Remember that this edit-a-thon has a global focus, so consider reviewing articles from countries that you haven't reviewed yet. Expand your horizons! --Grnrchst (talk) 11:16, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
- As we move towards the end of the month, I decided to uncomment the remainder of the pre-October backlog and re-order it a bit. Here I have sorted nominations into: "High importance", for countries that we haven't nominated or reviewed yet; "Mid importance", for countries that we have only nominated or reviewed once; and "Low importance", for countries with multiple nominations and/or reviews. --Grnrchst (talk) 13:34, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- We're almost to the end of the edit-a-thon! We're currently 4 countries off meeting out goal, so if anybody is interested in taking on one of these high importance articles for review, now is the perfect time to do so! If we get the July and August backlog done, that'll put us over the line. --Grnrchst (talk) 11:17, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Welcome to our fifth GA editathon!
editHello everyone -- welcome to WikiProject Women in Green's fifth Good Article (GA) editathon!
- Before you get started, remember to check out both the event rules and instructions for beginning your GA project (whether as a GA nominator or reviewer). One important update from our previous events: GA nominations that are quickfailed will not be considered a qualifying article for this event for either the nominator or reviewer, but good faith nominations that are fully reviewed and failed will still qualify. We want to see solid work going towards improving these articles, so take your time.
- Have questions about bringing an article up to GA standards? Start a new section on this talk page to chat with the group.
- If you want extra feedback on your project before nominating it (especially if this is your first time), make a request for feedback from Women in Green's 20-Minute Assessment team.
Good luck with your projects! I'm excited to see what you'll be working on, and I'll check in again later through the month. Best, Alanna the Brave (talk) 00:41, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
Would this make a good GA nomination?
editI'd like to nominate Jolene Rickard. In a quick check with the copyvio tool located on the meetup page, I noted a copyvio. However -- it's a backwards copyvio, a website lifted content from Wikipedia. I'm sure, I wrote the article; I left a more detailed explanation on the talkpage today. Would it still be a good choice for a GA nomination, or would this confuse the issue too much? ☆ Bri (talk) 15:39, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
- Backwards copyvio is something that GA is generally aware of. Occasionally a reviewer might miss it and think it's regular copyvio, but it's something that can be addressed with a quick clarification. Right now the biggest obstacle would be the level of coverage; there's some debate over how small an article can be while still providing the required "broad coverage", but it's rare that an article with only a few hundred words meets it. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 15:57, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
Halfway point: Check-in
editWe're halfway through the month – and we've managed to cover at least 14 countries in our nominations and reviews so far! How is everybody doing? What are you working on? I'm working on expanding the article for Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk this week (Canada), and I've got my eye on one or two other articles. We have lots of existing GA nominations waiting for review right now, so if you've been thinking about jumping in and taking one on, now is a great time to do so. Alanna the Brave (talk) 22:44, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
- I'm working on Hilda Hilst, and while I think it's in a good enough state to be promoted, I'll wait for the 20-minute review to be done to nominate it. — MaterialWorks 23:05, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
- @MaterialWorks: Neat article! If none of the other 20-minute assessment team members can take it on by Tuesday, I'll do the assessment for you. Alanna the Brave (talk) 23:21, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
- I've been swamped with traveling for my mom's 90th birthday and then home for our own anniversary, but am hoping to finish Yoko Matsuoka. Depends on if the last critical source can be obtained and if George can get me the photos I want. The minute I discovered her, I wanted to tell her story, because she was a fearless critic of war and aggression, despite the fact that it impacted her career. SusunW (talk) 13:36, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- SusunW: Matsuoka's article seems like it's coming along really well! Quite a life story. I hope you find that last source. Alanna the Brave (talk) 15:13, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
- Since I am still waiting on the critical source for Matsuoka, I searched for another candidate and found Mrs. Ngo Ba Thanh. Still working out the photos, but I finally figured out what to call the article . SusunW (talk) 15:12, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
- What's your critical source, @SusunW? Maybe I can help? -- asilvering (talk) 16:54, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
- asilvering Thanks! I appreciate the offer. this one. Megalibrarygirl couldn't get it. David Eppstein has ordered it, as has Eddie891, but so far, no one has received it. SusunW (talk) 17:02, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hm, damn. We have a book by that title, but a different subtitle: 1923-1983. A strange date to end an encyclopedia of the Showa Era, and no indication at all that this is a multivolume work. Since she falls into this period anyway, I'll order this book and see what I find. It's in offsite storage, so it should only take a couple of days. -- asilvering (talk) 17:15, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
