I'm a new editor and also want to contribute a new article as soon as my account is confirmed. My problem is that I don't think I'll be able to make at least ten edits to qualify my account for confirmation. I did two edits yesterday, both of them substantive, but I can't think of any other Wikipedia articles that I know enough about to edit. I'd be more than willing to do copy editing/proofing on existing articles, but none of the articles I've read on Wikipedia seem to need corrections in spelling or grammar. If you know of any that need attention, please direct me to them so that I can make my ten edit quota!
Alternatively, I gather that there may be a way to ask for confirmation even without having done all ten edits. Is this true, and how would I make that request?
Many thanks!

- Well I would love to help you! I am a relatively new user to Wikipedia myself but I have been on Wikia for about 2 years. What I suggest you do is looking at the Recent Changes and checking edits made by users which are not logged in. Or what you could do is search for an article all about a topic that you have a passion in (so for me that would be the Manga page), then grab some coco, find a comfy chair and read the whole article you will most likely find a mistake somewhere on there! - Hi! I'm not sure if you're still looking for pages to edit, but I would love some help with the one written for the director of the nonprofit I work for. I'm not ethically authorized to work on it, but can see it needs some cleaning up. I see you're a part of the Filmmaker forum so I thought you might be interested in helping out. Let me know! I'm hoping to find a template for film actors, specifically for child actresses in films. I thought I saw that templates exist for actors, but I can't find them.Ailemadrah (talk) 03:00, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- If you mean the infobox, that's just the generic {{infobox person}}. There is no specialized infobox for actors. Huon (talk) 03:34, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Signatures in article edits
editGreetings! From what I've seen so far, you seem to be doing a good job finding references and touching up articles! One thing I would like to note, though, is that adding signatures to your edits directly is unnecessary (and, in fact, adds clutter to the article contents) - the edit summary automatically generated when you make a change to an article tells us who you are. Thanks, and keep up the good work! SpecMode (talk) 03:03, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Miriam Battista bio
editHi, I'm Binksternet and I've been creating articles on Wikipedia for almost six years. I started the one about Beatriz Michelena, a silent film actress, so I feel like I can help you with the one you want to write about Miriam Battista.
The first thing I noticed was that a lot of your suggested text brings new information to the public, information which has never before been published. Wikipedia has a hard-and-fast rule against this, which you can read at WP:No original research. I think you will have to remove from of the dates and people from the article, even though you know the information is true.
Beyond that problem, I have seen some good sources that are not yet utilized in helping to flesh out the article. For instance, in 1923 Photoplay had a whimsical bit: "Miriam Battista, who is an experienced actress of about ten, says she would like to marry Jackie [Coogan]. Jackie hasn't been consulted. Had he been he would probably say he prefers dogs to girls. Masculine tastes vary widely according to age."
In 1924, Motion Picture magazine included these bits:
There is a delightful story told about George Arliss and Miriam Battista. Miriam was working with Mr. Arliss on his next picture. She is an unusual child and attempts to make conversation after the manner of those years older than she. "Mr. Arliss," she said, one day, "do you know Elinor Glynn?" "Do you mean the writer," asked Mr. Arliss in his English accent. "Yes, the writer," supplied Miriam. "I think she's perfectly wonderful. She's going to write a story and I'm going to play in it on the screen." George Arliss adjusted his monocle and looked down upon the speck of eager humanity standing before him. "How perfectly extraordinary!" he said.
It is quite the thing for photoplay celebrities to pose for their portraits. And the size of Miriam Battista has not lessened her radiance. So Miriam sat for a portrait, too.
Harry Morey, Marguerite Clayton, George Fawcett and Miriam Battista are playing in "The Curse of Drink".
Mary Carr, "the screen's greatest mother," has started work on her new film, an adaptation of Florence Bingham Livingston's novel "The Custard Cup." It will be released under the title of "Penzie." Miriam Baptiste, [sic] who made such a success in "Humoresque," is to have an important part in it, also. Miriam has retained her naturalness and has not become self-conscious as so many child actresses do after their first success. The picture is being filmed in the Fox Eastern studios.
"A Woman of the World" By GLADYS HALL.
And the manner of Miriam! Astounding! She bows; she shakes hands; she greets you; she makes "small talk." And she discusses all things with the savoir faire and ease and surety of the most womanly of women of the world.
