article title for bridge scour

I am way out of my area of knowledge, but based upon a quick google and reading up, I think you have it well-labeled as "bridge scour". If it is hyrdraulic action that some might be thinking of as "hydraulic bridge scour", a redirect to your bridge scour article makes logical sense to me. I hope that is helpful. Best wishes for the New Year. Mark Vaoverland (talk) 06:23, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Good sense! Should I make a page called hydraulic bridge scour or hydraulic scour and then make a redirect from there? Thanks.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:43, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

redirects

I have done these two. Here is what I did, for future reference:

1. ask for the subject (ie: hydraulic bridge scour)

2. when it cant' find it, I create a page with that name

3. on the new page, instead of beginning an article, I typed; #REDIRECT bridge scour

4. repeat same as about for "hydraulic scour" to create another redirect page

I will have to look into "scour". Also, I am not very knwoledgeabel about statistics, suggest you inquire with someone more in that area of WP.

Vaoverland (talk) 07:59, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

scour

I note that the "scour" article has now has a "dab flag" at the top referring to your "bridge scour" article. If that was your effort, it seems well-done. I think that this approach in this instance is as good or better than creating a complete dab page and forcing everyone to use it (i.e. anyone looking of for that search engine has already reached the correct page as it is now structured). Mark Vaoverland (talk) 08:27, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

BTW, I am quite interested in roads and highways and, obviously bridges as well. I liked the new article which seems to be balanced, understandable to a novice, referenced and has a photo. I added a cat for it. Good job! Vaoverland (talk) 08:29, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

bridge scour

This one would be good for DYK. The leading cause of bridge failure is a great potential hook. Vaoverland (talk) 08:30, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Anna! Good work with the Bridge scour article. When you're using the same reference several times, you can name it so that you don't have to duplicate it. See here, it explains how to do this. I've fixed the duplicated references in your article. Cheers. Chamal talk 09:51, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Just figured out your user name... Viriditas (talk) 11:03, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Then you've obviously been tracking my edits. haha. You can still call me Anna, but my last name is not Frodesiak. By the way, you are the first to get it. And, I looked you up a long time ago, Viriditas. double hehe. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, what do you think of the Environment merge suggestion? --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:23, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
It's weird, because I never thought of it before today, and than whammo, it hit me. I think it was more of a visual thing. I expected it to be a name, because I saw a name on the screen, but then once I looked closer, I saw that it wasn't.  :) The merge sounds like a good idea and I encourage you to take the lead on this. Viriditas (talk) 11:40, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
Well, I hope it put a smile on your face. As for the Enviro matter, can you advise? My guess is that I should put a merge suggestion box on the appropriate articles/sections, then wait for a while to observe objections/suggestions, then create the new article and cut and paste, then put 'main article' links and redirects in appropriate places. Please advise, remembering I do suffer from CVLD. Thanks. Oh, and an article I made called Bridge scour will appear on the DYK home page with photo soon. I you have any edits to improve it, please feel free.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:00, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
The merge tags are a very good idea. Oh, and good job with bridge scour. That's a very nice article and congrats on yet another DYK. I'll take a fresh look at the Hawaii article tomorrow. Thanks for keeping me in the loop and enjoy your weekend/day/night. Viriditas (talk) 12:19, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Not a Vandal

Yea I know the mug shot thing would be called vandalism, but all the other edits of mine you undid was actually me fixing vandalism. I know the 2006 election thing would seem like I am a vandal, but I'm going by the rules. Rockyobody (talk) 04:14, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Your thread at WP:VPM

