  • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
  • Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.

  Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
  • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
  • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
  • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

DYK for Wheels Up

On 6 November 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Wheels Up, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Wheels Up. Brunson

Vandalism? Really? I just used the links which are used on most articles about basketball players, the team name and not one specific season link. And you template me with vandalism? Sorry, but you can't be serious... I'm not a newbie, so you could have just discussed it with me. (Sorry if it "sounds" rude) Kante4 (talk) 22:53, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

No response? Don't get me wrong but i would like to clarify the issue. Kante4 (talk) 09:31, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
The reason to have a link in an article is because the reader can find further detail about the topic at the link destination. For sports biographies, there has been no consensus on whether to use team season articles or just team articles. This lack of consensus to me is just the lazy way out. If you want to tell me that a player did such and such against a team, he did it against the players on that team in that season. Brunson did not debut against the Phoenix Suns, he debuted against the 2018–19 Phoenix Suns season. The former is an article about the history of the franchise with content that has captions about the Kevin Johnson, Charles Barkley and Steve Nash eras. None of those guys has anything to do with Brunson's debut. Brunson debuted against the 2018–19 Phoenix Suns season coached by Igor Kokoškov and a team composed of these guys. Why not send the reader to the link about the subject?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 22:57, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
I understand you but i think this needs wider discussion (WP:NBA), else readers think a team is linked over and over again. Still, why did you template me and acused me of vandalism? Kante4 (talk) 16:11, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
I think we have tried to have this discussion in the past, to no consensus. I am open to revisiting this. I have not had any problem with these links in a while. I may have been rash in tagging you.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 00:13, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
I guess there should be a discussion, as i have only seen you doing this. And yeah, no "may", you were wrong tagging me, but it's all good. Kante4 (talk) 11:33, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Kante4, I don't see the confusion. If I am reading the 20XX-YY sesaon, the Suns would refer to the 20XX-YY Suns. The information about who he played against is only at the team-season article. No matter who is doing it another way, he did not debut against Nash, Johnson and Barkley. The prior discussion may have been at WP:NBA, WP:BBALL or WP:CBBALL. It was no consensus. I am not hearing your opionion. Do you feel that the he debuted against the Phoenix Suns or the 2018–19 Phoenix Suns? Feel free to open a discussion at one of those pages. You can probably ask around for the prior discussion.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:04, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
BTW, I meant open at one of the project pages above not a talk of either Phoenix Suns article.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 17:50, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
I knew what you meant. Maybe later on, it was more about the vandalism error from your side. Kante4 (talk) 21:04, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, TonyTheTiger. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Cool Air

A tag has been placed on Template:Cool Air requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. --woodensuperman 10:02, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Odd MOS question

Hi Tony, I have an odd MOS question and no idea where to go for the answers. I've run across a user who appears to be using emoticons as ref names, as per this diff. They show up in several other articles the user has edited, including Sadid-1. Is this a quirk of my browser (Amazon Silk, based on Android Chrome)? Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 03:25, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

I have unreviewed a page you curated

Thanks for reviewing David Long (American football), TonyTheTiger.

Unfortunately Barkeep49 has just gone over this page again and unreviewed it. Their note is:

Tony - I don't think this article meets the SNG for either professional or amateur atheletes. I am marking unreviewed so another editor can look at it without bias.

To reply, leave a comment on Barkeep49's talk page.

  • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".

  Miscellaneous

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Thanks for creating David Long (American football).

I have just reviewed the page, as a part of our page curation process.

If a bit more prose could be added about his college career on the gridiron, that would be great, otherwise the page looks fine.

To reply, leave a comment here and ping me.