MIRIAM is amazing. Simply amazing. Having met and talked with Miriam Battista and Jackie Coogan my opinion of the mature intelligentsia bats about 1.0000000. Of course there are certain salient facts that all good fans and true know about Miriam... such as that there were eight candles upon her last birthday cake; that she has been "a actress" since she was two; that she has a father, a mother and two brothers; that she played in "Humoresque" and that she is about to appear in Mr. Arliss's forthcoming picture production, "The Silent Voice."Miss Miriam (you simply couldn't say just "Miriam" and accord the small and starry person her just need of dignity), Miss Miriam was born eight years ago. Of Italian parentage. That's that. But, part from the eight earthly years, how many incarnations she must have had I dare not venture to say. I do venture, however, that there have been at least as many incarnations as birthdays. For eight of our little fiscal years could never bring a brain, a personality to such a state of maturity unless the rest of the world, which is within the realm of probability, must be classified as highgrade morons.
Talking with her the other day her publicity representative brought some new photographs for her approval. Miss Miriam subjected them to careful scrutiny. She objected to the eyes of one, the nose of another, the expression of a third. She was critical... appraising... "Miriam," said the patient P. A., "a photographer took these... not an artist." Miriam considered. "Then," said Miriam, "hereafter I prefer to be photographed by an artist." It isn't so much that Miriam is not a child, as that, still being a child, she has reached into the after years and taken from them what she needs in her present days... Now and then childhood laughs thru... Once she played with dolls... not so long ago. "My Aunt came to my home the other day," Miriam told me, "and said that she would wash all of my dolls and make new clothes for them—when she got to thirty-five she stopped !" "Or was stopped," I sighed... Thirty-five dolls, even Miriam's dolls, would discourage the most enterprising... "But now," said Miriam, "I dont get dolls any more. Everyone who ever gave me a present gave me a doll. I've changed all that. I just tell people that I prefer jewelry..." (Future donors please take notice.) "Any particular—er—pieces ?" "I have pearls," considered Miriam, "tiny ones, perfectly matched. And bracelets. And rings. I think I should like some white jade... I adore white jade. And antique pieces... very, very old..." "When you ask... do you get it? The jewelry?" "Oh my, yes," said Miriam, all unconsciously, all comfortably. And there spoke the child. Still, for her, it is a glittering world—the world of Andrew Lang and the Brothers Grimm... the world where knitting balls unfold rare treasures as you knit... where the magic wand of a request brings swift fulfilment. "What," I said, "do you wish to do and be when you grow up?" "I should like to be married while a child," said Miriam, at once, "or when I'm about fourteen, I think. Of course, when I am that old I shall have to begin to think about reducing... while I'm a little girl being fat doesn't matter." Just the same she regarded me with some anxiety. I remained silent. I would not be beguiled by a pair of the most beguiling eyes I have ever star-gazed into.
Professionally, Signorina Battista's ambition is to be like unto Madame Nazimova. And if I am any horoscopist at all I should say that she had made at least an average start... Miriam doesn't play much with children. Of course, she hasn't time. When Mother is ill Miriam manages the house, inclusive of father and the brothers two. She also cleans, orders and plans meals. She is nothing in this world if not capable. Then there is her private tutor and shopping (altho her mother makes all of her clothes) and sleep and the demands of the studio. But when she does indulge in less exacting pastimes she elects to play with the wee tots and, very occasionally, with girls of fourteen and fifteen. There is, by the way, the maternal instinct in small Miriam. She may not know it, but probably her subconscious instinct is for a million children and one maid, rather than her avowed vice versa.
There is the siren instinct, too. Of course I know that I should only tell tales on girls my own size... but it may as well be known before too much damage is done: Miriam is a vamp! Never let it be said that Old Order of the Lorelei is extinct, with Miriam growing up, more dangerous every hour. With mine own eyes I saw her reduce two strong and stalwart men to a state of collapse. One of them did a Sappho act and carried the buxom lady starlet up devious flights of steep and winding stairs, nor did I hear her plead, "Oh, put me down! Put me down!"... Scandalized bystanders threatened to tell his wife and, if only in the interest of Comstockery, doubtless one of them has done so.
The other gentleman was cornered in a limousine and between tempestuous caresses murmured ineffectual nothings about the weather and mopped his heated brow... Of course I am mentioning no names, not wishing to start trouble no place!