Hi - Looking around a bit I see you've realized user:Rockyobody is not some mad vandal. You might want to add a comment to your thread at Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous). No big deal, but it will help to keep other folks from spending time looking into it. -- Rick Block (talk) 04:14, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I already retracted my comment on Village Pump. I hope I haven't upset anyone. I was acting in good faith. I also left a message for Rockyobody explaining.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:18, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
No problem (and it's good that you've contacted Rockyobody). BTW - "worst vandal I have ever seen"? Really? Perhaps that's a good thing, but if this is anywhere close to the worst you've seen I can assure you that there are vandals that are several orders of magnitude worse. I think we catch most of the really bad ones pretty quickly (if you haven't seen any, that may speak to how fast they're caught). In any event, no harm done. Please read Wikipedia:Vandalism and do what it says (mostly, just revert it yourself and then leave the appropriate warning from Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace - increasing the severity only if there's a previous lower level warning). Happy editing! -- Rick Block (talk) 04:33, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Archive 26

Heh, I just found this in my user space. I have no idea how it got there. Did you create it? According to this you did. That's really strange, any idea what happened? Viriditas (talk) 13:46, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

"Archive 26" ...would be a good movie name.
Yes. I wrote that. Did I accidentally post it in your archives? It was ages ago and you never repied. Curious. Anyway, I got an answer to the question. If someone gets a message and the brown bar pops up and say 'new message' and 'last change', and you click 'last change', if you got two messages really close together can a user miss the first message? Just a thought.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:58, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
Heh. Well, I created the archive at 04:30, 1 January 2009 [1], however, you created User:Viriditas/Archive 26 at 01:31, 4 January 2009. I think I can piece together what happened. You were trying to follow a previous discussion, and when you found that it was archived three days previously with the standard template, This is an archive of past discussions. Do not edit the contents of this page. If you wish to start a new discussion or revive an old one, please do so on the current talk page, you then decided to edit the User archive page instead, probably without giving it a thought. Unfortunately, this was an archived page, and I never saw the comment until yesterday. :( So tell me, what was the answer you received regarding the pie chart on Bridge scour? I'm going to move the old comment into the archive. And you're right, "Archive 26" would make a good name for a film. Care to tell me what it's about? :) Viriditas (talk) 09:34, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
I just realized that it was supposed to go on my current talk page, so I moved it there. Viriditas (talk) 09:39, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Re: User:Anna Frodesiak/Cranial Volume Limitation Disorder

Hi there! Happy holidays to you and yours. Thanks for the cranial volume bit. I think my head is actually shrinking. Not a good sign.

I asked before whether or not one can use a photo from a .gov and you answered that it was a pie chart an not a photo. Well, it has come up again. I just made Bridge_scour and I want to put in a photo from:

[2]

which is a US dept of agriculture pdf on the subject. Can I just go ahead and grab it?

Thanks!--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:31, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Ahhh, okay. I will try and watch where I post next time. Pardon me.
The photo/pie chart/scour matter turned out this way...It was not a pie chart, but a photo from Dept of Agriculture. Someone from Wikicommons said that if it was a US federal site photo, then fair game, but State is another matter. The pic in question is now the topmost image in the Bridge scour article.
As for "Archive 26", it would have to be about the discovery of buried information from the 1950s calling for genetic ownership and modification of staple grains to feed a genetically altered ruling class and starve the masses. Then the dorky scientist who discovered the info would get chased all over the map by 'Enemy of the State' types, who would eventually win. The end would be the inevitable Ppesident of a leading nation hissing into the camera like in the 'Body Snatchers'. Give it to Ridley or Mamet. Oscar material for sure.
Or better still, Jimbo is this Wikimafia kingpin and someone discovers one of his subpages -- Archive 26. Editors start disappearing. Plots thicken. Edit wars with real weapons. People get blocked...permanently. It's Jimbo and the boys with the cement. One guy gets this mysterious 'speedy delete' tag on his userpage. His guts tell him to split town for a few days, but he doesn't. Then a bunch of bookworms show up at his door....... --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:47, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Apogastropoda

