Translation question

What is 十畳（床付） referring to the Shoin of Ryōkō-in (竜光院?) (Daitoku-ji). Is it a ten tatami mat alcove? bamse (talk) 23:08, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Sorry. My poor English! I mean "a ten tatami mat room with an alcove/tokonoma." The kanji 床 is a shortened form of 床の間/tokonoma and 付(き) means attached or with. Is this understandable? Oda Mari (talk) 16:51, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Does this picture show the Kuroshoin (as indicated by the image description) or the Ōhiroma as written in the Nijō Castle article? bamse (talk) 08:53, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

It seems to be Kuroshoin because the Sliding Door Panels (Fusumae) called Ōkakijizu (桜花雉子図) can be seen at the room (with red tassel). See [1] ―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 09:54, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Bukkake

There's a bizarre discussion going on at Talk:Bukkake about whether the claim that bukkake is an ancient Japanese ritual should be presented as unqualified fact. Additional comments would be welcome, and any solid references would be even better, although finding any on Google tends to be challenging to say the least... Indeed a bizzare discussion. User: Atom seems to be intent on keeping the (granted, sourced, albeit shakily) citation, because the ancient (when exactly was "ancient" again?) Help with Daily Yomiuri sources

Does anyone know if there is an archive of past articles that appear on http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/? They have a lot of great English language info about the NPB and I would love access to past articles. Also, articles such as 2009 Japan Series use a lot of these articles and now they are all dead links. I can't imagine all of these articles are deleted completely, so... where are they? --Torsodog^Talk 20:11, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

As far as I know, there are no archives (the newspaper doesn't keep any for some odd reason). It would be awesome if someone created a bot which browsed their site daily and archived the articles using a site like WebCite, posting the original URLs and the WebCite URL together on a page here. All Japanese news sites run by television networks and newspapers are pretty notorious for this, unfortunately. The Japan Times has a free 11-year archive of articles; if you don't mind a Japanese-language source, J-CAST has business and media-related articles with free archives going back several years. --armagebedar (talk) 00:59, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Translation help again

I am stuck making sense of the following description of a katana at the Eisei Bunko Museum: 刀〈金象嵌銘光忠　光徳花押／生駒讃岐守所持〉（生駒光忠）. If I understand correctly, it has a gold inlay inscription/signature/mei: "光忠" = Mitsutada = name of swordsmith (?). It was owned by 生駒光忠 (=Ikoma Mitsutada?) who was governor of Sanuki province. Can somebody confirm this and what is the meaning of "光徳花押"? bamse (talk) 19:20, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm no expert but my understanding based on ja:光忠 and some online search is that 光徳花押 indicates the sword has some kind of signed (Kaō) certificate by a connoisseur (本阿弥)光徳. And for 生駒光忠 it is probably not the name of the owner but the name of the sword, taking the surname of the owner Ikoma Sanuki-no-kami and the name of the sword smith Mitsutada. Lastly the ja article says the gold inlay inscription was made by the connoisseur and not by the swordsmith himself. --Kusunose 08:37, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Trains and companies

On the Japanese WP, it's normal to create separate articles for train lines and the companies that operate them, but this has generally been avoided on en-WP... until today, when Rinkai Line was separated from Tokyo Waterfront Area Rapid Transit for no immediately obvious reason. As the company exists solely to operate the line, I think this served no useful purpose, and should be reverted. See discussion on Talk:Tokyo Waterfront Area Rapid Transit, but I'd like to generalize the outcome of this into policy. (And to be clear, I'm referring only to the very common case of a 1-1 correspondence between a company and a single line, not large companies with multiple different lines like Tokyo Metro, Hankyu etc.) Jpatokal (talk) 10:06, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Ameba (website)

Hi. I have turned down a speedy deletion request for Ameba (website), which has an Alexa rating in the 220s and appears to be one of the more popular websites in Japan - top 20 according to Alexa. I was hoping that someone might like to expand it and/or find some sources. I do not speak Japanese and have no knowledge of the website, so I am unable to do this myself. a personal query

Hello all. This may not be completely appropriate for this page, but I suppose there is no harm in asking. If I'm violating some policy, feel free to delete this question.

The project I'm currently working at here in my homeland of Slovenia is slowly drawing to an end, and I'll be finding myself on the jobs market somewhere in the summer. I was considering going to work in Japan next. Does any of you guys know of any good jobs-in-Japan websites or some other resources? I don't mind Japanese language ones, in fact I'd prefer one like that - one thing I know is I don't want to teach English, and the English language sites seem to be over-flooded with nothing but ALT postings... I just did a quick translation of the intro. There isn't much going on here, though it seems to make a point of her writing her name in hiragana rather than kanji. There's other text like her blood type, but I didn't think that particularly necessary. Requested move

Azumi Basin → Azumino/Azumidaira. The reasons: Azumino/Azumidaira is a proper noun, which should not be translated into English. Loch Ness is not translated as Lake Ness, nor is Tokyo translated as East Capital. (cf The Times Atlas of the World) Nobody recognizes the title Azumi Basin. Eb1099 (talk) 22:56, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Azumino is definitely common nowadays. "Formerly called Azumidaira," the article says. But it should be noted that Azumino is now a redirect to the city of Azumino, Nagano. --Sushiya (talk) 14:09, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Reliable reviews for Japanese albums?

I've been trying, with no luck, to find reliable reviews for the album Supercell (album), so as to possibly get it up to GA, but as of right now, I have found none. I first tried looking at the GAs/FAs in WP:ALBUM/WP:SONG, but did not find any albums from Japanese musical groups, other than one or two for soundtracks from Japanese video games, which didn't help me. I also tried looking at WP:ALBUM/REVSIT, but found none that would cover Japanese bands. Considering the album was certified Gold in Japan, there must have been at least some reliable reviews of it, so I know they should be out there, but I need help in finding them. So, anyone got any suggestions/can you help me find some/should I just give up?--十八 01:28, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

About that, I was looking around and found ja:WHAT's IN?, published by Sony (Supercell's record label), and I found out that they were interviewed in the September 2009 issue, but I don't know if they reviewed the album in that issue (more likely there was a review of their debut single which was released in August 2009). The album didn't get Gold until June 2009, though, so it's possible they waited until the issue where they interviewed them, but that's just wishful thinking from me.--十八 01:52, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
