Matthew Smith

Hi there, I suggest you move the page Matthew Smith (footballer to Matthew Smith (footballer). The last bracket it currently cut-off. You can do this by simply clicking 'Move' button beside the history and edit options at the top of the page. Regards, 212.120.229.103 15:31, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Stats

Hey. Good work with updating stats on footballers' infoboxes, but you need to update the field entitled "pcupdate". This is needed to be updated as it gives the date of the update, so everyone knows the stats are actually up to date. To do this, type five tildes (~) into the "pcupdate" field, and the date of the update will be given. Thanks, Mattythewhite 12:28, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

George Johnston

Hi, spotted your new George Johnston (footballer) article and added a bit to it. Good things to do when you write a new article are to add it to the Football project's list of new articles HERE, and to add Footy project and Biography project banners to its talk page, like I did for Mr Johnston's. Also where appropriate, as it was in this case, add him to the relevant disambiguation page, at George Johnston. All this helps to make more people aware of what articles are out there and to find the one they're looking for. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 10:26, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

The positions that you undid for Aaron Ramsey are areas where he has been played by both Dave Jones and Arsene Wenger, so sto being a snub changing other people's edits. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Supergunner08 (talkcontribs) 12:54, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Sidney Evans

You are correct, the guidelines do say that. However, from what I have read in the article, Sidney Evans was a bit-part player at Cardiff during their time in the First Division. I tend to reserve Mid-Importance for players who played regularly in a top-level league, rather than someone who made the odd appearance every so often. – PeeJay 16:08, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Ken Hollyman

His date of birth is inconsistent in the article. As the sole editor of the article, do you know which is the correct date? September 16, 1922 or November 18, 1922? Thanks. MahangaTalk 09:34, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, thanks for that, I checked my ref and you are correct, he made 104 league appearances and 112 in total for Villa. I have updated the list and his article. It must have slipped through the net somehow. Thanks for letting me know. Regards, Woody (talk) 15:43, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I replied on my talk page - do you want to follow the thread there? Cheers Eldumpo (talk) 21:05, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Alan Davies

I was actually using the figures from "The Official Manchester United Illustrated Encyclopedia", but the rest of my sources do show that he made 13 appearances for Wales, so I think I'd better change that back! – PeeJay 22:39, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

The Wales football list

Thanks for the numerous players you'ved added. I notice you've got to the early 80s and I was wondering if you're still using the RSSSF line-ups as your source, and whether you have another for players earlier than that. Regards. Eldumpo (talk) 21:04, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Glad to hear you've got access to a paper source that allows you to add names from before the 1980s. Wales played Kuwait twice in September 1977. J Phillips, Edwards and Evans all played in the 2nd of the 2 games (20th). Eldumpo (talk) 08:55, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Owain Tudur Jones

My books list him under T. As he is shown as "Tudor Jones" on the Norwich City squad template, I assumed that was his surname. The BBC lists him as "Tudor-Jones" on match reports as do several other websites. Cheers. Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 19:13, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

How to treat 'Ireland' on Welsh list

DK and I had some discussions re how to treat the wording of 'Ireland' (primarily between the wars) and had different views (see [1]). What are your thoughts? Regards Eldumpo (talk) 21:50, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Gareth Davies (footballer born 1949)

Should the above be on the list as Gareth Davis - my Rothmans source has him without the 'e' and he is a redlink at [2] without. Regards. Eldumpo (talk) 11:38, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for checking and changing, though I have shortened his redlink as there seem to be no others on wiki. Eldumpo (talk) 21:16, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
I hate to disagree with you guys on this, but both my reference books list him as "Davies" as does the summary of the England match in which he played.[3]. The "Who's Who of Welsh International Soccer Players" (incidentally co-authored by Gareth M. Davies) says "His surname is given as "Davis" in most reference books". www.allfootballers.com (Michael Joyce's website) gives his name as "Davis" which agrees with Rothmans.