Hi Anna, Hello, so you have an interest in gastropods, or in gastropod taxonomy? That's cool. Thanks for your gastropod contribution. Please do check us out at WikiProject Gastropods. [3] Your article seems perhaps to be based on a taxonomy which is currently a number of years old. Maybe it is the Ponder and Lindberg one? (I am not sure.) In any case we are attempting to use as a standard the Bouchet and Rocroi taxonomy, which you can see at [4]. It's hard to get the gastropod articles up to date, as there are so many thousands of them and a lot are based on older taxonomies. Can I say that if or when we create an article based on another system of taxonomy, we need to state that clearly up front in the intro, so that people don't get too confused. Best wishes to you, Invertzoo (talk) 15:41, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure if you're watching this page. If I don't hear from you, I will write on your page.
I tried to read up on the taxonomy systems in use and couldn't quite figure it out. I gather that mixing the word clade with subsomethingorother is not a good idea. I am not sure. Please feel free to edit the page so will understand better. I don't know which system is the right one.
I will post at the links you gave me and see what they say. Thanks for tips!--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:18, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
I brought the articles Apogastropoda and Vetigastropoda in line with the latest insights in the scientific journals. Anyway, you're doing a great job, but try to stick to the taxonomy of Bouchet and Rocroi, otherwise things will get confused. JoJan (talk) 18:52, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Hi again Anna, Thank so much for persevering, please do not be put off by this potentially very confusing taxonomy stuff. I wrote a reply to your question on the WIkiProject Gastropods talk page here: [5].It is not easy to get up to date with all this, but the Bouchet & Rocroi taxonomy is definitely the one we are using right now, and we hope to gradually update all of the gastropod taxoboxes so that they correspond with that. It is easier to understand if you have a copy of the original paper from Malcologia. Anyway, Ponder and Lindberg is now out of date as are all the other older taxonomies. Gastropod taxonomy will undoubtedly continue to change over the next 10 or 20 years as more and more DNA and RNA studies are done, but like I said, Bouchet & Rocroi is the best thing we have right now. Please feel free to answer here or on my talk page if you like. Invertzoo (talk) 01:41, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Category:Apogastropods

For every category you create, you should specify parent categories to which it belongs. You can do this by listing the parents near the bottom of the page, each enclosed in double brackets like so:

[[Category:Gastropods]]
[[Category:Parent2]]

Contact me if you have questions about this. Best regards, --Stepheng3 (talk) 20:20, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. I will. Can you suggest a stub or two to create? I like the ones where I put a bunch of pictures together to show examples. I think it's all bags of fun.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:02, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't know enough about gastropods to know what articles are needed at this time. You might try asking someone at Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods. --Stepheng3 (talk) 03:15, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

New gastropod stubs for large taxa?

Hi Anna,

I went through the article Taxonomy of the Gastropoda (Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005), which is currently our "Bible" for taxonomy, and I turned all of the taxa names into links. If you go through the list, even the ones that are blue links could benefit from one of your very nice "image collages" for the taxobox. And the ones that are red links, especially the larger Clades and Informal groups, could use one of your stubs. Obviously the taxa that contain a lot of blue linked families will have more images for you to work from in making the collages. Hope this is helpful. I am also posting a copy of this on the Project Gastropods page. All the best wishes to you, from sluggy Invertzoo (talk) 23:42, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello Anna, it is sometimes better for communication to "Enable e-mail from other users" in "my preferences". Thank you for cooperation in gastropod articles. --Snek01 (talk) 00:23, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Sluggy! Great! Thank you. I am on the case!

Hi Snek01! Email huh? I am not sure why. Can you tell me? I am worried about Nigerians wanting selling Viagara.

A joke for you...

This Arion lusitanicus was held up and robbed at gunpoint by a Banana slug. After the incident, the police asked the Arion lusitanicus to describe the Banana slug. The Arion lusitanicus replied "No. It all happened so fast."

