Instructions for nominators

edit

This page is for those nominations that have already been approved and are waiting to be promoted. If yours has been approved but has not yet been run on the main page, it should either be on this page or will soon be moved here, or already promoted to a Prep area or Queue ahead of an appearance on the main page.

If you wish to create a new nomination, please go to the Template talk:Did you know page; there are instructions there in a section similar to this one on how to nominate an article for DYK.

Frequently asked questions

edit

Backlogged?

edit

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until someone promotes it to a preparation area. To alleviate this problem, if the approved page has more than 120 approved hooks, then sets will change twice per day (every 12 hours) instead of once per day (every 24 hours). When the backlog falls below 60 approved nominations set frequency returns to once a day.

Where is my hook?

edit

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to the nominations page, and it also isn't on this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is either in one of the prep areas, has been promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Instructions for other editors

edit

How to promote an accepted hook

edit
  • See Wikipedia:Did you know/Preparation areas for full instructions.
  • In one window, open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to promote.
  • In another window, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.
  • In the prep set...
    • Paste the hook into the hook area (be sure to not paste in that that)
    • Paste the credit information ({{DYKmake}} and/or {{DYKnom}}) into the credits area.
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted [[Jane Fonda]]", preview, and save
  • Back on DYK nomination page...
    • change {{DYKsubpage to {{subst:DYKsubpage
    • change |passed= to |passed=yes
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted original hook to Prep 3", preview, and save

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue

edit
  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to the nominations page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from the nominations page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

Nominations

edit

Special occasion holding area

edit
Do not nominate articles in this section—nominate all articles in the nominations section on the regular nominations page, under the date on which the article was created or moved to mainspace, or the expansion began, or it was listed as a Good Article; be sure to indicate in the nomination any request for a specially timed appearance on the main page.
Note: Articles intended to be held for special occasion dates should be nominated within seven days of creation, start of expansion, or promotion to Good Article status. The nomination should be made between at least one week prior to the occasion date, to allow time for reviews and promotions through the prep and queue sets, but not more than six weeks in advance. The proposed occasion must be deemed sufficiently special by reviewers. The timeline limitations, including the six week maximum, may be waived by consensus, if a request is made at WT:DYK, but requests are not always successful. Discussion clarifying the hold criteria can be found here: [1]; discussion setting the six week limit can be found here: [2].
April Fools' Day hooks are exempted from the timeline limit; see Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know.
Note for promoters: please be sure to add an "invisible" comment after a hook when you've placed it in prep, noting that it's a special occasion hook and including the date it is supposed to run. This should keep the hook from being moved after promotion, as sometimes happens to hooks when a queue needs a slot filled or a prep set needs to be made more balanced by swapping hooks between preps.

The article itself meets all of the standards of a GA, also qualifying for the DYK size requirement with inline citations wherever necessary. The hook fact is verified, there are no copyright issues, and the QPQ is done so I am approving this.--NØ 14:09, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Masada myth

1969 Masada state funeral
  • Source: Ben-Yehuda, Nachman (1996). Masada Myth: Collective Memory and Mythmaking in Israel. University of Wisconsin Press. ISBN 978-0-299-14833-1, p. xxi: "The bones of twenty-seven humans found on Masada are brought to burial in an official state ceremony."; pages 241-243: "The affair began in October 1963… Immediately, there were newspaper reports to the effect that the remains were probably of the fighters of Masada, and a state burial ceremony was called for. This issue was raised in March 1967, once again, by the same Shlomo Lorentz of the ultra-Orthodox party Agudat Israel. In a blazing speech in the Knesset he demanded that the remains of the skeletons found on Masada should be given a Jewish burial. Mr. Aharon Yadlin, then the minister of culture and education, pointed out that the Jewish identity of the skeletons had not been established and suggested passing the whole issue on to one of the Knesset’s committees. His suggestion was accepted. In fact, the Knesset’s Committee on Culture and Education held a discussion with Yadin on this particular issue in February and March of 1968… On March 12, 1969, Yigael Yadin told Haaretz that he was opposed to a public burial ceremony. He stated that the evidence of the identity of the skeletons was not conclusive enough. He also stated that he believed that the bones were those of the people of Masada but that he lacked definitive proof. In response to this, the spokesman for the Ministry of Religious Affairs stated the next day, also in Haaretz, that “the heroes of Masada came there from Jerusalem and fought the war of the holy city; therefore, it is only natural that their bones would find their final resting place on the Mount of Olives, which was a Jewish cemetery during the days of the Second Temple…. on July 7, 1969, the skeletons that had been uncovered by Yadin’s excavations about five years earlier were brought to burial in a full and formal military ceremony near Masada, at a place called “the hill of the defenders… An impressive array of dignitaries (including Menachem Begin, Yigael Yadin, and Rabbi Shlomo Goren) were present at the burial ceremonies."

