Martians Band Deletion
editHi, thanks for the advice on appealing for the overturn on the deletion decision. I've posted on the deletion review page, and as is asks am informing you. Cheers :)
Thanks re: welcome to Figure Skating
editHi there, thanks for the welcome. I'm not sure exactly what help I can give, but I'll try. I don't know much about different skaters' biographies, but I can tell the different jumps apart on TV without needing the announcer's help. I guess primarily I can help copyedit. --Tachikoma 03:15, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the well wishes. I'll see what I can do, though I should probably warn you that I have a bad tendency to spread myself too thinly, so that no one thing gets done as well as it could. --Tachikoma 03:39, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Please restore Ilia Kulik's bio to his page. I wrote that bio for both his website (I'm the webmaster and Wikipedia). It is my original work and I posted it. It has also been approved by Ilia himself. I know you didn't know this. You can email me at nancy@kuliks-krew.com.
Hi Fang_Aili, thank you for supporting me in my RfA, which was closed as successful today with a finaly tally of (56/0/3). I will be very careful at first to avoid any mistakes. Please feel free to leave a message in my talk page if you have any comments/suggestions about me in the future. Once again, thank you! --WinHunter (talk) 09:14, 4 September 2006 (UTC) |
Ellis Duell Deletion
edit- I am curious as to the nature of the whole deletion process. Would it be possible to restore the article on Ellis Duell, past Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Hunger Project, in favor of a more above-board deletion discussion and debate? Thank you for your time.Smeelgova 20:21, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Sure. What do you think of undeletion and AfD? I wasn't exactly sure what to do with the article since its (apparent) subject had requested deletion. I'd appreciate some feedback from some users familiar with that kind of thing, too. Let me know if an AfD is ok with you. --Fang Aili talk 21:58, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick response, and your suggestion for undeletion and AfD is most acceptable. I as well am relatively unfamiliar with exactly the procedures involved with AfD, but I'm willing to give it a shot and see what happens. I think there is also a Wikipedia Policy of some sort regarding individuals' input to their own biographical articles, if indeed that was the actual person that contacted you.Smeelgova 01:35, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Ilia Kulik Deletion
editI'm sorry, I'm not familiar with this talk lists. I am originator and author of Ilia's bio. I did it for his website (I am the webmaster)- his agents use it for program bios, I use it for Ilia's PR as I see fit. I can't see why it came down without a note to the originator (me) or the website from which you thought it was stolen (me). Now I have an entire process to negotiate and hours to redo it. Can you please put it back up. I can be reached at nancy@kuliks-krew.com.

Userfy question
editHi Erica, You've helped me before, so I thought I'd come to you with a question about a bit of a weird situation. While new article patrolling today, I came across a vanity bio that looked like it was appropriate for userfying. The article is Kevin Scott. So, I was bold and went ahead and userfied. After doing that, the author moved the text back to the main space article about himself, and then redirected his userpage to the main space article. That seemed to me quite inappropriate, so I left a note on his talk page suggesting that what he'd done was inappropriate vanity, and that he should move it back. My question for you is two-fold...one, I wanted to check with an admin to make sure I'd done things correctly. Second, assuming he doesn't respond, what's the next course of action? Re-userfy? AfD? Your guidance would be appreciated! Akradecki 03:53, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Can you take a look at vandalism at The Leoncavallo F1 Racing Team?
editHi Erica, Can you have a look at this page? The author keeps removing the AfD tag. He's been warned, but someone with admin powers needs to step in and consider a block. Thanks! Akradecki 22:16, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hi again, thanks for looking into that. Turns out, that AfD has now been vandalized (blanked) six times, and the author seems to merely have avoided the block by using a couple of different IP addresses. The debate has flared up, and has spurred at least two new user accounts whose only edits have been to flame the debate. I've tried to keep it on-task, but it's a bit frustrating how little some people respect this project. Oh well. Thanks for listening...I guess I just needed to vent for a minute. Have a great weekend. Akradecki 01:38, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for the offer of protection. Don't know if that's really needed at this point, but I do have an AfD procedural question that does apply. The folks that have been putting up such a fight to keep the article - they wrote it - are now asking that it be taken down "in the shortest delay." Does an AfD have to run the full 7 days, or can it be closed early when, as in this case, the author asks that it be deleted? The debate is at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Leoncavallo F1 Racing Team Thanks! Akradecki 02:29, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Spoken articles
editHi, Fang
I am very interested in the Spoken Wikipedia Project. I have Windows XP and Office 2003. I can copy and paste an article into Office Word and using the language bar make the Text to Speech function read the article and in the same time record what the computer says using Audacity then save it (ogg format) and export it to Wikipedia. Is this legal?
By the way, I can't find a program that plays ogg format. Can you tell me about one, please?
T-rex

