Animage, February 2005
Hello, Nihonjoe. There a small mystery that I am trying to clear up with this issue of Animage, and luckily I saw that you have a copy. This translated interview includes the terms "smacking" and "dabbing", which the translator explains as "placing an object in front of the subject for composition." I couldn't find anything on these terms in English though, so am I curious as to what words that Shinbo used in Japanese.
[1] There is a scan of this page, but what I am looking for is on the previous page, which was not scanned (this page begins with the line translated as "Oguro: In terms of story content, how was it? It’s an original story, isn’t it.") Could you please provide a copy of the response with the smacking/dabbing line? Thanks in advance. — Goszei (talk) 00:33, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

Larry Correia Biography section
Good evening,
I saw you helped clean up the Larry Correia Wiki article.
Thanks for the help =)
I noticed you deleted the Bibliography from the page. I'm somewhat unclear why you did that. You site that its redundant but work section only sites a handful of authors short shorts. Also a tables are more readable and lay out information more effectively
Looking at other authors with its common section see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_R._R._Martin#Bibliography IF that needs to spun out into its own page that is another issue.
Let me know your thoughts
Frdino (talk) 00:17, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Frdino: Your claim that the "work section only sites a handful of authors short shorts" is incorrect. It lists all of his novels, shorts, and editor credits, not just "a handful of authors short shorts". With how much he's put out, a table would not be easier to read, but rather a cumbersome beast to read. I agree regarding the bibliography being split out, though, so I've done that: Larry Correia bibliography. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 13:46, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- I think the main page for Larry still needs something like a one paragraph description of each series to provide context. Where the Bibliography is more there as a list of all his stuff. At this point I think we just disagree on if that should be a table or leave it as is but I concede the point to the more senior editor. Frdino (talk) 02:38, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Frdino: I've added a bit about each of the three main series. Feel free to add information about other series, too. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:41, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

Doctors Academy Group
Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this. I believe the page 'Doctors Academy Group of Educational Establishments' was removed. I understand this is because it had been created multiple times in the past. I did not personally create these pages, and am still learning the ropes of Wikipedia and was in the process of perfecting the page so it complied with the guidelines based on the reviews given. I quickly undid the UPE which seemed to be the biggest problem and was in the process of fixing any copyright issue. We believe the page is notable as it is an educational establishment and I was wondering if there was any way to get it back and continue improving it to stay in line with guidelines, or to set up a new one from scratch. If this is possible, and if you have any further advice for me, that would be great. Thank you. Afbell (talk) 11:00, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

BYU Family History Library
Hi Nihonjoe, my student has been editing BYU Family History Library. Since we work for the library, it qualifies as COI and I would like another editor to look at it. First--does it pass notability criteria? My student, Cstickle found a few independent news articles that I think establish notability, but we could also merge the page with Harold B. The article Alcatraz Versus the Shattered Lens has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Doesn't meet WP:NBOOK.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Isabelle 🔔 01:58, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Nihonjoe. Would you mind taking a look at this edit? You're the administrator who indefinitely blocked the editor who made the edit and also you're probably quite familair with all of the discussions that have taken place over the years related to this kind of disambigualtion when it comes to Japanese cities who share their name with a prefecture. Is PhD a thing in Japan?
Hi, Joe. I guess I always assumed you were Japanese, but I see from your userpage that you're not. I hope I may still ask you a language question? I blocked an apparently Japanese user indefinitely a couple of weeks ago for sealioning, egregious ABF, etc, etc.[2] They have posted several unblock requests, all declined, where they say it's all a misunderstanding due to language difficulties. (Their English seems fine to me, but I suppose that doesn't preclude having trouble understanding certain words.) Specifically, they didn't know what PhD / Doctor of Philosopy meant, and that's the reason they carried on the way they did here. (They actually express this most clearly in the section above my block notice,[3] in response to warnings by Acroterion.) Could you please tell me whether that claim to ignorance is credible? I note that the Japanese wikipedia has an article on Doctor of Philosophy, which includes the abbreviation PhD. Is PhD a thing in Japanese? It looks a substantial article, so I find it hard to believe it's merely about a foreign concept. Regards, Bishonen | tålk 04:30, 30 September 2021 (UTC).
- @Bishonen: Yes, Ph.D. is a thing in Japan. They even call it a "Ph.D." More commonly, though, they have a degree called "Academic Doctor" (see here). It's possible, though I think unlikely, that someone would be unfamiliar with the term with as good a command of English as this editor has. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:11, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

