Separate article for Shinjuku neighborhood as opposed to Shinjuku ward?
I notice on the Japanese Wikipedia there is a separate article for the Shinjuku neighborhood, as opposed to the Shinjuku ward: ja:新宿 and ja:新宿区. Is anyone interested in splitting the English article? WhisperToMe (talk) 09:16, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
- There's not really any substantiative difference for our own coverage to require a split.—Ryūlóng (琉竜) 09:22, 23 March 2014 (UTC)
- Are there enough sources to make a split needed/possible? I think that is the most important question. WhisperToMe (talk) 12:24, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
- I don't know. In my observations, the Japanese Wikipedia makes up splits for things where we wouldn't all the time.—Ryūlóng (琉竜) 13:31, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

QVC Marine Field
Hi, I checked the archives and couldn't find anything on this, so if it's there and I missed it, then I apologize in advance. I noticed that the stub for the home of the Chiba Lotte Marines still goes by Chiba Marine Stadium even though the naming rights were sold to QVC and the stadium is has been officially called QVC Marine Field for the past few years. There is a hard direct, and it is mentioned in the article's infobox, but there is nothing at all on this in the main space. Should the stub's name be changed or is the hard redirect good enough? Naming rights are used as names of articles on MLB stadiums, but not for NPB stadiums. Does anybody know if there is a specific reason for this or is it just a coincidence? - Marchjuly (talk) 21:35, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
Translation
I am trying to compile a list of the speakers of the Ryukyu legislature, but need translation of the two first names. Here they are:
- 泉有平(1952–1952)
- 護得久朝章(–1953)
Thank you very much! Mbakkel2 (talk) 20:30, 1 April 2014 (CET)

Ryūkyū TaskForce Request
Hello, At the urging of Kwamikagami and Ryulong, I've decided to come to WikiProject Japan. I noticed that there were many poor/missing articles about the Ryūkyū Islands and the Ryūkyū Kingdom, so I created WikiProject Ryūkyū. Although I object to it, I was told that my WikiProject would be more efficient and have better support if I converted it into a WP Japan TaskForce. So I'm here, asking for your help. Much obliged in advance. ミーラー強斗武 (talk) 03:27, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
- I'd like to add that many existing Ryūkyūan articles are stubs full of red links, and it'd be nice if anyone would help me take care of them. ミーラー強斗武 (talk) 15:26, 21 January 2014 (UTC)
- Comment New WikiProjects are proposed through WP:COUNCIL, so not going that route ends up in deletion at WP:MFD. Since WP:WikiProject Ryūkyū was redirected (Wikipedia:WikiProject Ryūkyū (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)) to WP:JAPAN, there's no current actual wikiproject. -- 70.50.148.122 (talk) 06:26, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
- Reply: Yes, the WikiProject was deleted and the page was redirected. ミーラー強斗武 (talk) 18:20, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

- Support WP:JAPAN/RYUKYU / WP:WikiProject Japan/Ryūkyū task force ; a WP:RYUKYU would be good in listing topics needing editor focus in the subject of the archipelago/island chain/island arc, its people, politics, language, history. Though if you did not want a parent of WPJAPAN, there's always WP:WikiProject East Asia that can also function as a parent to such a task force. -- 70.50.148.122 (talk) 06:26, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

- The former Ryukyu Kingdom is now a part of Japan so it doesn't make much sense to go with the East Asia WikiProject. Also, you don't need to have all this Reply and Comment formality.—Ryūlóng (琉竜) 18:37, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
- Well now that I've looked at a few other WikiProjects, I agree that I shouldn't have tried to start one by myself, but I would like to point out the existance of WikiProject Soviet Union and WikiProject Ottoman Empire, since they're also former countries belonging to other countries presently, which also have their own WikiProjects. The scope of the WikiProject is bigger than just the Ryūkyū Kingdom anyway. ミーラー強斗武 (talk) 18:54, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
- You can't really compare major world powers and major players in world history to a chain of islands that was a tributary state twice over. I don't mean to belittle the islands but the Soviet Union and Ottoman Empire were vast nations of major import.—Ryūlóng (琉竜) 20:37, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
- Sure I can. The Kingdom lasted much longer than the USSR, and almost as long as the Ottoman Empire (not including the Gusuku Period). It was a major player in the trade routes of Medieval and Renaissance East Asia. Size or strength don't make any country more important than another when it comes to history. And again, I wanted the WikiProject to cover more than just the Ryūkyū Kingdom. ミーラー強斗武 (talk) 22:02, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
- I figure I can't just convert my WP into a task force myself, a WP:Japan administrator has to create the task force, right? So I'll just stay on my own until that happens, and move my "office space" after the fact. Agreed? ミーラー強斗武 (talk) 21:35, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
- Holy cow, there's no such level of bureaucracy for task force. Make Wikipedia:WikiProject Japan/Ryukyu task force and get it over with.—Ryūlóng (琉竜) 21:57, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

