can use Template:Cite web for sourcing, and the code follows:
<ref>{{cite web| url = | title = | last = | first = | date = | website = | publisher = | access-date = | quote = }}</ref>

You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, September 2023 northeastern U.S. floods), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed.
