Hi Polly, Thanks for your message/concern but this image IS now used - I uploaded it (yesterday) before I finished the article, ASTRA Platform Services (today). You were just too damn quick! Tomwhitman2 image

edit

Hi Polly,

Thank you for your message. I was having some difficulty understanding which tag to use for my upload. I have permission from the owner of the image (Tom Whitman) to use the image on Wikipedia. It is an image that is easily found on the internet, and is on Facebook as well. It is not copyrighted in any way...really just a snapshot that has been used in the past on digital promotional materials in the past. Please help me notate it in the correct way so that I can stay within the Wikipedia guidelines.

Thanks much, Stephen --Srtheiss (talk) 21:47, 29 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Polly,

Tom Whitman owns the rights to the photo. He agrees to the free use of the photo. I am getting formal email confirmation for consent to use the image under the following agreement:

I hereby assert that I am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of WORK [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tomwhitman2.jpg ].

I agree to publish that work under the free license .

I acknowledge that I grant anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws. I am aware that I always retain copyright of my work, and retain the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be attributed to me. I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the content may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

7/29/2009, Tom Whitman

Once I get that confirmation, do I post that with the image file?

Thanks,

Stephen

Polly,

I submitted the email to OTRS on Friday, and they they removed the warning about the licensing, but the pending notice is still there and I have not received an email reply. Should I expect to receive a reply email?

Thank you,

Stephen —Preceding unsigned comment added by Srtheiss (talkcontribs) 02:30, 4 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Cerceris images

edit

Hi Polly,

I have an e-mail conformation from the owner of the website (http://www.cerceris.info/) to use all the images I have uploaded. I have followed your instructions and e-mailed the permission I received in e-mail in to the address you provided. I was given permission to use any images on the site as public domain. Is this sufficient or is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks,

Andrew. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrew Morse (talkcontribs) 23:08, 21 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

On the captioned, the photo is of a local cheiftain in India circa 1739-1740 and is most probably a court potratit. The photograph by default is the property of the Government of India, Department of Archaeology and is freely available for Public Use through the Victoria Memorial Hall, Museum, Calcutta [West Bengal] India.

You may upload the photo without risk.

Alan Coren -- trying to load a picture

edit

Hi, I took some pics of Alan Coren back in April 1969 while visiting the offices of Punch Magazine. I wanted to upload one of them to his Wikipedia page, and I'm afraid that I couldn't get it right. I followed the instructions, but couldn't figure out how to link the location on his page with the location on wikipedia for the picture (Alan_Coren.jpg). I own the copyright to the picture, should I put up a copyright notice with it? If so, how? Thanks. Condolences also. I note that Bk2006 (talk · contribs), who I've just blocked for a week for a really nasty edit summary, seems to be one of our problem users who ignores our guidelines on images. I sometimes give them notice that if they are not going to enter into dialogue and show that they understand and will try to comply with our guidelines, they may be blocked indefinitely (which can easily be lifted if they want it lifted). Any comments on this particular user? Dougweller (talk) 19:06, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • I've gone through their uploads and made a few adjustments and listed a lot a PUI. This user seems to have no grasp of copyright law, they seem to think anything they find on Google images is fair game. Polly (Parrot) 22:09, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
I caught him evading his block and making more insulting edit summaries (he's very anti-Indian to say the least), so I've given him an indefinite block. He was heading for one anyway.

You disputed the {{Non-free use rationale}} for File:Zefnoon Safai, Legham Province, Afghanistan.jpg.

Were you aware that Afghanistan is not a signatory to any international copyright agreements, and has no domestic copyright protection laws?

Some wire services and freelance photographers treat images taken as if all the rights to them belong to whoever first publishes them in a country that does have copyright protection. IANAL, but I suspect this is nonsense.

Others have argued that images taken there remain in the public domain, no matter how and where they are published.

I've dropped some hints that the wikimedia foundation's lawyers should weigh in on the copyright issue of images taken in a country with no copyright protection. Until the lawyers weigh in I am going to upload images like this as "fair use", even though I suspect they are really PD. Geo Swan (talk) 03:13, 15 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rock5410's images

edit

After you went through the images in Kuvempu University and tagged them per CSD, I see that Rock5410 went through and duplicated the images but with different names, this time claiming he's the creator and releases the images into the public domain. <sigh> I've been mostly focused on his copying of non-free text so far, but I'm wondering what I can do to help with his persistent image copyright issues. I haven't really delved into the media use on Wikipedia before, so I'm not sure what the processes are. How do you handle something where it's obviously taken from that gallery website and it's likely a false claim of ownership? I'm going to go try to explain it to him on his talk page. I have gotten a response via a non-template message there previously (or at least a change in behavior), so maybe I can get his attention that way. He just seems to delete the template warnings without reading them. Thanks for working on this! WeisheitSuchen (talk) 11:56, 15 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • If he keeps uploading copyrighted images under false free licenses then a block will be needed until he shows some understanding of copyright. I'll send all the images to PUI, but if he reuploads them then you might want to drop a quick note at AN/I to see if a block is appropriate. Polly (Parrot) 16:07, 15 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, that sounds like a plan. Thanks! WeisheitSuchen (talk) 17:41, 15 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Just gave him an indefinite block with an explanation on his talk page, his latest talk age deletions were the last straw. Dougweller (talk) 18:11, 15 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Probably for the best, at least until they learn something about copyright. Polly (Parrot) 18:22, 15 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Photographs