Milwaukee
editHi - could use your input at Milwaukee, WI, esp regarding some of the discussion on colloquialisms. --ZimZalaBim (talk) 22:50, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Hey, there -- on 3 September you blocked 202.74.164.3 for vandalism (12 week block); as you're probably aware, that's the IP address for a college. I've run into at least one apparently good user (Hamedog) who's being impacted by this, so I was wondering if you'd have any objections to converting the block to anon-only? Science fiction vs. science-fiction
editWhy are you ignorantly screwing up so many articles? Don't you understand English grammar? A science-fiction writer writes science fiction. One has a hyphen, the other doesn't. Now I'm going to have to go clean up some of the messes you've made. Please stop doing it NOW! Hayford Peirce 00:37, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- Agree with Hayford Peirce. "Science fiction" when used as a compound modifier is hyphenated. Please revert your bot's grammatically inaccurate changes. -- Tenebrae 03:49, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- Then you're even more ignorant than I thought. No one is trying to change the article called "Science Fiction" to "Science-Fiction". We're simply trying to tell you that a compound modifier takes a hyphen. Therefore, in, let's say, the article called "Science Fiction", there could be a sentence that correctly says: "Science fiction is a type of fiction written by science-fiction writers." Don't you understand the difference? If not, how can you possibly be an administrator?! Hayford Peirce 04:52, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- Just to clarify to other users and possibly to an admin, given User:Fang Aili's defenseive reponses, Hayford Peirce above is responding to Fang Aili's comments at User_talk:Hayford_Peirce#SF.
- Fang Aili, I understand English may not be your first language, but your comments there fly in the face of concrete, black-and-white rules of English grammar. Please keep an open mind, please read the article at the compound modifier link, and please cooperate with the rest of the Wiki community. You made 500 or so bot changes that need to be reversed.
- There's no reason for this to escalate. I can tell you that no mediator or admin is going to be on the side of bad grammar.-- Tenebrae 17:39, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- CC of Fang Aili response on Tenebrae talk page
- Actually English is my first language. And as this is a wiki, you may go ahead and change things as you wish; I will not reverse my edits, but I won't edit war with you either. My opinion is that "science fiction" does not have to be hyphenated, and I also don't agree that this is a "black and white" rule of English grammar. (Why don't we see "military-fiction" and "crime-fiction" and the like?) Additionally there seemed to be a consensus towards non-hyphenation, as the instances of "science fiction" far outnumbered "science-fiction", even when used as modifiers. As I said to Hayford, I don't wish to argue about this, so this will be my last message. Cheers. --Fang Aili talk 18:26, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- In response to your comment on my talk page: There is no consensus on "science fiction", used as a compound modifier, being Ok with no hyphen — that's just incorrect grammar elsewhere that would eventually be cleaned up, as generally happens with grammar on Wikipedia. Secondly, yes, a phrase such as "military-fiction authors" would indeed have a hyphen.
- Finally, you made some 500 grammatically incorrect chanages to Wikipedia, and you expet your fellow editors to have to go in and one-by-one clean-up after you? That is the kind of disruptive behavior that is considered a major breach of Wikipedia etiquette. If you refuse to clean up your own mess I'll have no choice but to seek an Admin intervene. A 500-edit mess that one refuses to address sounds like grounds for banning. --Tenebrae 18:35, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- You wonder why "crime fiction" isn't written "crime-fiction"? It is, correctly, if you write "John Dickson Carr was a crime-fiction writer." Also, if you do, for instance, a search of The New York Times you will find that that august institution uses the phrase "science-fiction writer." For instance, in the March, 2006, obituary of a noted Polish author we have: Stanislaw Lem, a Polish science-fiction writer who, in novels like Solaris and His Master's Voice, contemplated man's place in the universe in sardonic and sometimes bleak terms, died yesterday in Krakow, Poland. He was 84. There are dozens of other examples. Hayford Peirce 18:38, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- Fang Aili, they're right: compound adjectives get hyphens. Guys, if you want community concensus on this, it would help to have Fang Aili's responses here. When you respond to him here, please copy his response on your talk page and paste it before your next response. Either that, or the discussion needs to take place in a centralized location. --Chris Griswold (☎☓) 19:00, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

- Well, are you going to clean up all the incorrect edits you've made? If so, then we'll stop leaving messages. If not, then one of us (or more) will report you to some other administrator. No one, including me, likes to admit that he/she was wrong about something. In some cases, however, we have to. Please clean up your edits and the matter will be closed. Hayford Peirce 19:31, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

