DYK for Protestant Film Commission
On 2 June 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Protestant Film Commission, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Protestant Film Commission was founded partly in response to the sympathetic portrayal of Catholics in Hollywood films of the 1940s, while Protestants were played for laughs? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Protestant Film Commission. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Protestant Film Commission), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

DYK reviews in progress
Yoninah,
Here are a few reviews that you either started or had issues with the proposed hook. Can you please take a look at them? If there are any that you'd prefer not to return to, let me know and I'll call for a new reviewer.
- Template:Did you know nominations/Eight Hungarian Folksongs: in your initial review, you found the hook boring. Does ALT1 work for you? (ALT2 isn't in the article.) Done Approved. Yoninah (talk) 20:19, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
- Template:Did you know nominations/Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on domestic violence: you did the initial review and found some close paraphrasing. Has it and the other issues been dealt with? Done One more outstanding issue noted. Yoninah (talk) 20:19, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
- Template:Did you know nominations/O sacrum convivium!: you did the initial review; can you see whether it is ready yet? Done Still no page numbers. Yoninah (talk) 20:19, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
- Template:Did you know nominations/Galcerán Bridge: this is one where you weren't happy with the proposed hook. Can you please see whether the new one works well enough for you? Done Approved. Yoninah (talk) 20:19, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Controversial requested move of Jews

Yabu Meizan image caption
Sorry for bothering you again, and since the hook has already been promoted to a prep area I realise it might be too late to make a change. It occurs to me that it's the norm for image captions in DYK to make clear which hook or article they relate to, and "Painted and gilded bowl, c. 1910" doesn't. It was thoughtless on my part to just copy the caption from the article rather than adapting it. Is it possible to get it changed to "Painted and gilded bowl by Yabu Meizan" ? I hope you can help, but no worries if not. MartinPoulter (talk) 12:17, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
- @MartinPoulter: someone else took care of it. Yoninah (talk) 20:20, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi Yoninah, is there anything you can please do to clean up all the blatant inaccuracies in this abomination: Superstition in Judaism. Thanks so much, IZAK (talk) 22:51, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
- @IZAK: right from the lead, I can see this is a bear of a topic. IMO the article should be blown up and started again. Using the word "superstition" is an immediate trigger for "silly hokum". There is certainly an element of "evil eye" and "evil spirits" in Judaism, but it needs to be presented in a scholarly way. Citing the Jewish News of Northern California right off the top does not yield the most balanced presentation. But I really don't have time or inclination to wade into this. DYK for James Dunn (actor)
On 11 June 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article James Dunn (actor), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that five years after the major film studios branded him "unemployable", James Dunn (pictured) was cast as the dreamy alcoholic father in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and won an Academy Award? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/James Dunn (actor). Hi again, any chance you would want to take on The Exodus article by fixing it up from a Jewish scholarly perspective, especially correcting the sheer nonsense in The Exodus#Origins and historicity section? Thanks again, IZAK (talk) 01:54, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
Yoninah, an ALT4 has been proposed. Please see whether you think it is sufficiently interesting. (I think it's better than what's come before.) Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:50, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

DYK for I Still Dream About You
On 13 June 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article I Still Dream About You, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Fannie Flagg set her 2010 comedy-mystery novel I Still Dream About You in Birmingham, Alabama, because she wanted "to write a Valentine to my hometown"? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, I Still Dream About You), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Expansion of Queue page list of upcoming queues to always include all the preps as well as all the queues
Yoninah, I'd appreciate it if you would take a look at User:BlueMoonset/sandbox2, which is my proposed update to the queue update times list to always include preps.
As you can see, when queues are empty, it includes links to both the queue and the equivalent prep in that entry, since the prep will be promoted to that queue. All seven queues and all seven preps will appear, but it could take anywhere from seven lines (if all queues are empty) to fourteen lines (if all queues and preps are full), but it will be shorter by one line for each empty queue.
I hope this was what you were looking for. It took me a while to fight with the template code to avoid anomalies like extra spacing in the final cell, but I finally figured out the necessary work-arounds in the template code given what I wanted to accomplish. Looking forward to hearing from you, and if it's what you wanted, I'll move it out to the queues page. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:27, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
- @BlueMoonset: thank you for working on this. I'm still confused by the double lines such as "Queue 7/Prep 7", "Queue 2/Prep 2", but I think I understand that if, say, only Queues 3 to 6 have been filled, the unfilled Queue lines will appear as Prep lines. Is that correct? Yoninah (talk) 19:29, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, that's correct. The joint queue/prep lines are for currently empty queues that will be filled by the prep of the same number. So the prep will run at the same time as the queue, because it's what will be promoted by admins to fill that queue. Another way of putting it is that the first empty queue will be filled by the next available prep (which will have identical numbers), and so on until you run out of empty queues, and then after that all the remaining preps are shown, so you always know when all of the preps will ultimately appear on the main page. (You can also think of the table as having the first seven rows always being the queue lines, just as it used to be, but any empty queue rows also have links to the preps that will fill them. Then after that, the remaining preps are listed to aid in planning ahead.) Please let me know when you're confident it will work for you, and I'll update the code on the Queues page. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:04, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
- @BlueMoonset: yes, let's give it a try. My main concern has been seeing the promotion times for the preps in addition to the queues. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 20:06, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, Yoninah. It's live on the queue page, and I've posted a note on the DYK talk page. Hope all goes smoothly! BlueMoonset (talk) 20:46, 13 June 2020 (UTC)

