This party is officially dedicated to you, for your GA review of Political party. It was pretty dispiriting to wait 7 months just to get a review, and even bleaker when it was getting multiple rounds of engagement that didn't look like they were getting it any closer to being a GA. I know it took time to go through such a complicated article, and I'm really grateful that you did! Thank you :) - Astrophobe (talk) 22:09, 20 September 2021 (UTC) |

Riley's Lock
Can't understand your recent edit. Can you explain? Tim riley talk 21:05, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- Tim riley Because the GA review was not transcluded onto the talk page, I believed that you had simply added the GA template onto the article without actually reviewing it. I see now that you have in fact given the article a proper review, and I have reverted my own edit, but in the future, please add "|page=1" to the GA template at the top of the page so that other users can confirm that a review took place. — GhostRiver 21:07, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you. We must both be more careful in future! Tim riley talk 21:09, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Many thanks for your work on the article Harry Pollitt. I've added the requested additional examples of surveillance you requested which I believe closes off the remaining open points for this article. GhostRiver, I have addressed and incorporated all of your recommendations into my "1914 Lubin vault fire" article. Based on the assorted article topics on this Talk page, you are obviously a busy, busy reviewer. When you have a chance, though, please take another look at my article. FYI: I am currently in process of reformatting and simplifying some source citations in my article based on suggestions sent to me by "BLZ". Thanks. Strudjum (talk) 19:38, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot again for reviewing my article and making your very helpful recommendations. Publishing an article
Hi there. I've read over the Ernest Lee Johnson article you have been working on and really like how it reads. May I ask why you have not moved it over to the main space yet as it looks good to go? Thanks. Inexpiable (talk) 09:55, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Inexpiable, thank you for the compliment! The reason I have not moved it to mainspace yet is because I am not finished adding what I would consider the bare minimum of information – for example, the part about his execution does not actually say the day that he dies, and I need to include that the governor refused to stay the execution. I had much grander plans for moving this to mainspace that were derailed by some personal matters, but today I intend to add that information back and send something out that is not perfect but still sufficient. — GhostRiver 16:54, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

It's an awesome idea, but I don't think I'll be able to right now. Practically speaking, I've been really busy lately (I knew that was coming, which is why I got so many reviews in before it happened), so I wouldn't have time even if I wanted to. Also, next time I do a featured article, I'm hoping for it to be Willie Mays. Last time I nominated it, it failed for lack of attention - no one made any comments about it I didn't fix, people just didn't review it. That was kind of frustrating; I think it soured me on the FA process for right now. (This isn't a criticism of you, by the way; it's just a rant in general.) I guess what I'm saying is A) I'm probably too busy right now, and B) next time I try an FA, it'll probably be Mays again first.
Of course, if you want to go ahead and work on it, feel free to do so! Posey's my favorite catcher, and I'd love to see it hit FA status. Still can't believe he's retiring already! Maybe the rigors of the position were getting to him (something I'm sure you understand...). Speaking of catching, have you ever read any of Chris Coste's books? I read one of them, it was pretty neat! Being a Phillies fan, you'd probably especially enjoy it! Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 11:50, 8 November 2021 (UTC)

GAs
Hi. Thank you for taking the time to look at my recent GA reviews. Quick question - what are QFs? Mark83 (talk) 16:21, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hi Mark83! "QF" stands for "quickfail", which refers to any time an article is failed without leaving the typical seven-day grace period for a nominator to address comments. There's nothing wrong with quickfailing an article – especially in cases of plagiarism or original research, it's much better to fail the article outright than to spend time and energy trying to make comments yourself, but from a backlog coordinator perspective, it's helpful to note what's being failed outright versus failed due to an unresponsive nominator. — GhostRiver 16:25, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- I knew it would be something obvious! Thank you for the explanation Mark83 (talk) 16:29, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Changes addressed; thanks for the review! Yeah, I've been busy as well too lately, as well as stagnating on an article about Ned Garver - having his autobiography makes it easy to find information for the article, tough to figure out how to present everything. - Sanfranciscogiants17 That's how I've been feeling about Shane Victorino; I've been expanding the article in my sandbox and about the only parts I haven't written yet are the years where he went to the World Series, because it requires going through a lot of cruft and brief mentions in the Inquirer. Someday I'll also start real work on Roy Halladay, particularly since I got The Rotation for Christmas, but that'll require me to get sad again. — GhostRiver 16:49, 16 January 2022 (UTC)