Miriam's black curls... and sloe black eyes... her olive skin... and piquant mouth... her dancing feet and dancing wit... well a few short years from now all existent flappers had best take warning. Miriam will institute a new order in the land, and they will come, from out of the covers of the Brothers Grimm, on palfreys white and dazzling mammoth swans, to buy her jade of deadly white and carry her up steep and winding stairs...
The above "Woman of the World" piece is fabulous ammunition for establishing the notability of the actress. Binksternet (talk) 05:24, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

Q&A with Mr. X
edit@MrX: Hi again, and thank you again for adopting me!
First, because you praised Binksternet so highly, I want to add that I feel astoundingly lucky that my article on Miriam Battista caught his eye - his work on it was impeccable, and his communications to me were kind and patient. I sent him an image of a bouquet and thanked him on his user page, but I wonder if there's any way I can sing his praises to the folks higher up in the WP hierarchy. Or is that not necessary? In any case, he's a gem.
- Yes, he is a gem. There's no real hierarchy at Wikipedia. Your bouquet of flowers was a nice way to say thank you. We also award barnstars for particularly exemplary work. - MrX
To answer your questions, I do plan to create more articles. I'm interested in creating biographies, especially for actors and writers, and also in improving articles on food. But my interests are very wide-ranging, so there are a lot of areas I'd be interested in working on. Before I launch into another article, I'd like to get a lot more experience editing.
Here's a newbie question: How do I recognize vandalism? And how do I remove it - or should I?? I was looking at some of the stubs in WP:Food in hopes of improving them, and in the talk for "Ingredient" found the following:
what's the main ingredient inbubblegum? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.232.65.6 (talk) 07:45, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
Is that vandalism? Are unsigned comments considered suspect?
- No, I don't think that would qualify as vandalism. It seems to be a reader asking a question on a talk page, not realizing that talk pages are not fora. Vandalism is usually more obvious, and usually found in articles. By our definition, vandalism is deliberate attempts to compromise the integrity of the encyclopedia. By all means, you should be vigilant about reverting vandalism, but be somewhat cautious, and ask me or another experienced editor if you have doubts.
- Here is a good starting point for identifying and reverting vandalism. The navbox on the right of the page provides some good resources. If you want to contribute to fighting vandalism, you might want to help with recent change patrol. The recent changes queue can be accessed by clicking on 'Recent changes' under the 'Interaction' heading in the left column menu. Then, near the top of the page, you can choose the specific queue to monitor, for example, New editor's contribs or IP's contribs, where much of the vandalism occurs.
- There are some tools that make fighting vandalism much easier. The first is Twinkle which you can activate by clicking on preferences (top, right), then the gadgets tab, then checking the box next to 'Twinkle...' under the heading 'Browsing'. If you want to become a heavy-hitter anti-vandal patroller, you might consider using STiki after you have gained some experience editing. - MrX

- You're welcome. - MrX 17:11, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
Use of a photo still under copyright
edit@MrX: I just got the welcome news that I now have permission to add to the article on Miriam Battista a wonderful glam publicity shot of her when she was in her early 20s. The photographer is now long deceased, and the rights to his work belong to his family. His great-niece sent me an email stating that the family gives their permission for me to use the photo and that they would be willing to sign any release form I might need. What does WP require to prove that permission has been given? --Ailemadrah (talk) 14:57, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
- Ideally they would need to agree to a form of wording like what is at WP:CONSENT. Note that this allows rather wider re-use of the image (including for commercial purposes) than just use on Wikipedia. Arthur goes shopping (talk) 15:33, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
- @Arthur goes shopping: Uh-oh! I have a feeling they'll draw the line at commercial purposes. Is there a way to permit usage on Wikipedia and beyond, but NOT commercially?? --Ailemadrah (talk) 15:39, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
- Not easily. We definitely cannot use an image under fair use, since we already have properly free images of her during the height of her fame. I think there are some rules about promotional images issued without copyright statements, and of a certain age, being eligible as free images. I will look into this further. Arthur goes shopping (talk) 15:47, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
- It's not practical to stop people from commercially using images they find online. One solution is to limit the size and detail of the free image, for instance, to keep it smaller than 200 pixels high and 200 pixels wide. That way the image is not really crisp and sharp enough for commercial benefit. Another tactic is to crop the free image so that the complete image is still valuable. A notional commercial product about Battista could then offer a superb, high-quality photo with the knowledge that the image is unique. Binksternet (talk) 15:51, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)I think there may be a problem with the photo if the copyright owner has restrictions against commercial use. There are exceptions to this, but usually only if no other free equivalent is available, which is obviously not the case here. The guidelines and policy for non-free content can be found here: WP:NFC. Quoting from the policy,
Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose. Where possible, non-free content is transformed into free material instead of using a fair-use defense, or replaced with a freer alternative if one of acceptable quality is available; "acceptable quality" means a quality sufficient to serve the encyclopedic purpose. (As a quick test, before adding non-free content requiring a rationale, ask yourself: "Can this non-free content be replaced by a free version that has the same effect?" and "Could the subject be adequately conveyed by properly sourced text without using the non-free content at all?" If the answer to either is yes, the non-free content probably does not meet this criterion.)