This was my first prep build. Any comments or concerns? --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 00:29, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Coffeeandcrumbs: yes, I was pleasantly surprised to see you building a set yesterday. You did a great job! The only minor observation I could offer is that you have two U.S. hooks side by side. - Fair enough. It was probably a personal attack to imply that you deserved to go thru that particular hazing ritual anyway... --Floquenbeam (talk) 18:28, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Floquenbeam: yes, I've noticed how they put you through the ringer, then everyone votes for you and you're home free. DYK for Cherry pit spitting
Hello, I am sorry if this is not the formal way to respond, I am still new and uncertain of exactly how to respond on wiki. You commented on my application for DYK for my article cherry pit spitting and that I needed a source for one of my paragraphs. I have now amended this but am not certain whether or how I go about correcting this on the DYK nomination page, Template:Did you know nominations/Cherry pit spitting.
Sorry this is not the normal way to do this, but really appreciate your time and help in reviewing my arcticle. Thanks so much

Yoninah...I just realized what you were trying to tell me years ago while going through my talk page archive. (User talk:Psiĥedelisto/Archive1 § Template:Did you know nominations/Figure humaine)
(The smileys aren't allowed because they're icons, and make it harder to see {{tick}}, {{cross}}, not for any other reason.) How you did not lose your cool with me, I will never know. The fact that you continued to WP:AGF and understood I was just a confused noob and not refusing to get the point is commendable. Your handling of my other mistakes at DYK has been just as good. Wikilink, 2nd try
While if one says Nach teacher it statistically means a woman, of the three men that come to mind with that title, one lived to 100 and also taught Mishna, another taught Historia and would today probably be over 100. The third is presently the rabbi of a shul.
Rather than base the Nach (Bible acronym) wikilink on a section in The Living Torah and Nach, this time I hosted, with more details about Nach teachers, their schools, and more citations, in a section of Tanakh. There's also an entry in Talk:Hebrew Bible. Pi314m (talk) 08:15, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

A thought
Hi! I was going through my talk page and came across your profile. Seeing your considerable contributions and interest in Jewish history, it made me think of a discussion I had a couple months ago. The Wiki page on Jews is generally well-written, but has an odd limitation - the "History" section covers only Babylon and Rome, ending in 96 AD. In contrast, the linked page Jewish history has a much fuller treatment, from antiquity to the modern day, as you would expect.
It's weird that the main page has such a limited scope for such an important topic. I brought this up on the talk page at the time (also on some WikiProject pages), but nothing came of it. I tried to fix the issue myself, but Jewish history is so vast and I have so little knowledge of it, that the task of summarizing 3500 years in a few well-written paragraphs was simply beyond me. It strikes me that you might be interested in fixing this issue, or know of other Wikipedians who are as well. Ganesha811 (talk) 17:02, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Ganesha811: thank you for thinking of me, but I really don't have any interest in improving these large-topic Jewish articles. Why don't you try IZAK, who knows more Jewish editors? Yoninah (talk) 17:17, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- Yoninah, sure, I'll drop them a note. :) Ganesha811 (talk) 17:45, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

SiIvaGunner - DYK
Hi Yoninah, I wanted to raise a concern about the DYK for SiIvaGunner - that article was composed by fans of SiIvaGunner and was about 90% original research; I trimmed it recently. I saw on the talk page that it's slated for a DYK. Maybe I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the articles featured in DYK had to meet certain quality standards, and that article is still very sketchy. I don't even know how it passed afd - there's a handful of sources that mention the Youtube account fleetingly, and there's nothing that provides in-depth coverage. Seems like it's premature to put it on the front page of Wikipedia, even as a DYK. Am I wrong about this? JimKaatFan (talk) 14:44, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
- @JimKaatFan: the discussion about pulling it is being held at WT:DYK#Queue 5: SiIvaGunner. Would you mind commenting there? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 15:30, 25 June 2020 (UTC)
- I did that, thanks for the heads-up. JimKaatFan (talk) 15:57, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Prep area 1
I was looking at Prep area 1 and noticed the wording on the third hook reads ... stated the the regiment... which doesn't look correct to me. Perhaps it should be ...stated that the regiment... using the word that which I will leave up to you. BTW, thank's for getting Pratt to #1 image slot position. I think it will get a lot of views and I can enter it into the DYK Hall of Fame because I'll bet it will get over 5000 views.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:21, 27 June 2020 (UTC)