His date of birth is also different: both books have 11 August 1949, whereas you have 11 July (which is what www.allfootballers.com says). As at this stage, we have different equally reliable sources saying different things, I have added a note to the list explaining the differences. --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 06:43, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Gary Stevens (footballer born 1954)

Hi Kosack, have you got any evidence from any Cardiff books that Stevens was a player/manager at Knighton Town F.C.? Thanks Eldumpo (talk) 19:17, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 17:42, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Re:Acton Park

Hello, thanx for your question. The page Scotland national football team 1872–1899 results also lists Acton Park as the ground for Wales' first home match against Scotland. Yet The History of the Welsh Cup by Ian Garland states that, although it staged the first Welsh Cup final it hasn't staged a major football game since. I think you are right, that it must be the Racecourse and not Acton Park that was used as the home ground. I'm gald that someone is checking my work, any help is much welcomed. Shamrock Rovers

Is "Shamrock Rovers" singular or plural? --Exorcist Z (talk) 17:11, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. In effect the article says "Shamrock Rovers are" while for example this article says "Bohemian is". It means "Shamrock Rovers" is/are plural, I think. In Italy all people (on television, too) appoint it/them with a singular article... Your confirmation means that all verbs, articles and pronouns on it:wiki should be change... :S --Exorcist Z (talk) 19:23, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Removing my edits to the "Stuart Fleetwood" Article

I see you've removed the changes I made to the article on Stuart Fleetwood on 08:04, 12 August 2010. The reason you cited was lack of sources for what I presume is the fact I added that Fleetwood used to be called "Mac" in his childhood, but how do you expect me to source something like a childhood nickname? It's purely word of mouth, you can't reasonably expect people to keep some sort of logbook of nicknames and childhood in-jokes for future reference. I understand how that could have been mistaken for vandalism, but I still don't think it's criteria for deletion. Could you reconsider on this? Thanks in advance. Re Beadles

Hello! Nice to see someone got some use out of the admittedly half a job I did on that article. It turns out I actually made a mistake for 2 of the 3 seasons he finished top scorer. I've just had a quick look in the book again and it tallies up with both of the sources you have listed. I've updated the list of seasons with the correct information with now also tallies up with the information you now have on the Beadles article and if you need you can cite the book and the pages as the source too. If you find yourself on any other war time or even football league players who've played for Southport and need a help just give me a shout and i'll look it up in the book for you. Hal Robson-Kanu

I don't think you needed to twice revert the editor sourcing his goal to Twitter. It was easily verifiable, e.g. http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/euro2016/wales-2-slovakia-1-gareth-bale-and-hal-robson-kanu-earn-euro-2016-win-a3269356.html. Replacing the tweet with a better source would have been better, I had already left them a welcome notice about sourcing and this time they linked to a US newspaper's round-up of Euro 2016. Seasons FL

Hello. I wouldn't expect the absence of sources for a new team's early years in a local league to cause a problem. I'm mildly surprised the South Wales Amateur League is so difficult to find tables for, but it obviously is: none of the usual online sources seem to carry it. Someone might ask whether the Definitives book (here) or a history book e.g. this one give Cardiff's record in those leagues. It's a long time since I've done much at FLC, either nominating or commenting (I'm afraid I got a bit disillusioned with the process) so I don't know how fussy reviewers are these days, but if there's anything you think I might be able to help with, please feel free to ask. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:20, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

Give me a couple of days, I'll have a look at it. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 20:52, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

The basics are there. The prose could do with a bit of TLC, as you suggested it might, but the basic structure is OK, the worst of the tedious stuff (P/W/D/L/etc and results in major cups) is in the table, and it's referenced. The difference between a decent, functional, usable, season list - which this one is - and a featured one is largely down to a) completeness and b) presentation. It might be an idea to look at the more up-to-date season lists - not sure there's been an FLC for a British club since my Brighton one five years ago, although I've tried to keep it current, and the Watford and York City ones are good. The Man Utd one is visually horrendous at the recent end, and they've got away with omitting some minor cups, which is a bit naughty, but the mechanics of the table formatting is OK.

Some specifics:

  • Sorting: some of the columns don't sort as they should. For instance, Pos and Goals are sorting alphabetically rather than numerically. You can force numeric sorting by including data-sort-type="number" in the column header, so it reads !scope="col" data-sort-type="number"|Goals
  • Convention is that names sort by surname rather than given name: use {{sortname}} (the template page might say it's deprecated, but discussion on the talk page rather implies it isn't unless and until a better alternative can be produced for people who actually have to use the thing)
  • and that rounds of competitions should sort logically, as W, RU, SF, ... R2, R1, QR5 ...
  • and that Division should also sort logically, with old Div 1/Prem followed by old Div 2/new Div 1/Champ, followed by Div 3S/old Div 3/new Div 2/League 1, ..., followed by non-league divisions.
  • The cells in the Season column are the row headers, so need a scope="row"
  • Cup columns: obviously the FA Cup, League Cup and Welsh Cups need columns of their own, but I think everything else should go into an "Other" double column, with competition name in the first column and result in the second, as in the Brighton/Watford examples. At the moment, the only "other" competitions listed are the FLTrophy and CWC, but Cardiff also played in several others (Anglo-Italian Cup, FA Charity Shield, etc) that need to be in there. Bear in mind that including the other comps will have a knock-on effect on the top goalscorers; if you can source goals in all comps, or all comps apart from the Welsh Cup, then that would be best, otherwise go to goals in domestic league only.
  • Linking: this is tedious, but convention is to link the entries in the Pos column to the season article for the relevant league, and likewise for the FA Cup, League Cup, and Other/Result columns where such season articles exist (mostly they do, unfortunately).
  • Key: the abbreviations for rounds and divisions should match those actually used in the table. If you're keeping the red and green colours in the position column, they'll need to appear in the colour key and have a symbol (for accessibility, as an alternative to the colour).
  • Wartime: there's no need for the tiny font in the wartime rows, and the years covered should appear in the row header like all the normal seasons do (otherwise that column can't sort back into its initial order). The FA Cup resumed in 1945–46, so that season ought to appear, and convention is also to include the abandoned 1939–40 Football League season, italicised.
  • Try and make sure everything that needs sourcing is clearly ref'd to reliable sources, and format the references consistently.

I don't think the gap between now and being ready to submit to FLC is as daunting as these comments might make it look. Fair amount of repetitive boring stuff, but there's no deadline. Hope this hasn't put you off. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:46, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Try abbreviating the league divisions: South 2 or Southern 2, Division 3S, Champ, Prem or Premier are clear enough and should fix it. You can set a width, but it'll just make a different column equally cramped. Might be worth having a look at MOS:TABLE, and in particular the help pages linked from its See also section. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:14, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
I got it wrong about setting a width. Abbreviating the divisions is necessary, but having had a proper look at some of the other seasons lists, including my "own", they do have widths set on most columns, using percentages. I did wonder why reducing the natural width of your division column had just made the Welsh Cup column really wide and made no real difference to the Other comps... I have vague memories of experimenting with values that suited my screen and assuming someone would tell me if it made the table unusable on other screen sizes.
As to the Other competitions, they're usually split into separate Competition and Result columns, so that the results can be sorted separately. Makes it easier for the reader to see all the wins together. That was probably me not expressing myself clearly above.
The thefa.com source in the FA Cup column header will confirm that Cardiff did enter those FA Cup editions during their SL days.
There's still some work to do with adding various "other" competitions, and making sure everything's clearly sourced, but it's getting there. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:58, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
1913–14 FA Cup lost 2-0 to Swansea in the 4th qual round. Apparently, copyright considerations restrict FCHD to carrying only the later rounds of each season's FA Cup. Cardiff must have entered the Third Division South Cup, but they do seem to have avoided the others. The sorting thing shouldn't be an issue. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:57, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Football League Division Three South Cup Summary - Contents. Click on individual seasons. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:54, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Maybe it comes down to whether Cardiff treated the Welsh Cup as a first-team competition throughout their participation in it or not. If they didn't, then leave the goals out. If they did, then consistency with other sources isn't a problem and it might be better for completeness to include them. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 10:40, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Cardiff City record attendance

Hi Kosack - there are quite a few links referencing this attendance. If true, and it certainly seems to be, it does seem rather odd that Cardiff City's website doesn't mention it but rather the Arsenal attendance instead.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Wales_derby http://www.11v11.com/matches/cardiff-city-v-swansea-town-27-august-1949-105073/

The Cardiff - Swansea attendance is also referenced on the enfa.co.uk website, but you have to be a paying member to view attendance figures. Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.157.15.247 (talk) 16:47, 24 November 2016 (UTC)

John Clark

I'm not; I'm "undoing" you so you get a notification so you see I've made the edit, and it saves me having to write you a message explaining (which, of course, is now futile). PS please can you add a page number for the reference you added? Those things tend to be helpful when verifying information. Ta. GiantSnowman 10:32, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

If a player plays in a league, they should be added to the category. You did one but not the other. And a range of page numbers is fine. GiantSnowman 11:09, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
My method = you see that I have added the category, and as an intelligent editor go "oh yes I need to add the category when I make edits like that, I shall do so in future." Saves me making an edit and writing on your talk page to ask you add the category, which you might also see as patronising. Again, please add the page numbers, the reference as it stands it not ideal. GiantSnowman 11:21, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Yes I remember it. Mkhitaryan only didn't play because he had an injury at the time. But that doesn't seem to be a criteria, because lots of players won trophies without playing. Saying he wasn't credited with the cup because he didn't play is original research, whereas the databases credit him with the cup so that's what is put. He is part of the team photo after they won the cup too. --Harlowan (talk) 23:08, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