- User:Fang Aili really is behaving badly, and all the more so because she's an admin and should be setting an example. Any additional comments or evidence that you need from me to pursue this, I'm at your disposal. I don't want to make an admin-enemy, but it's bad for the community in the long run if rank-and-file editors don't stand up to bad apples. --Tenebrae 02:34, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
- Can I put a note in here? I'm not at all involved in the subject, but I'm rather surprised at the tone this has taken. You're quick to jump on Fang Aili's behavior, but have you said the same thing to Hayford Peirce? Go back and look how this subject was brought up...the first sentence was: "Why are you ignorantly screwing up so many articles?". That's pretty uncivil, and didn't do anything to set a constructive tone for discussion. Honestly, if someone came at me like that, I don't know that I'd have been motivated to respond well, either. I think everyone needs to take a step back, take a deep breath and get on with making WP great. Akradecki 18:19, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
- You're absolutely correct in that the initial incivility was not right, but Fang Aili is an Admin, and needs to set a tone; that's part of what leadership is about. Her behavior over a simple grammatical issue, particularly her refusal to admit she's wrong (see the standards: AP Stylebook, Strunk & White) and clean up her honest mistake shows a lack of taking responsibility for one's own actions. Proper grammar and responsibility are two of the things that make WP great. Honestly, as one can see from the timestamps, there's been time for each party to catch his or her respective breaths. Fang Aili's avoidance of the subject or her responsbility is genuine issue that makes me question whether she has the maturiy or the judgment to continue as as Admin. -- Tenebrae 19:17, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Korean Characters
editHi Erica. Remember a few weeks ago I asked you to look at some "Chinese" characters someone wrote on my home page? You said they were Korean. They are. I found an on-line translator for Korean and it seems they mean "this man is not really a man at all". I find it more amusing than insulting that someone would choose to write that on my page in such a cryptic manner. Admin coaching
editHiya, Fang Aili (does anyone shorten that to anything?). Recently I was approached [1] by some person who wanted admin coaching. I accepted, but what exactly am I supposed to do with them? I was gonna ask Petros who co-ordinates the programme but your name just appeared at the top of my watchlist, so you're the lucky recipient of this message. -- Steel 21:09, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
Re: Racism
editI don't recall saying anyone was actually "whitebred," I said that's an image they want the city to portray through an article. As far as racism, I'll stop accusing people of it when they stop asserting their race privlege (i.e. saying phrases used by Blacks in Milwaukee aren't "legit" enough to be considered colloquailisms).
But I've noticed that you seem to be awfully on edge whenever someone mentions the slightest possibility of a racial bias... if you have a guilty conscious or whatever personal issues, deal with them on your own. Don't put messages on my page telling me to stop telling the truth just because you don't want to see it. --Illwauk 18:28, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Again, saying that the logic one's using is racist is much different than calling a person themself a racist. I have been as clear as I possibly can about that, so I will not apologize, nor will I make any adjustments to my stances. If you feel personally offended, then, as I've said, that's for you to deal with. I've said in no uncertain terms that I'm here to get the truth out there and I'm completely indifferent to what anyone's personal feelings are about me. Therefore, your threat of pulling "rank" means nothing to me I have done nothing outside of the standards of wikipedia (although if any of my dealings with the wikipedia staff in the past are any indication, I wouldn't exactly expect them to be objective either). But like I said, do whatever you want. I'm not gonna lose sleep over being put out of some online "clubhouse" (if it were to come to that) --Illwauk 22:28, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

LOTR article
editHi Erica- I noticed the LOTR synopsis disappear as well, and then come back. I assume it's because the article is getting alot of action right now. I'm new at editing and made a small change to the first section a little while ago. I've noticed that articles large enough to have sections and tocs, such as the LOTR one, often don't have a heading naming the top (intro/synopsis) section, and seem to never have a section edit link. Do you know if that's how things are supposed to be? I've been tempted a couple times to add a top section heading to articles, but wasn't sure if I should. -Eric (talk) 17:25, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Got your response--thanks! Another advice question, if you don't mind: Would it have been better for me just to enter your discussion on the LOTR talk page rather than create a post on yours? I'm trying to learn the most convenient way to talk with other users. Sometimes the back-and-forth between each others' talk pages seems cumbersome. -Eric (talk) 18:06, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