I don't think this is that bad to deserve a cross, but you'll definitely want to add a cite to the first paragraph of Yadin's executions at minimum, and that's before interrogating any of the sources.--Launchballer 14:45, 20 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @Launchballer: I have added a cross-ref (it had been referenced at the end of the paragraph, but the paragraph was then split in to two). Re the IP's comments, the citation quote gives all the info about the funeral, and the rest of his book is about the myth. I guess the IP is referring to the latter question. I can bring some more quotes if helpful.
For context, all the sources in the article say essentially the same thing – there is only one known original source for this event, Josephus. The Israeli national myth version differs from that story in a number of significant ways. We can add some nuance to the words "is now known to be a myth" if that is helpful, but the underlying point is beyond doubt.
Onceinawhile (talk) 16:28, 20 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's not a question of "nuance." There is no consensus - as incorrectly and blatantly stated - in RS refs that it "is now known to be a myth." That's simply fake news. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:A91E:FA5D:EAB2:D6B0 (talk) 21:10, 20 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
The wording that it "is now known to be a myth" is simply not supported by the source provided. Perhaps "believed by some to be a myth" or even better "described by one scholar as a myth" could be supported by the citation, but "is now known to be a myth" embellishes the source far beyond any justifiable limit. Alansohn (talk) 01:43, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
What is the “it” you are referring to? Onceinawhile (talk) 06:36, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Alansohn: regarding your comment from a few weeks ago, a new section (Masada_myth#Decline) has now been added to the article as suggested by User:Uppagus. It includes a list of the notable scholars which published on this topic between 1975 and Nachman Ben-Yehuda's book in 1996, as given by Ben-Yehuda.
I have read widely on this topic, including the most recent work by Jodi Magness, and can firmly confirm that there is no scholarly debate as to whether this specific narrative is a myth. Not a single dissenting voice. Onceinawhile (talk) 21:18, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Once -- the statement is simply not supported by any of the refs. It's really that simple. Actually, this brings the entire article into question now that I consider it. Plus, it doesn't seem to warrant a standalone article at all. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:6043:6D87:AEA7:B5C8 (talk) 06:26, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Belatedly noting that the article is at a (particularly bad-tempered) AfD, and this should go on hold until this is kept.--Launchballer 12:06, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Closed as no consensus. This does still sport a {{neutrality}} tag @Onceinawhile:, and I suggest this is actioned.--Launchballer 11:16, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Launchballer. The tag was added without explanation, and the editor who added it was asked to share their concerns on the talk page 10 days ago. I have pinged them again at Talk:Masada_myth#Ensuring_balance, so hopefully we should have clarity soon. Onceinawhile (talk) 17:39, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Launchballer: it looks like there was no objection to removing the tag, as the pinged editors declined to comment. My sense is that enough people have now read the article and sources, and have come to understand the topic and its context. Onceinawhile (talk) 22:53, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
There are POV issues with the article as it currently stands. I wrote a detailed, and yet partial explanation on the article's talk page.