"hit wrong button while finding glasses"
I noticed you accidentally reverted Nick Moyes' edit increasing the max archive size, and then undid your own edit saying you "accidentally hit the wrong button while trying to find your glasses". I'm not trying to say that you did it on purpose only to revert it with an excuse, but I'm trying to figure out how you accidentally hit the button to revert someone's edit when you're trying to find your glasses. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:31, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- Blaze Wolf I have the rollback permission. Any errant keyboard hit can tap the button to automatically undo something. My laptop was open, I dropped my glasses, leaned over to pick them up, and my elbow hit my open laptop. — GhostRiver 14:35, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- Ah ok. Like I said I wasn't trying to say you did it on purpose, just a bit confused as to how that would work. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:40, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

The WikiCup
Neither the DYK for Trent Frederic nor for Cody Bellinger qualifies for points in the WikiCup. This is because they qualified for DYK as a result of becoming a GA, rather than because they were created or 5x expanded by you. Have a look at the WikiCup scoring page. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 14:05, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- Cwmhiraeth With all due respect, such a rule seems nonsensical. It is not intuitive – those articles went through the DYK process the same as every other article, and a considerable amount of work was put in to make them eligible. In many cases, they fell just under the 5x expansion, and adding that extra bit would be purple prose for the sake of purple prose. Additionally, DYK is already viewed by myself and several other editors as an unduly frustrating process, and limiting the variety of articles that can be submitted for Cup points is a sure way to discourage submissions and participation in the DYK process. I understand that the rules cannot change mid-competition, but I hope this will be reconsidered in future years, particularly because the scoring page offers no rationale why a GA DYK is somehow less valid than another variety. — GhostRiver 15:12, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I agree completely with GhostRiver here, I also found this was unintuitive, confusing, and frustrating. Why should DYKs from a GA promotion not count? Are they somehow less valid than other submissions? This feels to me like a penalty being applied to those who choose to do GAs as opposed to FAs. I would like to see it changed in the future. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 15:44, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- Apart from nominating them for DYK, no extra work is required when a GA appears at DYK. Compare that with the effort of creating a 1500 character plus article or expanding an article fivefold, and still having the necessity of nominating it for DYK. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:35, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- Cwmhiraeth I still don't believe your logic holds. What is "the necessity" of nominating an article for DYK, exactly? And are you suggesting that less of an effort is involved in creating a 1500-character article than taking an article to GA? Frankly, I prefer taking GAs to DYK because I find that there are better hook options in a more complete article. Isaac Ratcliffe, which I wrote two days ago, is fairly complete in its current state, but required significantly less effort and offers far fewer interesting hooks than, say, Jayson Werth, which I had the audacity to only expand fourfold instead of fivefold. If I wanted to take the article to DYK as a reward for my expansion efforts, my only avenue was through the GA process, because realistically I could not add any more information to expand it fivefold, even though I took the article from 1,500 words and 29 references to 6,100 words and 152 references. If the reward is supposed to be creating a non-stub article, then points should be awarded for doing just that (I'm surprised that article creation does not already award points), but the reward is for going through the DYK process, and that process is the same for new and recently-promoted articles. Additionally, as I mentioned earlier, it is not immediately obvious to Cup participants that going through what is by all means a standard DYK process should be excluded from points. This discussion and this discussion, for instance, involve editors either assuming that DYK points can be claimed for GAs that pass through the process, or editors express their shock at finding out that this is not the case. This, I think, is the more serious issue, that while many of the other scoring rules (e.g. a GAR only counts once the article is passed or failed) are intuitive, that the rule around DYK is insufficiently advertised to participants, as is the rationale behind it. — GhostRiver 04:31, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
- I didn't make the rule, but I do think it is logical, and contestants should study the scoring rules to use them to their best advantage. You can of course receive points for creating or fivefold expanding an article and nominating it for DYK, even if it has become a GA before it appears on the main page as a DYK, but not for the article appearing at DYK as a consequence of becoming a GA - it has had its WikiCup points as a new GA. Features for new users coming soon
Hello.
