DYK for Amuse Museum
On 14 June 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Amuse Museum, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the Amuse Museum in Asakusa, Tokyo, houses more than 30,000 pieces of old clothing, some of which are rags? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Amuse Museum. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
Thanks, if you get a moment then give out a barnstar today. Victuallers (talk) 07:28, 14 June 2015 (UTC)
Workshopping bureaucrat activity requirements
- (Message to all bureaucrats)
There is an ongoing discussion about implementing some kind of standards for administrative and bureaucrat activity levels; and activity requirements for bureaucrats have been explored several times in the past. I've prepared a draft addition to Wikipedia:Bureaucrats that would require at least one bureaucratic action every five years to retain the bureaucrat permission.
In the past, I've been hesitant of such proposals but I believe that if the bureaucrat group as a whole is seen to be actively engaged, the community may be more willing to grant additional tasks to the position.
Please let me know your thoughts. I'm not sure if this actually applies to any of us, but if you have not acted as a bureaucrat in over five years, you might consider requesting removal of the permission or otherwise signalling that you intend to return to bureaucrat activity. –xenotalk 14:22, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Hiroshi Itō
The article Hiroshi Itō has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Voice actor 伊藤浩資 from Yokohama (born March 16, also from 81 Produce), who was originally added in 2008 because he had some voice roles.[1] Since then he has not voiced in any major roles, and is not notable for the ones he has on there or on JA wikipedia. He is also no longer on the 81 Produce roster.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. AngusWOOF (bark • sniff) 23:00, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Words spelled with the Japanese full stop
Hey Nihonjoe,
It is good to see you are around a little more again recently. Can I ask you a question as an old friend who knows more of Japan than my just a little bit? Am I more or less right that the Japanese full stop is not worth its trouble when carrying it into English titles and running text?
What do you think of my recent addition to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Japan-related articles.

Talk:Sea of Japan Suggested Rules of Engagement
Hi, Nihonjoe
Template: Liancourt Rocks probation related articles is wrong. WP:NCGN says nothing about IHO. This message is misleading as if IHO decides the name in Wikipedia.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 23:41, 31 July 2015 (UTC)
- Not directly, no, but since it is the accepted (by most countries) international organization which names bodies of water like the Sea of Japan, whatever name it uses is going to be the most "widely accepted English name, in a modern context". I would consider it falling under the "Many governments have an agency to standardize the use of place names, such as the United States Board on Geographic Names (see BGN below), the Geographical Names Board of Canada, etc.", even though it's an international organization. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 00:01, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
- No. BGN is one of many criteria to determine the widely accepted name. IHO is not in the guideline because the name listed in the standard is not necessarily "widely accepted name". Sea of Japan is listed as "Japan Sea", East China Sea is listed as "Eastern China Sea" and so on.[2] You are forging your own guideline. We should abide by the guideline. Instead of referring to IHO, WP:NCGN should be referred to in the rule.―― Phoenix7777 (talk) 00:42, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

Naming lameness
I would accept it as naming lameness if the suggested name was lame. And yet, the state of Virginia and the state of New York have already passed bills recognizing the other name of East Sea for the sea between Korea and Japan. The name "Sea of Japan" was popularized in a 1929 publication of the "Limits of the Oceans and the Seas" by the International Hydrographic Organization, which was released while Korea was under Japanese occupation. As such, many Koreans associate the name ‘Sea of Japan with a long period of occupation and violence.
It is not lame to talk about history with facts. What is lame is to deny alternate perspectives and insist absurdly on just your own.
Maybe we can call that "absurd insistence". Please do not engage in "absurd insistence". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jisunlim (talk • contribs) 07:31, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

There were a lot of votes and comments to go through along with the enormous amount of content on the crat chat talk page. I never imagined that my RfA would be at all contentious or have such a big turnout. Implementation of Wikipedia:Bureaucrats#Bureaucrat activity requirements
Following a community discussion ending August 2015, consensus was reached to remove the bureaucrat permissions of users who have not participated in bureaucrat activity for three years.
“ | Bureaucrats are expected to exercise the duties granted by their role while remaining cognizant of relevant community standards concerning their tasks. In addition to the "Inactive bureaucrat accounts" requirements, if a bureaucrat does not participate in bureaucrat activity[1] for over three years, their bureaucrat permissions may be removed. The user must be notified on their talk page and by email one month before the removal, and again and a few days prior to the removal. If the user does not return to bureaucrat activity, another bureaucrat may request the removal of permissions at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Permissions removed for not meeting bureaucrat activity requirements may be re-obtained through a new request for bureaucratship.
|
” |
To assist with the implementation of this requirement, please see Wikipedia:Bureaucrat activity. Modeled after Wikipedia:Inactive administrators and similar to that process, the log page will be created on 1 September 2015. Bureaucrats who have not met the activity requirements as of that date will be notified by email (where possible) and on their talk page to advise of the pending removal.
If the notified user does not return to bureaucrat activity and the permissions are removed, they will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFB. Removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon the affected user in any way.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. –xenotalk