What is the status of this nomination @Onceinawhile:?--Launchballer 07:27, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Launchballer: it would be great to have a new reviewer look at this now. There was an initial aversion to the article by some editors - hence the AfD and subsequent talk page discussions. But these challenges have petered out as concerned editors found the time to read the underlying sourcing in detail, and it seems now to be clear to all that this is a well-covered subject with many decades of academic work underpinning it. The article has benefited from the additional scrutiny, which has made it even stronger. There is more work to do to continue to improve the article, but nothing that should impede us proceeding with the DYK review. Onceinawhile (talk) 16:33, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
You have my sympathy, I had similar snorts when I brought Matty Healy here. (They even nixed my P05 article.) I'm looking at this now for the first time; it's certainly strongly worded but all its claims are backed up, so this should be fine. However, you do need an end-of-sentence citation for the hook.--Launchballer 10:32, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Onceinawhile: Should probably ping.--Launchballer 12:52, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you @Launchballer: I enjoyed reading those articles you linked to. I am genuinely amazed that an article that has had almost 5 million views since you recreated it last year had all those delete votes.
I have done some more work to the article,[4] including adding a further source which works neatly as an end-of-sentence citation for the hook (Sheldon 1998, p. 448: "The belief system he refers to is a myth created around the story of Masada and the Jewish fighters who committed suicide there at the end of the Great Jewish War against Rome in A.D. 73. The story, as Josephus tells it, is not one of heroism. The sicarii on Masada were simply an extremist group of terrorists who had never participated in the Jewish Revolt to begin with and had spent more time killing other Jews than fighting the Romans. Modern twentieth-century Zionists, however, took the original story, eliminated the more embarrassing parts (like the massacre of Jews at Ein Gedi by the sicarii), then used the remaining core to construct a "mythical narrative" of heroism, sacrifice, and national pride for modern Israelis." Every one of the 38 citations in the article contains a version of this statement, but this is a particularly direct one. Onceinawhile (talk) 01:38, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
(It's because it used to look like this and the 1975 Reddit didn't like it very much.) Hook now checks out - let's roll.--Launchballer 07:37, 1 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see that my cutting of excessive quotations in the citations per WP:FOOTQUOTE was reverted by Nishidani who said "The main editor is high experienced in both content and wiki norms". I don't believe this is a very good argument so I won't promote this nomination Onceinawhile, but other promoters may disagree. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 16:08, 2 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@AirshipJungleman29: to be fair to Nishidani, his comment – one week ago – politely invited you to explain your position at the talk page.
To try to explain Nishidani's comment: Our guideline has been consistent for many years: "Brief quotations of copyrighted text may be used to illustrate a point, establish context, or attribute a point of view or idea... Extensive quotation of copyrighted text is prohibited." An ANI thread interpreting this for a WP:FA from a few years ago includes comments such as: "de minimis refers to each individual source; we never use more than a paragraph" and "We do not have extensive quotation from one source--the longest quote is 365 words long." That same ANI discussion identified why quotations in footnotes are beneficial in articles in controversial topic areas like Israeli history – it saves a lot of time because it allows both experienced and inexperienced editors to verify and contextualize our articles' key claims quickly. In this article, the longest footnote quote (citation #5) is 348 words long, shorter than that mentioned above. Onceinawhile (talk) 21:05, 2 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I try to not get more into PIA than I have to, unless I notice something especially egregious. As that ANI thread reached no conclusion at all, I remain confident in my interpretation of WP:FOOTQUOTE. I noted above that other promoters may disagree, but I am unwilling to endorse what I regard as copyright violations on the Main Page. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 22:01, 2 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Understood. For the record, a conclusion was reached – the article (Balfour Declaration) was promoted to WP:FA, and subsequently featured on the main page as WP:TFA. Having surveyed this in the past, I can confirm there are a number of featured articles which contain a significant amount of academic quotations in footnotes.
If consensus here requires them to be removed, I will accept that and remove them. But personally I believe that this is the exact situation that WP:FOOTQUOTE was written for, and our articles, readers and the academics who wrote the underlying sources all benefit from it. Onceinawhile (talk) 04:36, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
No, ANI does not adjudicate content and so no conclusion was reached—see the close. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 01:43, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I mean that a conclusion was reached in the parallel discussion at WP:FA and WP:TFA, as the article was subsequently promoted and then featured in the highest profile part of the main page. This is one of many such examples – in my experience consensus holds across our project more broadly, as 100% of my Good Articles and Featured Articles have detailed quotations in footnotes to aid verification on complex topics or offline sources. See for example: Mandate for Palestine, Palestinian enclaves, Sarcophagus of Eshmunazar II, Cartography of Jerusalem, McMahon–Hussein correspondence. Overall:   Wow! "Ai Uta" is such a classic hit, so it's nice seeing an article for it. Article was nominated for DYK within the first 7 days of creation. It has over 1,500 words in prose. Citations are properly sourced. Earig picked up an unlikely copyright violation of 2.9%. Nominator has less than 5 nominations, so a QPQ is not needed at this time. Some suggestions outside of DYK nomination is to follow MOS:JAPAN#Titles of media, as I see some stylized capitalization (such as Greeeen's name). The ALT looks like it can be worked into something interesting, but the way it's currently worded feels a bit promotional. How about:

ALT0a: ... that, in a 2007 survey done by Oricon, Japanese girls found the song "Ai Uta" by the band Greeeen to be a perfect love song for the autumn?"
ALT2: ... that the record label for the Japanese band Greeeen specifically marketed the song "Ai Uta" to teenagers? lullabying (talk) 09:29, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • Starting review. On initial glance I feel the names section needs clean up. Inclusion of non-English vernacular names is a touchy subject with proponents both ways, so I won't outright say the section should be trimmed down. However, each name should not be an individual paragraph, as that's very close to shouting, especially with the bolding. Combining the single sentences into a paragraph will clean up the section and make it more legible.--Kevmin § 00:01, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

