RfC on Scientific opinion on climate change

Please comment on Talk:Scientific_opinion_on_climate_change#RFC_Controversy_about_the_policy_section where the topic is in dispute but there are few contributors currently. The RfC was raised by Serten who put in the previous request here. He marked the RfC as of interest to the Politics, government, and law RfC list but not the Maths, science, and technology RfC list, and refers as you see in the comment above to those interested in science as tekkis which perhaps gives an idea of the lack of meeting of minds there. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Sociology: student data highlights

Piotr reminded me I hadn't shared this here; here's a link to the article we wrote for the ASA's Footnotes publication about the great impact their Wikipedia Initiative has had so far to sociology content on WP.

Highlights:

• We’ve had 34 sociology classes participate in our program, and students in those classes edited 967 unique articles. Sociology students all told have contributed 8.76 million bytes of content to Wikipedia.
• We did an article quality study in spring 2012, which found that students improved Wikipedia an average of 88 percent.

Editing Sociology Articles: A guide for students and instructors

Hello! I'm the new Communications Associate for the Wiki Education Foundation. We're in the process of compiling a preliminary draft of an advisory brochure for instructors and students regarding Sociology articles on Wikipedia, and how to most effectively contribute and improve them. We've done this previously for psychology -- you can view the results of that endeavor here.

I'm hoping to hear from regular contributors to sociology-related articles. What would you tell a student, or new Wikipedian, to help them start editing sociology topics? Any advice on editing in this field is welcome, particularly related to sociology-specific issues, such as finding good candidate articles for improvements, what constitutes a good (and bad) source, and what kind of topic posts should be avoided. Any other topics or ideas are welcome.

I'll be posting a draft for review once we have an idea of the shape it will take -- for now, I'm collecting feedback and ideas from the community to guide it. Feel free to contact me here or on my talk page!

Help with two articles?

I'm going to post this on multiple applicable WikiProjects, so my apologies for the cut and paste. I don't really see the purpose in writing a new one for each WP. In any case, I need some help fleshing out the article for Gender Advertisements, the book by Goffman. Long story short, the article was created by a group of students who were sent here with apparently little to no instruction or education about Wikipedia and writing encyclopedia articles, so the page had the standard issues: original research, bad sourcing, tone- the works. I've done enough to show where the book would be notable, but the page does need to be fleshed out to focus on the book's influence on others and a basic outline. I'm not overly familiar with the work, so it'd be better for someone familiar with the work to edit the page. I think that the students probably saw the basic article for gender advertisement, which has similar issues (but better sourcing), and modeled their page after that and after the basic student paper type outline. Both articles could use some work from a savvy editor, if anyone's up for the challenge. I've cleaned out the worst in the book article and threw some sources in, so it has that going for it. Wiki Ed "Editing Women's Studies" brochure: feedback requested

Writing new article on undocumented immigrants: feedback welcome

My name is Katherine and I am currently a senior attending Rice University. I intend on writing a new Wikipedia page titled “Healthcare availability for undocumented immigrants,” for which I thought this page would serve as a great parent article for. In this new article I intend on including four main sections on the following: introduction/background, usage of healthcare services, barriers to accessing the health care system, and relevant federal and state-level policies. Under each of these main sections, except the introduction, there will also be at least one subsection related to particular populations, such as women or specific data found on the topic. This proposed contribution is also part of a course I am taking for my minor on poverty, justice, and human capabilities. Please feel free to offer thoughts, advice, and suggestions! Workplace harassment

I plan on moving the Workplace harassment page to “Workplace Harassment in the United States” page, because the current page only focuses on the United States and I also plan to contribute the content that is specific to the US. If you have any other suggestions as to how I can better move the article, please let me know.

In addition to moving the article, I plan to delete some of the sections, such as “Responsibilities” and “Productivity”, and add new sections, such as “Definition”, “Victims”, “Impacts” and “Preventions”. I believe such change in the page will make the navigation of the page much easier and allow the content to be more specific. Also, I plan to significantly expand the reference section with more scholarly sources.

I would appreciate any kind of help with the article. I am also open to suggestions, so please let me know if there is anything I can do better. Thanks!

