DYK for Yeshiva Ohr Elchonon (Jerusalem)

The fact was ... that Yeshiva Ohr Elchonon of Jerusalem was the fourth yeshiva established on three continents by Rabbi Simcha Wasserman? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Yeshiva Ohr Elchonon (Jerusalem). Question: Possible pre-election DYK

Hi Yoninah, I have a question regarding the DYK nomination for Gertrude Foster Brown. It is now green; Proposed hooks note publication of her book Your Vote and How to Use It (1921). I was hoping it could go out before election day as an encouragement to vote, but I'm not sure of the protocol, or on how things get moved from the general nom queue to the Special occasion holding area. Since you seem to know many things, I venture to ask you, thank you :-) Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 12:56, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

Ahn

Hi! I've answered all the feedback at Wikipedia_talk:Did_you_know#Prep_5_.28Ahn.29, in the event you are interested in reviewing and responding. ScooterSponson (talk) 21:49, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

@ScooterSponson: Thanks for the notification. I still think the article needs a complete overhaul. If you would like me to edit it, I can do so within the coming days. Yoninah (talk) 22:36, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
Think we could collaborate on that? I am familiar with the local Filipino publications and can also probably find additional sources to to support paragraphs that you identify need more citations. One of the issues I grappled with in writing the article is that simply striking a paragraph for not having weighty enough sources makes other paragraphs not make sense. For example, if we removed the narrative about the smear campaign, then it doesn't make any sense as to how he came out of nowhere as a reputation management pro. How do you suggest we tackle issues like these? ScooterSponson (talk) 09:15, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

Guess not. LOL. Your edit was good. Made things more concise. I made two related edits afterward, both explained in the edit summaries, just slight tweaks. And I also edited the distance of the death march to match the Stars & Stripes reference. Have responded at the DYK template as well. ScooterSponson (talk) 14:25, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

DYK nomination for Zama (novel)

Hello, new user here, so I apologize if this isn't the proper protocol for responding to comments (I'm not quite used to the wiki layout with regards to communicating to other users). What kind of information would I need to add to the page for its promotion to a DYK article? Should I source some of the plot elements using the novel itself? Verycutedog (talk) 14:27, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Verycutedog, when you want to comment on your DYK review, you can do so by editing the template itself. But I will respond to your comment here. As I mentioned on the review, most of the article is unsourced plot. Looking at Category:Argentine novels, I see that most Argentine novels are being written the same way, with an unsourced lead, a long, unsourced plot summary, and a few sourced notes on the reception. The ratio of sourced to unsourced text, however, does not work for DYK. Take a look at The Color Purple, which in addition to plot summary has other sourced sections. I'm not suggesting that you write something so long, but if you could find some independent sources, like book reviews, that talk about themes or characters, you could add more information and make this page look more complete. If you wish to add sources for your plot summary, you should use independent, third-party sources rather than primary sources (the latter being the novel itself). Good luck, Yoninah (talk) 22:42, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

Curaçao

I have long been fascinated by the Jewish community of Curaçao. Because WiR is focusing this month on articles from the Caribbean, I redlinked Rebecca Cohen Henriquez, the first Curaçaoan woman knighted by the Queen of the Netherlands, but there might be enough information write about the unique history of this community. If you are interested in working on it, or collaborating on it, let me know. SusunW (talk) 20:51, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