  •   This is a neat fact, I'll jump on this. Article is new and long enough, and QPQ is met. Reuters is a reliable source and the primary proposed hook is obviously uncontroversial. The first hook is definitely the most direct and interesting, though personally I'd word it in a more attention-grabbing way such as "...that there is a Japanese girl group that performs North Korean pop songs?", stating it less as a fact and more as an anecdote. Not a dealbreaker if you prefer it as is though, the hook is perfectly acceptable. My main concern is with the article itself. While it's mostly presentable, seems copyright free, and has adequate sourcing, I'm concerned about the accuracy of its framing of the topic. It calls them a girl group and states they do musical performances of Korean pop. However, most sources (both utilized and other general google results) appear to call them a fan club, and I can only find any reference to them doing dance, not singing. The Reuters sources cited for them performing music has a lot of photos where they appear to be dancing without any apparent microphones, and again calls them a fan club who are dancing. This also seems more consistent with their undefined scope of membership. If they are not in fact a musical act, this is a major flaw in the article and the hook, which directly touches on them as a pop act. Do you have any sources that confirm they do any singing and are considered to be a girl group? LittleLazyLass (Talk | Contributions) 05:16, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Kinship source: "Kublu started life as an old man because she is her own great grandfather’. She explains: I am my paniq’s atatukulu. My paniq’s my grandmother . . . My grandmother is my paniq, which is daughter. I’m her atatukulu because I’m named after her stepfather. Her biological father was lost out at sea when she was a baby . . . The only father she knew was Kublu and so to her . . . he was her father. My younger daughter calls me inni (son), and I in turn, call her atatta (father). But first of all, I was always going to be Kublu because my atiq died before I was born . . . . My mother’s midwife . . . the first person who held me . . . told my mother that she wanted her son (Kublu) to live with her . . . my mother by name (told) my mother by birth that she wanted . . . to have her son living with her. So that’s how I became Kublu. (Alia 2005: 252) That tangled constellation of identities is virtually impossible for an outsider to comprehend." Alia, Valerie; Bull, Simone (2005). • Comment: This is a complicated one, and a meaty article at that. I thank any reviewer well for their time and patience. This DYK is tied in with the concept of atiq or atiapik, this article by the Inuit Art Foundation explains the concept quite well.

To explain, as in the article, Inuit namesakes traditionally become the person they are named after. Kublu is named after her grandmother's stepfather and thus became the elder Kublu. Her daughter is named after her father, and thus Kublu's daughter is her father.

  • How does the source verify either of the hooks? The "lack of good men" part checks out, but the "their"/"there" etc. part is just referencing the lyrics. This is drawing a conclusion that the article doesn't state. Songs are often works of fiction, so I'm not comfortable with making these statements without a proper source. What's in the hook comes off as somewhere between synthesis and original research. I honestly have no idea what ALT1 means and its certainly not referenced in the article. The article only has the line "moanin' and bitchin'" and doesn't infer that Carpenter serves it in the kitchen: the lyrics do.
  • I dislike the links. It's unclear to most readers except a few pop-culture stans that "a lack of good men" and "moanin' and bitchin'" will link to a Carpenter song. (MOS:EASTEREGG)
  • Furthermore, I have doubts about the reliability of Capital. More than anything, it seems like a radio station, not a publication. The article comes off as somewhat sensationalist and low-quality. I can't find much on the author's credibility. Can you make a case for this source?

  • Done. The problem was that I started writing "on the fly", and by logic, if the story is completed (the comic itself is) he must have been kidnapped after finishing it. And yet, it happened a year earlier. I then corrected the article when I realized that and sought sources with more detail, but I forgot to update the lead. As for the proposed ALT1, that doesn't seem like better wording to me. "Murdered" (a public figure by a national government) would suggest something more visible and/or public, like a firing squad execution, and just "disappeared" sounds like a magic trick. A hook should be understood on its own, without any other context at all. "enforced disappearance" is more precise and does not leave space for misunderstandings. • Hook review: I generally like the hook but I think it needs some further improvement:
    • Which is the source you think best states the fact that just a few memoirs of Soviet POW in German captivity exist?
    • Additionally two tweaks are necessary in my opinion: I think we cannot state that he "published" his memoir because it was published posthumously. Also, I did not find a source that sees this memoir as dealing with the deaths of 3 million POW.
    • So maybe you can think of a rephrasing of the hook that only claims that he wrote the memoir and that it is one of the few memoirs of a Soviet POW in German captivity?
    • If the issues concerning the hook are addressed I will gladly approve this nomination. Thank you for creating valuable free knowledge! WatkynBassett (talk) 18:57, 11 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Thanks for reviewing. If you need another source for it, Gerlach says, "Unfortunately, few POW accounts were ever published". The book explicitly covers "das Sterben der Kameraden", the three million figure is given in the hook as it contrasts the scale of the atrocity to the lack of sources and memoirs about it. (t · c) buidhe 02:01, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
    • I must apologize for coming back to this so late; my life currently is a bit disorderly. I appreciate the cite; I think this first issue is fixed now. Nevertheless, I am still not convinced that we can say in wikivoice that the work is about the deaths of 3 million Soviet prisoners of war in German captivity - because this is not contained in any source. Would it therefore not be better to rephrase your hook in a way that highlights that Dawletschin wrote one of the only memoirs of the nearly six million Soviet prisoners of war, of which more than 3 million died? Sorry for the quibbling. WatkynBassett (talk) 05:42, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Article was created on time and is free from close paraphrasing. The hook is cited inline in the article, meets DYKINT, and is verified in the source. The statement about structures being wrapped in protective foil is not stated by text in the source, but pictures are shown which do show foil, so that works for me. Several statements cited to the Wenatchee World article are not in the current version of the article, such as the mention of Team 13. In addition, the article says that the fire may have "originated from a human-caused structure fire", but The Seattle Times only mentioned that the fire was "human-caused" with no mention of structures; the sentence also uses the Wenatchee World as a source and that too does not mention a "structure". A QPQ has also yet to be provided.
I also have to note that the Wildfire.gov link gives me a 403 Forbidden error, but I'm not sure if it's down or if it's inaccessible outside the US. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 07:33, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Syrian literature

