WikiCup 2015 March newsletter
That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.
In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Bumblebee, a level-4 vital article, to Good Article;
- AHeneen (submissions) worked-up the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 article, also to Good Article status;
- Rodw (submissions) developed an extremely timely article to Good Article, taking Magna Carta there some 800 years after it was first sealed;
- And last but not least, Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points) worked up a number of Featured Pictures during round 1, including the 1948 one Deutsche Mark (pictured right), receiving the maximum bonus due to the number of Wikis that the related article appears in.
You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Your edits on Lalji Singh
Hello! About your recent edits on Lalji Singh, while I understand that you wanted to "streamline" the article by removing the extra spaces, there is no reason to remove all the |website= | from the references since those are there to prevent link rot as per WP:MOS. Since you made all the edits in one edit I'll have to revert the entire edit. Best, w.carter-Talk 14:16, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
- @W.carter: I don't think that the use of
|website=
solves link rot. I have replied at [[1]]. Thanks.--Skr15081997 (talk) 14:21, 3 March 2015 (UTC)- No, it does not solve it but it makes it easier to track down, and since the parameter is included in the most common assortment of parameters that should be used, I think that we should leave it there. Best, w.carter-Talk 14:25, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
- @W.carter: If you are so much concerned about linkrot then you should use
|archiveurl
and|archivedate
. Providing a bare url in the|website=
field isn't an aesthetic solution to the problem. I still can't understand why my edit was reverted.--Skr15081997 (talk) 14:40, 3 March 2015 (UTC)- @Skr15081997: also @Educationtemple: Now, this is really embarrassing. I acted too quickly. You used a formatting so sophisticated with a parameter I was not fully acquainted with. I have now gone thru it more carefully, and learned something in the process. I will revert my reversion and hope that you accept my apology, for jumping to conclusions. Best, w.carter-Talk 14:48, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 May newsletter
The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.
Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.
- Coemgenus (submissions) was one of several users who worked on improving Ulysses S. Grant. Remember, you do not need to work on an article on your own - as long as each person has completed significant work on the article during 2015, multiple competitors can claim the same article.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) took Dragonfly to Good Article for a 3x bonus - and if that wasn't enough, they also took Damselfly there as well for a 2x bonus.
- LeftAire (submissions) worked up Alexander Hamilton to Good Article for the maximum bonus. Hamilton was one of the founding fathers of the United States and is a level 4 vital article.
The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs · email), Miyagawa (talk · contribs · email) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) 17:00, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi Skr15081997!
Thanks for the welcome message. I would love additional helping updating pages. I was mostly looking to update pages for accuracy, and correcting some sources that were missing or incorrect. Nothing too major, but if you would be able to help me I would greatly appreciate it.

- Hi Skr15081997, Here are two additons/changes we wanted to make to the page for Janice Min, who is the Chief Creative Officer of The Hollywood Reporter.
Under the section heading "The Hollywood Reporter" we wanted to add the following sentence/quote after the line that ends ".... Luminary Award for Career Achievement in 2012.". The line we want to add should read, "Four years after re-launch The Washington Post writes (May 2014) “The Hollywood Reporter...has emerged as both buzzy and serious under the leadership of Janice Min...” [1]
Underneath that, we wanted to update the number of unique visitors in the sentence that reads, "... boosted THR.com's unique visitors to nearly 12 million as of November 2012." The new line should read, "Min's revival of the magazine, which included an expanded breaking news web operation and the introduction of lifestyle features, boosted THR.com's unique visitors to over 17 million as of August 2014." [2]
Please let me know if these changes are acceptable. Thanks!
THRMRKTG10 (talk) 15:37, 4 June 2015 (UTC)
- Done with some changes.--Skr15081997 (talk) 05:58, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. WikiCup 2015 September newsletter
The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.
In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.
The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:
- Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
- Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
- Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
- West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
- Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
- Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
- Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.
The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.
Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Removal of 'Controversies' Section on the page of City Montessori School
This is with regard to your edits in the Controversies section, against my request for deletion of the 'Controversies' section as it wrongfully maligns the reputation of this well-known, world's largest school as per the [2] Guinness Book of Records.
