About Chinese anarchism
Hello Grnrchst, I would like to write something more about the trade unionism in China, a big part of it is driven by the anarchism during the 1920s, so I would like to know if you have any plans/suggestions about it. Many thanks in advance. ときさき くるみ not because they are easy, but because they are hard 07:46, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Tokisaki Kurumi: Hey! Yes, I can definitely recommend looking into the syndicalist movement in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hunan. Arif Dirlik dedicates a section to it in chapter 6 of Anarchism in the Chinese Revolution. Other than that, I'm not sure. Unfortunately it's been a while since I've researched Chinese anarchism so my knowledge is quite rusty. -- Grnrchst (talk) 10:39, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah I have read about it and as you know I could fluently read Chinese, there are indeed a number of Chinese sources about it. It will be strange for me if there is few sources in English though I do not find them. As for why I do not use Chinese sources, first this is English Wikipedia and second as you have written in the article that the CCP keeps regarding anarchists and syndicalists as ideological rivalries (even today). Anyway, if you have any further suggestions/sources, please let me know. --ときさき くるみ not because they are easy, but because they are hard 11:42, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi my friend. I hope you are fine. I have removed a lot of unreferenced information. The new page review is one of the last approval stages, so when I see a page like this with a large amount of unreferenced information, and no {{In use}}
tag to show that the page is undergoing a major build, I tend to err on the side of caution and remove the unreferenced information. The easiest solution is for you to add the tag to indicate the page is still under construction (if it is). This prevents me and other editors from editing the page until the process is complete and the tag is removed. Please assume good faith of me, as I do of you. By all means add the information again when you can add the references. I'm sure that it will become an awesome page in no time. Best wishes, BoyTheKingCanDance (talk) 16:45, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Introduction to contentious topics
You have recently edited a page related to Eastern Europe or the Balkans, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
- Not to imply any misconduct, but you seem to be genuinly unaware that the topic is highly contentious.--Ymblanter (talk) 14:11, 11 June 2023 (UTC)

A request
Hello! I just wanted to request that you archive your user talk page. While it may not be bothersome to you, many editors have slow connections, and having a very large talk page can hamper communication. If you need help, just check out the guide over at Help:Archiving a talk page. Thanks! ~~~~

Autopatrolled granted
Hi Grnrchst, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.
Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.
Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! – Joe (talk) 18:53, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

I need a little help
I see that you have added a reference to me in the article about The Grey Zone (2001) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Grey_Zone.
A few years ago I made the mistake of trying to create my own Wikipedia page, without knowing that it was, essentially, forbidden. It was, in fact, up for a while. Now it is not. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rich_Brownstein
I was honored as the keynote speaker in June 2022 at the 36th Annual Conference of the Association of Holocaust Organizations in Charlotte, and as a speaker at the Association of Jewish Libraries’ annual conference in Philadelphia, and at the Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies at Boston University on Yom HaShoah. I have presented virtually for numerous organizations, including the American Jewish University, B’nai B’rith International, Classrooms Without Borders, the International March of the Living, the National Library of Israel and UCLA. I also presented a webinar for Echoes & Reflections, the joint project of Yad Vashem, the Anti-Defamation League, and the USC Shoah Foundation. Many of my articles have been published in The Jerusalem Post. I was also honored by Israeli President Isaac Herzog at a visit to his office in recognition of my book and dedication to Holocaust education.
In addition to your reference, I have been noted in many Wikipedia pages by others: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lena_K%C3%BCchler-Silberman https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Butterfly https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Frank_Video-Tagebuch https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A0%D1%83%D0%B7%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%86%D0%BA%D0%B8,_%D0%A8%D1%82%D0%B5%D1%84%D0%B0%D0%BD https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romed_Wyder https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleepless_in_Seattle
And I have been cited in the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/27/movies/survivor-harry-haft.html
Some articles have also been written about me: https://www.jta.org/2021/10/01/culture/this-professor-has-seen-almost-every-holocaust-movie-ever-made-totaling-over-400-heres-what-he-learned https://medium.com/authority-magazine/social-impact-authors-how-why-rich-brownstein-is-helping-to-change-our-world-4a103ce1ecb0 https://deborahkalbbooks.blogspot.com/2021/11/q-with-rich-brownstein.html
And I have been on many podcasts. https://www.holocaustfilms.com/podcasts
Can you please help me resurrect my page? Hopefully I am now notable enough.
Thanks so much for your time.