  • Comments: @Munfarid1: I'm reviewing this. But I think ALT1 should be avoided, as it's about a particular work, not the Syrian literature as a whole. BorgQueen (talk) 09:45, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Comments: ALT0 isn't accurate. In the source article, Samar Haddad says (translated into English): There's a trend towards making PDFs of books available as free downloads on websites. We publishers are directly affected because it's a lost opportunity to sell a book, but there's not much we can do about it. I once chatted with a young man who has a Facebook page, with a funny name in Arabic [Abu Abdo the Mule], that distributes free PDFs of books. (...) I know people who have stopped reading free copies after we've explained to them that they're harming us and the authors too. But such understanding people are rare. The thing that hurts the most about the subject is that people easily save money to buy stupid things, but not books. She says nothing about the low number of books getting published because of that. BorgQueen (talk) 19:07, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Comments: I've reworded ALT1. The Al Jazeera news article supports the war and torture part; while it mentions the threat of imprisonment the poets are facing, it doesn't explicitly say imprisonment is a source of inspiration. In addition, the source talks about contemporary Syrian poetry, which is only one aspect of the national literature, so I added "partly". BorgQueen (talk) 19:27, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Comments: I've struck ALT2 as there's nothing unusual about many women contributing to literature. Perhaps you could argue that Syria is an extremely male-dominated society and that makes it unusual and interesting, but our readers won't get that cultural context from the hook. BorgQueen (talk) 20:08, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
  • Comments: I've reworded ALT3 as well. The rationale behind Mohja Kahf's declaration of Syrian literature not existing is rather complicated actually, involving several linguistic, historical and geopolitical factors. I don't think what is written in the 2013 news article can be used to prove that Mohja Kahf completely revoked the previous statement. BorgQueen (talk) 20:26, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Overall:   Expanded from redirect from 14 to 16 August and sized at 2003 B. Prefer ALT2 for hookiness. Note that Favre1fan93 is the only nom with >=5 DYKs, so assuming DYK rules count hook proposers as nominators the review is for him. While ALT0 ref doesn't say Sam Savage, ref 4 has it covered. @Favre1fan93 and Trailblazer101: there is only one problem needed to fix: there is very close paraphrasing with "holding page with some comic book related press releases and sales links on it", including in ALT2, but replacing it with "holding page containing sales links and press releases" should be fine with respect to WP:LIMITED. Another thought I had was adding the CBS or Paramount ownership to ALT2 given how important the companies are globally (especially the latter), but consider this optional. ミラP@Miraclepine 16:36, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Miraclepine: I've adjusted the close paraphrasing here (I still retained at the end that they were comic book-related but let me know if that's still too much) and adjusted it in ALT2 as well. We could add in at the very end of ALT2 , formerly for CBS and Paramount if you think that would help. That would bring the hook character count up to 183. Let me know if you'd prefer that and if there's anything else. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 16:45, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Favre1fan93: I've had some time thinking about this, and on second thought, it's already hooky without having to be a little long, especially when combining the contrast between the narrower field the site's name suggests (comic books) and the broader field the site actually covers (general entertainment) with another large contrast (originally PRs and promo links, now news content), so ALT2 without the ending it is.   ALT0-2, prefer ALT2 ミラP@Miraclepine 16:56, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

  •   The article is new enough and long enough at the time of the nomination. Earwig is giving me the "Too Many Requests" error right now so I am unable to check for close paraphrasing. A QPQ has been done. Almost all the sources are offline so I will assume good faith for the sourcing. The main issue right now is the hook: it's only mentioned in the lede without a citation. The rest of the article does not appear to directly support the "routinely imprisoned" statement, only that Witnesses have been regularly arrested and some have been jailed. My suggestion would be a rephrasing of the hook to make it closer to the article text. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:04, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Just one last minor issue before I approve this: the phrase "although they do not receive permanent criminal records." is very close to the BBC source, so if it's possible to rephrase it, that would be appreciated. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 07:40, 31 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Building is complicated. Only part of the structure made it to the UK. The inner stonework did not and while it is freestanding it would have originally been inside a larger temple. You've also got the argument that Cleopatra's Needle, London is a building. Mostly though it was an issue of not being able to find a way to phrase it that didn't run into copyright issues.©Geni (talk) 00:46, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

