DYK

Hi Flibirigit. I saw you poke your head in at DYK here and wanted to drop by and leave you a note. In case you don't already know, DYK is a part of the Main Page that is dedicated to showcasing primary new articles (though those expanded 5 times or improved to Good Article status also qualify). I was doing new page patrol and stumbled across your article. It easily met the DYK criteria so I nominated it to run on the main page (any editor can do so). I hope you don't mind and would be happy to answer any questions you might have as I'm fairly heavily involved in the DYK project. Best, Mifter (talk) 05:12, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

I don't mind at all. I just haven't had any article considered in the 12 years or so I have been on Wikipedia. Flibirigit (talk) 05:16, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

Preps 1 and 2

Wow, you're busy! I moved the 9th hook out of Prep 1. Just wanted to mention that you should try to vary the subject matter between heavy and light hooks. You had three war/murder hooks in Prep 1. BTW there are a ton of Holocaust hooks on the Approved page; these should not be running every day. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 13:32, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

It's been a slow work week in Canada due to the American Thanksgiving. I have more times on my hands than anticipated. I will try not to be too morbid in future prep sets! Flibirigit (talk) 13:35, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

Bruce Dowbiggin DYK

Regarding the DYK comments and concerns: I am still looking for an article that explicitly says "pensions" and "Gemini" in the same sentence. It's odd how hard it is to find. Now, regarding Tanya Dubnicoff. I found an article titled "Pedal to the medal: warning to Olympic cyclists. Tanya Dubnicoff is more than over the coaching scandal and the Atlanta Games. She's pumped, she's psyched and really in the zone" which was written by Dowbiggin in 2000 for Elm Street. This resource will likely explain her entire scenario and connection to Dowbiggin. Would you be able to see if you can access this? I don't think I can on my end. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 02:34, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

I reworded the sentence about Dubnicoff in Dowbiggin's article as per the cited source. I don't think anything else is needed for that case. I wouldn't lose to much sleep trying to specifically find those words together. It would be simpler to tweak to hook according to what is written. Flibirigit (talk) 03:02, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
Okay. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 03:05, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
I know you want to avoid specifics for BLP issues so I thought of some alternate hooks:
Alts: DYK that two time Gemini Award winning sports broadcaster Bruce Dowbiggin was one of the first editors of the University of Toronto student newspaper, The Medium? [1]
DYK that besides journalism, two time Gemini Award winning sports broadcaster Bruce Dowbiggin has written nine books? HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 03:28, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for your review of the Hardwick and Woodbury Railroad article. A few questions: You have flagged a number of passages that contain terms like "apparently" or "unsurprisingly", asking "to whom". These are according to the works cited at the end of the passage. The authors of those works are not such luminaries that I would feel comfortable in saying "as observed by Wood" or "according to Dow". These are people whose work appears (to me) to be dominated by these specific topics (I didn't know who Elizabeth Dow was until researching this article, for example). How would you suggest these be handled? --Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 15:25, 29 December 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Drew Van Horn

Thanks for "rescuing" my DYK nomination of Drew Van Horn, but after my interaction with BorgQueen and Vanamonde, why bother? Vanamonde stated, "I'm going to nominate the second article (GNPEC) for deletion, and the first requires substantially better sourcing." The Van Horn article referenced 15 sources; one was his bio from Young Harris where he is currently president, and the other was his resume. I agree that his resume was not a good source, but there are 13 other references. What is "substantially better sourcing"? I stopped contributing to Wiki ten years ago because of elitist, highbrow administrators who critiqued contributions as if they were teaching a graduate level writing class. It seems like nothing has changed. Mgrē@sŏn (Talk) 21:13, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

DYK etiquette and rules

Hi Flibirigit, your statement that you "volunteer[ed] two QPQ credits for one nomination, to help reduce the backlog of nominations without reviews" on Did you know nominations/Joe Wirkkunen is what inspired me to do my first review, even though I hadn't needed to do one yet (my second DYKN is still only waiting to be reviewed). But only after going through it I realized, as you pointed out, that by making a suggestion and not sticking to just reviewing it, I had unknowingly set it up such that someone else needed to come in approve my suggestion. That definitely wasn't my intention, though I can see why with the value of hindsight. I had assumed that by simply rearranging, which to me seemed like the obvious solution, I wouldn't have become involved.

My question is: in the future, if there is a DYKN that I'm going to review, is it best to simply just stick to reviewing and allow others to make suggestions? Is that the appropriate etiquette? I'm asking because you seem quite familiar with the process and I'm eager to help with any backlog. I had waited to ask until someone else approved the aforementioned DYKN, to avoid the idea that we were further colluding outside of the appropriate project space. Thanks in advance, Bobby Cohn (talk) 20:49, 23 September 2024 (UTC)

Reviewers are welcome to sit back and let others suggest hooks, or become involved. Either is acceptable since we're all trying to help. WT:DYK is always a great place to ask questions without judgment. Flibirigit (talk) 21:35, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
