Working on this at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Qwerfjkl (bot) 8. ― Qwerfjkltalk 07:17, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@John M Wolfson, I know this is very late, but the task is, inasmuch as it can be automated, complete. There are a under 200 pages listed at User:Qwerfjkl/UScounties that could not be automatically. If you find any pages not listed on that page that still have wikitable markup, the bot may be able to process it (might not be worth it unless there are a large number). ― Qwerfjkltalk 17:21, 31 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Offeror: Stanton By Your Man (talk)
  • Date offered: 13:11, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Request: Currently, Wikipedia has no article about the Stanton Foundation, the over $200-million offspring of the Ruth and Frank Stanton Fund. Please create a suitable "Start" article about the foundation.
  • Reward: $5 for an appropriate 3- to 5-sentence lede, plus $3 per reliably-sourced sentence of follow-up detail regarding this topic, up to $21.
  • Limit on rewards: Multiple recipients are eligible, but maximum payout will be $26. No rewards will be paid if the article is deleted or merged to Frank Stanton (executive) within 30 days of its creation.
  • Expired: July 4, 2014
  • I would move this request to "Expired requests" since it expired yesterday, but it appears that it was fulfilled. I emailed Stanton By Your Man on how he was going to carry out the reward but I did not get a response from him. I'm not sure what to do. GamerPro64 05:41, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to quickly point out that my e-mail inbox lacks any notification of being contacted by you, GamerPro64; but regardless, I appreciate this reminder that the offer has expired. By my reckoning, User:Eddymason is entitled to $5 for starting an appropriate 3- to 5-sentence lede, plus $9 for three additional reliably-sourced sentences of follow-up detail. I then calculate that User:The Devil's Advocate is entitled to $12 for adding approximately four additional sentences, although it is a little difficult to determine exactly because of much over-writing of Eddymason's content. This would sum to $26, which was the maximum payout. I will also note that User:Geraldshields11 added a heavy dose of incorrect information, attributing the Stanton Foundation (tax EIN number 133598005) to a doppelganger namesake in Jackson, Michigan, which has nothing to do with the Ruth and Frank Stanton body. If it is not too much trouble, I would ask that this notice (which I've now marked "Expired") stay in place until payments can be authenticated. - Stanton By Your Man (talk) 12:23, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That is entirely possible. However, with Eddymason accounting first for $14 of the maximum $26, there was only $12 remaining for the additional sentences, anyway. I understand from my financial assistant that the two beneficiaries from this request have been paid via PayPal, so it can be moved to "Expired". Also, just to play devil's advocate for a moment, it may be appropriate to point out here that The Devil's Advocate seems to have been in violation of the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use, which specify:
"...with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. You must make that disclosure in at least one of the following ways:
a statement on your user page,
a statement on the talk page accompanying any paid contributions, or
a statement in the edit summary accompanying any paid contributions."
Eddymason's edits predated the Wikimedia Foundation's new Terms of Use which focus on paid editing, so that is why I am only mentioning The Devil's Advocate. It seems that a more explicit reminder of the Wikimedia Foundation Terms of Use should be placed on this Reward Board page. I don't feel like a long-enough contributor in good standing to have the authority to make substantial changes to the preamble on this page. - Stanton By Your Man (talk) 12:46, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted my edits. Geraldshields11 (talk) 14:01, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Offeror: Stanton By Your Man (talk)
  • Date offered: 13:11, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Request: Currently, Wikipedia's biography of Mr. Stanton contains no mention of his involvement in setting up anti-Communist surveillance at CBS in the early 1950's and the quiet blacklisting of certain actors and directors. It is a blemish on his record that he later (softly) regretted, or explained that he felt forced to do in order to keep CBS advertisers happy. It's an important enough event that it belongs (fully and reliably documented) in his Wikipedia biography.
  • Reward: $3 per reliably-sourced sentence regarding this topic, up to $15.
  • Limit on rewards: Multiple recipients are eligible, but maximum payout will be $15.
  • Expires: July 4, 2014
Note: it appears that User:Scortato has fulfilled this Reward Board request, and so payment of $15 will be processed soon for Scortato. - Stanton By Your Man (talk) 03:32, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes that works for the small size and captures the idea. The request is for the complete set. Chris Troutman (talk) 07:03, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't seen anyone make a complete set for the India ones, and felt like making some more ribbons, today. Are these suitable? • Offeror: SB Johnny on behalf of The Wikipediocracy Fund
  • Date offered: 15 April 2013
  • Request: English Wikipedia now has a new List article about the various Wikipedia controversies that have taken place over the years. The List is organized chronologically, by the date when the controversy either happened or became notably covered in reliable sources. We wish to see the List expanded with additional bullet points, where each bullet point is an independent event, and the editor must write at least 50 words about the event, and properly reference at least one credible, reliable source to verify the event and demonstrate its notability. Candidates for this prize will be registered Wikipedia user accounts whose entries are submitted under just one account (no use of multiple accounts). The judges will disqualify any added bullet points that fail to meet the 50-word minimum, or that insufficiently document the content with legitimate reliable sourcing. The judges will also disqualify any user who attempts to "game" the challenge (such as: duplicating entries on the same controversy; deleting the work of others and trying to re-add it as his/her own; plagiarizing other sources; etc.). Note that some Wikipedia articles already have a "Wikipedia controversy" section. Adding these to the new List are fair game, but the edit summary must clearly indicate that the content was based on material already in Wikipedia, not newly-generated content. Also, if you enter copied material that was covered only in a non-English Wikipedia, your edit summary must clearly indicate that your content was based on material translated from another Wikipedia, not newly-generated content.
  • Reward: Every qualifying contributor to the List will receive a coveted Internet Barnstar. The contributor adding the second-most qualifying bullet points will receive $75 (USD) from The Wikipediocracy Fund. The contributor who adds the most qualifying bullet points will receive $150 (USD) from The Wikipediocracy Fund, along with the Oddball Barnstar. Cash awards may be received via check or PayPal (to recipients who are willing to disclose their identity to Wikipediocracy judges), or the awards may be donated to a non-profit humanitarian charity of choice.
  • Limit on rewards: No limit on Internet Barnstars. Limit of two (2) cash awards.
  • Expires: 31 May 2013. Judges will issue all the awards before 15 June 2013.