@Lindaticket: Looking at this article, I don't think you need to move it, it's pretty generic. You should probably write Workplace harassment in the United States from scratch. @Piotrus:: Hi, Piotrus. Lindaticket also left a note on Talk:Workplace harassment and the response there was that it would be better to leave the material in that article than starting a subarticle. I think so long as the material in the current article is left in place (it's fairly generic, as you say), it's up to Lindaticket which she would prefer to do -- start a new article or expand the old one. Large scale changes to multiple articles

There have been recent massive refactorings of articles egocentrism, obedience (human behavior) and minority influence, at least some of which are in this project's scope. Similar changes to another article, egocentric bias, were reverted by JorisvS with an edit summary of "rv: too many poor-quality edits". Query re: Pandering

In the article for Pandering, this sentence, "An example of pandering would be Hillary Clinton's statement that marriage is a bond between a man and a women in 2004. While in 2015, Hillary Clinton adopted a supportive position of gay marriage to gain support in the political landscape. [2]", I believe is a reflection of the writer's perception of Clinton's actions. The writer assumes Clinton's actions to be Pandering as fact, but in this context I don't accept the writer's example for Pandering as valid. That this is also part of Sociology, humans do sincerely educate themselves, gain enlightenment, and have a change of heart throughout their lives on a variety of social or political issues (I personally am an example). Therefore, I believe the writer's example of Pandering should be deleted or changed as it is more an example of political bias than a fact of Pandering. Perhaps using a hypothetical candidate would be best. Full disclosure... I am not a supporter of Hillary Clinton.Wallee27 (talk) 16:16, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

Anti-psychiatry

I was clicking around and found myself on the Anti-psychiatry page and... it's a mess. I didn't know much of anything about antipsychiatry, but the blatant character attacks and POV pushing were red huge flags, so I started checking sources and none that I've checked so far have anything to do with antipsychiatry. I got the sense from the talkpage that there's a lot of poorly sourced information backing up ideas about psychiatry that stem from Scientology. Their beliefs do have a place in the article... but with proper sourcing and NPOV. There are other POVs being pushed as well. Apparently it's a very contentious topic. Now that I've read up a bit about it, it's actually quite interesting. But cleaning up the article will be a lot to tackle... so I'm posting this on the relevant wikiprojects in the hopes that others might find it interesting too and want to help. :) I've started a discussion about it at Talk:Anti-psychiatry/Archive 8#Sources. Talk Page for Theory of Change?

Firstly my apologies if this is not the correct place to have this discussion (I am not a frequent editor on Wikipedia).

I came come across the Theory of Change page, which is part of Project Sociology, and it needs some attention. While this topic is an area of my academic studies, I do not want to make changes without a talk page first. However, there doesn't seem to one set up - and I am not sure to do that. Can someone assist?

There are three concerns I have the page: (1) it is reads like a pseudo-advertorial given it basically references one main source. (2) it is not written from a neutral point-of-view as it is highly positive of the method, and does not present alternatives ideas (and the Theory of Change is not perfect) and (3) at least one reference [#14] does not even relate to content as indicated. It just seems a very random inclusion for whatever reason.

I would also suggest proposing a page move to change the title of the article to something more descriptive like "Theories of social change" or "Theory of change (sociology)." Looking for feedback on a tool on Visual Editor to add open license text from other sources

Hi all

I'm designing a tool for Visual Editor to make it easy for people to add open license text from other sources, there are a huge number of open license sources compatible with Wikipedia including around 9000 journals. I can see a very large opportunity to easily create a high volume of good quality articles quickly. I have done a small project with open license text from UNESCO as a proof of concept, any thoughts, feedback or endorsements (on the Meta page) would be greatly appreciated.

Racism in South Korea

Hello, I hope I can reach out to somebody here to have a further look on the article Racism in South Korea.

There is a dispute about the use of webblogs and the notability of an event. More is stated on the Talk:Racism in South Korea#Reliability of Weblogs and you can see also some minor notes in the "history". It would be nice to get some more opinions since the article is mainly protected by one user. The issue is that there was a bar owner in Seoul who set up a note at his bar that due to Ebola, he would not let in black people. He apologized four days later, said, it was due to his bad English skills and gave out some beer. I find this event highly insignificant for an article like this. It is as notable as a local murder. Maybe a bad comparison, but still, it should not be in this article. And maybe you can also give your opinion on the use of webblogs. Thanks. --Christian140 (talk) 08:11, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

PS: Actually, I have more issues with the article which completely lacks any scientific approach. The article is basically build up on news reports. However, I think news reports are only legitimate for articles on current events, video games, films and persons. However, articles on racism and discrimination should follow sociological research. Moreover, in contrast to the United States, which has been a melting pot from the beginning, South Korea is a homogene state. So, research is apparently also just at a beginning stage, making knowledge based on news papers even more invalid, I think. Furthermore, I think when the article is named "racism in South Korea" it should follow the definition of Racism. Even, if an wikipedia author does evaluate events by herself/himself, it is original research. Nonetheless, the article also has a section Discrimination against North Korean defectors. In my opinion, racism and discrimination are not the same. Therefore, some could argue that this section does not belong in the article.

