Wikipedia:WikiCon Aotearoa/Auckland 2021

Auckland WikiCon will be New Zealand's second Wikimedia conference, to be held at the Learning Labs of Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira in Auckland on Saturday, 17 July and Sunday, 18 July 2021.

The conference is being organised by a sub committee of the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand. Check out the User Group page for more information about our group.

Theme and aims

The theme of this WikiCon is Outreach to the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) Sector and Inclusion.

The aims of the Auckland WikiCon are to:

  • develop the skills of editors of Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons
  • encourage the development of a regular meetup for interested editors located in Auckland.
  • continue to grow the partnership with Auckland Museum to support the Museum in their Wikimedia Foundation activities.
  • expand knowledge about Wikimedia Foundation and its platforms (Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons etc) and the editing skills required into underrepresented communities – women, Māori, Pacific
  • create content using the resources of the Auckland Museum archives and library
  • discuss the further development of the Aotearoa New Zealand User Group, including future strategy and operational matters

Scholarships

We would like to make it possible for anyone to attend this conference, so InternetNZ has generously provided up to four $250 scholarships to help cover transport, accommodation, living expenses if you normally work weekends and/or child care. To apply for a scholarship, email us with a short statement explaining why you would not otherwise be able to attend Auckland WikiCon, and what you most hope to share or learn there. The deadline is the end of June, and decisions will be made 1 July.

If you don't want to apply for a scholarship but there's something stopping you from attending please let us know via the talk page and the organisers will do their best to support you to attend.

Please note there is a $NZ10 booking fee for the event. We are seeking grant funding to cover some of the catering and other costs and keep the conference affordable. The cost of the Conference dinner is not included in registration.

Programme

This is a draft programme and still subject to change. The most consistent piece of feedback from the West Coast WikiCon was that attendees wanted a greater amount of free editing time to share and demonstrate workflows and editing tools with each other. Time has been purposefully built into the two days for this. A concurrent newbie stream will be organised for these timeslots as well to ensure that newbies can learn at their own speed and feel supported.

How editors can contribute to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons & Wikidata using Auckland Museum content. Ambrosia10 hopes to provide an overview of possible contributions editors can make with suggestions on methods, best practice and tools. She hopes to inspire attendees to consider what they would like to learn more about during the conference.

  • 11.45am Concurrent Break out editing / info sharing session - Newbies will have their own space with Giantflightlessbirds, Gertrude206 and another experienced editor to provide refresher training, help answer questions, and review how to practically do the workflows discussed in the previous presentation. (1hr 15 min)
  • 11.45am Concurrent Break out editing / info sharing session - Experienced editors mingle and talk workflows and tool sharing tips and tricks. (1hr 15 min)
  • 1.00pm Lunch - catering provided (60 min)
  • 2.00pm "Hidden Heritage" tour (60 min) - three Auckland Museum hosts will meet us in the conference room to take us on a tour.
  • 3.00pm Afternoon tea - catering provided (30 min)
  • 3.30pm Unconference discussion topics or visit the new Auckland History galleries followed by an Edit-a-thon on Auckland pages (90 min)
  • 5.00pm finish for the day. Discussion on car pooling / sharing transport to the dinner.

  • Einebillion (talk) is sharing transport with one other person at 5pm on Friday to go to Parnell. If you want to join us leave me a message here.
  • Giantflightlessbirds is catching a 6pm flight on Sunday, and would be happy to share a cab or accept a lift.

The organisers will be maintaining a mailing list of attendees for the purposes of COVID19 tracing. Auckland War Memorial Museum will have COVID19 app tracer QR codes and sign in sheets available.