Free copy of Civilization V for an FA

edit
This contest is now over. The free copy of Civilization V was won by Futuretrillionaire for bringing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to Featured Article status.
Do you want a free copy of Civilization 5?

As part of a Steam pre-order deal for XCOM: Enemy Unknown I have just received a free copy of Civilization V, a top notch turn-based strategy game. Because I already owned a copy, I am free to gift the new one to anyone with a steam account. That anyone can be you.

Below is a list of some of my favorite games that are of C class or below. I will give my copy of Civilization V to the first user that brings any of the following articles to FA status:

If none of the articles above have made it to at least the stage of a good faith Featured article candidates run by the end of the year, I will expand the list to include some of my favorites that are ranked B or above:

If none of the articles from the first section make it to the stage of a good faith Featured article candidates run by the end of the year, but one of articles from the second was promoted before the end of the year, the nominator will instantly become eligible to claim my copy of Civilization V. If no game on either of the two lists makes it to FA status by April 6, 2013 (six months from the start of this competition) I will give my copy of Civilization V to the first user that brings any role playing or strategy game to FA status.

You must leave me a message on my user talk page in order to claim the prize.

Disclaimers: I only have one copy, so if you're going to work with someone else, you need to decide ahead of time who gets the game. I can only deliver the game via Steam. By receiving the game, you agree to never disclose any information that Steam transmits along with the game. I haven't read the terms of service closely enough to know if this transaction is a violation of them. If for any reason I lose the ability to gift the game, I am under no obligation to replace it; the competition is simply canceled. I reserve the right to add more games to the above lists.

Good luck. Sven Manguard Wha? 02:22, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I am aware that some people will dislike this because it gets too close to "paid editing". I have no affiliation with anyone involved in any of these games. The selection was (essentially) completely arbitrary. The idea itself came about only because I had the game through the pre-order. If it were a different game that I recieved, I would be offering a different game. Please don't bombard my talk page if you think this is a bad idea; simply choose not to participate.