- If the photo has unique historical value that can't be provided by free photos, then that argument may work as a rationale. Otherwise, it doesn't seem as if the photo can be used, unless the copyright owners agree to license it freely and without usage restrictions. Hopefully you can convince them of the cultural benefit of freely licensing the photo. Arthur goes shopping and Biksternet also offer useful advice. - MrX 16:03, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
@Arthur goes shopping: @Binksternet: @MrX: Many thanks to all of you! I've written to the photographer's family and explained both the extent of potential usage and the virtue of same in getting him wider current notice. I haven't heard back yet - I gather one of the people involved in the decision is his daughter, who would be quite old now, so I expect the decision might take some time. --Ailemadrah (talk) 02:04, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
@Arthur goes shopping: @Binksternet: @MrX: I apologize for how often I send you questions, but thorny questions keep emerging! First, I should tell you that the photographer who took the image I want to use was famous in his day, and I'm eager to try to get an article about him published on Wikipedia. His name was Murray Korman, and he was celebrated as one of the originators of glamor photography (though not mentioned in the Wikipedia article on that subject, which is where I'll start introducing references to him). I think there's enough secondary material out there to make a Wikipedia bio feasible. In talkiing with his great-niece (one of two living heirs - Korman had no children and his estate went to his two nieces, one of whom is now deceased), she expressed concern over two issues:
- If an image of a famous person - her example was Gypsy Rose Lee - is published on Wikipedia and the subject or the subject's heirs object, will the photographer's heirs or I or Wikipedia face liability issues? There are no release forms in Korman's files. Does the subject of a photo have any automatic copyright interest in his or her own image?
- IANAL and this is not legal advice, but my layperson answer is that there are two potential types of liability involved: Copyright and personality rights. Copyright belongs to the person who made the photograph (the photographer), not the subject of the photograph, or the family of the subject. If the photographer dies, then the rights transfer to the photographer's estate (or heirs). The photo may be public domain now, depending on when it was produced, if it was published and if the copyright was renewed. (see Copyright law of the United States#Duration of copyright). Personality rights are rights that the subject of a photography have in certain jurisdictions. - MrX
- The great-niece and her aunt have no documentation of copyright. Are they the de facto owners of Korman's images, since those images are not yet in the public domain? Would there be a record of copyright anywhere, like the Library of Congress?