Flag image in March On, Bahamaland DYK
Hi Yoninah! Thanks for adding the flag image to the above article and placing it as the picture hook. Just curious – is there a rule or norm that says an image cannot appear twice at DYK? Because that image was previously used in the picture slot six years ago on 10 July 2014 (for the flag of the Bahamas DYK nom). —Bloom6132 (talk) 17:51, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Bloom6132: no, it's fine. It just can't appear too often :) Yoninah (talk) 18:36, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
DYK for Lila Shanley
On 29 June 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Lila Shanley, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Hollywood stuntwoman Lila Finn, who "jumped out of bombers, [was] chased by lions, clawed by tigers, and thrown overboard into icy ocean waters at night", performed injury-free into her seventies? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Lila Shanley. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Lila Shanley), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
Hi again. Just uploaded this article. You may think there is scope for a DYK, particularly from the following:
- In the 1980s, Ferreira worked continuously with the Pasteur Institute, where she developed detection techniques for the HIV-1 lymphadenopathy associated virus (LAV), one of the etiological agents of HIV, and was responsible for the diagnosis of the first cases of AIDS in Portugal, including that of António Variações, a famous Portuguese singer. In September 1985, she flew to Paris from Lisbon with test tubes of blood in her coat. She held them close to her body to keep the blood at body temperature, necessary to maintain the stability of the samples.[4][5] The blood came from a patient from Guinea-Bissau who had been admitted to the Egas Moniz Hospital in Lisbon. It was known that people in Guinea-Bissau had AIDS but researchers could not find antibodies to HIV-1 in their blood. The research she carried out at the Pasteur Institute with Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier in the following two weeks culminated in the identification of a new type of AIDS virus, HIV-2, and paved the way for comparative studies between HIV-1 and HIV-2. Thanks Roundtheworld (talk) 18:57, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

A million readers for Reiner
The Million Award | |
The vital article Carl Reiner has been recently read by over a million readers. For your leading contributions to this work, I hereby present you the Million Award. Congratulations on this rare accomplishment, and thanks for all you do for Wikipedia's readers! Andrew🐉(talk) 11:17, 3 July 2020 (UTC) |
- @Andrew Davidson: thank you! I was pretty astonished to see that the article got a million clicks in two days. Perhaps I could say here that I was pretty frustrated by the RD process, and I see that it's going to be a problem for all entertainer biographies. I took a look at Mel Brooks (age 96) and Betty White (age 98), and while we wish them long years, when the time comes, it's not going to be easy to source their filmographies, especially the television ones. It seems these articles were built on IMDB.com pages, which are non-RS. Some of those obscure television appearances may never be sourced. I'm also wondering why this nomination was closed as "stale" after only two days? Best, Yoninah (talk) 11:38, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- You're welcome. I wouldn't worry about ITN/RD as it's only worth about ten thousand readers and you've gotten over a million regardless. I don't suppose most of those readers are there for the filmographies but it was interesting to find that Reiner himself used them when researching his material – see this exchange on Twitter: Family, stage and filmography of "Doc' Simon; Check out this Wikipedia article. I think it has all you want. Andrew🐉(talk) 11:53, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- I checked out the comparative view levels for Reiner and other articles which were listed at DYK and RD. Hugh Downs was the only one which was in the same league. Most RDs and DYK are around the 10K order of magnitude and I was please to see Queen Elizabeth's Oak doing well – I clicked through to that myself. That was written by Dumelow whose DYKs are always the best IMO. FYI, here's the link and I recommend ticking the logarithmic scale box, to separate the articles with such a wide range of readership. Andrew🐉(talk) 12:13, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Andrew Davidson: I understand. So what I'm hearing is not to worry about an RD appearance. If a famous celebrity dies, the thing to do is get the article in shape so all the readers who come there from Google News will have a decent article to look at. Yoninah (talk) 12:29, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hi all, thanks for the ping Andrew. I'm glad you appreciated the Queen Elizabeth Oak article, I always enjoy writing the tree ones, but even so was surprised it did so well. As to RDs, I haven't been very active at ITN for ages but it seems to be getting harder to get RDs promoted because of the number of them nominated. They go "stale" quite quickly now (there are six slots on the template listed in date order, when a death is longer ago than the oldest currently listed there's no point discussing it as it won't be posted). At the same time there regular nominations are still as slow as they have always been with old stories left on the template long after they are "current". Congrats on the million views Yoninah, I don't think anything I've written has ever reached that many people! - Dumelow (talk) 13:50, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Dumelow: thanks, but I think Andrew Davidson was just being encouraging after that losing battle we had at RD. Usually the award is for bringing an article to GA or FA status. If you're talking about DYK nominations hanging around, I totally agree. I wish we could shut down nominations that sit for a week or two after the reviewer has posted. But they're also very encouraging at DYK ... Best, Yoninah (talk) 14:24, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- I'm mainly interested in the readership stats because they are what matters most – it's no use writing articles if nobody reads them That's what's so good about DYK – it makes a real difference to the readership for obscure topics while celebrities like Reiner don't really need any help.
- Anyway, Dumelow may be doing better than he supposes. If you look at the all-time readership for the articles that he has created then it's much more than a million – it's over 5 million! His best article by a long way is TV pickup, with almost 800K readers to date. Yoninah has had over 5 million readers for his creations too and his top article is The Twelve Spies with over 650K to date. These numbers are comparable with mass media like best-sellers and YouTube channels. Well done!
- Andrew🐉(talk) 19:02, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Andrew Davidson: Are you serious???!!! I didn't even work on The Twelve Spies; I just dumped everything on a page to wait for someone/me to clean it up. Yes, I agree, it's better to work on pages that actually get looked at. BTW I'm a "she". Best, Yoninah (talk) 19:05, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- I didn't realise. It's good to talk and share our different perspectives as we can learn so much. Andrew🐉(talk) 19:21, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for that link Andrew, how very interesting. I would never have thought Laura J. Richardson (a 2017 article on an American general) would have so many views; though I must admit TV pickup is one of my all-time favourites! - Dumelow (talk) 19:58, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Dumelow: Women warriors get good attention; I did well myself with Tammie Jo Shults who reached the Top 40 in WP:DYK/TOP. But my most surprising hit has been Something old which just started as a light piece about the rhyme. I suppose it gets lots of attention from nervous brides – 720K so far! Building prep sets