Revert vandalism on my user page

edit
  • Offeror: The Utahraptor Talk
  • Date offered: 00:41, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Request: I'm busy patrolling Recent Changes, and may or may not notice vandalism on my user page quickly. What I want is for anybody that has rollback rights or uses Twinkle to revert any vandalism you find on my user page. Any edit that is made by an IP address, even if it appears constructive, is vandalism, because I always make sure I'm logged in before I do anything with my user page. Also any edit from a new user that isn't a vandalism revert is probably vandalism, too.
  • Reward: I am prepared to offer an anti-vandalism barnstar to anyone who reverts vandalism on my user page. If you revert more than three vandal edits on my user page you will get the user page shield barnstar.
  • Limit on rewards: Four barnstars per person.

Give good reviews to at least 3 editors at WP:ER

edit
  • Offeror: œ
  • Date offered: 04:26, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
  • Request: Wikipedia:Editor review is backlogged and desperately needs reviewers. If you've ever been ignored in your life I'm sure you know how it feels.. not very nice. Every editor deserves at least a few positive words on their progress or constructive criticism if they request it. Therefore I will offer a barnstar (maybe two depending on how good the reviews are) to anyone who provides at least 3 editors with reviews. But they MUST be good quality reviews, each tailored to the specific individual and not just generic boilerplates for every editor.
  • Reward: A special barnstar
  • Limit on rewards: Since I won't always be monitoring the page, I'll limit it to 5 different people that each give 3 reviews, they'll all get barnstars, and that's 15 editors reviewed so I'm happy with that. If anyone gives more than 3 reviews then I will give them more barnstars if that's what they want :) The point is, we want these editors to feel important and encouraged.

I found that extremely valuable. If possible, I would like to add two more links to that section. The links should lead the reader to other important articles by Parthenope Verney. The articles I would like to see included are "The Miseries of War" and "Class Morality (“Class Morality.” Saint Paul's Magazine 8 (June 1871): 259-268. British Periodicals.") The Wikipedia article on P. Verney references both of these articles. They are equally representative of P. Verney's work with the Great Town Hospital article. Please note the links should lead to the complete text of the article, not bibliographical information.