- asilvering cool. Thanks! Here's the link to hathitrust with her name in the search bar. If you press it, it will show page numbers if that helps. SusunW (talk) 19:31, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
- David Eppstein found it, asilvering and gave a link on the WiR talk. SusunW (talk) 22:45, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
- The copy I ordered up is already at the holds desk, so I'll have a look at it anyway out of curiosity. -- asilvering (talk) 16:14, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- Cool. If it has anything interesting about her, please feel free to add it. SusunW (talk) 16:16, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

- Hey all! I'm back from my self-imposed break and eager to contribute, although I'm still feeling rather unwell so will have to be cautious about that and try taking things easy. I currently have a few articles that I think are ready to go. Of the countries not currently covered, I can nominate Ashraf Dehghani, Olga Taratuta and Saodat Ismailova. Of countries already covered, I may also consider nominating Maria Lacerda de Moura and Carolina Bunjes, although again, I should try and take things easy. :P Hope everything has gone well so far with the edit-a-thon! All the best to all of you <3 --Grnrchst (talk) 12:44, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
- Glad to have you back Grnrchst! Those all look like great articles to work on -- but definitely take it easy. I think we're free to cruise through the rest of the month at our own paces, regardless of number of articles, so no stress. ;-) Alanna the Brave (talk) 15:13, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
- I'd been planning to join in but I've spent most of the month ill so far. I did spot a short GAN in my wheelhouse though, so I'll at least have time to review Beatrice of Nazareth. -- asilvering (talk) 12:17, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
- Take care of yourself asilvering! Hope you feel better soon. <3 --Grnrchst (talk) 15:30, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

Nomination
editI'm not familiar with this project, but I've got a good article nomination that I think would qualify in case anyone is interested in reviewing it: Louise Fulton. BeanieFan11 (talk) 15:34, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
Review swaps
editI currently have four open nominations for this event that need reviewers. To help keep the backlog down (and maybe to work through my own long list of noms), I'll gladly review a nomination from anyone who wants to take on one of mine. I encourage everyone else to swap reviews with one another as well, since the GAN backlog has been rising and we've been a net increase on it. Hopefully we can see another dozen reviews by the end of the event. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 16:42, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- Great initiative! Unfortunately, I don't think I can help with it, since I'm not very familiar with the GA criteria and the process in general. Hopefully we'll get the backlog down. — MaterialWorks 17:46, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- @MaterialWorks: Is Hilda Hilst your first nomination? I hope once that gets reviewed that it'll give you a bit of a window into what the process is like. Personally I only felt confident enough to start reviewing after I'd already had three or four nominations under my belt, so I understand the hesitancy. Best of luck with that review by the way, if I don't get around to doing it myself. :P --Grnrchst (talk) 18:12, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you! It is indeed my first nomination, I'm more of a WikiElf than an article writer myself, so I don't have much experience in this area. — MaterialWorks 21:07, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

- @Thebiguglyalien: Good idea, let's get these reviews going! I may end up reviewing the article on Tsikhanouskaya, if someone else doesn't beat me to it. She's a figure that I'm very interested in reading more about. --Grnrchst (talk) 18:14, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- We're now down to a third of edit-a-thon nominated articles that still need reviews. Let's keep it going! --Grnrchst (talk) 14:45, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
Checking in on 20-minute-reviewees
editJust checking in on the editors that submitted articles for 20-minute-review, but that haven't yet nominated it for GA. @Ruud Buitelaar: submitted Lina Coen; @LWu22: submitted Amy Karle; @DesiBoy101: submitted Pilloo Pochkhanawala; @MelissaThacker: submitted Jessie Gillespie Willing; and @Agus Damanik: submitted Sri Parmini. To each of you: did you find the 20 minute review process helpful and do you think you will be nominating your article for GA review before the edit-a-thon ends next week? I hope you're all doing well and have gotten something out of this process. :) --Grnrchst (talk) 15:01, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Grnrchst - Thank you for following up on the GA 20-minute-review submission. I did find the review process really helpful which gave me a decent idea of what goes behind a GA development. That being said, I won't be nominating the said article for this particular edit-a-thon as a lot of improvements are required. So I'll work on it in the future sometime. Regards - DesiBoy101 (talk) 03:06, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- Same like @DesiBoy101. I think it still needs an improvement especially for the picture Agus Damanik (talk) 04:42, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Grnrchst Thank you for checking up on this. The review process is helpful, as is the information and discussions around the meetup. Thank you and reviewer @Vanamonde93 for your help and support.