Although you've not been very active there as yet, I see you're currently listed as a host at the Teahouse. So I wanted to make sure you're aware of the imminent rollout of new Growth Team Features which every new account will be getting by default. Each users will soon see a new 'Homepage' tab next to their User page. It contains two main elements which might impact on your involvement - and you'd be welcome to get involved and help out directly with one of them.
- Firstly, they will be offered a range of 'suggested edits', and encouraged to make simple improvements to pages that interest them. (Being aware of this feature would be helpful for all Teahouse hosts if you're likely to offer advice on tasks for them to start out doing.)
- There's also a 'Your impact' box to show them how many people have seen the pages they've just edited.
- Finally, each new user is randomly assigned a 'mentor' from a list of friendly, experienced editors, like yourself. If they get stuck, they can ask a question directly to them via a Your mentor box, and hopefully get a swift, friendly answer from that mentor. Currently, this feature is given to 2% of new users, but it's set to increase to around 10% in the very near future.
To spread the load on our current list of around 65 mentors, I'm reaching out to ask if you'd like to help out and sign up as one? The workload is relatively small; User Panini! reports receiving four questions a month, on average, all of which were simple ones of the type we already get at the Teahouse, whilst I've had just one in the last 3 weeks. To view a list of every question asked of all mentors over the last 14 days, click here.
If becoming a mentor and being available to help new users on their first few days here interests you - just as have done at the Teahouse in the past - then please consider signing up at Growth Team features/Mentor list. But please only do so if you are genuinely willing to be available to help. Existing users can already 'opt-in' to seeing the Newcomer Homepage features via their Preferences.
Thank you! Nick Moyes (talk) 12:36, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello! I saw the failed review of the good article process and decided to fix the article anyway. I tried to nominate the article once again. I don't know if you have time to review but if it remains in the queue for a while maybe you can get to it one day. Thanks for your time. Jorahm (talk) 20:24, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- Jorahm I don't think I'll be able to take on any GA reviews until at least the start of March, as I have fallen behind on many of my personal projects. I make no promises either way as to whether I will re-review Atari v. Amusement World in March, but I do hope to see it reach GA someday. — GhostRiver 16:03, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
- I understand and thanks for the first review anyway! Be well. Jorahm (talk) 17:47, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
WikiCup 2022 March newsletter
And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
- Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
- AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
- Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
- GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
- Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
- SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
- Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.
These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.
Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The human at the other end
Hello. I have withdrawn my RfA as it appeared to be quickly losing support. I can accept constructive opposes but I feel I have to tell you, "but that is a lesson instilled in my high school students (some of whom are 14 or 15 years old)" really was painful to read. It felt like a twisting of the knife, with no purpose, your point was already made. It's the only thing that hurt, I take responsibility for all I have done, and not done. But, I felt remiss if I didn't remind you that there is a human on the other end of those usernames. Ifnord (talk) 03:53, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi @GhostRiver: Howdy. Reference 7 on Florence Merriam Bailey doesn't link properly. I was just happening to read the review and saw the mistake. There is a script which shows references that are good or bad or not linked and so on. It is really helpful. Hope that helps. Great article by the way. Beautifully written. scope_creepTalk 11:49, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- scope_creep Thank you for the compliment, and for letting me know! Looks like I misspelled "Oehser". Should be fixed now. I will get back to you about the FAC sooner, as that's always more than the one-on-one of a GA review. C/e for Scythe and Wingspan
Hi, I am VickKiang and thanks for your c/e for Scythe! However, I noticed that in your sandbox it seems that you are creating an article for Wingspan, which I have also worked on extensively as it is already one. From what I can see, you have a lot of useful content there, so if possible could you possibly merge some of the contents into the present article? Thanks for your help. VickKiang (talk) 21:54, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi VickKiang, I'm sorry I took so long to get back to you. Bipolar disorder doesn't seem to care about my other obligations. Most of the articles in my sandbox already exist; I like to start from a blank slate to keep my head clear, as I've found that trying to edit articles on the fly can make me distracted and confused. For example, Cliff Lee is already a GA that I'm preparing for FAC, so I have a half-written update in my sandbox that will eventually be transferred over to the main article. Hope that clears things up, and when my mental health begins to improve, I'll finish my c/e of Scythe. — GhostRiver 21:15, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 May newsletter
The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.