Conducting an article like "racism in South Korea" is much effort. Basically because it is not a textbook topic like let's say Product Innovation Charter, where you can find a basic theoretical introduction in books and get very specific literature from databases. So, my approach to start an article like this would be to search for international ranking/indexes that follow a scientific approach to get a country comparison. Than someone could look for literature reviews to get a hold of the state of art of and find some more articles on databases like Google Scholar or ScienceDirect. I cannot see how source articles can give any information on such a new, in regards of South Korea, and specific research field. --Christian140 (talk) 08:11, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

@Christian140: You are mostly right. The article is in a bad shape, full of anecdotal examples based on low quality sources (blogs). Now, news can occasionally be use to fill in such an article, so I wouldn't say all the news sources should be removed, but such an article should be based on academic sources first (and those do exist). Frankly, this article - given its sensitive topic - is not far from being a candidate for WP:TNT, because it seems to be written almost like a rant, in a style that resembles journalistic one much more the encyclopedic. The story about the bar ([2]) could be kept, but not as a weirdly placed image / caption. I think the quote from the ambassador is relevant, and could be reported in the article, but the trivial case of the bar itself is not really worth mentioning, except in the context of citing an ambassador who commented on the racism in Korea. PS. Regarding looking for sources, I'd also suggest the use of Google Books. PPS. I see you nominated it for AfD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Racism in South Korea and I voted keep. Well, having looked into it again I do think that the article is salvagable, but half if not more of the content should probably go. @Piotrus: Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately I also don't have the time to imporve the article. But at least the most "ridiculous" information should go and it is also a problem that Spacecowboy is "protecting" the article, making constructive improvements nearly impossible. The user also has a history of highly questionable edits. Unfortunately, the article is apparently not on the watchlist of many other users. The ambassador opinion could be relevant, but I would not mentioning the bar more than maybe like: "The Kenyan ambassador took up position in the course of a incident in a bar in Itaewon to the topic of racism in Korea. He stated that ′the issue of racism is very deep.′" That is not well worded. I just mean, the focus should clearly lie on the ambassador while the bar event is not notable but just "triggered" a statement. Considering there are ten-thousands of bars in Seoul and the owner made a sign to not let in black people due to Ebola and removed it one hour later, apologized and said it was due to bad English. Literature

The discussion is ongoing with Prokonsul Piotrus' lengthy analysis here: Talk:Racism_in_South_Korea#Problems_with_citations. Further, I propose to place {{TNT}} at the head of the article. I have no time and will not edit the English wikipedia any further. Spacecowboy420 continously bullying and alleging me of being offended by a disagreeing opinion. Although, every edit and change I made at the article, I justified lengthy on the summary and on the talk page, but it was promptly reverted by the user. If another user made the same change, he did not revert it. Although my proposals were backed by other users, he did not accept it. He seems to have a personal problem with me since I have less edits than him on enWP. Well, the English wikipedia is not my home wiki and I just wanted to raise attention for a biased, not well-sourced article. Unfortunately, unsuccessful. I will leave the literature that Piotrus collected and that I expanded, here.

Futher citation issues, just for reference

Also, there are of course more citation issues with the article. In the section "employment discrimination", it states "with even Irish expatriates suffering some discrimination, with South Koreans viewing them stereotypically as drunkards." This is not in the content of the citation [3], also not on the second page. However, by googling you can at east find something [4]. However, it is a single incidents, so you can not conclude that "South Koreans viewing them stereotypically".

Moreover, it states "Many employers in South Korea often ask for a photograph as part of a job application, to ease the process of employers engaging in racist discrimination." This sounds like the reason for application photos is to discriminate other races. However, the reason of them stem from history of course. Application procedures differ from country to country, and in some countres, photos are usual and in other countries are not. Nevertheless, there is a risk that a photo makes application discrimation easier. The statement is biased.