  •   Hi Cambalachero! Overall, I think the article is well-written. Earwig showed no copyright violations, and the article was moved to mainspace on 16 August, so it is new enough. However, I have some concerns about the plot section. Although there are no specific standard for its length and the current plot summary is sourced, I think it is a bit too lengthy, as it is longer than the lead, editorial history, and reception sections combined. Trimming it down to around 400 to 700 words would be more suitable for the article, so it does not overly focus on in-universe content. —Prince of EreborThe Book of Mazarbul 13:01, 22 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

The Book of Virtues

This season on Extreme Makeover: Wikipedia Edition: A 1993 bestselling sensation that made millions for its compiler and led to several follow-ups, including a PBS animated series--and (par for the course with such ventures) a couple of competitors. (Ignoring his personal/career controversies and the age of the tales he collected.) Despite its status, its WP article never got the attention worthy of its legacy (in the 16! years since I last chanced upon editing it), hardly moving past the few paragraphs it was allocated back then. Think of the parable of the Good Samaritan,[1] and you'll realise my role in the proceedings this month. (Can't quite recall how I suddenly reapproached it days ago, though.) Optimised reconstruction of link chain on Android Chrome that brought me back there, thanks to a little perusal of TV Tropes on August 15 (and considering the browser's limitations, it was a chore getting to that date): Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child → "The Fisherman and His Wife" → "The Frog Prince" → Adventures from the Book of Virtues.
I've heard talk that stubs are considered the ugly ducklings[1] of this project. Well, sir, I mustered up enough courage--and sacrificed enough time--to turn this specimen into a swan nineteen-fold[2] by the time of this nomination (according to WP:Prosesize). (Cf. my efforts on Apparition (company) back during last year's Memorial season.)
As a side note, work on this DYK candidate coincided with the U.S. political conventions.
Even though this won't lead to a coveted Four Award, I'm in the running for the other three fragments. Could this lead to my first FA star in the next three or so months? Until then, wish me luck, and stay tuned for my next DYK nomination (before this month's over).

Overall:   The main hook is approved, and the check reflects this – the sources seem to indicate it may have been for political reasons (which would make the hook a bit more interesting IMO, but it's fine as is). I'd propose removing the word "the" for ALT1 before "project markets" to make it grammatically correct for ALT1 – make that change, and it's approved as well. Great work on this! Nomader (talk) 18:16, 22 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nomader, thanks for reviewing and providing feedback! I have removed the extra "the" in the alternate hook. I had considered mentioning the political reasons for To quitting filming in the initial draft of the article, but it seemed a bit digressive from the focus on the film's production, so I did not include it. I am open to adding it in both the article and hook if you think that would make things better. —Prince of EreborThe Book of Mazarbul 12:41, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Prince of Erebor: I think that a brief mention in a sentence wouldn't be too off-topic and the context is important – but I think it could just be a brief mention instead of a full paragraph or something. That said, the current hooks are both just fine as is as well and my original approval is still good to go here. Nomader (talk) 02:57, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Then I will retain the current hook. Thanks for taking the time to review the article! —Prince of EreborThe Book of Mazarbul 13:09, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unusual life, on fine sources, no copyvio obvious. This ref has a day of birth. I made some small changes, please check. I wonder why you don't give us readers an infobox, - I first thought Margrit Waltz was the name of the pictured airplane ;) - I am not happy with the hook, because I believe that it's only quirky if we get to know that her #1 love will always be flying, not some other man. I am also not sure if, with such an unusual record of 900 trans-Atlantic flights, we should go for some little quirkiness instead of that unusual achievement. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:34, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the review and for finding the German-language source! I've added the date of birth and an infobox. How about:

  • ALT1: ... that Margrit Waltz holds the record for the most trans-Atlantic flights?
  • ALT2: ... that Margrit Waltz has ferried almost 1000 planes across the Atlantic?

PS, I've stuck my original; you're right, it's a silly thing to focus on. Of the two above, I think ALT2 is the better one. RoySmith (talk) 14:14, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, I like both, and could also imagine a combination. - On the Main page right now Jerzy Artysz, and all the hook says is that he was honoured by a music university on his 70th birthday. Nothing about him as an unusual person. I don't recall any other baritone who performed so many title roles, - they usually go to the high voices. Sad. I had no time nor energy to fight it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:42, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Article is new enough, long enough, and within policy. However, I don't think this hook works for two reasons. One, the fun of this hook is backwards. The punchline of this hook is when you get to the article and realize it is about a painting and not actual beachfront property. That's witty, but the wit isn't in what one sees on the main page. On its face, the buying of property along a beach isn't interesting, and I don't think the hook will draw in many readers so that they get the wit of the hook which requires actually going to the page. Two, the hook is factually inaccurate. Even if a painting depicts beachside property, the purchaser of a painting knows they aren't buying land, they are buying a painting. I get the humor/wit behind the hook, and if this were an April Fools hook proposal it would be appropriate. In short: we need a new hook that is hooky at first glance and verifiable.4meter4 (talk) 22:33, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