Hi Yoninah, I have added the Garden of Eden image to the article but I'm not sure how to add it to the hook, can you walk me through that? Thank you for your time and help. --Ashleyyoursmile! 11:40, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Ashleyyoursmile: I usually copy a blank image template from one of the queues and add it to the nomination template above the line that says:
</div>
- (Right above the line that says: <!-- Please do not edit above this line unless you are a DYK volunteer who is closing the discussion. -->)
- If a blank image template is not available, copy a filled-in template from either the prep sets or another nomination and change these fields to your file name and caption: |image= |caption= That's it! Yoninah (talk) 12:05, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you so much, I have added it to the hook. Let me know if it looks alright. --Ashleyyoursmile! 04:19, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

Queues, prep sets and DYK psychology
At the moment there are five full queues and seven full prep sets. Conversely, there are two empty queues and no empty prep sets. If I were to move the next prep set to the queue, that would make six full queues and free up one prep area which you could fill, but I want to suggest that this is psychologically wrong.
There are a number of admins who traditionally have moved preps to queues, and a few who occasionally have done so. If these people always find the queues well-filled, they may stop promoting preps and move to other realms of admin activity, and DYK will be the poorer for losing their interest. So I personally intend in future to only move a prep set to the queue when there are fewer than four full queues. That way, other admins will always find that there is useful DYK work for them to do.
Then there is the matter of building prep sets. There are several editors who traditionally have sometimes moved hooks into preps or built whole prep sets, but they cannot do so if the prep sets are always full. They see that their help is not needed, and they go away and do other things. Now prep set building really needs more than one person doing it because after a bit, a single person gets stymied in that they have involvement in too many hooks and then cannot promote them.
So I would like to suggest that we stop being so efficient and aim to always leave at least two queues and two prep sets permanently unfilled, so as to encourage other people to participate. There will still be at least a week between a hook being promoted and it appearing on the main page, which is ample for scrutiny purposes. What do you think? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:48, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, Cwmhiraeth. First of all, I'd like to say that I miss doing prep sets with you. I would fill out a set at night and I always knew you would fill in the next set in the morning. Now that you are an administrator, you seem to be the only one moving preps to queues. I don't think it's a question of other administrators shying away from doing the promotions, because they've always been busy with other (non-DYK) things and had to be pinged and reminded to promote sets. Queues can sit empty for days without anyone but you making the promotions. Leaving three queues open is not going to motivate anyone unless they get a nudge IMO.
- I'm actually flabbergasted that you're even suggesting that we leave one or two prep sets "
permanently unfilled
". This seems to fly in the face of that whole push by valereee and BlueMoonset earlier this year to create 7 prep sets and 7 queues. Personally, I didn't understand what was wrong with 6 prep sets and queues, but now you're proposing 5 prep sets and queues? I thought the whole point was to have 2 full weeks loaded and ready to go. - If you're suggesting that I lay off prep set building for a while, fine. I enjoy article creation. I can do more reviews. But when you finally open up another prep set, who's going to fill it? The Squirrel Conspiracy started being active but is now taking a break. 97198 pops by now and then. Who else? Yoninah (talk) 20:11, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
- (as an aside) I'm still around and answer pings, and can do DYK prep sets if needed. I just don't have the heart to write about my preferred article topic at the moment, for obvious reasons. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 22:37, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
- I do see the psychology Cwmhiraeth is talking about. For me, after the last major discussion on whether we should go to 2-a-days, I decided that since a set a week was what I was happy to do, that's what I was going to stick with instead of doing 2-3 per week when it seemed necessary and feeling resentful. Do we have any idea how many editors are regularly filling preps and queues? Because I feel like that's the crucial indicator. —valereee (talk) 20:20, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Valereee: It is easy to see who has been moving preps to queues by looking at the "history" tab on the NextPrep template. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:08, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- Cwmhiraeth, well this is embarrassing, where's the NextPrep template? —valereee (talk) 11:44, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Valereee: Sorry, I meant the prep counter that you update after moving a prep set to the queue. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:31, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, that makes me feel less like an idiot! :) Useful tip, thanks! —valereee (talk) 12:46, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Valereee: Sorry, I meant the prep counter that you update after moving a prep set to the queue. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:31, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