You've probably heard it, being sluggers and all. --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:49, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello Anna, if you will allow Wikipedia:E-mailing users so other wikipedia users will be able to send you an email during wikipedia interface. It is safely. Your email address can stay hidden and you will see the email address of a sender. Then you can consider to answer or not. If you will answer at discussion page, you will never reveal your email if you do not want to. You can also disable this feature anytime. I wanted to send you rather an personal message instead of public message, because I am very bad in communication and also bad in English. Have a nice day. --Snek01 (talk) 13:45, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

LOL! You told it too fast. Can you repeat it? --Snek01 (talk) 11:55, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Well... I wanted to compliment what you do good, to criticise what you do bad, to write my opinion what could be done better. I am glad about your edits so I can not write everything at discussion page because my personality is not far from Rodney McKay. Allow me to email you and I will write a gastropod article of your choice for you. Thank you. Have a nice day. --Snek01 (talk) 11:55, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Snek! I made an email for use on wikipedia, annaswikiaccount @ gmail . com Please feel free to email me. By the way, don't worry about your English. It's fine. I look forward to your critique of my stuff. Please be honest so that I can help improve and be a good Wikipedian. I'm glad you liked my stupid joke.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:17, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Wow, thank you for your cooperation. --Snek01 (talk) 18:23, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Dear Snek, This is just a friendly reminder in advance, that any discussion that relates to possible policies or guidelines about the content and style of articles needs to take place in Wikipedia discussion space. Private email is never a suitable vehicle for attempting to negotiate style policies, because there needs to be a public record of what is said on those type of issues in order that a consensus can be reached. Here is a current comment from JoJan (the founder of WikiProject Gastropods) on the question of composite images: "Personally, I like them, especially for articles about families and the ranks above. They give a nice overview of the different species within that rank. And furthermore, it's pleasing to the eye and may attract more readers. A caption is optional. Anna is doing a good job and has become an asset for this project. JoJan (talk) 09:15, 4 March 2009 (UTC)" I also like the composite images Anna has made, I think they are very attractive and I agree 100% with JoJan's comments. Best wishes to Snek and to Anna, Invertzoo (talk) 12:46, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

"The best shaving cream ever"

I liked your joke about the slime of gastropods being used at some point to make the best shaving cream ever, so imagine how surprised I was to see that the slime of Helix aspersa is already being used as a face cream (supposedly)! Just google> helix aspersa face cream <and you will get thousands of results! Crazy huh? As it turns out someone already mentioned that in the article, but without a citation. Invertzoo (talk) 23:15, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

So cool! I have a travel mate who uses hair gel for shaving cream, or even snot when nothing else is available (no kidding), so I figured it would just be natural. I think it would be a good emergency shaving cream for backpackers.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:48, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Maybe so, but I imagine the snails would not be too thrilled to be rubbed against someone's 1-day-old stubble! Invertzoo (talk) 15:07, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Sluggy opinion

Hi Anna, Well, OK, Snek gave his long elaborate opinion with a capital O on the project talk page. So far however we have a consensus which supports a different view of things. Your work is really excellent and very much needed here, so please feel entirely welcomed and very much appreciated, both on Wikipedia in general and in WikiProject Gastropods in particular. If you feel even the slightest bit "bitten" [7] we deeply apologize. Snek also likes your work, and does not mean to scare you away. Sluggy hugs to you, Invertzoo (talk) 21:59, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Not bitten at all. Not a dot, not a whit, not a morsel, not a bit. Snek has been very kind. I think he is very fond of images in general, has valid concerns and opinions, and likes things done a certain way. I feel like I have sort of rocked his boat. He has even been so kind as to suggest, through email, image editing software, and links to gastropod databases. Hugs to you too, and thanks for your sensitivity.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:42, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
OK, good good good! Us slugs do have a lot of teeth on our radulas but we normally gnaw away on things like carrots and tomatoes. As we say in our phylum: "May your way be ever smoothed with slime." Best, Invertzoo (talk) 01:46, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

I also need a hug! I am carnivorous snail only in first days of March after hibernation and before aestivation. And what people do not now, that snails are capable contributing wikipedia while aestivating. ;) --Snek01 (talk) 18:05, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

And a big hug for you too Snek.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:59, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

New stubs?