- To your first question, no, unfortunately it does not work that way (see my response above). There may be a record of the photos in the Library of Congress if the copyright was ever registered, however only registrations post-1978 are available for online searching. Anything prior to that requires a trip to the library or hiring a researcher. I assume that you are already aware of these images at the LOC: Meriam Battista. - MrX
The good news is that as soon as I can send her the form for the image of Miriam Battista, I'll be able to add it to the article. It'll be a really stunning addition. --Ailemadrah (talk) 19:23, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
- Great. I can't wait to see it. I think a Murray Korman article would be a great idea. I may even help with it. - MrX 20:49, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
- @MrX: It would be a pleasure to work on a Murray Korman article with you - thank you!! (Of course I should have known that you'd be aware of Korman...) And many thanks for all the helpful info you provided on the copyright and liability issues. Ailemadrah (talk) 00:18, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
- @MrX: The Korman photo has now been placed in the Miriam Battista article - check it out. Also, I put the easiest-to-hand bio of Korman on the talk page of Murray Korman (I put it on the talk page since it's raw reference, and I wanted you to be able to work with it if you wanted to). Now for the real work! BTW, I have established a really good working relationship with Korman's great-niece, so I think we'll have no further trouble uploading Korman images. --Ailemadrah (talk) 02:22, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- That's a great photo. Thanks for going to the effort to add it. I think having an article talk page without an article will be an issue. They usually get deleted under WP:G8. Can I suggest that you MOVE it to your user space for now? Alternatively, you could just create the article as a stub, and flesh it out as time allows. If you do create the article, please ping me so that I can help. - MrX 02:45, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- @MrX: Aaaaargh! I've made a total mess. The Miriam Battista article is still on my sandbox page, and I was afraid that if I added the Murray Korman info it might wreck the Miriam Battista article. So I deleted the "Broadway Photographs" info from the Murray Korman talk page and pasted it onto the article's creation page, and now the wrath of Wikipedia has come down on me. I tried to delete everything, but it's all still there, with the warnings. I feel terrible. Please help!!! --Ailemadrah (talk) 05:32, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
Article assessment
editIn the meantime, here's another question which I'd be delighted to have all of you weigh in on: what's needed to bring this article from C-Class to B-Class or even higher? I'd love to put in whatever work that would entail. --Ailemadrah (talk) 02:04, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
- The Film WikiProject has this page describing assessments: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Film/Assessment. I think Miriam Battista is already C-Class but it needs to have more detail about her most important stage and film roles to be B-Class. Note that an article may never be able to advance beyond a certain point because of a lack of in-depth coverage by reliable sources. Binksternet (talk) 02:52, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
- Binksternet sums it up nicely. Each project has its own criteria, but they are usually very similar. For example, here are the criteria for biographies. You can find links to the criteria by clicking on quality scale on the WikiProject Banners on an article's talk page. It can also be helpful to read articles in the category that you are trying to get the article promoted to.
- Most WikiProjects have a section for requesting assessments, and only occasionally will they be assessed otherwise. It can take a while after posting an assessment request before someone actually completes it. You can request a WikiProject Biography assessment here. - MrX 16:51, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
DYK for Miriam Battista
editOn 7 July 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Miriam Battista, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that child star Miriam Battista (pictured) was often called upon to cry on camera? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Miriam Battista. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Variety subscription
editDo you have a subscription to Variety? If the answer is 'yes', your help would be appreciated at the article Miss Calypso, for the purpose of filling in full citations for the Variety references. Binksternet (talk) 21:51, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
- @Binksternet: Sadly, no. That hung me up when I was working on the Miriam Battista article. I was able to suss out the titles of the mentions referred to, but that was a result of lucky guesswork. I could try to do the same with the Miss Calypso article, but I can't guarantee success. --Ailemadrah (talk) 22:26, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
- Ah, well. Thanks for the reply, but guesswork is not what the article needs now. Binksternet (talk) 22:29, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Hello Ailemadrah,
It seems to me that an article you worked on, Murray Korman, may be copied from http://broadway.cas.sc.edu/content/murray-korman. It's entirely possible that I made a mistake, but I wanted to let you know because Wikipedia is strict about copying from other sites.
It's important that you edit the article and rewrite it in your own words, unless you're absolutely certain nothing in it is copied. If you're not sure how to fix the problem or have any questions, there are people at the help desk who are happy to assist you.
Thank you for helping build a free encyclopedia! MadmanBot (talk) 05:10, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- @MadmanBot: I'm so sorry! I was trying to follow advice from an experienced editor, and I messed it up totally. I never intended to have the quoted text from "Broadway Photographs" appear in the finished article, I was just using the page as a place to store it, since my sandbox still has my first article in it, and I was afraid that adding a new article might impact the first one. All this is totally my own fault for getting in over my head, but it was unintentional. I have removed the copyrighted text and reference, but I feel that I've hurt my Wikipedia reputation. Can you tell me what I should do now?? --Ailemadrah (talk) 06:00, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- Don't worry, it won't affect your reputation. The coyrighted text has now been deleted (and you've recreated the page without it), so you don't need to do anything else. Incidentally, it might be a good idea to still create future articles at WP:AFC for a while, if you intend to start them as blank pages with just an infobox. AfC avoids people tagging the pages for deletion as "unreferenced" or whatever before you've got started adding material properly, which can happen in mainspace. Arthur goes shopping (talk) 08:01, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- I should have caught that, Ailemadrah. When I glanced at the talk page last night, I assumed that you had written the content. It is never permissible to copy anything verbatim (except brief quoted passages) to any Wikipedia page, including even your sandbox, because to do so is publication which runs afoul of copyright.