- For me, the reason for seven queues and preps was to allow more flexibility: sometimes, more admins would be active, and sometimes more prep builders would be: if you had the seventh's space available, it could be filled. While we seem to have more preps being built, there was at least one point in the past week when all seven queues were filled. I didn't see it as always having two full weeks of sets in the pipeline, though it was possible that we'd have that many. I've been surprised and pleased that we've been maintaining nine or more sets (usually more) lately.
- Perhaps more queues might be filled if we had the box at the top of the Queues page say there was a backlog when fewer queues were empty. For a long time the message didn't go up until all but one queue was empty; after the recent change, I made it so that if a majority of queues were empty (four), the notice would go up. But maybe it should be if three queues are empty, the message goes up. Perhaps admins need a visual reminder at an earlier point, which might help us avoid some pings on the talk page.
- Part of what's going on is that we're only promoting one queue a day—the queues are emptying up more slowly and we only need to average one new prep a day. We're not yet used to that more relaxed rate. But we'll probably be back to two per day before another two weeks have passed, since we're at 104 approved now, and the switch turns again when we hit 120. I think aiming for two empty queues and two empty preps would be unwise while we're putting 14 sets to the main page every week. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:14, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
- Indeed, what I was suggesting was referring to when we have one set a day. Moving to two, things hot up, and I wouldn't suggest purposefully leaving preps unfilled. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:08, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- Well, we've just hit the magic 120, so we're going back to two sets a day in about five hours. It never rains but it pours... BlueMoonset (talk) 19:09, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- It was a nice respite, for as long as it lasted. —valereee (talk) 19:18, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Cwmhiraeth: the more I think about it, the more hurt and angry I am by your initial post. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you were basically telling me that I was doing too much promotion and not giving anyone else a chance. I have felt very dedicated to the project over the past 10+ years and have always been eager to help and move things along, but if you feel I am overdoing it, and others are similarly dissatisfied with my work, I will bow out, though not happily. Yoninah (talk) 18:27, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
- I'm very sorry if I have offended you, because I too am dedicated to the success of the DYK project, and we have worked together on it for many years. Nor am I in the least dissatisfied with what you are doing, because I think you are doing an excellent job keeping the prep sets filled, and are needed more than ever now that we have moved to two sets a day. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:56, 11 July 2020 (UTC)
- Yoninah, I'm so sorry to see this! I don't think anyone was trying to say you were doing too much and to give others a chance! I think literally the thought was if one of us is doing more than they prefer to do to make sure we're getting enough done, maybe it's counterproductive because it doesn't look like we need more help. (That was exactly what I had been doing, in fact.) I don't think it was intended to tell you to slow down, just not to feel pressured to do more than you are actually happy to do. When I was building preps instead of moving them, I never felt like you weren't giving me a chance to build one. Certainly no one is dissatisfied with your work! My concern has always been what we'd do if you got burned out. —valereee (talk) 12:06, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you, valereee. Now that there are more prep sets to build for our 2-a-day program, no one's going to complain if I build one. Actually, I turned to reviewing old nominations in the past few days, and I can say that I've gotten burned out doing that! Best, Yoninah (talk) 10:40, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Prep 2
I just filled up prep 2. I stacked it with hooks you nominated or reviewed, since you can't push those to prep.
While I was building it, I realized we've got a ton of music hooks approved at the moment, so we might want to try to get two per prep until those thin out.

Edith L. Williams
As this is the centennial year for US suffrage, I thought it important to document that that did not apply to women in unincorporated territories. Perhaps Williams would be a good candidate for DYK? Something like "...that women in the US Virgin Islands did not gain suffrage until after Edith L. Williams attempted to register to vote in 1935?" If you think there is a better hook, feel free to make any changes you want. If you are too busy, no worries. Thanks! SusunW (talk) 20:01, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
- @SusunW: next time please give me a day or two to nominate this! The sentence with the hook fact in the article needs a cite please. Yoninah (talk) 20:37, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

I really want to thank you for your sweet gesture of donating a QPQ for my DYK. I really appreciate it. I have been very busy lately with work ans stuff and hence could not do any editing. Augusta Victoria Hospital
I have just listed a photograph of the Augusta Victoria Hospital as POTD for August 5th. The article on the hospital states that it is located on the southern side of the Mount of Olives but the description of the image states that the hospital is on the northern side. Judging by the coordinates, the latter would appear to be correct. At the moment, I copied the sentence in the article into the POTD caption so that the two would agree. Are you able to clarify the issue? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:33, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