In the section "Marriages and relationships". "International couples have often been forced to leave South Korea due to most South Koreans harshly disapproving of relationships between South Koreans and foreigners." The source only can be found after the following sentence. It is about a football player, who left Korea with his wife. [5] There is no general statement, still, here on wikipedia it is depicted as if this was often the case.

One might should also note the conditions under which the article was created, with the main author stating: "It's pretty disappointing that the article is very small, considering the extremely widespread nature of racism in South Korea. I'll try to expand the article a bit." It is also quite dangerous for the neutrality of an article, writing with such a biased opinion.

Problematic article

List of countries and dependencies by population is an article that is relevant to this project. After having it drop off my watchlist some time ago I returned on 9 August 2016 to find that the population table is constantly being edited without any indication of sourcing, or edit summaries, usually by IPs or newly registered editors. The complete lack of sourcing for new edits means that the data in this article is dubious at best. One particular problem that I found is that data templates, which are used to automatically calculate today's population based on official sources, have been removed and replaced with unsourced manual calculations. Several times now I have had to restore these templates after yet another unsourced, unexplained change.[6][7][8][9][10] I have now tagged the article to identify issues, and requested semi-protection, but the input by responsible editors who can update the article with accurate, sourced data is needed. --AussieLegend (✉) 04:40, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

Korean ethnic nationalism

User:Spacecowboy420 is constantly reverting my changes on the article Korean ethnic nationalism, demanding consensus, although my changes are well explained. [11]

1. Hwanung is the spelling that also the wikipedia article uses by the revised romanization. Also, Hangul and Hanja is not needed here, since it is in the article about Hwanung.
2. For the removal of Myers claims, see Talk:Korean ethnic nationalism#Too Much POV Bias in the Article. If needed, I can also give more explanations. But I think the possibilities are well explained on the talk page. Since more than two weeks, no one commented on the talk page, so, there was nothing critical in changing it. I definitely do not have to ask all wikipedians if I can edit it like Spacecowboy420 claims.
3. I fixed the template that showed an error
4. The sentence: "North Korea is rumored to have abducted foreign women to marry to American men that defected to North Korea in order to keep these American men from having relationships with North Korean women." does not have any source at all. Also, it says "is rumored". This shouldn't be in this article. Also, the source of the following sentence does not back this claim.
5. For the other sentence, also see talk page. It doesn't belong in this article because there is no direct connection to nationalism.

Amateur observations of this article (Food deserts)

This article on food deserts is very organized and full of useful information. The links to the citations are diverse and scholarly and the subheadings are easy to navigate. In addition, the language is simple and understandable and sounds like it is coming from an actual human being who has done the adequate research on this topic. However, I feel that there can be much more information added to this article. The section on food deserts in countries seems to be lumped together into single geographical groups. Maybe more information on the regions within each country, or a diagram representing the geographical differences of food desert density within each will bring to light the smaller realities of certain peoples within those countries. This, in turn, will also help avoid the persistence of stereotypes about countries like Africa that show the country as always hungry, poor, and unable to take care of themselves. Another piece of information that could be added is some literature about the perspective of large supermarkets. Although it would be quite difficult to get this type of information because they are seen as constantly silent in food desert matters, it would also be very interesting to see a possible perspective of the other side. Finally, a section that is missing in this article is a section on how communities within food deserts have adjusted to their situation. The advent of urban farming would be a great place to start. For example, urban farming in Detroit is a very popular topic, especially within the documentary Urban Roots.Jade Everage 06:51, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

Transformation of culture is a mess

It looks more like someone's personal essay than an encyclopedia article. It would probably be easier to merge whatever is worth keeping into a related article and delete the rest. I created a merge proposal suggesting it be merged into Culture change, but if someone has a better idea for an article to merge it into, then we should go with that. Criticism section of the Symbolic Interactionism article

The "Criticisms" section of the symbolic interactionism article reads more like a defense and elaboration of the theory rather then actually laying out criticisms leveled against it by its opponents. Instead it smugly concludes that some social scientists/ scholars don't know that they are applying it in their own "theoretical assumptions and formulations". It also just blatantly states "language is the source of all meaning" rather then "language is viewed/thought to be the source of all meaning" or something more neutral. A statement which is certainly contestable (what about symbolic/image meaning? what about song and unspoken thought?). I edited the statement but I suspect someone might change it back. Proposed deletion of Typification

