Thank you so much !

Thank you so much Tito, for having given me your Argumentative Wikipedian barnstar, I very much appreciate this recognition. By the way, your name is familiar to me, as Dutta is the name of a friend of mine and colleague in the same group , we sometimes played chess in the evening, but he won more often than I...

Tito, thank you for your hint to look at Amartya Sen, his arrow’s paradox etc. As to Aryabhata's way of finding the value of Pi that is much more accurate than 22/7, for me it seems the approach might have been by iteration, as e.g. you easily can get any square root by iteration, in just few steps.
And, maybe in lack of the math. decimal point, he had to find a large number that is accurate enough to give an approximation that, by dividing it by the multiple (the thousandfold or the thousandfold) of a simple digit (the "2" in his case) will give some value that was correct "enough". And I suppose he might have started with some rough value, in his case it eventually could have been at first (3?)*(100+4) (=312), and he just might have tried then to get some suitable approach by varying this value with a special factor.
At first (?) by changing my "3" to some other digit ... finally it was the "8" etc. etc.
I will be trying to see if there is some possible way for me to retrace his approach. Thank you and kind regards, Gerhardvalentin (talk) 17:49, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Article on Gurudas Banerjee

I created an article for Gurudas Banerjee, who seems to have played Ramakrishna more often than anyone else. It still has loose ends that need tying up, but perhaps it's not too early to submit to Did You Know. It would not pass DYK until it's cleaned up, but that doesn't necessarily mean it shouldn't be nominated (and it could still be worked on while waiting for review). What do you think? If you think it's not too early, feel free to go ahead and nominate (perhaps a fact for a hook would be what's below the photo, which could conceivably itself be included...). Thanks, and congrats on all your good work at The Light:.... -- Presearch (talk) 10:18, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

The YouTube video link is here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8A2769AA06AB62FE and I'm wondering if that's the same as the 1982 film listed in the Gurudas Banerjee film table: Shri Shri Ramakrishna Kathamrita. They do show a lot of credits (in Bengali) in the first minute or two. Perhaps with luck that will help us figure out the identity of this video - whether it's the 1982 film, or something else in our table, or something else entirely new that we should add. The database links for the 1982 film are: CITWF Gomolo IMDB Thanks! -- Presearch (talk) 11:23, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Wow, what you say about the director/etc is baffling to me. (On my talkpage you said: director: Radha Saha, editor: Narayan Biswas, photography: Sunanda Chatterjee). It is baffling to me because the YouTube film linked above actually looks in so many ways like a good match for the Kathamrita film (databases linked above). When I watch a few minutes of the YouTube video it shows someone with a beard like "M" arriving at Dakshineswar with his friend, then visiting SRK, then writing something, etc. Basically the story of M's meeting with SRK as told in the Kathamrita. So visually this looks to me like a portrait of M. And the quality of the film looks to me like it might have been made around 1982. So it looks like a very good match for the 1982 Kathamrita film. But then the information above about the director does not match at all with the database info for Kathamrita (which is director: Bikash Goswami; photography: Tapen Ghosh; editor: ?). And the 3 names you give above seem not to be listed in the databases at all - and hardly on the internet, except that Radha Saha seems to have directed a film Mahalaya.
So I am baffled. Is there any chance that there's some confusion and these still are actually the same - i.e., that the databases have confused the director with the producer? Does the film mention Bikash Goswami and Tapen Ghosh anywhere? If not, it seems to me that we have one more film that we should put in the grid - but we don't even know its year, and we'd need to rely again on Bengali speakers to try to extract that info from the YouTube video (which we would need to unlink before the FaRK article went into mainspace). What do you think? -- Presearch (talk) 23:18, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Other stuff

1. I presume you saw my response a day or two ago with a draft email HERE for contacting Prabuddha Bharata, etc.? (no rush - just checking you didn't miss it)

2. I've now created a page to collect info about plays about Ramakrishna: User:Presearch/PaRK. I regard it as lower-priority than the films page. But if we encounter info, let's collect it there. If you have a list of such plays, by all means enter that info when you have time.... Thanks -- Presearch (talk) 02:47, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Ready for DYK?