- As an aside, you can create subpages (sandboxes) by simply putting a slash after your user page name followed by the subpage name. For example: user:Ailemadrah/example. If you do create article drafts this way, you should add {{Userspace draft}} or at least {{NOINDEX}} to the top of the page. - MrX 12:48, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- @Arthur goes shopping: @MrX: All seems to be well this morning, and another user, Jacqke, added more content, including the Battista photo, so it looks more like a real stub. (BTW, the way I like to work is to collect as many references as possible, then create a draft, so the way the Korman article is now unfolding is going to be a challenge for me. The only reason I created an infobox last night was to try to undo the damage I'd inadvertently done.) Thanks, Mr X, for the info on how to create sandbox subpages, but I'm very puzzled and rather disturbed by the fact that the Battista article is still in my sandbox. I would have thought that once it was published, it would be moved to its own Wikipedia space (which, of course, it was) and that my sandbox would be cleared for a new project (which it wasn't). In fact, all the newer additions and tweaks to the Battista article have automatically been added to the copy in my sandbox. In the absence of any information about this (at least, any that I could find), I was completely at a loss over how to save my Korman references, which I realize now I have to save in a file on my computer, not on Wikipedia. Could you please explain why my sandbox still contains my first article and whether it always will? Thanks again, and sorry to have gotten so upset last night. --Ailemadrah (talk) 14:42, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- I think that the draft article is still in your sandbox by design. All you need to do is blank the content (delete everything on the page), then you can use your main sandbox again. It's not very well documented, but these articles may be of some help WP:USER and Help:My sandbox.- MrX 14:54, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- Actually what is in User:Ailemadrah/sandbox is just this: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Ailemadrah/sandbox&redirect=no (click on it to see what is there)

- It is a redirect to the mainspace article Miriam Battista. You (Ailemadrah) can edit it and replace it with whatever you want.
- The page that you created about Miriam Battista is no longer at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Ailemadrah/sandbox&redirect=no - it has been moved to Miriam Battista. Arthur goes shopping (talk) 15:05, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Murray Korman
editold version of article with copyrighted text in has been deleted

---|
A tag has been placed on Murray Korman requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://broadway.cas.sc.edu/content/murray-korman. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here. If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lsmll 05:21, 11 July 2013 (UTC) Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but you removed a speedy deletion tag from a page you have created yourself. If you believe the page should not be deleted, you may contest the deletion by clicking on the button that says: Click here to contest this speedy deletion and appears inside the speedy deletion notice. This will allow you to make your case on the page's talk page. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. Thank you. みんな空の下 (トーク) 05:33, 11 July 2013 (UTC) |
- I did not see the speedy deletion tag when I added content to your article. I don't know if what I added will make a difference, but I tried. Good LuckJacqke (talk) 12:11, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
Another DYK?