General: Article is new enough and long enough

Policy compliance:

  • Adequate sourcing:
  • Neutral:
  • Free of copyright violations, plagiarism, and close paraphrasing:   - There’s a lot of close paraphrasing, and there are some examples and suggestions:
  • Ref 2: “During the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, Pantouw was active in the Syukai Gi In organization in Makassar. Following the end of Japanese rule and the proclamation of Indonesian independence, the organization changed its name to Source of the People's Blood (Sumber Darah Rakyat, Sudara).”
  • Article: “During the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies, Pantouw was active in the Syukai Gi In organization in Makassar. Following the end of Japanese rule and the proclamation of Indonesian independence, the organization changed its name to Source of the People's Blood (Sumber Darah Rakyat, Sudara)”
  • Suggestion: “Pantouw later joined another organization in Makassar, Syukai Gi In, which later became Sudara (Sumburan Darah Rakyat, lit. "Source of the People's Blood") after the end of the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies.”
  • Ref 3: “Together with Ratulangi, Najamuddin Daeng Malewa and other Republicans, he had been active in various organizations in Sulawesi such as Source of the People’s Blood (Sumber Darah Rakyat, Sudara) and the Party of Popular Sovereignty (Partai Kedaulatan Rakyat, pkr). But eventually he came to the conclusion that nothing could be achieved through such organizations. He therefore joined the NIT together with Malewa, cooperated with the Dutch, and became minister of information in the first cabinet of the NIT. His main concern was to tackle the many social problems confronting the Indonesian people due to the Japanese colonial rule and the Allied bombings. Pantouw was fully aware that the NIT was widely regarded as a Dutch puppet. But he was determined to turn it into a tool to push the Dutch into ending their colonialism. Pantouw argued that it was impossible for the Republic of Indonesia – which had no power, no army and no weapons in this part of Indonesia – to fight the Dutch effectively.
  • Article: “Pantouw, together with other nationalists including Sam Ratulangi and Nadjamuddin Daeng Malewa, were active in Sudara as well as the Party of Popular Sovereignty (Partai Kedaulatan Rakyat, PKR). However, he came to the conclusion that nothing could be achieved through such organizations. He, together with Malewa, therefore chose to cooperate with the Dutch. Both Pantouw and Malewa joined the first cabinet of the Dutch-backed State of East Indonesia (Negara Indonesia Timur, NIT). The latter became prime minister, while the former became minister of information. Pantouw's main concern was to tackle the many social problems confronting the Indonesian people. He was aware that the NIT was seen by many simply as a Dutch puppet state. But he was determined to turn the state into a tool to push the Dutch into ending colonialism. Pantouw argued that it was impossible for the newly proclaimed Republic of Indonesia — which had no power, no army, and no weapons in this part of the country — to fight the Dutch effectively, thus joining the NIT was a necessary step given the political situation.”
  • Suggestion: “Despite being active in organizations like Sudara and the People's Sovereignty Party, he decided to collaborate with the Dutch government after realizing an inability to achieve much with the former, and he joined the first cabinet of the Dutch-backed State of East Indonesia (NIT) as minister of information, under the leadership of prime minister Nadjamuddin Daeng Malewa, also a fellow nationalist. Despite being aware of the NIT’s reputation as a puppet state, he was determined to not only address Indonesian people's social concerns, but also to pressure the Dutch into decolonization, arguing that "it was impossible for the newly proclaimed Republic of Indonesia — which had no power, no army, and no weapons in this part of the country — to fight the Dutch effectively".”
  • More suggestions: Remove “As a member of Jong Minahasa“ as redundant and replace with “and”, and replace “participated” with “stood” or “ran”.

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited:
  • Interesting:   - Clarify that the SEI is a Dutch puppet state, without which this hook wouldn’t be interesting enough, and we got ourselves a deal.
QPQ: None required.