No, I think my edit was justified. One cannot cite the idea that the Sad and Rabid Puppies are entirely unrelated to a Puppy; and it is clearly pertinent that the Puppies were described as a "bunch of white guys".
I still also feel that the quote from Gallo is perhaps given undue prominence. Pinkbeast (talk) 03:30, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
- The two groups were run by different people with no coordination between them. Both groups have stated as much. As for the puppies being described as a "bunch of white guys", they were described as that, but it was a completely inaccurate description. Larry Correia is Hispanic, not white. Sarah A. Hoyt is also Hispanic, and clearly not male. The proposed nominees ran the gamut as far as race, gender, and political stripe. In doing research for the article, there were many, many instances of non-white, non-male supporters or participants with Sad Puppies (I can't speak for Vox Day and his crowd as his rhetoric was often so vitriolic that I tried to avoid them).
- As for the quote from Gallo, she posted it publicly, and quite a lot was made of it in various press reports I read, and Tom DOherty himself responded very publicly about it, so I don't think it is given more weight than it's due. It was one of the more egregious cases of name calling during the entire process this year. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:29, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

- The recent comments about Vox Day on the talk page by Pinkbeast are blatant BLP violations and should be removed. Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list
Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you! Files that exist on the Commons
If a file exists on both the English Wikipedia and the Commons, the Commons version is "hidden". If the files get out of sync, the now-different version on the Commons cannot be used on the English Wikipedia.
While this is by design and while some people would consider it desirable, I see much more potential harm than potential good.
I'm writing because you argue that the presence of the "keep local" template is pretty much automatic grounds to reject any FfD deletion request if the only basis is "an identical version exists on the Commons," but you do not offer a way around the problem of the possibly-different or possibly-will-become-different-in-the-future Commons version being unusable on the English Wikipedia.
I would ask you to either join me in recommending that such images generally be "kept and renamed" (along with adding a "do not copy back to Commons under the same name" message to the English file-description page) or come up with some other way for the Commons image to be used on the English Wikipedia if neither image is renamed.
In short:
- Not honoring the uploader's request should be avoided except when it is harmful,
- Having one image "cover" the other is harmful or could become harmful in the future if either image changes
- I would welcome your input or support in finding a way to honor the uploader's intent while still being able to access the image on the Commons.
davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 20:16, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
- I'm fine if people want to change things, but as it is now, we shouldn't be deleting things here when it's been requested they be kept, unless we talk to the person who made the request and clear it with them first. There may be a perfectly legit reason for keeping it, of which we may not be aware. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:58, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Teenage admins
You know my position on the recent RfA so feel free to discredit this if you like, but I feel promoted or not a discussion needs to happen on what to do with teenage admin applicants. Would this or wouldn't it be an automatic disqualifier? I do know some websites have an over 18 policy when it comes to admin-ship. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 23:04, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- People seem divided on it. The way I see it, if the person shows they have what it takes (level-headedness, consistency, fairness, etc.), I don't much care what their age is. It is less likely a teenager would be able to show they have what it takes, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:54, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