Dear Tito, please take another look at Gurudas Banerjee, and tell me if you think it is ready to be nominated for DYK. You can see that I have added material on the talk page that invites Bengali speakers to help clarify some of the ambiguities. But the article itself is much cleaner. No links in tables. There are a few places where the footnotes say "see talk page" -I wonder if this is OK for a DYK article, to acknowledge uncertainty like this? If not, I wonder what the best next step is. Also, There are 4 YouTube video links now in footnotes. I will remove them if you think it necessary (most of them are on talk page). But they are from the years 1950, 1958, 1964, 1979, and all but the last one are in black and white. Do you think a copyright from a movie from Bengal in 1950 would still be in force after more than 60 years? Does Wikipedia give us any guidelines about when movie copyrights can be regarded as having expired? Note: I am trying to get this page in shape soon for a DYK nomination since the deadline is getting closer. Thanks much! -- Presearch (talk) 09:35, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Response

Well... what about:
... that Bengali actor Gurudas Banerjee was a "specialist" at portraying Sri Ramakrishna (pictured), a role he "almost monopolized" on both stage and screen?

The Nutcracker

The anonymous edit you "good-faith" reverted is factually correct. Whether belongs where it was inserted is another matter and I am semi-retired from Wikipedia, as you may see on my talki page and perhaps in the same spirit that you are trying to go on Wikibreak, so am not going to do more than this. You may reply here, there or not at all as you see fit, and thank you for caring about Wik' enough to have an "inform me" button on you signature! — Robert Greer (talk) 17:23, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

You are talking about this edit. The reasons to tag that edit as "good faith revert": 1) writing proper noun in all small (i.e. megan kilpatrick), also no punctuation mark at the end (of sentence/paragraph), 2) usourced addition (previously it was sourced that 1940 ballet was preformed by Alexandra Fedorova, and the edit changed that to megan kilpatrick)! I can not understand this portion for caring about Wik' enough. Yes, I encourage others to ask question if they are not satisfied with my revert! --Tito Dutta (talk) 17:36, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
I was writing in haste and did not notice the LC "megan kilpatrick". Here's a link that supports the 1940 Ballet Russe prodction: http://oasis.lib.harvard.edu//oasis/deliver/deepLink?_collection=oasis&uniqueId=hou00231Robert Greer (talk) 18:14, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Qs re QPQ + BDay date

Hi Tito, thanks for doing the QPQ, and also thanks for the heads-up about SRK=Shahrukh Khan! Two Qs:

1. With regard to the QPQ, how would you recommend I record it as "for" me rather than you? Should I just link a DIFF for the message you left on my talk page?

2. With regard to Sri Ramakrishna's birthday as being Feb 18 versus Mar 13, which of these two dates do you think will be more widely observed in India? It seems that the Ramakrishna Mission (here and here) is celebrating it according to a Hindu lunar calendar on March 13 in 2013. But of course, according to the western Gregorian Calendar it is Feb 18, 2013, as noted here. Which do you think is likely to be more widely recognized in India among people who read Wikipedia?

Many thanks again! -- Presearch (talk) 20:17, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Can we use youtube as a source?---zeeyanketu talk to me 07:49, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
Only special uploads like official videos, promotional videos etc! --Tito Dutta (talk) 09:02, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
To add to what Tito has said, it really depends on what you want to use YouTube as a source for. So if it is a video that clearly shows someone saying something and there is nothing to indicate that is fake then you could use the video as a citation for the quote. On the other hand, the video shows what the person said but not whether or not it was true. So a video of me saying "A is B" could be cited for "Yaris678 stated that A is B." but not "A is B."
As Tito alluded to, if it is an official video by a reputable authority on a subject you may be able to state what they say as fact. Sometimes this is hard to judge for videos though so I would generally go with the "X stated Y." approach.
I don't know if there is any kind of guidline on whether YouTube can show notability. I would suspect that if you found a non-trivial video, independent of the article subject, which discusses the the article subject in detail then it would be considered to show notability. Of course, the difficulty is in knowing what is a non-trivial video. I suspect that an official video by a reputable person or organisation would count but that probably isn't the best definition.

DYK material?