Could use your suggestions
Hey, Joe, we're nearing the one year anniversary of you helping me with reference translations. This is a very important anniversary to various cultures, and you better celebrate it. I did a good article review for a video that was released exclusively to Japan, so there's a hefty amount of Japanese sources. They didn't have English translations, so I left that as one of the comments, but I'm now noticing this is a lot of work for someone who doesn't speak the language. I don't want you to simply translate all of the sources yourself, because that's a lot of work too, so I'm curious; how can an English speaker best translate these references themself? As in, what source or translator would work best for this? I don't think Google Translate is the best quality, because it usually isn't accurate, so what other options are there? Panini!🥪 14:25, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Panini!: I don't know that someone who only speaks/reads English would have an easy time using Japanese sources. Google Translate is good enough to usually get a basic idea of what a source is saying, but unless you have experience with the language and can catch subtleties that Google Translate doesn't, you won't always understand what something is really saying. Your best bet is to work with someone who understands Japanese and has the time to help you out. You may find some help at ja:Wikipedia:Help for Non-Japanese Speakers, though it's really hit-or-miss whether you get someone to answer there. Hope that helps! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:49, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
- Nihonjoe, thanks for letting me know! Usually, this is the part where someone will say, "That's cool, since you speak it can you help me?", but I'll get out of your hair. Panini!🥪 15:14, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
Inexistent Rumors
Well, here I come. The reason why I modified some information in the article about the Akihabara massacre is because you were adding inexistent rumors. Yes. There were no rumors which link the execution of Tsutomu Miyazaki with the Akihabara massacre. Everything was nothing more but a Mandela Effect. And honestly, you were putting information about rumors which never existed.
I hope you could understand me. Thank you very much.
Matsumaru94 (talk) 22:11, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Matsumaru94: I'm sorry, but you're edit warring now. Do it again and you may be blocked from editing. As for the "inexistent rumors", the articles used as references for the parts you removed specifically link the two. Your edit has been reverted as vandalism. Please don't remove the information again. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:39, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Nihonjoe: Ok. Seriously sorry. My intention wasn't causing an Edit Warring. It's just that, until where I know, there were never rumors which linked such executions to that tragedy, until I read such rumors; well, maybe a journalist told them, but this doesn't assures they could be true or not, because sometimes, journalists could be wrong. But whatever the case, it was just a mere coincidence. Seriously sorry for causing unwillingly problems. It wasn't my intention. Greetings.--Matsumaru94 (talk) 21:33, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Matsumaru94: That's why it's important to read sources before you assume they don't mention something. Whether there is actually a connection, we may never know, but it was reported that there appeared to be one in multiple reliable sources. That's why that's remaining in the article. If you have any questions in the future about this or anything else, please let me know. How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Courtesy notice that per WP:PREEMPTIVE I removed full protection for this article. I see a lot of recent deaths articles via WP:ITN, and I can't think of any that have full protection, nor does anything in the page history of the article suggest that such protection is warranted. Sure, there may be a flurry of edits, but they in my experience at ITN, they generally aren't vandalism, and full protection seems a tad overboard. - Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
- Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period
Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Translation help
Hello, we met previously in the GA review for Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash. I come to you with a request for translating this title from a Japanese article: マリオ生誕20周年記念で『ファミコンミニスーパーマリオブラザーズ』の再販決定!. I know I could just use Google Translate however I want to make sure this title is as accurate as possible (I know how inaccurate Google Translate can be). Also, I was wondering whether this website counts as a Reliable Source for me to cite. [4] If you don't know the answer then I will posit my answer onto the RS Noticeboard. Thank you for reading and hope you have a good day. CaptainGalaxy 23:14, 18 April 2022 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Brandon Sanderson
The article Brandon Sanderson you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Brandon Sanderson for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Updates to bureaucrat minimum activity requirements
Hello Nihonjoe.
Following a discussion at the Bureaucrats' noticeboard, the minimum activity requirements for bureaucrats have been updated to also include the the recently updated minimum editing requirements for administrators (i.e. at least 100 edits every 5 years). This will be enforced beginning in January 2023. Should you no longer wish to volunteer as a bureaucrat you may request removal at SRP and.or let us know at WP:BN.