The article Typification has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Wikipedia isn't a dictionary, but this article reads exactly like a badly formatted dictionary entry. Exactly one sentence has been added since its creation 7 years ago, despite it being frequently linked to. It serves little to no purpose, and belongs as a redirect to Wiktionary at the least.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Male expendability

The sources cited (most of which are simply wikilinks to the Journals, not the article) do not use the term "male expendability". I am not sure if the article meets notability requirements and appears more as an attempt to coin the phrase; i.e., noncompliant with WP:OR. I attempted to speedy delete it, but the tag was removed. Before I nominate it for AfD, I would appreciate more input. AnaSoc, per WP:Canvassing, you need to use more neutral wording when asking others to weigh in. The above is a mischaracterization of the literature since it is not solely dictionary sources, but sociology sources as well, that define sexism more broadly. Similar goes for feminist sources and other sources on the topic. It is also biased of you to only alert this WikiProject and not the others, but I'm not too concerned about that. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

This article had huge copyright problems from an anonymous edit on 1 April 2014. The article is now subject to a copyright violation investigation. I have started a rewrite based on the version prior to the 1 April 2014 copy/paste dump. However, this version does not contain any of the good material added after 1 April 2014. I will try to salvage what I can, but intend to wait until admins have had a look at this in case there is a better/easier to sort out the good edits from the bad material. New essay on race and ethnicity

I've repurposed a well-received long thread post – on "race" and "ethnicity" as labels on Wikipedia and why they're generally a poor idea – and posted it to WP:Race and ethnicity. It's a "crash course" educational piece rather than the typical "do it this way not that way" Wikipedia essay. People may find it of interest. It doesn't address race from the Racial bias on Wikipedia angle, which is certainly a valid one, within the confines of race as a social construct and all the effects that has. Rather, it's an anti-racialism summary of why people's beliefs that "races" are a biological fact are confused and misleading. Maratha reservation movement

As of now, this deserves an article (passes GNG). The movement has been going on for around five years: plenty of sources. Also, other documented requests redates the events of Maratha Kranti Morcha. I have created a rudimentary draft, and added some sources at Draft talk:Maratha Aarakshan movement#Usable sources. But unfortunately I dont have much experience with creating such articles. Would somebody help me please? But I can work on it with help/collaboration. Also, I can bring in the relevant sources from last 10 years easily.

Once the article is in mainspace/listed by search engines, a lot more people would add to it; and I will handle the issues of POV, adding sources, and other stuff including gnoming. Campbell Collaboration collaboration

The Campbell collaboration (sister group to the Cochrane collaboration are possibly interested in forming a collaboration to use their systematic reviews of policy interventions to help update Wikipedia (analagous to Cochrane's medical meta-analyses). WikiJournal of Humanities published first article

The WikiJournal of Humanities is a free, peer reviewed academic journal which aims to provide a new mechanism for ensuring the accuracy of Wikipedia's humanities, arts and social sciences content. We started it as a way of bridging the Wikipedia-academia gap. It is also part of a WikiJournal User Group along with Wiki.J.Med and Wiki.J.Sci. The journal is still starting out and not yet well known, so we are advertising ourselves to WikiProjects that might be interested.

Please review birth rate effect additions to the Population decline article

More eyes are needed, please, for the additions at [12] to Population decline#Interpretation of statistical data:

White nationalists use evidence of a declining birth rate in support of their extremist views and calls to violence. Lower fertility rates are generally associated with dramatic increases in population health and longevity. Increasing populations are not necessary to maintain economic growth and social vitality because of advances in automation and workers living healthy lives much longer into old age. Declining populations require fewer scarce resources and pollute less. Fewer dependents mean that families, regions, and societies can achieve more productive uses of available resources and increase their quality of life. While there were in the past advantages to high fertility rates, that "demographic dividend" has now largely disappeared.

Utah Polygamy and Law Since 2000

I'm wondering if someone from this WikiProject could take a look at this article and assess it. It was created by a student editor as part of Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Brigham Young University/HIST 221 - Gonzales - The United States Since 1877 (Winter 2019), and student moved the article to the mainspace on their own without submitting it for WP:AFC review. There are some WP:MOS and other similar errors which can be cleaned up, but my main concerns are that it's a WP:CONTENTFORK which might not need it's own stand-alone article. I don't believe the university course this student created the article for has ended; so, it's possible that they are still going to get graded on their work; at the same time, it's been added to the mainspace which means that it probably shouldn't be left as is just because it's part of a student editing project. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:44, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Society, social class, social structure of Foo country - separate or same topics?