The Ronaldo discussion doesn't really help your position, because they said and seem to conclude with the same thing I'm saying (go with what sources say) and Ronaldo currently has the 2016 cup listed on his article. Someone also pointed out Ronaldo wasn't present at the stadium, but Mkhitaryan was. Pepe Reina didn't play at all in the 2012 Euro but still is credited, so it's not impossible. Soccerway is reliable though and is currently cited. Footballdatabase.eu gives Mkhitaryan two German Supercups as well. Not sure of the reliability of it, but there seems to be a clear consensus. Unless you have a source that says Mkhitaryan wasn't credited, please leave it be. --Harlowan (talk) 02:05, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
Okay I see it heavily debated, but for the time being the second Supercup should be listed because that's what the already cited source says. --Harlowan (talk) 17:45, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Sanford School edits

Thank you for the information regarding my edits of the sanford school wikipedia page, it was very helpful. The main reason for making such edits was in an effort to make the page ultimately more concise and to relieve it of unnecessary information. I have been working on making the edits completely neutral as per the neutrality policy, and would like to propose edits be made so that the page more accurately covers what the school is today. I would be happy to fill out an edit template in order to help with this process.Rooseveltt (talk) 14:35, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Football substitute appearances

There appears to be a degree of inconsistency across Wikipedia as to whether players' substitute appearances for a club are included in the headline total, hence why I have erred on the side of caution in the past by not including them. Going forward I will include both full and substitute league caps in Sutton players' appearances total. It would be helpful if you could direct me to a page or policy which confirms that this should be the case for all football players.

DYK for Albert Barnett

On 23 February 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Albert Barnett, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the association footballer Albert Barnett was one of five brothers who played for Altrincham F.C.? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Albert Barnett. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Albert Barnett), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Lewandowski

You should look on Polish Wikipedia. Even source (nr. 4) confirms this change. He played for Delta only few times. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.68.102.170 (talk) 10:20, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Lewandowski

I have a little question. Do you know Polish language? Because if you don't, you have no idea about this article sources. For several years information about Lewy's youth career are distorted. Source number 4 clearly indicates:

Mały Robert miał grać w Legii, ale w klubie z Łazienkowskiej akurat nie było jego rocznika. Tata zapisał go więc do Varsovii - międzyszkolnego ośrodka sportowego, którego obiekt, czyli niewymiarowe, zaniedbane boisko z obskurnymi szatniami, leży pod drugiej stronie stadionu Polonii.

I don't want to translate all text, but believe me - its confirmed my changes. So please don't stop reverting these changes. Many thanks.

Facebook Football Awards

The members of the Team of the Year and other Facebook Football Awards all got trophies and shields. And these awards were given a lot of hype, with many major news sources covering them. You can look it up if you like. KnavishGlobe786 (talk) 15:09, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Jackie French

As historian for Tunbridge Wells FC i had initially identified Jackie French as having joined the club on further investigation i believe this to be wrong and it fact the player in question was Jim French who joined the club from Gillingham.

Rami Malek

Hello Kosack. I did indeed make changes to the Rami Malek page. I was unaware that I should provide an explanation. On Rami's page, it describes him as an Egyptian-American Coptic actor. Last I checked, people on Wikipedia are not described by what faith they follow, but rather by their nationality, especially actors/actresses. I'm still not sure why it is necessary that in the case of Rami Malek, its important to state his faith in the first descriptive phrase on his page (and then mention it several other times in the article). There is an "Early Life" section where his faith can be stated. I don't see why Rami Malek in particular has his religion mentioned as a first and main thing. Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.66.183.98 (talk) 02:18, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

Isco

Hello, I will explain why I added Malaga to Benalmadena. 1st. Malaga (city and province) is quite well known in Britain and even overseas (been living in the States). I think it will be very helpful to locate Benalmadena in the map. 2nd. There's no hospital in Benalmadena where he could possibly be born. I live there so I know it for sure. He was born in Malaga hospital (15 miles away). I hope that it's ok for you if I added again. Muchas gracias.

Actually you are right, I looked into it a bit more and the playoffs are actually playoffs, not just the second phase of the season (bottom team in the table doesn't play in playoffs). There's 16 teams in the league and they all play 30 games before the playoffs, so that would end the league season. I will revert. TonyStarks (talk) 07:44, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