possibility of moving a photo from Commons to enwiki?
Hi, I made a mistake on the copyrights of the images on Minerva Teichert. Since they were originally unpublished, their copyright doesn't expire until 150 years after the date of their creation (which isn't for another 2-4 years). I nominated the two photos from the body of the page for deletion on Commons. I think that the infobox image can be used under fair use. Should I nominate it for deletion on Commons and re-upload to enwiki, or is there a way to move it from Commons to enwiki? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:25, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Rachel Helps (BYU): There may be a tool to move from Commons to enwiki (I think there's a template for doing that). The fastest way, though, is to upload it here. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:58, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

I'm a bit confused about your edit summary [7]. Would you mind expanding on what you were saying? Dawnseeker2000 21:16, 5 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Dawnseeker2000: You changed the date in a template from "November 2012" to "May 2022" and used the edit summary of "date formats per MOS:DATEFORMAT by script". Your edit made no sense as the date format was just fine and the template being used was
{{Use dmy dates}}
. There's no reason to change the date in that template as it should reflect when it was placed on the article. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 22:07, 5 May 2022 (UTC)- Please review template:use dmy dates for proper usage of the template and date format maintenance in general. - @Dawnseeker2000: I know how to use dates in templates. All you did was change the date itself. You didn't change the format of the date, so your edit summary makes no sense at all. Changing the date from "November 2012" to "May 2022" has absolutely nothing to do with the date format. If I see you simply changing the date itself (not the format) and using the same basic edit summary, I'll revert you again as that's disruptive. Please stop being disruptive with false edit summaries. Using automated tools in a disruptive fashion is not acceptable. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:39, 5 May 2022 (UTC)

Question about user perms on jaWiki
Hello! Not sure if you can answer this (I've asked on the relevant Wiki's help page for those who don't speak the language but haven't received an answer yet), but is there a place where I can request autoconfirmed and extended confirmed perms on jaWiki? I had attempted to revert an LTA using global Twinkle, only to be stopped by an edit filter. So I went to jaWiki's place to request perms but there wasn't a place to request autoconfirmed and extended confirmed there. I wouldn't be able to get those perms by normal means since I don't know Japanese at all. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 17:06, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Blaze Wolf: I think that's the only way to get them, though autoconfirmed should be automatically assigned after so many edits (not sure of the number). ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:08, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hmm.. that's going to be a bit problematic for when I do have to make edits there (which won't be often). I know autoconfirmed will automatically get assigned after a certain number of edits, however there's still the issue of me not knowing any Japanese (or even how to type/write Japanese characters (kanji? I know there are different terms for them)) which would mean I would have to basically try and "game" autoconfirmed. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 17:13, 16 May 2022 (UTC)

CHUS
Hi,
At WP:CHUS I usually give users a minimum of a week to respond to comments/questions. I've seen other renamers give two weeks. I'm hesitant to give users a realname and give them a need to come back for another renaming when they realise the consequences, a request which may get bounced as being frivolous or repeated.
I make no claims of WP:OWNership to any request. I just asked a question, which in this case I see as a courtesy to the user. If you want to jump in and act on the request, more power to you. It'll make the queue shorter which is never a bad thing. Cabayi (talk) 06:43, 25 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Cabayi: I would normally agree. In this case, since they were already using their real name in their username, and the request was simply to remove the part that wasn't their real name, I don't see a reason to wait. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:34, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
- I can see your logic that it's discourteous to make someone wait.
- My viewpoint is that the fact the user made a poor choice in the past should not deprive them of the chance to reconsider their request and to make a good choice now.
- If the request is approved, the general interpretation of m:GRP#Policy's "frivolous, repeated" provision is that a user should wait 6 months before making a new request. If the request is declined they are free to re-request immediately with a new name, or an affirmation that they know what they're doing with regard to WP:REALNAME. To me, rejecting the request is the kinder option.
- A side issue, the deleted history of this user's userpage suggests they are confusing usernames with article names. Cabayi (talk) 06:11, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