ODNB
Hi Yoninah over at WIR I was just discussing about access to ODNB, which is now made very easy via Wikipedia:The_Wikipedia_Library/Databases (alongside a bunch of other reference sources). I just thought I'd mention it to you because I remember on a DYK nom you said you didn't have access to it. Although it has a lot missing, I am quite enjoying using ODNB for certain biographies. Thanks and also, sorry
Thanks for your copyedit of Agnes Samuelson. I try to keep all copyedits completed by other editors in mind for future articles. I would also like to apologize for my attitude on the DYK talk page. It's not so much you, but more so that I was dealing with personal issues that day. SL93 (talk) 19:21, 25 July 2020 (UTC)
- You're welcome for the copyediting. Actually, I didn't see that it was your article until after I edited it. I just saw it in a prep set and took a look.
- Are you referring to Template:Did you know nominations/Sarah Chapone? I didn't take any offense. It was just another instance of my tending to write things quickly and then wonder why other editors don't understand my drift. I have to remember to spell everything out in my posts. - @SL93: no offense there either :). Perhaps you could tell that I was also having a bad day on Friday and getting very fed up with DYK. I still am. I decided to leave prep building to other editors and then I came online tonight and saw a bunch of problems in a new editor's set. I'm trying to go back to article creation for a while. Template:Did you know nominations/Glutonny Very much disagree. That's a lousy image. That's why I didn't use it. Seven Pandas (talk) 19:36, 25 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Seven Pandas: of course, you're entitled to your opinion. But it is a clear image, which is saying more than what usually comes our way. Anyway, I removed it from the set mainly because there were two "2019" hooks in a row. Best, Yoninah (talk) 19:38, 25 July 2020 (UTC)

The DYK on Elizabeth Nance, her photo is ok but not great and I just created one on Lauren Meyers--just asked her for a photo. Seven Pandas (talk) 20:42, 25 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Seven Pandas: Nice. Since we're running 2 sets a day, feel free to promote person images even every other prep set. Yoninah (talk) 15:19, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Seven Pandas: I'd also like to note that, personal feelings aside, certain hooks automatically score with Wikipedia's readership, which is largely young, male, early 20s. War and battle hooks, suicides, games, popular singers, and anything to do with popular culture scores big. I usually run ship images, even if they're not great, because they do attract a lot of views. Check out WP:DYKSTATS to see what I'm talking about. While we get a lot of women hooks and images through the WP:Women in Red project, they really don't get a lot of pageviews (unless the woman is especially attractive). So running a woman image every other day really isn't ideal, unless it's March Women's History Month. Best, Yoninah (talk) 11:22, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
- We should focus on quality and varied topics, not scoring points. It's not a for profit organization and we're volunteers. It's an encyclopedia, not a game show. Though I do realize a lot of wikians act like this is a MMORPG.Seven Pandas (talk) 11:35, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi Yoninah! Thanks for promoting the above nom, with File:Cardinal Gerald Lacroix.jpg. Question about DYK
The reviewer at Template:Did you know nominations/A Piece of Eden wants me to add the ending resolutions to the plot to the article. I have never included the entire plot in start class articles and no one mentioned such a thing before, in DYK or elsewhere. I'm just seeing if there is an unwritten rule about there needing to be an entire plot section. I could write the ending, but my mind is sketchy on those details so I would need to get a hold of a copy of the title again. I would rather not do that. SL93 (talk) 23:19, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
- @SL93: when it comes to film articles, I actually have to hold myself back from writing more than 4 paragraphs! I'm not sure what more needs to be added to the summary, though I think it reads very choppily. The lead is also pretty short; usually we include the stars of the film. You could also add a sentence about the critical reception. And what happened to the cast list? Best, Yoninah (talk) 23:25, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
- I will add more to the lead and add a cast list. My plot sections are why I have been mostly focusing on biographies. SL93 (talk) 23:28, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
- @SL93: Other editors write less than you do–see CAPTAIN MEDUSA film articles that often get away with a one-line synopsis. Yoninah (talk) 23:30, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
- I edited the plot section and I hope it looks a little less choppy. If it doesn't, I will request help from a copyeditor. SL93 (talk) 23:48, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
- @SL93: yes, it reads better now, thanks. I honestly don't see what's wrong with not including the conclusion—see that the TCM review did just that—but reviewers (like myself) may feel that since this is going up on the main page, it should be close to complete. Anyway, I've always found that by engaging in a back and forth with the reviewer, some compromises can be met. That's also what happened in this case. Best, Yoninah (talk) 10:46, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

What is wrong this this article/hook? Seven Pandas (talk) 10:58, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Seven Pandas: Nothing; it's great. But it's your nomination, so someone else has to promote it. The system tries to have as many eyes on an article as possible to root out any errors. Best, Yoninah (talk) 11:03, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