I've noticed we have some articles on topics like:

• society of Canada/social class in Canada/social structure of Canada
• society of Germany/social class in Germany/social structure of Germany

• society of Italy/social class in Italy/social structure of Italy
• society of Spain/social class in Spain/social structure of Spain
• society of Poland (redirects to demographics)/social class in Poland/social structure of Poland
• society of Russia/social class in Russia/social structure of Russia
• society of Brazil/social class in Brazil/social structure of Brazil
• society of Mexico/social class in Mexico/social structure of Mexico
• society of China (redirects to Chinese culture)/social class in China/social structure of China

etc. I haven't done a complete overview for all countries, but, first, I think social structure is a bigger concept than social class, so I think it should be possible for social class in Fooland and social structure of Fooland to co-exist, except that social structure is not a very common term and when it comes to country overview, it is likely synonymous with society. Consider: what is the difference between "society of Fooland" abd "social structure of Fooland"? Should eventually an article on social structure of the United States exist separately from society of the United States, or are there too synonymous? I know that in sociological theory society and social structure are separate constructs, but when it comes to specifics in the 'by country' overview... this becomes really blurry. Content evaluation: Preference falsification The article content is relevant to the topic; however, the article fails to cover newer developments regarding the topic, including new research such as the 'Living a Lie: Theory and Evidence on Public Preference Falsification' paper by John Duffy and Jonathan Lafky. These new developments deserve their own sections with the larger topic and should be added to provide a holistic picture of the topic. Editors who watchlist the article Scientific racism might be interested in looking at the related article Race and intelligence, which has been an area of contentious debate and edit-warring. (It is currently locked down for 3 days.) While Scientific racism is, I think, a good example of how Wikipedia handles fringe, the article Race and intelligence has a very different tone and content, as is clear from the first paragraph of the lede. I found an article the other day titled A Critical Guide to Knowledge Society Newspeak: Or, How Not to Take the Great Leap Backward, and none of the information that it lists is on the knowledge society page. I have noticed that a number of articles in the do not have the WikiProject Sociology template in their talk pages. One project I would propose to WikiProject members is to scour sociology related Wikipedia Categories to locate articles that ought to be added to our WikiProject by placing the above-mentioned template into the article's talk page. Hi all, I've boldly updated your project's peer review page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Sociology/Peer review) by updating the instructions and archiving old reviews.

The new instructions use Wikipedia's general peer review process (WP:PR) to list peer reviews. Your project's reviews are still able to be listed on your local page too.

The benefits of this change is that review requests will get seen by a wider audience and are likely to be attended to in a more timely way (many WikiProject peer reviews remain unanswered after years). Draft:Art of Hosting