- The article Amy Karle still needs a lot of work and is not ready for a GA nomination next week. I am a student editor and was trying to update it to GA standards. I had used Wikipedia guidelines and also referenced GAs whom are the articles' colleagues including Neri Oxman. I made good faith edits to improve the article, but it seems the article was in too bad of shape before I arrived. A more experienced editor since revamped the article.
- I would still like to help improve the article. On the talk page, editors had referred to a "last good version": [here] from before coi concerns which I would like to draw from to replace some of the removed content. The areas that I would like to review and re-add are the sections on: Residencies, Awards, and "The Heart of Evolution" in the Major Works section. I would double check all info and make any necessary updates before re-adding. What do you think? I would appreciate your advice and suggestions. LWu22 (talk) 20:06, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
Closing thoughts
editI probably won't be doing much today, as I want to take some time off for the holiday. Just wanted to give my closing thoughts for the edit-a-thon, having nominated 6 articles and reviewed 11. I really ended up enjoying this one, I think more-so than previous wildcard edit-a-thons. The global theme forced me out of my editing comfort zone, so I ended up writing and reviewing articles I don't think I normally would have on my day-to-day, which itself was a wonderful exercise. Similar kinds of themed events might be the way to go for future edit-a-thons. One I had in mind was a more historical-focused one, as I noticed that only a handful of our nominations and reviews were about women from before the 20th century (credit to Moriwen and AirshipJungleman29 for submitting these).
In any case, thanks to everybody that participated in making more women green! :D --Grnrchst (talk) 09:27, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks Grnrchst! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It pushed me out of my comfort zone as well -- I'm reviewing a sports team article for the first time (Lebanon), so that was a challenge. A history-related theme could be fun in future... maybe some kind of "time travel" GA editathon, where we aim to cover multiple centuries? If anyone else has feedback or suggestions for future GA events, feel free to add it here to the thread.
- As a wrap up, I also want to say to everyone: Congrats! Amazing work this month. :-) We covered 32 different countries and touched on all continents (excluding only the north/south poles), with a final total of 28 article nominations and 30 reviews. A few reminders for all participants:
- Reviewers, please try to ensure that any remaining in-progress reviews are wrapped up by November 30th.
- If you haven't already done so, please tag your GA nominations and reviews with the talk page template
{{WIG|5}}
- If you would like to receive notifications about future WikiProject Women in Green events, please add your name to our list of project members.
- Lastly, know that you're welcome to add your editathon GA nominations or reviews to our 2023 Goal Tracking page. We're happy to list your excellent efforts as part of our annual goals & results.
- Thank you to Grnrchst and Thebiguglyalien for leading the charge on our GA reviewing work this month, and to Mujinga, Vanamonde and BennyOnTheLoose for tackling all those 20-minute assessments. I'll be handing out barnstars to participants over the next week or two. Best, Alanna the Brave (talk) 01:42, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for organizing. – Editør (talk) 20:36, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- Alanna the Brave your efforts at organizing these are always amazing. I truly appreciate the efforts of all the reviewers and contributors. I managed in spite of all my real life complications to write 2 and review 1, which seems pale in comparison. Grnrchst your urging, although I do always try to write about women globally, made me look specifically for women in Asia involved in the anti-war movement and I learned so much. I am working on a women's organization that was affiliated with the Eastern bloc, Latin America, Africa, and Asia and I am hoping that it will both present a much clearer picture of the 20th century women's movements and be an anchor article to discover many more women to write about. I think I might not have realized the terrible shape of that article had you not urged the global focus, so thank you very much. SusunW (talk) 22:54, 1 November 2023 (UTC)
- That's wonderful to hear! I'm so glad you learnt a lot from this :D --Grnrchst (talk) 08:46, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

DIY nomination versus selection
editOf the current eight Did you know... hooks on the Main Page, seven are about men and one is about a book written by a woman and a man. Meanwhile, multiple DIY nominations of articles about women passed as good articles during this event are awaiting selection. So I was wondering: maybe not only the DIY nomination but also the DIY selection could be made part of future events? – Editør (talk) 11:27, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