- Hello, it's a pleasure to meet you! I very much admire your work and have found it very interesting and informative.
- Yes indeed, writing about yourself is frowned upon on Wikipedia, so I can understand why the article was deleted. It also appears to have been salted, which means administrator access is required to recreate it. I am not an administrator, nor do I have any desire to be, so this is outside of my capabilities as an editor. If I were to draft an article about you, it would have to go through the articles for creation process and require administrator approval. I would also need to double check the policy on article requests, because I try my best to avoid conflict of interest editing, so at the very least I would need to disclose that you asked me to do this.
- In any case, were this to be something I take on, it's not something I can do right now. Wikipedia-wise, my plate is overflowing with articles I'm working on and projects I'm helping run; and personally, I am currently in recovery from some health issues, so I'm trying my best (and probably failing) not to over-stress myself with Wikipedia work. I'll likely be taking a break over the next few weeks, so if I do decide to write this article, it won't be for at least a month or so.
- All the best to you. :) --Grnrchst (talk) 15:58, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello Grnchrst! What do you think about add some categories to that page:
- Most viewed women who were born before 1492 at all (time when middle ages started). It is wrong that we have category for 3rd millenium people but not for women from whole history, is not it?
- Most viewed biographies but by spectrum of category (aka Category:Jesus, Category,Joan of Arc, Category:Mary,Mother Of Jesus, Category:Newton, Category:Cleopatra etc.). We have most viewed categories at all on that page popular pages if you use ctrl+f but not specifically for biographies' categpries on that page, for all biographies what would be useful because of some have stronger case in categoey spectrum (for example Mary is mentioned as biggest disambig on Wikipedia:Wikipedia records but is not on popular pages)
- Category about visionaries and religious figures, for all biographies (a ka Britannica, you seen list of 100 women, where are religious figures than musicians, or wikimacropedia 2007 where are more religious fogures too, did not you?)
- Listing King Arthur next to Abraham but Hindu Deities next to animated cartoon characters is odd. Perhaps we should split that list beetwen fictional characters from franchises and mythical/ religous figures which are not considered biographies per se?
- Most viewed scientists (at least the top)
Any thoughts? Cheers Dawid2009 (talk) 07:57, 22 October 2023 (UTC)