J&P
editI would like to raise with you the issue of you recent deletion of my article on [J&P]. I summarize my argument below:
J&P is a household name in the Middle East having build most of the infrastructure in several countries, information which I started outlining in my article. For a country the size of Cyprus, it has had an impact similar, if not greater, to what Nokia has for Finland. Or Royal Dutch Shell to Holland. To put this in perspective for you, the figure of 14,000 employees translates to roughly 5% of the total employed population. It has a turnover of more than £1 billion. That’s greater than 10% of the GDP of Cyprus. If companies such as Crest Nicholson, McCarthy & Stone and Crosby Homes some of which are miniscule in comparison (definitely in real terms, more so in relative terms) are listed in Wikipedia I don’t see why larger companies that have had a more significant global impact (albeit in other regions of the world) should not be featured. One could interpret this as a double standards policy favoring companies such as those I site above on the grounds that they based in more influential countries.
Please note this was not an attempt to advertise J&P as I have no affiliations to this company whatsoever and in fact I morally agree that wikipedia should not be used as a platform for company advertising. The information I included was very similar to what's posted on the construction companies I site above. In fact I went a step further and used the infobox template to present this. As you might notice from my other articles too, I put quite a lot of effort to source independent references (one of which I included in the article) on the figures stated and the company’s international ranking.

Sociological Research Association
editYou deleted the page I contributed, the "Sociological Research Association". A valid and important organization. Why? 01:54, 6 October 2006 (UTC)October 2153EDT
Bellagio99 (talk · contribs)
I don't understand why took it upon yourself to delete. The SRA may be small (actually 245 members), but so is the US Senate or the Royal Society. In each case, these are elite organizations. The SRA is where the most elite sociologists in North America meet to network and to exchange ideas. It has had a long existence since the 1930s and at times of stress, has served as an alternative professional organization to the dominant American Sociological Association. I am past president, and will be happy to tell you my name privately.
As I entered the "Sociological Research Association" directly into Wikipedia, and it is now deleted, is there any way that I (or you) can undelete this entry and modify it as per your suggestions to show its importance? Bellagio99 17:30, 7 October 2006 (UTC).
Ms Aili, thanks for restoring SRA post, in principle. I went to edit to add the importance of SRA, as you suggested, but the entry wasn't in Wikipedia. I hope that I can just wait a few hours and do it later. But if not, I would appreciate your checking your reposting. (And yes, I did hit F5 and Ctrl-F5: possibly I don't understand Wikipedia fully, and these things take time). 21:20, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Erica, I'm sorry to hear that you're under stress right now. If you need to take a break off the Wiki, that's OK. Take care of yourself first. Hopefully the cloud that you are under will pass quickly, and you'll feel better soon.
P.S. I really do want to contribute more to your Figure Skating WikiProject, but I'm currently preoccupied with health-related subjects right now. I'll contribute more when I can. I figured out one way that I can contribute: translating content from French language sites for addition to English Wikipedia.

I forgot to mention that I am recovering and feeling better, thanks. Hope you feel better soon! --Kyoko 20:29, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
- I tried watching reruns of the old BSG on SciFi channel, and they seemed to take the whole idea of humanity on the brink of extinction as a joke. It was just bizarre. Campy is a good word for it. I forget where I saw this quote, but it goes something like this: "Old BSG: The Cylons are coming! Run like hell! — ooh, casino planet!"
- One of my favorite characters in the new BSG is Boomer/Sharon Valerii, because she's so complex. In the old show, Boomer is a guy, and he hardly has any screen time. I do like the old show's intro theme though. --Kyoko 13:04, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
GA Icon
editI assume you're referring to the little green plus, similar to the star that appears of Featured Articles? That was deleted a long time ago, actually, there are some editors who really don't like any type of "metadata", which is apparantly what is used to put the star on any article that is in the "featured article" catagory. The consensus in the GA project after the GA star was deleted was that the reason that the FA star wasn't deleted was because the FA project is large and well entrenched in Wikipedia, so they would just wait until GA was larger and more "legitimate" before trying again. --PresN 18:50, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi. You just speedy deleted Snowbooks. I was reviewing the article for possible speedy at the same time you were. I did find some information that could potentially bring the article up to stub. See this on printing A.A. Milne book. Do you have any objections to me restoring it? — ERcheck (talk) 13:22, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the go ahead and removing the G11 tag. I've reworked it and stub tagged it. — ERcheck (talk) 13:56, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
Table Title Background Colors
editAlthough not exactly aesthetically pleasing, I think it would be nice to use the color-coding corresponding to the different disciplines as used by the ISU in their result tables, i.e. blue for mens, pink for ladies, green for pairs, and yellow for ice dancing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Geoboe84 (talk • contribs)