I wish to present some references which present the facts:
1. With reference to the allegation that CMS founder Dr Jagdish Gandhi stopped a Pakistani school from participating in 2014 International Students' Cricket Premier League, it may be noted that during that time, tensions were running high between India and Pakistan because of the beheading of some Indian soldiers at the India-Pakistan border. Due to the security concerns prevailing during that period, especially when anti-Pakistan sentiment was high, the school management was not sure if it was the right time for Pakistani children to come to India. Later, it was found that the student team from Pakistan was also denied visas by the Indian Embassy to travel to India. CMS is the only school in the world ever to receive the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education (in 2002) for its work to unite warring countries in order to secure a safe future for the children the world over. As well as its pen friends program (“Aao Dosti Karein”) with children in Pakistani schools, CMS has invited, welcomed and hosted a large number of delegations from Pakistani schools over the years.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
2. The allegation about the school hiking the fee gives a partial and imbalanced picture. The full press release at 'New academic session, new fee structure' of The Times of India says, "With 20 branches, City Montessori School (CMS) has hiked the nursery, Montessori and kindergarten (KG) fees by 16% compared to last year. The school management has increased the fee for other classes by less than 10%. " The fact about the school increasing the fee only by less than 10% (8% to be more accurate) has been hidden from the material on the ‘Controversies’ page. CMS is probably the only school which is so transparent about its fee structure that it publishes a dossier every year clearly stating the new fee for various classes for the session. No other school probably publishes the fee dossier for the benefit of its parents and the public.
3. With regard to CMS refusing admission to 13 poor children under the RTE Act (Right to Education Act) and the contempt notice by the Allahabad High Court in September, 2015, the fact is that the school had approached the Supreme Court of India to appeal against the decision of the Allahabad High Court, and to make such an appeal for a ‘stay’ against a lower court’s order is legal under Indian law. The school itself had approached the High Court first against the directive of the Basic Education Officer in April 2015 to admit 31 poor children as that directive was not in accordance with the legal state rules for the implementation of RTE Act. It is not unlawful anywhere in the world to approach the courts against the directive which are not found in accordance with law. Once the Supreme Court's directive came, the school immediately admitted the said 13 children the very next day, as is evident from the press release here.[9] The matter is still sub-judice before the Supreme Court with the last order of the court saying that the 13 schools should be admitted forthwith as an interim measure so that their education does not suffer, however, should there be found vacancies in other nearer schools in the vicinity of the residences of the children (as claimed by the appellant), the Supreme Court may order the shifting of these children to those nearby schools. 4. With regard to the matter of slapping of a student by a CMS teacher causing him to bleed from one ear and a subsequent filing of a police complaint against him, the fact is, a thorough enquiry was conducted by the CMS management in the case and it was found that though the teacher had indeed slapped the student. While CMS does not condone the action of the teacher the behavior of the student (snatching the lunch-box of a much younger student and throwing it) leaves much to be desired. The student later apologized to the teacher for his behaviour and the parents withdrew the police case against the teacher. The teacher in question also submitted his clarification and an apology. The school has a zero-tolerance policy towards corporal punishment and this is strictly enforced.
5. Regarding the case of a student of CMS Mahanagar Campus I committing suicide allegedly due to harassment from his school principal, the case is still sub-judice. No judgement has been delivered and the culpability of the Principal has not been established. She must be held to be innocent until proven guilty, as per Wikipedia rule which says, "A person accused of a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty and convicted by a court of law. For relatively unknown people, editors must seriously consider not including material in any article suggesting that the person has committed, or is accused of committing, a crime unless a conviction is secured.[6] If different judicial proceedings result in seemingly contradictory judgements that do not override each other,[7] refrain from using pithy descriptors or absolutes and instead use more explanatory information."
I sincerely hope the above clarifications are sufficient to establish that the 'Controversies' section has been inserted with the intent to malign the reputation of a world-renowned school. Therefore, it is my earnest request to kindly remove the section from the page of 'City Montessori School' and oblige. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rishi.khanna05 (talk • contribs) 06:25, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hello Skr15081997,