I'm not sure if this falls within the realm of sociology, but the psychology WikiProject is only semi-active and this does deal with human interactions so this may fall into the sociology wheelhouse at least somewhat. I was looking at Draft:Art of Hosting and the draft needs some work but I genuinely don't know how to approach this. It needs to be clearer, since some parts of it are kind of muddy as far as explanations go (ie, what it is, how it differs from other approaches, etc) but I think it would be best if someone more familiar with writing these types of articles goes about helping the editor (@Asimong:). It looks like a notable topic, but I'm a little concerned that it being at AfC may just result in the draft getting declined and there not being enough explanation for the article to be improved so it can be accepted. Anyone interested in helping the editor out? I've pinged them here so they can introduce themselves and all that good stuff. This may be salvageable as the topic seems notable, but it is a red flag where the article's suggested name seems very promotional (it is a title of a recently published article, see footnote 7). • Piotrus I was worried about that as well, but it looks like others have used the name. The earliest source (in the article) that uses the specific term "Art of Hosting" is from 2015, so it may have had an earlier term. The article has the term "participatory leadership" so that may be the earlier term (the one source with this in the title is from 2011), although I wonder if this could be called just "hosting". I suppose that there is likely a question of how different this is from the topic of participatory management as well. @Asimong: can you help resolve these questions?   ReaderofthePack, "Art of Hosting" is fine, it seems to be used, but "The Art of Hosting and Harvesting Conversations that Matter" is not, I think it refers only to a small number of works and may be advertising. I'd just like to touch in here and say thank you, ReaderofthePack! I've been rather busy to work on this for the last few weeks but hope to get back on the case soon. Simon Grant (talk) 13:03, 5 December 2020 (UTC) The background is that I came across Art of Hosting, and talking to their people it seemed like several of those, who may be perhaps too involved and with a vested interest to author the article themselves, were happy to help assemble a good list of references and help ensure that it was a good representation of the field. It's a small community, but I guess no smaller than many of the academic communities around particular practices. The challenges here that the Art of Hosting community has to work with are that (a) with a few notable exceptions, it has not yet made a great impression on the academic mainstream, and for that reason there are not yet many secondary sources; and (b) there is no actual central organisation, unlike for topics like Theory U or Nonviolent Communication. Pietrus, and Asimong my objection is not only that it is advertising, but that it makes or at least implies a questionable claim to ownership of a general phrase. So, feeling up to a challenge this evening, I rewrote and accepted it. I tried to clarify that this is a specific technique as applied by a specific group, and I changed from passive to active. I did not attempt to really deal with the section on Practice Principles, which I think is too jargon-ridden to be encyclopedic—but there are many other articles where one could say the same. I may try some more here. Asimong, I'd appreciate clarification of the legal status of the name. Pietrus, if you can do anything more with this, please do. Would some members of this WikiProject take a look at this new article? Marchjuly, I could see potential for it to become a legitimate article, perhaps roughly similar to an article like Syncophant. @Marchjuly and Sdkb: Right now it can be deleted due to not having any references. The topic may be notable, but the current execution brings up the WP:TNT consideration. I'd recommend WP:PROD or WP:AFD over speedy. • Update: For reference, the article was restored as a redirect by another editor because it was unsourced and per WP:NOTDICT. The creator of the article also had their account globally locked by the WMF (which means they most likely did something pretty bad and thus can't really come back without WMF approval). I need some help on this Talk:Cross-cultural studies proposed merger. My first cited addition to Wikipedia was on the Cultural universal page and was reverted. In response, I have been trying figure out how to improve the page and when researching the topic I thought Cross-cultural studies might be the best fit, and might get new opinions. So I proposed this merger. At this point it seems that both Cross-cultural studies and Cultural universals are orphaned pages and haven't garnered any collaborative interest. There is also suspect behavior like a deletion on the Human Universals page marked Afd which have shaken my assumption of good faith. I reached out to the anthropology wiki project not realizing it is inactive and received no response there either.

I am new and genuinely trying to learn and improve my editing and Wikipedia. So I thought I'd ask for advice on how to handle this here as a next step before I walk away from the whole thing. Which is about where I'm at. DHHornfeldt (talk) 04:12, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

Democratization of knowledge

I stumbled upon the article Democratization of knowledge, which seems quite important, but with a poorly defined subject and poor treatment. It's currently part of the wikiproject philosophy (which seems somewhat appropriate, but hasn't a lot to do with the way the subject is currently treated and didn't really help in improving the article this far). @Sdkb:, yah, that is a coincidence! Before we go the DYK route, we really need to nail down whether that was really the case, or not. I thought so too, having read it in more than one place. I alluded to this uncertainty on the TP of the article. Paoletti, who spent 20 years writing her book, seems the most authoritative on the topic, but I only have access to parts of it. The Intro and relevant parts of Chap. 5 are readable online, and give a different view. My personal view, having only come upon this recently, is that there is a fairly complex history and evolution over two centuries and not all uniformly in one direction, which may have led to some over-hasty conclusions among writers having done some research, but not enough. I can't understand why those 19th historians didn't pay more attention to WP:DUE WEIGHT; will have to check my 1865 edition of Ye Olde Wikipaedia and see what they said about it then. We should probably adjourn this to Talk:Gendered associations of pink and blue so others can take part, too. If we could figure out a good DYK out of it, that would be great! Black Matriarchy

Hi, just getting in touch to draw your attention to this article, which I came across while I was resolving or removing "by whom" tags. I am no kind of expert on this topic, but when I googled "black matriarchy" in google scholar, the majority of articles referred to it as a myth, and a racist myth at that. As it stands the idea is presented in the article as if it were an established consensus with little criticism. If there is anybody here with some expertise on this topic, a complete rewrite might be in order.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