Next one?
Howdo, I've been meaning to contact you about Lucy Parsons for a while - it went through a painful and unsuccesful GA nom so I don't have much interest any more but I do still think it could be a FA eventually. I would totally understand if you don't have time/energy for it but if you wanted to take a look please feel free. Also good luck with Nestor, looks like you are nearly done now - I've been quite busy with Phoolan Devi and that's also hopefully quite near the finish line now. The process is ultimately worth it but it sure can be exhausting :) Mujinga (talk) 11:41, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
- I might be willing to have a look at Lucy Parsons at a later date, I have too much on my plate at the moment. Sorry to hear that the GA nomination was a painful process, I understand that can be difficult to deal with. Thanks for the good luck, but honestly, I'm not sure I agree yet that the process is worth it. This review hasn't exactly given me a good opinion of the FAC process. Maybe that opinion will change, but damn it has felt frustrating almost from the beginning. --Grnrchst (talk) 12:52, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
- It sure hasn't been encouraging to watch, either. -- asilvering (talk) 14:35, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
- Ah that's shame to hear. I have
threetwo FAs and one FL - I was lucky on my first ones that everyone was supernice. Now I've got Phoolan Devi and it's going ok but it is quite hard progress; that's not really bothering me much because I was kind of expecting it I suppose. For me it's quite similar to when I'm writing an academic book chapter with someone and I get to the last week of edits and suddenly the nitpicks start to get really annoying :) But then it gets published and I'm (somewhat) happy again. I guess what I'm trying to say is you are nearly there Grnrchst so don't give up!! Perhaps next time we two or three can collaborate on something to share the load - that's more how I'd like my wikipedia editing to go. Cheers, Mujinga (talk) 20:07, 5 November 2023 (UTC)- A key difference being, of course, that you need book chapters for your career... It seems to me that getting articles up to FA is a case of diminishing returns, where the amount of work undertaken is no longer increasing the usefulness to the reader to a degree I find satisfying. I am happy to get called in to help with things, though. Even if they are for FAs. :P -- asilvering (talk) 20:19, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- Diminishing returns is right... I've just wasted the best part of my weekend, and will probably continue to waste time in the week going forward, on a wild goose chase for obscure information that I'm not even sure exists and that the average reader probably wouldn't care less about. All of this to satisfy the arcane codes of a state on the other side of the planet, where neither I nor the subject of the article have ever set foot. The only other option to this is to carry out a purge of the article, to make it objectively worse. This, combined with all the unwritten rules and project culture I've had to figure out from the start of this process, has left me wondering how much that wee gold star is really worth. -- Grnrchst (talk) 22:27, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah I can see what you both mean on the diminishing returns aspect but I think that's somewhat connected to expectations. Fitting to wikipedia requirements does mean jumping through some hoops on occasion, but if there is an overriding aim such as remedying systemic bias then that gives me the energy to do it. As a reductio ad absurdum, the whole wikipedia project can be seen as pointless since if we as a culture lose the ability to produce electricity and/or read hard drives then all the data is lost, yet that doesn't mean it's not worth doing.
- An FA can get on the front page and be read by many people, a GA is more of an internal process which depends a lot on the reviewer, but at least most of the time the article gets improved which is the reason I want to collaborate. By this logic, DYKs are useful as they also get stuff on the frontpage, but the internal process there can be so nitpicky I mostly gave up on it. Anyway I do think FA feedback is welcomed and the process should be less arcane. Mujinga (talk) 14:40, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
- I'm now on day four of chasing geese, and am no closer to catching any. Estoy cansada jefe... --Grnrchst (talk) 10:37, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Grnrchst is this for image permissions? -- asilvering (talk) 15:07, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Asilvering: Aye it's not going well. I've tried narrowing my search down to just the lead image (like if I can salvage just one, then maybe I can figure out the others), so I've been spending a lot of time just trying to find more info on one photograph. Even with this one, trying to figure out the details of who took it and when it was first published has been quite the task. Problem is, these images have been floating around for so long and are used so ubiquitously that it's almost impossible to narrow my search. So far I've not found a single copy that contains more information than when and where it was taken (not to mention who is in it). There's a copy of it in the IISH (in Senya Fleshin's collection) and apparently there's one in the Library of Congress, so I'm trying to find out if they have any more information. --Grnrchst (talk) 15:28, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Grnrchst Damn. I'm about to get on the phone and sort this out for some images for an academic publication. I know who made the originals (dead since the mid-15th century) and who took the photographs, and I have funding if I need to pay for them... and it's still a pain. I'm surprised you're not able to get at least some of the images through on the "everyone involved is necessarily dead" argument. I've tried to report actual permissions violations here before and basically been told "it's old enough, it's fine". (Not how this works, as today's phone call errand attests.) -- asilvering (talk) 15:37, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
- Victor Peters (1970) published a version with the background cut out, but doesn't say where it was sourced from. Alexandre Skirda (2004) also published a version with no background, apparently sourced from his own personal collection. Paul Avrich (1988) published the same no-background version, which was apparently sourced from the LoC, but I haven't been able to find it in their online archives. (And I can't ask any of them because they're all dead)
- Sean Patterson published one that does include the background, the same version that's on the article right now, from the IISH and "didn't encounter any copyright issues". Does a doctored background-less version of the photograph count for publication of this photograph? Or is it just the same background-ed version? Does entering a work into an archive count as "publication"? How can I tell it wasn't published in the US less than 30 days after original publication, do I need to search every single possible US publication that came out in that month just to prove a negative? Does any author that has ever published a photo have copyright over it, or do they have to claim that (and even if they do claim that, is it overwritten by earlier copyrights?)?
- I'm not exactly an expert in American copyright law, so I don't even know what criteria I still have to meet at this point. --Grnrchst (talk) 16:03, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
- Mine's been fun: the British Library's website is down (hacked), my phone won't call their phone (cursed?), another library is now closed (!) until 2025 (!!).
- Entering a work into an archive definitely does not count as publication, but if Patterson didn't have any problems, surely it's fine... ugh. -- asilvering (talk) 16:41, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Asilvering: As if to spite me, I have now found that the IISH carries no less than 8 versions of this same photograph.[1] Some have the background and others don't, some appear doctored, some have collectors credited and others don't, two were even printed on posters by a Ukrainian anarchist group and by someone called Jeffrey E. Bergholt. I feel like I'm running in circles at this point. This has no end, I know it doesn't. --Grnrchst (talk) 15:44, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
- Surely at this point you can simply show your work to the FA folks and that's enough? It's clear that this isn't a copyright violation anyone will come after the WMF for. -- asilvering (talk) 17:15, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