DYK
I should have never said those things on my talk page. I admit that sometimes I think that, but sometimes I don't so I really should have just kept that thought to myself. When I posted that comment, the main thing on my mind was how a few Women In Red members stated that I was belittling women subconsiously (that's a first) by where I placed the Marriages section...which was resolved by the section being moved one section lower (What a way to belittle women...). I figured if they, in this case one of them being admin, could say crap like that about me and get away with it, I could potentially not worry so much about what I say. Opinion
Hi Yoninah, can you please take a look at this nomination Template:Did you know nominations/Mic Drop (song)? I'd originally nominated the article for DYK on July 21. However the character count was just short of a 5x expansion at that time. It was a GA nominee back then, so the reviewer suggested to renominate it once it passes the GA. So I'd asked the reviewer to close the nomination. The article became a GA on August 5 and I want to renominate it now. However, the original nomination still appears on the template talk of current DYK noms. I pinged the reviewer in the above discussion but apparently they aren't active for a few days so I'm asking for your opinion. Thank you for your time. --Ashleyyoursmile! 07:15, 7 August 2020 (UTC)
I didn't create this, but I reworked it yesterday because the claim of notability was based on inheritance, rather than her own. It is >5x expanded from where it started at 359 char, if you are interested in it for DYK. No worries if you are too busy or you don't think there is enough there. I am off more than I am on right now, so do as you see best, as I may not be able to get back to you right away. SusunW (talk) 16:41, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

Just flipped this one to main space. She had the original idea and then planned and organized the 1964 Occupation of Alcatraz. No worries if you are too busy or you don't think it has broad enough appeal. I truly appreciate your taking articles to DYK. It is just more than I can deal with, especially now. Thank you for your work. SusunW (talk) 14:58, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Dear User:Yoninah, thank you for your message on my talk page and for the work you've done on the article so far! Would you be interested in adding some of the information that you feel is missing from the Judaism section of the article since you have knowledge about this? If not, I would be grateful if you could perhaps point me to an article discussing the content you'd like me to add to the section so that I can do it myself. I hope this helps and look forward to hearing from you! With regards, AnupamTalk 03:25, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

I just took this one live today. Not sure how one would do a DYK with all the name changes she had, but she is clearly a significant participant in Native American rights, if you want to try a DYK. If not, no worries. Perhaps, something about leading and being arrested during the Third World Strikes which led to the first Ethnic Studies program in the US, or leading the 1969 Occupation of Alcatraz? (Both of those were when she was LaNada Means). SusunW (talk) 18:53, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

I removed the word documentary because of the character limit. Anyway, I agree with your analysis and I tried searching for the 25 countries fact and I couldn’t find anything. Why was an inaccurate hook promoted if we know it isn’t true? SL93 (talk) 16:03, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

Don't know if you have seen this anecdote but an article on a long-gone website mentioned this about Jane:
"As a child in Atlanta Jane became aware of racial problems when she went to her dancing lesson at the age of three. She took the trolley with her nanny. The conductor invited her to sit up front and tell him about her radio show. Jane said she would get her nanny who had gone to the rear of the trolley. The conductor said no, her nanny had to stay in the back. Jane said that was silly and went to the back to sit with her nanny, Willie." -- http://www.classicimages.com/articles/2008/01/17/past_articles/withersjane.txt PAustin4thApril1980 (talk) 01:40, 5 September 2020 (UTC)

- Maile, thank you, I will take a look at that link. But all the film titles are sourced. - Good question and it is confusing. There is already a cite to this in 1946. Pardoe p 7 confirms it was awarded by Truman, but that doesn't really help. Okay, I think I have it...The Medal of Freedom (1945) established by Truman was modified in 1963 under JFK renaming it to Presidential Medal of Freedom.[9] I guess I can link it to the first article, but that will mean nothing to anyone who isn't a military history buff, as no where in that article does it explain its significance as the "foremost", i.e, highest civilian honor of the country, nor state that it was reestablished by Kennedy. - @SusunW: OK, I edited the article a bit more and added an alt, which I like better. I'm surprised the GA reviewer didn't look up Japanese internment camps to check the wording. Yoninah (talk) 20:29, 13 September 2020 (UTC)
- I've asked Gog the Mild, who is active on the military project about POWs. SusunW (talk) 20:33, 13 September 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, civilians are technically internees, not prisoners of war. But the article as it stands only mentions her being taken prisoner or captured - which is fine, that can happen to civilians. I tried to check the DYK nom, but couldn't find it. Any chance of a pointer? If it describes her as a prisoner of war it will, IMO, need tweaking. Thanks. Gog the Mild (talk) 21:29, 13 September 2020 (UTC)

- @Valereee: I'm not sure what you mean by
Do we have a problem?
I was just expressing my (perhaps unwarranted) opinion that administrators should keep the rules even better than others. I was skimming the noms page looking for hooks to promote and coming across one issue after another, and I think I was just fed up. There are so many personalities at DYK and while I feel comfortable with the rules-oriented ones, I get aggravated by everyone else. I'm sorry for saying anything. Yoninah (talk) 00:55, 10 September 2020 (UTC)- Okay, I get being fed up. :) I didn't even know there was a rule, other than you needed to get it in within a week. I didn't see it as a big deal whether it stayed on the unapproved noms page because it still needed the qpq vs. got moved to the approved noms page but was being held, but I can see that might feel like gaming the system. If there's a next time I'll put in a comment instead. The 'do we have a problem?' was me trying to determine whether the reason you sounded so fed up was because you were fed up with me. —valereee (talk) 10:41, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