Help with an article?
I need some help finding sources for Shori Sato. The sources will likely be entirely in Japanese, which I don't read/speak. Google Translate only goes so far, so I definitely need help looking for sources and fleshing out the article. He's been in some TV dramas and while I know that this is somewhat typical idol fare, there does seem to be some notability asserted as a whole. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 07:09, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
- Tokyogirl, I also suggest asking the Chatsubo at ja:Wikipedia:Chatsubo. They can help you find sources in Japanese. WhisperToMe (talk) 12:59, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Help with small text in old Japanese
I'm doing an essay on the Ainu people and I badly need a first hand source. There is a small text in this Google book [1] on page 19, which should be a decree that banned the Ainu from fishing. I would be really grateful if someone could assist me with a quick translation. Thanks in advance. Val-Ainu1 (talk) 15:37, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

The Spanish Wikipedia is requesting Japanese speakers to evaluate Japanese-language sources for an "Articles for Deletion" debate
Dear Wikipedians, The Spanish Wikipedia is requesting Japanese speakers to evaluate Japanese-language sources for an "Articles for Deletion" debate. This article for deletion debate on the es:Liceo Mexicano Japonés (English article) is located here: es:Wikipedia:Consultas de borrado/Liceo Mexicano Japonés. For any Japanese-language source, please make any necessary translations of the key points/phrases/material that discuss the article and explain how/why the source shows notability for the subject. If you know of any Japanese language sources independent of the subject: newspaper articles, books on Google Books (search for any of the names of this school: 社団法人日本メキシコ学院, 日本メキシコ学院, 日墨学院 and you may find sources), etc. please add them as they can be helpful.
You are welcome to post comments/analysis/questions in the English language.
Thank you, WhisperToMe (talk) 02:29, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- A Japanese Wikipedian posted links to lists of sources in Japanese (some may be in English) from the Japanese research service CiNii: Result 1 and Result 2 as well as two links from the National Diet Library - 1 and 2. - If anyone wants go through these sources or to check them, please feel free to do so. On the AFD page, sources are separated into two groups: first English and Spanish ones, and then into Japanese ones. WhisperToMe (talk) 14:01, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
Here are two newspaper articles about the school from a Nikkei newspaper in Brazil, written by a staff writer:
- (in Japanese) Fukasawa, Masayuki (深沢 正雪 Fukasawa Masayuki). "再浮上する日伯学園構想――第四部 日本と国際学校-(3)-日墨学院①-〝独系のような学校を〟-駐在員と共に周到に準備." (Archive) Nikkey Shimbun (Jornal do Nikkey). 3月27日(水) 2002.
- (in Japanese) Fukasawa, Masayuki (深沢 正雪 Fukasawa Masayuki). "再浮上する日伯学園構想――第四部日本と国際学校-(4)-日墨学院②-少しでも統合教程へ-絶え間ない国際化努力." (Archive) Nikkey Shimbun (Jornal do Nikkey). 3月28日(木)
In general what do they talk about? Do they only cover history or do they also talk about the significance in the Japanese community? Any controversies? WhisperToMe (talk) 16:22, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for waiting. The first link is about the history of the school. The second link is about the uniqueness and problems of the school as they have two courses. The Japanese course with the standard education in Japan plus Spanish language and learning Mexico lessons. The Mexican course is a school like other public schools in Mexico. They also have a culture center for students of both courses. Oda Mari (talk) 15:37, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
- Found it. Thank you so much, Oda Mari! WhisperToMe (talk) 05:06, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
- If any Wikipedians are interested, would anyone be interested in translating the list of sources at es:Wikipedia discusión:Consultas de borrado/Liceo Mexicano Japonés into English so the Spanish Wikipedia editors have better understandings of which sources to use? Dear Japan experts: This old Afc submission was declined because there is already an article Treasure Box (T-ara album). However, the mainspace article is poorly sourced, and the draft has more extensive information. If some of the information and sources from the draft were to be moved to the mainspace article, the draft could be made into a redirect to maintain attribution. Is there anyone at this project who is interested in working on this? I can handle the redirection if necessary. —Anne Delong (talk) 03:48, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
Hello, editors. This is one more of those abandoned Afc submissions soon to be deleted as a stale draft. Should it be kept and improved instead? —Anne Delong (talk) 21:39, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
Dear Japan experts: This interesting abandoned Afc submission is about a Japanese scientist. I am posting it here in case anyone is interested in finding sources, which would likely not be on line. It will be deleted soon as a stale draft unless someone edits it. —Anne Delong (talk) 13:18, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Can someone find/verify the man's name kanji for the article?--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 11:54, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
- I've only been able to find conflicting results. Googling for his name in hiragana plus 地震 宮城県 only results in blogs which contain user-made Japanese translations of a Los Angeles Times report; original Japanese coverage of this person is practically absent. Some Japanese pages write his name as 秀明赤岩, however I suspect that this is a guesstimate (searching for this name only results in a handful of Chinese hits, which also are direct translations of a LA times article). This translation blog and this one refer to him as simply "宮城県のあかいわひであきさん". Either the LA times got his name wrong, or this guy has literally zero presence in the Japanese media. --benlisquareT•C•E 12:11, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