Remove "A" as the first word from short descriptions

edit
  • Offeror: 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs)
  • Date offered: ~~
  • Request: Remove "A" as the first word from short descriptions, per WP:SHORTDESC.
  • Reward: Your choice of barnstar, and I'll "thank" any random edits that I find interesting.
  • Limit on rewards: None. Pick as many barnstars as you like (within reason)!
  • Expires: When there are less than 50 article short descriptions that start with "a", or all of the rest are within reason.
  • Sign-up: Feel free to ping me here when you start on this task, and another ping when you finish.
For the sake of the sanity of whoever takes this up: Please use AWB. For anyone not familiar use the search hastemplate:"short description" insource:/short description\|[Aan? /]to generate the list and replace ({{[Ss]hort description\|)[Aa]n? (\w) with $1{{subst:uc:$2}}. This is also a typical example of when JWB with faster saving and better substitution handling in diffs. If you don't have AWB access just ask. The folks at WP:AWBREQ are also always hungry for tasks. --Trialpears (talk) 21:54, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Trialpears This doesn't work when the character after the 'a(n)' is not a number or a letter, such as here. As a side note, thanks for the RegEx! —Qwerfjkltalk 20:35, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Qwerfjkl I think you messed up the oldid, but the solution would be expanding the types of characters it capture after a(n). Try replacing \w with a period (.) which should match literally anything instead of just "word characters". I can't guarantee there won't be weird edge cases though. --Trialpears (talk) 20:49, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    @Trialpears Thanks! (fixed the oldid).Qwerfjkltalk 21:06, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@EpicPupper: I can take this on with AWB. I'm assuming you want the first word capitalized as well? Yeeno (talk) 🍁 06:35, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Yeeno, yes, thanks! I'm a pretty active AWB user myself as well, and with Trialpears' instructions, I'll probably try to take this on myself as well. 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs) 16:13, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@EpicPupper, Trialpears, and Yeeno: Any reason this couldn't be done by an AWB bot? I'd be happy to submit the BFRA if you like, and also remove "The" per WP:SDFORMAT. GoingBatty (talk) 22:48, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I imagine there are a couple of false positives where it could cause issues. For example "A iPhone model" would be converted to "IPhone model" which wouldn't be great. --Trialpears (talk) 22:55, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. I was thinking of a bot, but it would probably have too many false positives. 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs) 23:47, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@EpicPupper: Fair enough. I've added your find/replace rule to my AWB setup, and am making those updates when I visit articles for another reason. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 00:08, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@EpicPupper I'll try this with JWB. —Qwerfjkltalk 21:34, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm doing a few too ... from the back of the search list, it looks like I'm in danger of edit conflicts with Qwerfjkl ☆ Bri (talk) 23:22, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
By my calculations there are about 2,700 left. I got a little burned out but will jump back in to try to finish. Watch out for A capella! ☆ Bri (talk) 23:06, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There might be 1,500 or so left. All those "a species of fly" are gone now, I think. ☆ Bri (talk) 13:04, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Note: A useful task, but I would ask anyone tackling it not just to blindly remove "A" or "An". While you're there, also check that the remainder of the description complies with WP:SDFORMAT. In particular, many existing descriptions are far too long and need to be shortened to no more than 40 characters. MichaelMaggs (talk) 07:48, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@MichaelMaggs I've been using the RegEx:
Replace: (\{\{\s*?[Ss]hort description\s*?\|.*?)[\.| |\. |,]\}\}
With:$1{{
To remove punctuation from the end.
1000 left!Qwerfjkltalk 06:22, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Qwerfjkl: I'm curious why you're using \s*? instead of \s* Are you replacing the regex with $1{{ or $1}} Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:44, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, I meant $1}}Qwerfjkltalk 05:35, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Note: An initial article ("a", "an", or "the") should only be removed from short descriptions that are noun phrases. When an article has a short description formatted as a sentence (Example: Euclid's lemma, "A prime that divides a product divides one of the factors"), the article should not be removed, because it would break the grammar of the sentence. Also, do not convert these sentences into noun phrases by adding useless verbiage ("Lemma that a prime that divides a product divides one of the factors") just to comply with the rule about articles in short descriptions; that would not be an improvement. —David Eppstein (talk) 20:14, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Completed. The list is done. The only ones left are for variations of "A cappella group" which is a group that performs A cappella so we should leave those alone. Good that a bot did not remove those instances of 'a'. (Now I have to go back and revert a few instances. I think it is good to close this task/reward. Any missed?--Akrasia25 (talk) 01:32, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like this is done, yep. Once again, thanks everyone! I’ll reward barnstars to whoever I didn’t last time. 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs) 17:03, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Having a go at this (although there are definitely some articles still in the category that have already had their descriptions shortened). pinktoebeans (talk) 19:28, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'll participate in this. I usually find these long ones annoying, and here's some incentivization. -2pou (talk) 23:13, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There's definitely something buggy in populating this category. A number seem to correlate to auto-generated short descriptions from certain infoboxes (i.e. the auto SD would be long, but someone overrode/customized it with something short, yet it's still flagged), but others I can't figure out. -2pou (talk) 01:02, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To help out people finding the same, there are some opened topics regarding this category at Wikipedia talk:Short description#Template incorrectly categorizing when transcluded and Wikipedia talk:Short description#"Category:Articles with long short description" isn't working that indicate this category can't be fully cleared until some additional changes are made (not sure if it'd be on the category end or the transclusion end). Maybe you could try an (expensive) search like hastemplate:"Short description" insource:/\{\{short description\|[^\}]{100,}/

I'm up to trying for this. 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk) 22:57, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try to make a dent at this when I can. JML1148 (talk) 23:36, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ditto. I'll go take a look at the category and take care of what I can. Regards, User:TheDragonFire300. (Contact me | Contributions). 08:53, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Let's do this. I'll try to get 25-75 per day. interstatefive  18:06, 9 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well I did about 15 and 3 got reverted (1 with the edit summary "vandalism"), so I may want to stay away from this for a bit. interstatefive  15:28, 10 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Luxtaythe2nd: Just to let you know, the backlog was recently finished. There aren't any articles left in the category. (Not sure exactly who contributed if you're giving out barnstars. I contributed, but only somewhere between 100 and 200 articles.) — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 14:07, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@PerfectSoundWhatever: Alright. I'll close this shortly. Luxtay the IInd (talketh to me) 17:16, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Luxtaythe2nd: Well... Some new articles popped up, i'll see what I can do. Always a pleasure to help with things like that Craffael.09 (talk) 22:47, 24 October 2022 (UTC) 22:47, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