While the RfC regarding the production companies has started, can you please take a look at the Lord Marksman and Vanadis article? I intend to expand it to at least a B-Class or GA, but I may need some help with translating the afterwords of the light novel volumes (they provide valuable information on the production) and the interview with Tatsuo Sato on the anime's official website. Thanks, Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 01:02, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
- I don't know if I have the time for large translation projects right now. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 01:04, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for supporting Admin resinstatement
Joe, Thanks for supporting my reinstatement request. — ERcheck (talk) 00:28, 23 December 2015 (UTC)
- It was just a policy-based decision. Other than looking into why they were removed, I don't know that I know much about you. Have fun mopping. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 01:47, 23 December 2015 (UTC)
OTRS stuff, etc.
Can we streamline the process somewhat? I ended up being hospitalized in October and I couldn't reply to OTRS on time, and going through all the images I've uploaded is a pain. Yanping Nora Soong (talk) 00:22, 24 December 2015 (UTC)
- Send me an email (using the link on the left in the Tools section) with the email address you used to submit them to OTRS. That way I can look them up for you. That would be the fastest way. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 07:09, 24 December 2015 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free image File:Osomatsu-kun DVD volume 18 cover.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Osomatsu-kun DVD volume 18 cover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:36, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks
Thanks for closing that RfC. :) Biblioworm 00:50, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
- No problem. It needed to be done. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 00:56, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
IP 101 etc
I thought I should drop you a line here instead of being bold seeing as this IP is being promoted as being me per an SPI (a check user has been requested and I expect it to show negative) - and changing that shared IP ID you put on that vandal's page. There is no such company as "Australian Toowoomba Telstra", and all of the links I could access through that IP all said Telstra and nothing else (Whois, rDNS etc). So could you change it to just Telstra Pty Ltd? The IP's assertion about Toowoomba is actually irrelevant, not inaccurate as he claimed (if there is such a thing as a difference between the two). - I have no idea what you are talking about. Please be more specific, provide some links, etc. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 03:59, 30 December 2015 (UTC)

- You're just really stubborn, aren't you. It's still going to remain in one place despite your efforts. I've closed the BN discussion. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 03:59, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Hiroshi Kanazawa
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Hiroshi Kanazawa requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. - How did you even run into this article? You never seem to edit anything related to Japan, so this would be really obscure to you. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:53, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
RE: Two Editors Disrupting Edits Complaint
Dear Nihonjoe,
I am confused. The page you recommended I go to, dispute resolution says to go to Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents? Lokshin kugel (talk) 18:43, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
- They are not bullying you, nor are they doing the other things you mentioned. You are disputing over what should go in the article. Therefore, you should be following the normal dispute resolution steps given on that page:
- Follow the normal protocol
- Discuss with the other party
- Focus on content
- Disengage
- If those don't work, then follow the steps in the next section:
- Moderated discussion
- Third Opinion
- Request community input on article content
- Noticeboards
- Subject-specific help
- Editor assistance
- Formal mediation
- You haven't yet gone through all of those steps, any of which might help resolve the issues. You need to keep an open mind and understand that you may very well be wrong. Even we administrators (despite legendary belief to the contrary) are not always correct. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:13, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

Improper close
The discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#Continuous uncivil behavior and comments by Akbar the Great was improperly closed by you. I was reporting his uncivil comments and ANI is the proper place to report. He should have asked to apologize and strike his comments or banned for his behavior before closure. I request that you revert your edits and keep the discussion open until the matter is resolved. Sheriff | ☎ 911 | 19:26, 31 December 2015 (UTC)
- You can very well continue the
pissing matchdiscussion on your own talk pages. Both of you need to stop being offended by each other, grow up, and learn to work together. You can't go running tomommy and daddythe administrators every time you have a disagreement. There's nothing block-worthy in either of your actions, yet. Maybe take a few days off and come back with a cooler head. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 19:29, 31 December 2015 (UTC)- Thank you for your help, we will continue the fighting then. - Just try to be more civil. If things get out of hand, one or both of you may be blocked. As long as you do your part and remain civil no matter what, then you won't have any problems on your end. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 05:08, 3 January 2016 (UTC)
- If this type of language continues, i don't think Wikipedia would be a conducive environment to work in. Since, you closed my previous request, i have been trying to refrain from opening another one since then but this editor's accusations and harsh language continues despite my attempts to resolve the matter. Sheriff | ☎ 911 | 00:48, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
- @SheriffIsInTown: You're welcome to open a new discussion if you wish, but you should try to work things out. Looking through some of the edits both of you have made, it seems you are both working to improve articles, but you sometimes hit heads determining how those improvements should be made. It looks like Akbar is getting just as frustrated with your actions as you are with his. His "language" has been pretty tame, albeit somewhat rude in the example you gave above, so perhaps work on thickening your skin a bit and just work as best as you can with him. You might even try a third opinion or mediation if you can't seem to work out your differences yourselves. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 01:16, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