Overall:   2942 B and nom one day after creation. Ref 2 has “/wiki/” in the URL, but it’s more of a technical aspect since the Encyclopedia of Indonesian History has an editorial staff. Fix the issues and you’re good to go. ミラP@Miraclepine 01:47, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Kaythehistorian: Almost everything is good, except:
  • Change "during the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies. The organization changed its name" to -> "before it changed its name"; redundant since the next sentence is already clear he remained in Sudara around the time he collaborated with a post-war puppet regime; also this helps fix a close-paraphrasing issue, and it helps if you look at WP:POSA.
  • Change "was the best way" to "was essential"; the former implies there were other options even though the source doesn't make such seem as obvious as the latter.
  • Fix the "210–1" to "211–2"; I checked the source and I assume it's probably a mistake, just like "re-establish" (a minor grammar issue I fixed myself).
Fix these and only these and I'll approve ALT0a. ミラP@Miraclepine 04:09, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • Overall great article, ALT2 is my favorite hook, then ALT1, ALT0, ALT3, ALT4. All check out regarding sourcing and are  . The image doesn't really work at the low resolution IMO, I think one of the aviary shots would be better. Some assorted comments since I read the whole article, but are minor and don't block the DYK approval:
    • The Animals section starts with "The zoo is home to as many as 112 species as of 2013" (and in the infobox); is there really no updated figure 10 years later?
    • "The administration of mayor Ed Koch and the New York Zoological Society signed a fifty-year agreement" - did the administration really sign the agreement and not the mayor himself? The NYT source says the mayor signed it.
    • Many animals are not wikilinked on first reference in the Description section, but later are during the Animals section - was there a reason for that?
    • I'm low-key skeptical that the non-free logo in the infobox adds anything, it basically just says the zoo's name. Legoktm (talk) 06:55, 2 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
      • Thanks for the review. I added some links and changed the text about the agreement to reflect the source. The logo is outdated, so I removed it. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a more recent figure for the number of species (at least, not one that mentions a date). Epicgenius (talk) 14:35, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Interesting biography about a subject about whom little is known, on fine sources, offline sources accepted AGF. Of the hooks, I like ALT1, because it relates to the image. The image caption can then be shortened, and pictured might come after blindness, because the whole scene is pictured. The image is licensed and illustrates the scene well, but is not ideal in that small size. - I am not sure about Psalms vs. psalms, because afaik it's Psalm 84 when a particular one is meant but otherwise it seems a general term like hymns. This goes also for the article. The sentence with "some debate" has to many some for my taste. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:26, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gerda Arendt: Thanks for the quick review and kind words. I agree that if the image is used, ALT1 makes the most sense; I've changed the caption to simply the English translation of the painting's title and moved "(pictured)" in the hook. I think "Psalm" should be capitalized because it was my understanding that he played the Psalms on the harp, not just Christian hymns, because that was sort of a bardic/skálic tradition to tell stories that way, but it's possible I'm misinterpreting. Sentence with "some" has been fixed; thanks for pointing it out. ThaesOfereode (talk) 16:23, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for explaining. I think I wasn't clear about Psalms. I'd write "He sang psalms." the same way as I'd write "He sang hymns." --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:29, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Overall:   I prefer ALT1; not sure the first hook is interesting enough. Important question - I'm not sure if the expansion of the radio station article suffices, as it appears to incorporate through merger what was in another article. A second set of eyes on that issue, or explanation by the nom, would be helpful. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:587E:4EDE:255:173E (talk) 22:16, 1 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

    • ALT1: ... that Wigwam (pictured) only formed to play a single concert, but have been performing together for seven years? •   The article was long enough and new enough at the time of the nomination. I did not find any close paraphrasing, and the article is properly sourced. I am assuming good faith for the sources as they are in Welsh, although for DYK purposes the provided translations above should be fine. A QPQ has been done. I'm approving only the original hook as it's shorter, snappier, and probably more intriguing. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 09:56, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Narutolovehinata5: Thank you for the review! But I'm not sure why you've specifically approved only one hook when there's nothing actually wrong with the other one - surely it's up to the prep builders to choose which hook is more interesting. (I say this because I think ALT1 is a little more interesting personally, and is in a pretty common hook style.) Suntooooth, it/he (talk/contribs) 15:30, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
While I thought ALT1 was also a surprising and interesting hook, I thought the fact about them being formed four days before the gig, as opposed to simply being intended to be a one-time thing, was more unusual and eye-catching. In addition, it's also a shorter hook and arguably punchier. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 23:56, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Overall:   Overall, this is a really good DYK! I personally like ALT0, as it gives a bit more info on who it passed to become #1. Earwig showed only a ~4% copyvio likeliness, which falls far into the "okay" category. The article is also new enough (I noticed that you moved the article into mainspace on September 3, so you're fine there) and long enough. :) Sir MemeGod :D (talk - contribs - created articles) 22:29, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

    •   Article is new enough, long enough, well-sourced (FYI there are two harv errors, Ref 7 and 19 respectively), neutral, copyvio-free, and presentable. Hook is cited to a reliable source and is interesting. I'd go with Alt0. Images are properly licensed. QPQ done. Great job! Vacant0 (talkcontribs) 11:10, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Overall:   Overall, I think this is pretty good! Although I feel like the hook could be a teensy bit more interesting, I'll let that pass because it is still something that sounds cool. The source is a-okay (and mentions it, the most important part), as well as date of the GA promotion and length of the article itself. No image, so no issues there, sources in the article itself are good, neutrality checks off, and while Earwig did find a ~27% copyvio likeliness, that's still pretty low. QPQ is done, so everything checks off! (Good luck on that Francis Bacon source!) Sir MemeGod :D (talk - contribs - created articles) 18:52, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