Our top scorers in round 2 were:
- Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
- AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
- Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
- Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
- Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
- Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
- Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.
The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Thank you for you kind approach
With Talk:John Johnson (safety)/GA1. We've got a new editor, bold as they might be, so that's a great place to start. In mentoring them I've tried to explain that asking for GA status is not the same as building to GA status, but I suspect they are young, and they are certainly new around here. Very much appreciate your phrasing and encouragement. BusterD (talk) 19:13, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
- No problem, BusterD. I started editing when I was young as well, and I never quickfail a GA without providing an extensive rationale, particularly if the editor does seem to care about improving the page but doesn't know the best way to go about it. — GhostRiver 19:16, 6 April 2022 (UTC)
- I also appreciate your message at the top of this page. I definitely took all of your edits to heart - and it's funny, because the biggest issue that you had with the article (that it doesn't focus enough on Angelo LaMarca himself, but rather on Peter Weinberger's kidnapping and murder) was something I was deeply concerned about before even proposing the article. Well, now my fears have been confirmed lol. I chose to name the article after the kidnapper because I modeled it strongly after the article for Richard Hauptmann, although there is also an article for the Lindbergh kidnapping. Knowing that, I was wondering what you think the best move forward might be. I can rename the article "Kidnapping of Peter Weinberger" and then edit it to have less of a focus on Angelo LaMarca, or I can try to dig up some more information on Angelo LaMarca's life and include an "Early life" or "Personal life" section. (To my knowledge, there are morsels of information out there, especially in contemporaneous newspapers.) I'm honestly not sure what the best move here is, but I am fully willing to do whichever is best.
Again, though, I really hope you feel better. Take it easy and take care of yourself. <3 Afddiary (talk) 20:57, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for reaching out, Afddiary. Although in its current state I think that the article makes more sense if it is named Kidnapping of Peter Weinberger, I would be reluctant to make drastic edits to reduce the influence LaMarca holds in said article (I'm also not entirely sure why Hauptmann has his own article when Lindbergh kidnapping exists, feels like a WP:BLP1E issue, but that's one for a different time). Even if it were renamed, I'd still like some background on LaMarca, at the very least his birthdate and hometown, as those are already in the infobox. So... I guess "add an early life section" is probably the path I'd go with. — GhostRiver 21:13, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hey there - and I apologize that it took so long for me to make these edits, but I re-named the article "Kidnapping of Peter Weinberger" and also made some minor edits to the layout in order to help the article to fit its new title more appropriately. I definitely feel better about it now. Although I have also added an "Early life" section, I still need to finish making your other recommended edits - but other than that, I think it is in much better shape. Thank you again, SO much, for your recommendations and your help with it. Take care! Afddiary (talk) 21:11, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

Your DYK nomination of Nick Schmaltz
I have some slight issues with / questions about your hook facts at Template:Did you know nominations/Nick Schmaltz. No need to rush to work on this, but I wanted to mention this in case you missed/clicked through the ping. (I tend to forget about pings very quickly if I don't act on them right away). If you don't feel like answering within a few days, that's not a problem for me. Just ping me when you do respond. —Kusma (talk) 09:25, 15 April 2022 (UTC)