Bhaskarachandra has recently started an AfC on Ratha Kalpana (chariot metaphor used in both Katha Up. and the Gita). He has asked me, Vanischenu and others to help him with this. I think this article is DYK material. Few sentences in the background section appear like OR to me, but even without them the prose is close to 1500 characters. The article still needs to be reviewed (I can't do it because I've significant contributions in it) and then possibly submitted to DYK. Can you work with him on this? It might be encouraging for a new editor like him to see his article listed on the main page. Correct Knowledge«৳alk» 23:22, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Both Ratha Kaplana[1] and Ratha–Kalpana[2] are used in sources. I can't find any matches for Rathakalpana in Gbooks though. So, Ratha Kalpana looks like the safest choice here. Regarding the DYK, I did not know that Afcbot moves (and not copies) pages in and out of Afc, thereby retaining the article history. This subpage was created on 3rd Feb so we can submit it to DYK only till the 8th. I'll leave a message on the creator's talk page explaining what DYK is and asking him to come up with a suitable hook. Correct Knowledge«৳alk» 15:41, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

TAFI

Hello,
In the past few days, Today's Articles for Improvement has gone through many changes.

  • We have modified the process for adding Nominations, which now uses a template/table format and requires only 3 supports for an article to be selected.
  • There is now a Holding Area, where articles are kept for discussion before being selected for a particular date.
  • The TAFI schedule now involves adding 10 articles weekly, chosen from a variety of topics.
  • We now have an Accomplishments page where we will be highlighting our older TAFI articles which have now become quality articles on the Wikipedia.

The Project is almost ready to hit the Main Page, where it will be occupying a section just below "Did you Know" section. Three article from the weekly batch of 7 will be displayed randomly at the main page, the format of which can be seen at the Main Page sandbox. There is also an ongoing discussion at the Main page talk over the final details before we can go forward with the Main Page.

If you have any ideas to discuss with everyone else, please visit the TAFI Talk Page and join in on the ongoing discussions there. You are also invited to add new nominations, and comment and suport on the current ones at the Nominations page. You can also help by helping in the discussions at the Holding Area.

Above all, please do not forget to improve our current Today's Articles for Improvement

Thank you and hoping to have some productive work from you at the Project,

WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

  1.   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
  2.   Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
  3.   Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with   Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Other contributors of note include:

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by   The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Ever hear back from Ramakrishna/Vivekananda journals?

Hi Tito, please reacall (DIFF) that you were going to send out emails to editors of various Ramakrishna journals, such as Prabuddha Bharata, Udbodhan, and Vedanta Kesari, with regard to information about films on Ramakrishna. Did you ever hear anything back from them? Thanks -- Presearch (talk) 20:48, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

No, I haven't heard back anything still though I sent emails to one of them and another branch of RKM! --Tito Dutta (contact) 20:54, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Presisent?

Hi, your nomination Template:Did you know nominations/Shabnam Shakeel, and your article, include the word "Presisent's", which is how it's spelled in the source. While "Presisent" could be a name or something, it certainly seems to me that it's most likely a typo for "President". Do you have another source which either verifies the current spelling, or shows what I believe to be the "correct" spelling? MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 21:02, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Good catch! I have added another citation and WikiLink! --Tito Dutta (contact) 21:11, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick fix! MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 21:17, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
Pleasure! --Tito Dutta (contact) 21:18, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Humza Arshad

Hi, you have declined the creation of the article, Humza Arshad, based on one reference mentioning BBC and when you clicked on it you found another website, I am not sure which reference you are referring to. However as you have asked for links of 3 or 4 reliable web or news articles where the subject or his works have been discussed as the primary topic, here is all 14 of them; The Huffington Post, The Guardian, BBC News (July 2011), BBC News (August 2011), Mancunian Matters, South Wales Echo, Liverpool Echo, Asian Lite, The Asian Today, The Asian World, Desi Express, Ethnic Now, Desi Box, The Bradford Student. Also this article(s)[3][4][5] provides 5 paragraphs about the subject, (as WP:VRS requires one lengthy paragraph in order for it to be classed as significant coverage). Looks good. It should be good to go. I am attempting to unsalt the title now and then I'll process the AfC Nom! --Tito Dutta (contact) 22:06, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
That is great, thanks for your help and swift response to this, take care. Tanbircdq (talk) 22:10, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