@SusunW: there is certainly a lot of material to write a history of the Jews of Curaçao. Here is a sampling of good sources I picked up from Google: Jewish Encyclopedia, Jewish Virtual Library, Shaarei Tsedek, dutchjewry.org, snoa.com, sefarad.org. It's a big job, so I wouldn't mind on working on sections after you outline it. Best, Yoninah (talk) 20:29, 3 December 2016 (UTC)
Great. I did a bit more searching and found this link History of the Jews in Curaçao so I think we go from there. So much history to have such a short article. Looking forward to seeing where we can go with this. SusunW (talk) 13:59, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
@SusunW: so you're talking about expanding History of the Jews in Curaçao, right? Just offhand, there was a famous incident during the Holocaust where Chiune Sugihara, the Japanese diplomat to Lithuania, saved 10,000 Jews by illegally issuing visas to Japan with Curaçao listed as a way station. Yoninah (talk) 20:30, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
See, I *knew* you would find it interesting. I did not know that. I have barely started, but am trying to build a rib-cage so to speak which we can expand from. SusunW (talk) 20:39, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
Yes expanding the History article. When I started, only the lede was there. Feel free to edit, add, whatever. I will come back to it later, but need to do my Caribbean woman of the day :) SusunW (talk) 21:00, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
(random passerby) Off-topic from WiR but there's also a fair bit of data on the economic influence of the Curaçao Jewish community, particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries. I've added a little of this to the article, hope that's ok. Some more to come on trade links to North and South America, but my knowledge and sources entirely expire from 1900 onwards. -- Euryalus (talk) 00:01, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
Euryalus please jump in with whatever you can to help. Long overdue article, our coverage of much of the Caribbean is poor, and it is a really big topic. I discovered the women/men skew years ago and know the history of the Sephardic migrations but little of the economics. I always ask Yoninah for help with Jewish articles if she can as she is a font of knowledge and has access to sources I lack. SusunW (talk) 00:27, 5 December 2016 (UTC)
Apologies for being slightly off-topic, but I'll be attending the US Holocaust Memorial Museum's edit-a-thon on Friday. If you'd like me to try and access something, just let me know. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:45, 5 December 2016 (UTC)

I am not sure how to deal with the controversies which plagued the community throughout its history. Several sources highlight them, but I am not sure that is encyclopedic information. I guess my question would be aren't conflicts just normal over 400 years of history? Or, are they relevant for the development of the community? Is it pushing a POV to not show them? Your thoughts? Hello, I saw that you deleted the information and links I added to the Breslov site. Nanachnation.org is a legit site with accurate information on Breslov. It is a great source for any person who would like to learn more about Breslov. We added important information, and links for those interested in learning more. I cannot imagine why you deleted and reported these links. If I am doing something wrong I would like to know so that i can post the correct information as this topic is important for me. Please let me know before you report me as that seems like the proper thing to do. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ronkruon1 (talkcontribs) 11:05, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Template:Did you know nominations/Makasib

Yoninah, I noticed you recently reviewed this nomination. The nominator/creator, Homiho, has not edited on Wikipedia since December 14, so it seems unlikely he's going to respond (it has already been a week since your review). You might be able to get one of the other editors interested, but I think you'll have to ask them directly if they wish to participate. Best of luck! BlueMoonset (talk) 23:46, 22 January 2017 (UTC)

Incorrect use of fair use images in DYKs

Please be careful to check that a fair use rationale exists for each fair use image in each DYK you promote and hence link to from the main page. We have PSNI GAA which right now is using a fair use image without a rationale. I will fix it this time, but as these are legal matters, they need attention from promoting admins. Template:Did you know nominations/Tony Mott

Yoninah, this was just pulled from prep, and as the original nominator hasn't edited on Wikipedia since December 12, I don't think there's anyone other than you who could deal with the issue raised during the pull. I thought this deserved more than just a ping. Thanks for anything you can do. If you decide not to pursue it, it may have to be closed. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:53, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

A couple of DYK reviews from 2016

Current DYK preps

Yoninah, I noticed you have just been working on Prep 4, which now (temporarily?) has eight hooks in it, one of which seems to be challenge on the talk page.

@BlueMoonset: Oops! Thanks for notifying me. I'll move it out. Yoninah (talk) 20:20, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

The main reason I'm writing is not really this at all, but to note that the Special occasion section has three hooks in it for February 2, which would presumably run either in Prep 5 (which is currently full) or Prep 6 (which is empty). I'm not sure which would be best for the individual hooks, but if you're going to be building sets and moving hooks around, I wanted to be sure you knew about this. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:16, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

I could try to help with this in another hour. I was just trying to fill slots for a few minutes. Yoninah (talk) 20:20, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank you! Whenever you can would be great. I'm going to have to step away from the computer myself for a while. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:30, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

Botticelli Inferno DYK

Hi Yoninah. Sorry for the disturbance, but I would like your opinion on the Botticelli Inferno DYK. It is currently at Prep 5, but without its picture. I think this DYK is interesting enough to be a lead one. But I would like to know what you think. Its nomination page is here. Thank you. Dr. K. 22:24, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

@Dr.K.: good idea. I moved it to Prep 6 1 with the image. Yoninah (talk) 22:28, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank you very much Yoninah. I really appreciate it. Take care. Dr. K. 23:39, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