Johnny Doughboy
I have revision deleted Johnny Doughboy but it is not nearly such a clear-cut decision because the copyvio dates back to 2013 and it is less easy to tell who was copying whom. I once requested a rev del where a plot section seemed to have come from IMDb. The creator was outraged and made a complaint at AnI (which was quickly closed down) because they said they had written the IMDb plot summary! Anyway, I suggest you request one any time you come across a copivio, and the responding admin can make the decision as to whether it is justified. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 12:51, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

My "More" tab gives the extra options "protect" and "delete", but requesting revision deletion is something anyone can do. Anyway you can find the template here. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:31, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Cwmhiraeth: Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about. Could it be that you have additional tools as an admin which I don't? And how does the template help me? I thought an admin has to do this. Yoninah (talk) 19:53, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
- Editors who find copivios request revision deletions, and admins actually do the deletions. Here is a category [10] which currently has 7 requests. One of these is Daddy-Long-Legs (novel). It's 9pm here, so I'm stopping for the night now. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 20:09, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

What do I do about this?
After the re-open, I got this. I assume it wants a template somewhere, but where do I put it? Today? Maury Markowitz (talk) 21:01, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Maury Markowitz: It's reminding you to re-list the template at WP:DYKN, since the template was removed when it was rejected. I re-listed it for you. Best, Yoninah (talk) 08:53, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks! I was not clear if I should re-list it on the 14th or now. Maury Markowitz (talk) 11:08, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I've had at least 100 arguments with a certain Canadian editor regarding the JFK assassination. He's dominated the talk pages on related articles for 15 years, and he cannot comment without calling everyone who disagrees with him "disingenuous". It's the price every editor has to pay if they want to be part of the conversation. Joegoodfriend (talk) 21:32, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Joegoodfriend: I appreciate your note. Yeah, I got the idea that he's the gatekeeper of the JFK assassination pages. I said what I had to say and am moving on to greener pastures. Good luck to you! Yoninah (talk) 08:50, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Question about DYK rules
Greetings. I'm about to expand the page Albert Evans (dancer), and the current version seems to be mostly copied from his official bio, except a few small word changes and the section about his death. I believe in this case fivefold expansion does not include copied texts, as I saw you claimed that a few days ago, I'm just not sure which exact rule it is? Corachow (talk) 19:42, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Corachow: the relevant guideline is Rule A4. If the current text is a copyvio, then delete it and cite the website it was copied from in your edit summary. Then you can rewrite the page as a new page. However, if some of the text is not copied, then you just need to do a 5x expansion of the existing text. Yoninah (talk) 10:38, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

I just took Socorro Sánchez live if you are interested. If you are busy, no worries. SusunW (talk) 22:38, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
- @SusunW: Hi, I nominated here. Please add a cite to the article about her being the first feminist journalist. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 21:56, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
- No problem, Can we show her name? Just Socorro Sánchez is sufficient, that is what she was known by. SusunW (talk) 21:59, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
- @SusunW: sure, I was trying to save on character count. Yoninah (talk) 22:02, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. I added the quote and the link, I think even without access to the Oxford Dictionary of Caribbean and Afro–Latin American Biography you can see the ref. SusunW (talk) 22:11, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
- @SusunW: I don't see that you added any cite to the article ...? I have to log off soon and will be away a few days for Yom Kippur. Yoninah (talk) 22:16, 26 September 2020 (UTC)

Alt2 would work well in the last spot in my view. Philafrenzy (talk) 02:49, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Philafrenzy: I did promote ALT2 to the last spot. But both the article and source described it as erotic, not amorous, so I tweaked it. Yoninah (talk) 09:29, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

I had hoped that a 150th birthday of a composer might be reason enough to show him pictured, no? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:53, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt: I didn't see the birthdate cited either in this article or in the Louis Vierne article. Yoninah (talk) 18:54, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- It is now, in the composer's article. It's unusual to reference a composer's birthday in every composition's article. There will be more refs for him until it happens. - My first idea when I saw the anniversary at the beginning of the year was make the composer's article GA for the purpose, but then it occurred to me that you never know when you get a GA review, - could be way to soon or too late, - so did the other idea. The piece was played this summer to honour him. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:32, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt: Thanks. Yoninah (talk) 19:40, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
A cup of coffee for you!
Thanks for your insightful review of {{Did you know nominations/Clinical trials in India}}. I have no reason to believe you have particular interest in either clinical trials or regulatory development in India, but you read the sources and identified imprecise wording in what I proposed. Everything you said was correct, and your feedback was useful. You also pinged me about a delay in response. I had neglected to continue in the conversation. Thanks for calling me back into it, and thanks for your patience. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:47, 29 September 2020 (UTC) |