I opened a talk page earlier today concerning the conflicting reports concerning the status of MAREZ and its sovereignty and would like more eyes on it to be sure that I am not mistaken in my take on the matter, detailed here -> Talk:Rebel Zapatista Autonomous Municipalities.
Thanks a ton, and take care!

Promotion of Nestor Makhno
- Congratulations! Sorry about the images—you're not alone in wanting to bash your head in; I've also found that articles on non-Western topics are harder, but you've got the additional problem of annoying dates. The only thing more irritating than the image reviews is that I actually understand the reasoning behind them. Ah well, perhaps you'll find evidence these photos were all published in 1927, and you can add them all back. Let's hope. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 01:26, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- I'll add my congrats! Mujinga (talk) 09:38, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Mujinga: Cheers for the congrats pal. Wishing you the best for your FAC review as well. :) --Grnrchst (talk) 22:35, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
- @AirshipJungleman29: Thanks for the congrats. And aye, it's a shame it's so inherently limiting to non-western topics. I just went through my GAs and it seems like only one of them would meet FAC standards on images; the subject is an Italian that had close links with the US and was in the American news at the time, so photo information is comparatively easier to find. I'll keep looking for info on the Makhno images, but I'm not holding out any hope that it'll be able to get them up to American standards. --Grnrchst (talk) 22:29, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

VA vote counting at Remove several modestly notable classic rock bands
If you explicitly oppose an element of set nomination, does it count as a weak oppose to everything else. For several bands, I see 4 explicit supports no explicit opposes. Why are they being kept?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:40, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
- If this is a correct counting is there a renomination protocol? I.e., does there have to be a waiting time?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:42, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
- There were eight votes. Only four explicit supports doesn't count as more than 55% support. I'd recommend making another nomination that doesn't lump so many individual bands together, and without the ones that people opposed. --Grnrchst (talk) 19:43, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
- I must agree with TonyTheTiger. The opposes towards specific entries shouldn't count towards the overall oppose, you assume they are neutral on the matter. The Blue Rider 22:55, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
- Feel free to undo/redo the discussion closure then. --Grnrchst (talk) 23:03, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

- Hi, you seem to still be under this misapprehension. Let me just chime in with what the others said. If you don't vote on the specific proposal at hand, then for the purposes of vote-counting you're not voting on that specific proposal at all. That's how the rules at all VA levels have always been interpreted in my experience. It's best to just say in your close, for this example, "removal passes 5–0, no consensus on addition 2–0". - Hello Grnrchst, we need experienced volunteers.
- New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
- Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.
- Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision (if it looks daunting, don't worry, it basically boils down to checking CSD, notability, and title). If this looks like something that you can do, please consider joining us.
- If you would like to join the project and help out, please see the granting conditions. You can apply for the user-right HERE.
- If you have questions, please feel free to drop a message at the reviewer's discussion board.