How about creating one for Aporrhaidae, using Aporrhais pespelecani as a basis for it? Best, Invertzoo (talk) 21:33, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Also there are a lot of very nice nudibranch and other sea slugs images waiting to be used. If you scroll far enough down the project page you will see them. They almost all have genus and species on them already:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Gastropods

And they all need a stub article. You can search using the scientific name via google and get very good easy to understand info from The SeaSlug Forum at [8]. Just some ideas, as you asked for suggestions. Best wishes to you, sluggy Susan Invertzoo (talk) 21:39, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm on the case! I will cook it up in one of my sandboxes and post the stub ASAP. I have bags of classes all weekend so I may have to put it up Monday.
I only ever visited the front page of WikiProject Gastropods once. I never noticed all the pics needing articles. That should keep me busy. They are just soooo cute those little things. Thanks for the suggestions! All the best to you Sluggy. Anna.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:55, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
Quick stupid question: Is Aporrhaidae a species, genus, family, or what? Is it the same as Aporrhaididae? Just a quick clue of where it fits (above this, below that, parallel to Aporrhais pespelecani?) Thanks.

Oh boy, I was going way too fast when putting that together, so now I have to claim that as my own double or triple stupidity, sorry. And it was spelled "Aporrhaididae" in the article on A. pespelecani and in the category page too! Makes my head spin.

Google has equal numbers of it spelled Aporrhaididae and Aporrhaiidae, but many more examples of it spelled Aporrhaidae, which I suppose is the correct spelling. I am going to be out all day tomorrow so I won't be on WIkipedia all day so I can't do much research or let you know anything until Sunday. I think maybe you could ask Snek if he would check and see if Aporrhaidae is indeed the correct original spelling for the family, and then we need to standardize it throughout.

So anyway, however it is correctly spelled, the taxon is a family. In the Animalia, all the taxa that end "-idae" are families. Take a look here, where they spell it Aporrhaiidae, (the AnimalBase pages are often very useful but are not always really complete in terms of the genera and species lists and also not 100% reliable (nothing ever is)): [9]

Best to you, from a dizzy slug Susan Invertzoo (talk) 23:44, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

P.S. I tried to run around and quickly change all the spellings to Aporrhaidae, except that we still have an extra category spelled "Aporrhaididae". That will have to wait, as I can't do any more now. Best Invertzoo (talk) 23:57, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

UPDATE: I checked my best authority, Gary Rosenberg of the Philadelphia Academy and he spells it Aporrhaidae, That's good enough for me! Invertzoo (talk) 00:27, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm on it. Sorry to get you running around checking. Next time I will dig deeper before asking for help. The "-idae" meaning family bit really clears up a lot. I will research the suffixes so I know what's what a bit better. The whole family, subfamily, genus thing is still confusing. Anyhoo, I will post the stub ASAP, and thanks for your help. All the best to you!! --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:46, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

No not at all, it was entirely my fault, if I had spelled the family name correctly you could have googled it OK and got lots of info. By the way the best way to remember the sequence of the taxa is KPCOFGS, in other word Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. There are a lot of possible acronyms here, you can look and choose the one that appeals too you the most, as being the most memorable:[10]

I just got back from Wilmington Delaware having been gone all day since 6:40 am, so I am tired and will write some more tomorrow. best to you and congratulations on your first nudibranch article, Invertzoo (talk) 02:09, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

I kind of like "Keep pots clean or family gets sick" but whichever acronym catches your eye or makes you laugh is good, it doesn't matter as long as it is easily remembered. Invertzoo (talk) 16:38, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Pectenodoris trilineata

Yes, well done on your new nudibranch article. Aren't they beautiful creatures? Some people think they are the most beautiful animals on Earth. Yes you can certainly remove the image from the WikiProject Gastropods page once the article is put together. Best, Invertzoo (talk) 16:35, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

I think they are indeed the most beautiful creatures on earth. Funny how sci-fi movies always depict life elsewhere as basically human-like, but with some small differences. How self-important people are. I guess they haven't looked in our own oceans lately. --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:16, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