edit

I have uploaded two files – File:Making of Baluchari Sari.jpg and File:Cluster of Temples.jpg. Both the files are from Wikitravel. They were uploaded in Wikitravel by another person and I have copied his comments. The original pictures are, therefore, neither mine nor uploaded by me. I donot have the required permission from the original owners of the photograph. The person who initially uploaded the photographs does not seem to be active any more. However, in India, the public relations departments (PR deptts) of various companies, as well as government bodies distribute hundreds of pictures to the media for free publication. This is a standard practice in this country. Therefore, I do not feel that any copy right problems are involved in the publication of any such photograph. However, if you think otherwise fell free to delete both the photographs. I would only loose some valuable supporting visuals. Sorry, for the trouble. Cheers. - Chandan Guha (talk) 03:59, 16 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • Unfortunately without a clear permission from the copyright holder these images can't remain under a free license. It can't be assumed that the copyright holder would find this licensing acceptable. Polly (Parrot) 00:47, 17 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
A fair use rationale wouldn't really work as the images would be pretty easy to replace with free versions. So only a free license really works, if you can't show that the image has been freely licensed by the copyright holder then it will likely be deleted. Have you tried looking on Flickr for some freely licensed similar images? Polly (Parrot) 13:31, 17 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

File copyright problem with File:Cage rotor.jpg File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Cage rotor.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

AfD nomination of Johnny Prill

edit
An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Johnny Prill. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Johnny Prill. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:24, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi

edit

Hey there Polly ;), I was just poking around and helping out at WP:CSD by clearing the backlog of images that needed to be deleted, and I noticed your extensive work with pseudo speedy deletion in images. And I just thought I'd stop by and say that I appreciate all of the work you are putting into helping keep Wikipedia free of unnecessary non-free images and making sure that all non-free images meet policy :). I also wanted to say thank you for your welcome to wikipedia message that you gave me when I first joined wikipedia back in Feb of '08 :). The links in the welcome message were very useful to me when I was first starting out on Wikipedia, and heck now that I'm an admin I look back and see that those links really helped me to get started on wikipedia and to become the user I am today. So thanks for all of your dedication and kindness past, present, and hopefully in the future for a long time to come :). Best, Mifter (talk) 03:37, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Mifter for the lovely and thoughtful message, I can't believe how quickly all that time has gone. It was great to hear that the welcome message was helpful and that you've gone on to become an admin. That welcome template with the links can be very useful, I still keep mine at the top of my talk page as it often comes in handy.
Image upload patrolling is pretty relentless and time consuming. Wikipedia's image use policies and guidelines can be very hard for established users to comprehend let alone newbies, so it's always nice when someone appreciates your efforts. Keep on doing what you do Mifter and may Wikipedia long continue to benefit from your presence. Polly (Parrot) 18:10, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

removal of my page

edit

I have noticed that my page has already been deleted and before I had a chance to respond. That is not fair. I thought I had seven days, obviously something is wrong.

I have read all the comments. Here is my response

1. I admit I am a newbie and perhaps I didn’t follow proper procedures. I find the instructions on Wikipedia written for computer nerds, but not for the average person like me. So I am doing my best to understand and anyone who has valid concerns, I am willing to read and respond accordingly.

2. That said. Let me make some preliminary remarks first. I do not know any of the people who are making these concerns. I don’t know if you are gay or straight. Whether you are a leader in gay rights movement or whether you were a large contributor to the Prop 8 campaign. I don’t know whether you are saying “nay” because you honestly do not feel my achievements are not worthy or whether you have a bias against gays and don’t want Wikipedia to show anything which would put gays in positive light.

One of the people who responded was a minister (I don’t see his comments now for some reason). Now I know that there are many denominations which are supportive of the gay community such as Quakers, Unitarians, United Church of Christ, Metropolitan Community Churches and Reform Jews. But there are many denominations which have caused a lot of pain to the gay community such as Mormons, Southern Baptists, and Assembly of God. So I don’t know where you are coming from.

I do not mind making some editing changes, but I do not want to be removed because of homophobes who has a bias against gays.

So let’s take a look at some of the concerns.

1. Polly said that I said I was the first gay school board member and she didn’t think that was correct. She is right. It isn’t correct, because that is not what I said. I am the first gay person in the country to win a seat on an elementary school board. I was also the very first gay person to be elected to a school board below college level in California.

Someone said where is the verification. I am not sure what verification you need, however you can verify what I said from a book called Out for Office which was published by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund.

If there other things that you need to be verified let me know and I will provide that.

Someone said that being the first gay school board member, why is that so significant? Please refer to the Wikipedia page for Harvey Milk. He served in office less than a year before he was killed by a homophobe. He was elected to the city council of that city. As the Wikipedia page says he was elected as the first gay man in California. I have served on a school board for over 20 years. Are you saying that a gay person who served less than a year is more important than a gay person who has served for over 20?

So how can I appeal the decision to have me removed? Please respond to [email protected] —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gmillerkc (talkcontribs) 01:30, 30 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Alan Bates.jpg

edit

A tag has been placed on File:Alan Bates.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the file can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{Non-free fair use}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the file. If the file has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Replaceable fair use File:John Mills.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:John Mills.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Philroc (c) 12:31, 10 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
