Media Matters

Hi Peaceray and thanks for your vigilance in spotting some unusual editing behavior. After looking at a few of the edits in question I have the feeling that it is a good faith effort to improve the article citations as he is not changing any text. I think what he/she is trying to do is remove links to news articles that are being hosted on Media Matters but originated from other news sources. On WP we try to avoid citing web "reprints" of articles because of potential copyright or accuracy problems. But I'm not sure as in some instances he has improved the cite but in others he has degraded the citation (though I don't think that was his/her motivation or intention). So I've put a note on Thagor's talk page and ask him/her to please clarify what they are doing and then I can give suggestions, coaching, feedback etc on that basis. -- — Keithbob • Talk • 22:04, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

I was trying to do a sanity check. All this started with changes to the Overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom of the Liliuokalani article after the removal of the Media Matters citation, which directly supported the text. the Media Matters article itself was well cited with seven citations. Thanks for coming to the Teahouse to check in about potential POV pushing dealing with citations. It's great to keep a close eye on neutrality, but it's equally important not to jump to conclusions when dealing with others who might not share your views. By coming to the Teahouse you hopefully avoided a nasty battle and instead can just continue improving the encyclopedia. Thanks for doing that!

Sorry, but I am not sure to what you are referring. I previewed the Template:Notice, then viewed it afterwards. It looked OK. After reading your message, I viewed it on Windows in IE9, Firefox 19, & Chrome, & on Mac with Firefox 19 & Safari. It rendered appropriately in all those iterations. What exactly did you see? Province of Nicarao's Water and Rich Coast

Hi Peaceray. I believe your instance that "y" is not an English word is a hyper correction. I realize that this is the English-langauge Wikipedia, but some proper names are not translated. For example "Honduras" means "the depths" (something which the early Spanish sailors noted), but no one calls the country that. The two provinces created by the Cortes (note, it's not "the Courts"—check the relevant published, academic literature) were 1. "Guatemala" and 2. "Nicaragua y Costa Rica." This was clear in the original wording. "Y" was not "and" in that case but rather the part of the proper name of the province, and hence it was untranslated. Conjunctions and prepositions in proper names of cities and provinces are usually not translated. (Note the full name of Coahuila.) Best, TriniMuñoz (talk) 20:39, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

As per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Text formatting, "Wikipedia prefers italics for phrases in other languages and for isolated foreign words that do not yet have everyday use in non-specialized English." It would have been clear to me that Nicaragua y Costa Rica was a Spanish name & not a failure to properly translate if it had been italicized. To avoid further confusion, I have italicized it as well as the corresponding province name of Guatemala (to keep both province names matching in font style).

Thanks for your dialogue & education of me on this matter. Here's to a better Wikipedia!

Hi, I'm aware of that rule, but that rule applies to words and phrases, not proper names. (Otherwise Wikipedia—or any MLA or Chicago style article—would look very different than they do now.) Ofer Dekel happens to be well cited

I am not sure if you are looking in the right place. Please look at the following.

• http://academic.research.microsoft.com/Author/3314685/ofer-dekel lists him as "Cited by 831 authors".

According to Google Scholar, the researcher Ofer Dekel has co-authored about 60 papers. On many of them, he was the lead author. The first three in the list had 621, 146, & 122 citations respectfully. As a researcher at Microsoft, Ofer Dekel may not be at an academic institution, which might account for his lower visibility on general Google searches, but he certainly does seem to be well known in the research community.