editWould you like to see the Korman bio brought to the "Did you know?" section of the main page? If so, it should be nominated within five days of its creation. Binksternet (talk) 21:56, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- @Binksternet: That's a nice thought, but I feel strongly that it's very far from ready for wide notice. Saying in the opening section that "he specialized in photographing 'leg art and nudes because people looked at them and because he found women vain enough to desire that kind of picture'" (which is a quote cherry-picked from David S. Shields in Broadway Photographs) skews the entire article toward an emphasis on Korman's showgirl photos, which were only a portion of his work. The list of photos in the article makes it clear that the bulk of his work consisted of publicity photos of "legitimate" entertainers, many of them already famous. He also, according to Shields, opened a special studio for "his cafe society trade." I have very little time to devote to this at the moment, since I'm preparing to leave on vacation (I'll be gone Saturday through Monday), but I willl take a stab at the opening section. I also have the full text of the New Yorker profile, which I'll try to at least skim. Do you have a New Yorker subscription? If so, perhaps you could also comb the profile for quotes that will provide a more rounded picture of Korman. --Ailemadrah (talk) 23:45, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
- @Binksternet: I just tweaked the Korman article, and although I'm not totally thrilled with it, I'm happier than I was. I might be able to work more on it late tonight. Please take a look at my changes. Ailemadrah (talk) 00:38, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
- I understand about being busy getting ready for vacation! I don't have a subscription to the New Yorker, I was only poking at the snippets which are offered by Google Books, trying different search terms to see different parts of the article. That profile is, I sense, the best published biography of Korman, so it is essential to building the article. The things I got from the snippets were the locations of the two Manhattan studios, the elementary school, the birth name, and the family details. I am looking forward to you expanding the article with the full magazine profile at hand. Binksternet (talk) 00:52, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
- @Binksternet: I may add to the article a bit more today, but I think it works as it stands. I'll also be in touch with my contact to the Korman family to see if we can get permission for more images, including a head-shot of Korman. Please go over the article with your impeccable fine-tooth comb and fix anything that needs fixing - e.g., I seem to be unable to create short reference links to sources already cited in full, so I wound up simply repeating the full citations, an awkward fix. Also, I do have the exact page numbers for each of the New York citations - should those be included, and how does one add a page number to a short link?? --Ailemadrah (talk) 16:02, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
- At WP:DYK it says that a "Did you know?" article should be long enough, new enough, written with fair English, and fairly well referenced. "The DYK section publicizes new or expanded articles after an informal review. This publicity rewards editors for their contributions." DYK articles do not have to be totally polished or finished. I encourage taking this one to DYK in its present state.
- @Binksternet: Great! Would you do the DYK nomination? I just checked out the "how to," and it's more than I can handle at the moment. My suggestion for the hook is the fabulous quote from the New Yorker profile: "What Holbein was to the court of Henry VIII, Murray Korman is to Broadway." Another possibility is the fact that Korman was famous for photographing both socialites and strippers. But since I'm asking you to do this, you should decide on a hook yourself, of course! --Ailemadrah (talk) 17:04, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, I am familiar with the thoroughly Byzantine method which DYK requires of its contributors, so I will pick up your two hook suggestions and offer them for consideration. Binksternet (talk) 17:07, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

- For your references, there are several accepted styles described at Wikipedia:Citing sources. The way I do things, a method which I picked up from the very exacting Military history WikiProject, is to give a full citation for the first appearance of a print source, including the page or pages. The next instance of that source, but based on a different page, is given a briefer version of the cite. For instance, in the Korman bio, I added the following two citations:
- Appelbaum, Stanley (2011). Stars of the American Musical Theater in Historic Photographs. Courier Dover. pp. 158–159. ISBN 9780486149301.
- Appelbaum 2011, pp. 128–129.

I encourage taking this one to DYK in its present state.
- The second instance is the same book but different pages taken from it. Another option, if available, is to add a webpage link to the specific page content, which could look like this if I used Google Books as my source:
- Appelbaum, Stanley (2011). Stars of the American Musical Theater in Historic Photographs. Courier Dover. pp. 158–159. ISBN 9780486149301.

- For a citation that is used multiple times, the guideline at WP:NAMEDREFS will help sort things out. Binksternet (talk) 16:29, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for July 12
editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Murray Korman, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page New Yorker (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

DYK for Murray Korman
editOn 17 July 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Murray Korman, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that New York photographer Murray Korman was known for his portraits of strippers and socialites? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Murray Korman. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

RE: Bio of Marco Alverà, tedtalk speaker 2017
editHi Ailemadrah, I have recently submitted a draft containing the biography of Marco Alverà, CEO of Snam, the Italian natural gas infrastructure company (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Marco_Alver%C3%A0). Judging by what is written within the WikiProject Biography next to your nickname, I thought this content might be of interest to you. I was wondering if you could have a look and tell me what you think. Thank you in advance Anna Sai (talk) 15:40, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
Hi Ailemadrah! Thank you so much for your advice and support. In truth, before starting to draft the bio, I tried to find some category-specific notability criteria for businessmen. I haven't found anything on the matter, therefore I abided by basic criteria as listed in WP:BIO which require coverage by independent sources. I have been inspired by bios I found here. That said, why don't we "publish" the bio adding the stub template? That way we could let the community improve it since it is already "in good shape," as TonyTheTiger commented here, compared to many of the bios in the "Italian chief executives" category. Thank you, again! Anna Sai (talk) 10:32, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
